Crappy excuse for an excuse. He should have just struck up a conversation, it's not that bad. Instead you get the guy who keeps his head down and has these conversations in his head and goes home, probably in a small room with his door shut, and writes about it on internet pages. Sounds like a winner. What he should have done was been a bit more forceful. In that situation the right way would be to go up to her and a) smack whatever she was writing in out of her hand and yell 'bitch, you don't need to write and be educated since you'll be spending all day in the kitchen, now make me a sandwich!' or b) smack her, as in the previous, and have sex with her without any introductions, right there on the train, where everyone can see the dominance and know to keep back. That'll win her over for sure.
