I think any FPS fan knows about this franchise, I was addicted to this when I was younger. Then they released UT2003 on the Unreal Engine 2.0 and changed the graphics significantly and many players found the new gameplay straying too far from it's origins, myself included. Granted UT2003, UT2004 is alot of fun, it just seems like everybody is flying everywhere with jumps allowing too much distance, and bullets and rockets barely hurting players taking ages for you to actually kill someone even if you hit them.
So, let's break it down into catagories...
Gameplay: UT3 is going back to it's origins as said in an interview where the gameplay will be like it was in UT, and believe me, they did itwell and it ROCKS! Weapons do alot of damage like they should. The starting weapon is actually USEFUL to kill someone whereas you pretty much had to run intil you found a decent weapon in UT2003/4. Jumping/Dodging will still help you avoid rockets and what not, but not to a degree where you're flying everywhere doing the impossible. I just cannot get over the feel and the moment of the game, I was so happy this has deffinately changed my mind on the first November game I'm going to get (well, tied with Crysis really :P)
Graphics: The Beta Demo is outdated of course, and they obviously don't allow high settings otherwise the demo would be 2gb+ in size, so I really can't comment on that, but what I've seen on medium settings on my shitty Shader 2.0(not C) card is stunning. The lighting blooms and atmostphere is just breathetaking and I cannot wait to get my new PC plus the retail version to see it in action!
Multiplayer: I haven't gotten the chance to play this yet due to my PC sucking but i'll try to tonight (girlfriend onto me atm for typing this) and update this section.
Game Modes: Unlike all the other UT verisons out there, with UT3 they're actually going to release a campaign mode instead of making a ladder system. This is unlike they did in the past, they released "Unreal X" as a different game, where "X" is the version (IE: 2, MX, etc). They are also adding Vehicle CTF to all the other gametypes they already have, which is all I can really comment on at the moment because the other gametypes are not in the Demo, other than DM, TDM, CTF, VCTF. They will be onlslaught which was introduced in the previous version, which I'm excited for as it's a great gametype to play.
Weapons: They have a lot of the fun weapons returning, but they work differently, or improved. Some models have dramatically changed as well as the firing modes, but I think it was all for the better.
Conclusion: If you enjoyed UT in the past, this is deffinately worth picking up! If you've never played the UT series in the past, what are you waiting for? Now is the perfect time to get into the game, this is a great FPS as far as I can tell and I cannot wait to pick up and own it up :D
