View Full Version : Sexism: Right or wrong?

Well since I'm here, time to ask a question that's been argued since... Well ever since we could read and write history. Do you think that sexism has any substance, and do you think that the USA is ready for a female president (Hilary Clinton)?
I personally believe that sexism is plain stupid, because a lot of the "manly" things we do can be done as good or even better by women. A lot of women are smarter than men, but maybe they're less lazy, I'll never know. And though I think sexism is BS, I definitely do not think that the USA is ready for a female or even a colored president. After 231 years of pure white man after white man, not many people are going to be open to a change. I'm too young to vote, but I would definitely be ready to elect Obama or H. Clinton.
Enough of my thoughts, let us see what you think.

Sexism in the sense that treating women as lesser people than men is obviously wrong.
But one thing that overly politically correct persons don't seem to understand is that men and women are both physiologically and psychologically very different.
They are not the same, and therefore should not be treated as identical.
We play different roles in life and in evolution. Childbearers/caretakers as opposed to hunters/protectors.
These differences are not as apparent or as applicable in this relatively safe and easy age we live in, but our genes have not yet had time to adapt to these lifestyle changes (sitting on computers etc. that don't fall into the predetermined purposes defined by the the lifestyles of the last 200,000 years).

Eh, this is going to be a pretty split topic.. The only people who are going to think traditional sense sexism is right... Are sexists. And as a general rule, sexists aren't going to change their views because of a forum topic.. Anyway, I think that sexism and feminism are two closely-linked topics. While I don't think that women are lessers to men, I do think that there are things in the world that were made, plain and simple, for men to do. While a woman is welcome to become a steel fabricator, that's generally a male-oriented job. On the topic of feminism, also, I believe that women only fuel sexism sometimes, with their actions. Women advocated for feminism for all the RIGHT reasons, but so-called feminists nowadays use it simply to their advantage. They ARE equal to men, but they only want that when it's beneficial to them. Attractive women all over the world use their looks to avoid traffic tickets, get out of trouble.. How often can men do that? So of course there's a LITTLE sexism, but women feel it towards men all the same as well. While it's not RIGHT techically, it does exist, and there's not much of a way around that.

I didn't create this to change views, just so people can discuss, defend and show the world their views.

And for future posters, keep in mind there is the second question:
Is America ready for a woman to be a president?

Yeah, seriously, if I pee sitting down people shouldn't call me less of a man.
While a woman is welcome to become a steel fabricator, that's generally a male-oriented job.
Why is it a male oriented job? Because it traditionally has been that way? Nursing was a female oriented job which now has no gender bias. Why? Because we let men in. We don't treat them like they can't do a proper job because they're male, we don't pay them less because they are male, we don't treat them as INFERIOR because they are the opposite sex.
I'm going into mechanical engineering. I can tell you now that I'll likely be in the top of my class, but I can also tell you that it's likely that everyone else will have jobs before me, because I'm a girl. The world is still a sexist place. you don't have to be outright like saying women belong barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen to be sexist. A lot of it is unconscious behaviors that you may not notice yourself doing but which contribute to it as a whole.
I do agree with you about the so-called 'feminism' that women seem to spout these days.

I feel this all the time. My two best friends are girls and they can do stuff I would never be able to do, simply because they are attractive. This goes as far as going into 21+ clubs when they're only 18, to being able to buy scratchers and cigarettes when they were only 17. When was the last time a guy ever got out of a traffic ticket simply by wearing pants that are too tight and show off the family jewels. They're sexism in our world because we are physically different . Sometimes it is directed towards men, but primarily it is directed towards women. Right or wrong, it still exists and I don't see that changing any time soon.

ppl should not be determination fo is race' colur or sex.
abaut hilary Clinton i dont know becuase im nor american, but if the peapole of america think she will be a good president so be it.
This is a very interesting and agonizing topic. Firstly, I felt that racism is worse than gender discrimination because for some reason I felt the roots were deeper and human rights should be more important than gender bias. Women have always been seen as less important to men. From cavemen dragging their women, to women covering up completely because a man says so, woman have been discriminated upon creating a sense of racism towards them. Ultimately, gender discrimination can be embedded into racism and make it overwhelmingly worse.
A woman not receiving the same amount of salary a man receives for the same job is unacceptable. A man not getting promoted before a woman he performed finer than is unacceptable. It doesn't matter whose team you are rooting for, discrimination should cease. Media, along with history, has painted the image of the woman as a kind of being who have had to fight for the same rights as men, and still today face more discrimination than men do. From small business, to corporate America at it's best, top one hundred out of five hundred, finely tuned companies, all who have shown me that women still fight for equal rights, as clear as the sunniest day.
Enslaved people are less important than discriminated women because in a way women are enslaved. They are captured in a cycle to always be one step lower on the pedestal, silver and not gold, thriving to be the best, for a woman.
