In an effort to homogenize the Whorehouse a bit, Allen and I have decided to start something new. Instead of a person posting, “I saw ___, it was funny etc.” we thought it might be more interesting if the person gave a review of the experience.

What is a Review? A review is your opinion of what you saw or played. They can cover just about anything including, but not limited to: Music (concerts, CD’s, Videos), Movies (rental, theatre, internet), Games (video or board), or Books in any genre.

Until we get a Thread Tag for reviews, please make the thread title: Review: title of what you saw. The following format is a guide for how we would like reviews to be posted.

The Body of the post should look something like this.

Title: Name of what it is you are reviewing
Genre:
Format: Movie, CD, Game, Book
Rating: We have decided to rate on a scale of 5 :heya:’s
Date: This can be when you saw, heard, or when you read/finished it. It can also be the date of the original release.
Review: In the review section you simply give your opinion. Be detailed in your review, explain highlights or problems. You can even describe the experience ie going to the theatre, why you chose the game, CD, or movie etc.

Try to be balanced in your review. Even if you liked something, I am sure there could have been improvements made. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LIKE WHAT YOU ARE REVIEWING! If you thought something was bad, say so, but please be fair and explain why you did not like or were disappointed with whatever it is you are reviewing.

Lastly, please be clear and concise by using correct punctuation and grammar. Make paragraphs and not one humungous wall of text. For those replying please contribute and do not simply post “I agree” or “I think it sucks.” Reviews do not have to be extremely long or in depth, just put some actual effort into what you post.

If these simple guidelines are followed I think reviews can be a great addition to the media forum.

Also, do not post a review of something that already has a review thread. Simply post your review in the pre-existing thread. I think this goes without saying, but this is the internet, and people are dumb. Do not make a different thread because you have opposing views about the movie/book/game/album. Also, every post within a thread doesn't have to be a review.

Well the funhouse was never a big review place.
People just made threads to discuss something and posted their opinions, never meant to be reviews.
But I guess its going to be interesting have opinions from people i know(on the internet) as opposed to some random site.

People can still give their opinions about things including the reviews. We are just looking for a little more structure in the way it is presented. Threads about upcoming releases and things like that are still welcome. Reviews are only for people who have actually seen, heard, or played something and would like to discuss it.

The whole part where you have to start the post off with a list of details is just damn silly. Most people would mention stuff like that in the first paragraph just by accident; like "YO DAWGS I SAW [movie] YESTERDAY ITS A KICKASS ACTION MOVIE WHAT STARS BURCE WILUS". That's all the necessary details I just used. There's no need to make some official list of them. If someone wants to be a professional about it: Go for it. If not, I'll read it anyway. Don't force people into writing like a nerd or you'll just get less reviews.

Alright Smelly let me break it down for you. The rating system is just like stars, but instead we are using the :heya: smiley. As in i'd rate your review of the review guideline :heya: :heya: (that's 2 heyas).

The Review Guideline is just that, a guideline. I am sure people will omit and/or add things to their reviews to individualize them, and that is not frowned upon. I have just gotten really tired of some of the "reviews" people have posted. Instead of someone posting, "I saw X movie it was awesome imo." The review system/guidelines encourages the individual to actually put some thought and effort into what they are posting and why said movie is "awesome."

Formalizing things more and encouraging effort on the part of the poster should be encouraged not discouraged. Especially here at Explosm where spelling, grammar, and a moderate degree of intelligence are required on the part of the user. Besides, I'd rather take the time to read one thread someone put thought and effort into posting than somebody stating, "omg that wuz gud" and "I agree lolz" type posts. These guidelines also do not imply that ever single thread in the Media Whorehouse should be written as a review. Nor do they attempt to force the user into making a ridiculously long post. Length is not something specified.

In all honesty I don't see the guideline as a huge list of things, on the contrary, it seems rather small to me. You are right though, most of the things covered in that list would be covered in a typical type thread (which is why they were included to begin with). The review guidelines are something transitional and it is natural to meet change with apprehension. We actually do want to improve the thread quality and discussion here so we are trying something new. Please allow for some time to pass, and for us to work out the kinks before you pass judgment.

There really isn't a limit in the scope of what you can review, except that it should be something htis forum is about; games, music, books, movies. The date of release is not a limitation so it doesn't need to be brand new. If you heard a CD that was older but you liked it, or a game you played that you thought was worth reviewing, those would be fine to review. Like I stated before though, not everything HAS to be a review.

I don't see anything wrong with that, it would help to avoid clutter.

and while I'm at it, I'll ad my two cents to this topic.

When I tried to review a group I saw and it was well thought out, I didn't get the response i was looking for. Audioslave tried to give some explanation but for a majority of the thread, it was kinda a failure.

When Shumh tried to review the latest NIN CD I was the only one that responded. I got the album and while i thought it was good, no one even bothered with it.

Intelligence isn't this place's strong point because we know that television rots your brain, hence the shitty posting.

A subforum would be a great place to and get this off the ground. People may get a better feel for this after a couple of reviews are done.

Review: I thought of the thread "Reviews and you" to be a long epic journey of questions and answers. Going all the way through it can be annoying for some and entertaining for others. People wondering what to use for ratings and such are very common on the thread. It's quite impresive how many reviews the thread currently has. I chose to review this thread because I wanted to share it with the rest of you. Your welcome.
