Last Fall I made two TV commercials for Orange Mobile (it's a cell phone company). They aired on a few channels in the UK.

Well, today I came across them on youtube, and wanted to share them with my non-British buddies who never got to see them on TV.

So here you go: yawn (http://youtube.com/watch?v=mR3eG7qn2hI) and sfx (http://youtube.com/watch?v=NDtKax3nqgE). I did all the animation, sound effects, and voices. It was the definition of a one man production (and it probably shows).

The whole ad campaign was a blast. We still get emails from people claiming Orange "ripped us off", even though we created everything.

I hope everyone enjoys them. Don't forget to check out Kris and Chase's new short (http://www.explosm.net/movies/141/)!

Wow...thats your actual animation made in flash? Aired on tv?

Awesome! Great job Rob.
Did it pay good?

They were funny.

Why didn't the other writers make some or help out?

Why didn't the other writers make some or help out?

We had a few sessions and came up with a couple dozen ideas, but they ended up picking one of mine (yawn) and one that our client in London thought up (sfx).

It was all four of us for the writing portion.

Must have taken weeks to think up of that kind of material.

Those are great. I think they would have lost something if they did not have that one man production crew feel.

I actually laughed out loud for both videos.
Whatever happened to your deal with Orange?
I assume they just went for a different marketing campaign...

Also while I was looking at the videos, I came across this (http://explosm.blogspot.com/search/label/Mortes?updated-max=2007-09-18T00%3A25%3A00-03%3A00&max-results=20).
Could be of some help to the translation thing, I guess.

Jesus, those are hilarious. I like the drawing thing you did with them, that's pretty clever. I'm kind of sad they didn't air here in Canada. That would have been cool being able to say I know the guy who made a commercial.

They made me laugh.

For the rough hand coloured look, did you redraw frames manually, or did you use some other kind of tool?

It's pseudo-FBF. At first, the bodies and heads are nested tweened graphics consisting of only an outline. Then I go in and draw a looping "rough paint" cycle under both outlines (which tweens with the head/body). Then I duplicated the outline animations four times and skewed/resized them throughout the animation to make the lines look like they had varying thickness, even though they were shape tweens.

It looks like it took longer than it did. I was on a tight schedule. It's pretty much a C&H short with more layers, more attention to detail, and jittery fills.

Hmm I never tought about this... Cool technic :)
I'll try it when I have 500+ comics, become famous and learn how to animate, heh.

Woah, that was some excellent amination. I actually lol'd at the fat guy's face in the second one.

I never saw these on TV =/

one that our client in London thought up (sfx).
It was pretty authentic.

I did all the animation, sound effects, and voices.
I'm sure I could hear your woman's voice in the movie...

Well, Rob's chick voice is pretty classic. I always chuckle when I hear a short with him impersonating a woman.

Now that would explain it, I know whenever I go into my local cinema I always think "They look like they've been ripped off of C&H" because they have an Orange Wednesdays sign in the lobby. Thats pretty damn awesome!

Not as funny as the videos I have to say, nevertheless shocked and and little excited to see C&H on Facebook like that...

Another sighting, same gag, different aspect ratio. Just in case anyone wanted to see them (it's pot luck whether you get an explosm ad or a different one)

As a regular visitor to this site i remember seeing this thread a while ago, and i just want to point out that its all a load of bull. These never aired in the UK, in fact they have nothing to do with Orange. The images Orange use for their adverts come from a data bank that was created by their design team, and nothing to do with this site or any of its creators. The clips on youtube are not even orange adverts, as Oranges design Team who deal with their cinema promotions have never used 'The Futures Bright' slogan on their cinema adverts. There are several other flaws in the clips which prove it not Orange, but i wont bore you with all of the details. And before i get slated for dissing one of the wonderful people who you all love who run this forum, i know this as my other half is a marketing exec at Orange HQ in the UK, and i got her to check it out, after i saw one of their adverts that looks like C&H.

Sorry

Those two adverts were run in conjunction with a print and online campaign. You can see the special section Orange made for the "Orange Wednesdays" campaign here: http://orangewednesdays.orange.co.uk/

This wasn't handled by Orange's design team. We were hired through an ad firm working for Orange to handle the campaign. Rob made those ads. We handled the whole campaign.

Sorry
