View Full Version : The Comic Translation Project
The Project is currently on hold. More info here (http://forums.explosm.net/showthread.php?t=10446). Please do not send any applications. Check back here or the front page for updates.
We're trying to undertake a huge project behind the scenes at Explosm: translating every single comic into several languages. The first idea was to hire professionals, but since we really don't have money for that and since C&H has always been a personal project, we've decided to instead include translators on our team.
We need translators. And by translators, I mean anyone who can fluently speak two languages (one of them being English) and has a sense of humor. We don't care what your age is or if you have any past experience.
Anyone who helps out will get a free t-shirt, as well as another piece of merchandise which I'm not allowed to announce yet. Also your name will be on each comic that you translate.

So that people who don't speak English can enjoy our comics. I thought the reason was pretty obvious.

I can use an online translator pretty well. I double check to see if it means what I really want to mean :frown:
Don't use online translators unless you want other countries to think you're 12.

I could translate to german. But the problem is, that english jokes are not that funny anymore if you translate them.
Sure i'd be glad if i could help you with the translations, but there are some comics (like the one with the lethal injection) which can't be translated.
I'm from Germany and I'd do pretty much anything for a free t-shirt

that's a problem with all translations, but if the translation continues to have the original's line, that's ok..
another problem with translations is that the same language changes from country to country, and that affect a lot the humour's side.

Exactly, Mexican Spanish and Spain Spainsh are same with the basic, but the slang is alot diffrent. Meaning that we are gonna have to have some body that knows slang from mexico, and slang from spain. We are gonna need alot of diffrent translators.

Brazilian portuguese is too much different than Potugal..
some gramatic is different, the meaning of something is different, etc... but the africans countries that speak portuguese i think arent a problem.. a project is running to try to join all the portuguese speakers countries by changing some gramatic, etc (but portugal didnt accepted, and the majority of the brazilians didnt like the idea, i for example, took 15 years to learn the right way to write, and it will be changed ¬¬ so i dont know if it will be succesfull)

You just need to read through the comic several times before you start translating it and really focusing on the funny thing about it and then making it all fit together without changing the lines to much.
It will be a lot of work, but I bet that it will pay off at the end.

I could do it for Brazilian Portuguese, but it's really pretty similar to the one from Portugal. A bunch of the jokes either don't work or plain suck in Portuguese, though.
I'd offer to translate into Lithuanian, but I don't think you get too much traffic from there, and I'm not sure how well it'd go, anyhow.

[translation: i could be useful.]
the problem with translating humor is that in a lot of cultures even if you know how to translate ideas colloquially, the humor just doesn't translate. a lot of your stuff seems like it would cross the barriers pretty well, but a lot of it could also be hit-or-miss.

A better translation for you would be that you can translate for Spain, but not any of the Spanish-speaking American countries. Artists, you need to choose people from a variety of places. There is a different kind of Spanish spoken from country to country, with the most perfect example being "fuck": joder, chingao, demonios, maldición, jodido, rayos, mal rayo me parta, etc.

Hay guys!
Yeah, I registeres for this answer alone. I'm bored at work so whatever.
Just wanted to note that this guy on page 1 is absolutely correct, if you translate these to german, you will kill most of it. There is no f*cking way you can do this AND keep the funny alive.
It will work with some but most won't be funny anymore, some will feel like done by a 12 year old (some already do but in a good way.)
I'm from germany and thought about doing this, because I have read like well all of these comics lol Also, free tshirt. But checking some random comics made me realize this won't work.
tl;dr
So if you don't happen to find a total comedy genius maybe consider to translate not all of them...

But what's a comic-with-audio without being able to see the pictures?
Describing the pictures would kill the funny.
Oh yes, "In this comic, you see a monkey looking at a dead cat in shock. The monkey is saying 'Aw crap.' and at the bottom it says -Curiosity killed the cat.-"
Ha. Ha. Funny.

Hi there!
According to duckgalrox, there's a lot of different ways to speak spanish.
The most common is the use of the "tu" voice, however, there's another one which is a lot funnier: the "vos" voice, or castilian of Río de la Plata.
This "language" is used by Argentina and Uruguay only and it's similar to the formal way of the old spanish.
Example: "You will now be put to death by lethal injection"
1 - (Spanish) Ahora tú serás ultimado por medio de injección letal.
2 - (Castilian) Ahora vos vas a ser ultimado por medio de injección letal.
3 - (Old formal spanish) Ahora vos seréis ultimado por medio de la injección letal.
That's all.

Figured I'd throw down my hat; I'm fluent in Dutch (and English, durrr). I also have some working knowledge of French and German so I might be of assistance in that area.
Who knows if you still need me, but just send me a mail if you're interested.
I'm Swedish and totally gay, maybe not homosexual but my friends call me gay. So seeing I'm not American or straight (in their sense) you should pick me because yeah, you should totally expand your ethnic multitude. I mean, as a representative organization for America, it is needed and valued. So yeah, pick me and I'll suck but It'll look good on paper, hiring a foreign homosexual!
Plus I freaking rock in both languages. One time I entered in a Spelling Bee contest with my 5 year old sister and won, both in Swedish and English. I think that defines my greatness and capacity. And yes, chicken have large talons.

That's all.
Bye
But there's an invention called "español neutral" that's used with movie subtitles, that tries to blend all the differences between latin american countries, not using any specific words, so the text looks comfortable for any latin american country.
Already sent you my email

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this before (I'm too lazy to read the whole thread), but online manga (Japanese comic) scanlators are professionals at what they do...even if they're amateurs who work for nothing. Try mangahelpers.com, that usually the source for everything...they've got a whole team of translators turning japanese comics into english, german, spanish, french, etc...they've got all the biggest languages covered.

However, the question is, how many of the people there have read all of the comics?
The reason Rob asked it on here is because...Well, everyone here reads them.
At least, I think so.:O

We're trying to undertake a huge project behind the scenes at Explosm: translating every single comic into several languages. The first idea was to hire professionals, but since we really don't have money for that and since C&H has always been a personal project, we've decided to instead include translators on our team.
We need translators. And by translators, I mean anyone who can fluently speak two languages (one of them being English) and has a sense of humor. We don't care what your age is or if you have any past experience.
If you meet those two requirements and you want to be part of the C&H crew, send us an email about yourself using the contact form (http://www.explosm.net/contact/).
Anyone who helps out will get a free t-shirt, as well as another piece of merchandise which I'm not allowed to announce yet. Also your name will be on each comic that you translate.
Oi mate!
I probably could help with some danish translation since im from Denmark. but then again, I would have the same problem as the user called Tetris - it will not be just as funny after I've translated it, well, maybe sometimes, but still..

Ok, but I'm talking about doing a "standard" tranlsation, without adding any word that is used only on certain countries.
I didn't know that "mosqueado" isn't used out of spain.
But I've seen many films subtitled in mexican and that is not "standard" spanish.
If they pick me I will try to do the translation as standard as possible.
I may have a thing or two to say... in spanish, that is.
*takes off pants*
let's do this.

I suggest you that for spanish, you should make a team of not only one member. Im spanish speaker and i tell you, you need 1 from Spain, 1 from Mexico and 1 from Argentina or a country near Argentina. That way the three of them can translate to a standar spanish the three of them can understand and see if the three of them can catch the jokes.
Also you need native speakers, not only for spanish, for all languages, if you hire americans (for example) that just when to live to another countries and learned the language of that country, that wont do AT ALL. You need the original thing, think cuz you have to take into consideration that you will also need the certain humor from the certain countries. If you are just bringin americans with american humor then people from another countries may not get the jokes.

NO!!! Please dont't translate your comics! I'm from Germany and love to read and understand all of your jokes! And its impossible to translate all of the comics especially those that contain puns or adages. I think every sentence in the comics has its special style depending on the author who created it! In a translation nothing of this "flavour" will remain! Don't give anybody a chance to criticise bad translations. Its perfect as it is, therse no need for translations!

Natives? I'm Mexican-American. I can speak both languages just fine. I think the benefit of having an American who's also fluent in other languages is that it improves the chances of something NOT gettting lost in translation.

Yeah, the problem is that there are some comics that play on English words, such as the "hurray-whoreray" comic. If there are no other options for French, which is highly unlikely, I SUPPOSE I could help.
or "nar-whals." But every comic ain't supposed to work in different languages. Most probably will.
Looks like we have plenty of Mexican translators. At least their won't be any problems translating into Spanish.
