View Full Version : Translation Project update!!

We got around 970 applications. Thanks for the huge response. I never imagined we'd have that many bilingual readers excited to help us out like this. I didn't even think we had that many bilingual readers to begin with.

Anyway, 970 applications is a LOT to go through. I'm still in the midst of organizing email addresses and files before we go into phase 2 of the selection process.

I'm not sure when that'll be since I'm currently swamped with school work, as well as a side project with Dave and Kris. Just know that I'm spending my free time organizing the roughly 4,000 images we received in two weeks into separate folders so that the process goes as smoothly as possible.

Thank you for your patience, everyone.

For now, enjoy this gimmick application where someone translated Dave's comic into ebonics. It made us laugh.

You should convert all of your comics into that format that would be sweet.

Well, Rob, could you give a rough number of applications per language, and the languages people translated the comics into?

I'm so excited!
I applicated as a German translator and hope you will pick me, because I'm good with puns!
And don't let anyone tell you that you can't translate the comics because they wouldn't be funny anymore.
You can translate most comics if you know what you're doing and try hard enough.

Here are some translations of other complicated comics, including some that other Germans in this forums claimed to be untranslatable.

@TomSFox:
Der erste is total lahm, was an der deutschen Sprache liegt oO
Den zweiten fand ich im Orig schon nich gut und er wirkt auch lahm^^
Der Dritte ist echt gut geworden, man merkt kaum dasses überstezt worden ist.
Hm der Vierte war schwer zu übersetzen, nicht mein Humor.
Und der Fünfte ist einfach nur genial, was wohl am Witz liegt xDD
Artworks sind gut, die Berarbeitung sieht man den Comics auf den ersten Blick nich an.

JonMiguels da Tapera?
Frasson = fofinho?

"uhahuahuahuahua" is a cool way of laughing!
"ROFL", "LOL" and all sorts of abbreviations are, in fact, the weird stuff.
Like backao mentioned, they express your feelings accordingly:

"hahahaha" - bursting in laughs
"hehehe" - laugh if you don't want to loose a friend
"hihihi" - kind of a hidden, shy laugh
"hohoho" - not Santa, but usually said after suggesting something, uhmm, appealing, or after pissing someone off xD
"huhuhu" - weird, mostly used by EMOs

"huahuauhahua", "hueuheuheu", and variations are for fast typing, because you use three fingers instead of two, making 50% more spam than with only "hehehe" or "hahaha" :P
Abbreviations , as previously said, are weird stuff, therefore "rsrsrs" and "kkkkk" are weird and/or for weirdos.
Oh, "rs" is more for chuckles than laughing :P

Renatopb, isn't it more convincing to use the third person speech instead of the second one, considering that most parts of Brazil have that characteristic?
Besides that the majority of people who uses "tu" don't use it right, like you did there.

Even being born here in south I've translated "you" into "você". :o

There are variations even more spammy, like in "aheiuheaiuheaiueha", which you use not only three, but five fingers! :D

How did you translate the word "douchebag"?

I translated it with "sacco di merda". It was the best one I could think of, considering that in English the word douchebag had too many a meaning, (originally being an "irrigatore vaginale", commonly meaning "stronzo", or "coglione", and playing on the correspondance with the depicted shopping bags), I chose to keep only the word play and generalise the vulgar expression.

And you, what did you use?

You're all missing something, cause the word "DouchèBag" is used as offence, but it means also a bag that contains feminile products (clisteri), so maybe the right translation could be "Sacco di clisteri" , or "Clisteromane". In my opinion.

"Need a hand?" in English is like asking "do you need help?"
But in Hebrew, the same phrase doesn't have both meanings.
Therefore, the phrase "working hands" will do the trick.

Nhé....
Pará, Pernambuco, RN, and soooo maaaaany other states use TU. Think of "òxenti bichinho, tu sabi qui é mermu?". Other than SP, and perhaps PR, where people DO say VOCÊ a lot, I do believe TU is used more frequently. As a matter of fact, I was never taught to use "você" in school. It was always: Eu, tu, ele/ela, nós, vós, eles/elas.

BTW, I don't think modification was necessary in the bags comic. True, some meanings were not precisely the same, but hey! 'tis still funny!

Hey portuguese girl, I don't believe we use "mete-nojo" here. At least I never heard of if. Sounds to me like it means something like "show off" ("exibido"). Am I right?
Oh! And do you know "Bicha do demônio"? Funny portuguese shit xD Congrats, overseas bros! If not, look for it on YouTube.

So, Mike, Dave, Rob,
Do we need to wait for the contest results, or are we free to start translating the crap out of the comics and flood your mailboxes? xD

xoxoxoxox <-- and they say "uhauhauha" is gay

ababakar

what do you think of "sac à foutre" ( cum bag) to translate douche bag in french , because it keeps the idea of the bag and you just have to change feminine hygiene products by feminine contraceptives ( preservatifs feminins) in the precedent case ( the feminine condom is literally a sac à foutre which is also an insult in french)

I'd put " main secoureuse " ( "saving" hand) for the one about the hands . And the comic about the mini golf can be translated almost word to word.

Scheiße.
What part of "Germans" didn't you get?

@TomSFox:
Der erste is total lahm, was an der deutschen Sprache liegt oO
Du musst mir aber Punkte für Originalität geben!
Ich bin mir sicher, die meisten anderen hätten es gar nicht erst hingekriegt, dass der Witz auf Deutsch funktioniert.

Ich fasse deine Bewertung mal als "insgesamt gut" auf.
Hast du dich denn auch beworben?

Nice, but I think you missed something.
"Need a hand?" in English is like asking "do you need help?"
But in Hebrew, the same phrase doesn't have both meanings.
Therefore, the phrase "working hands" will do the trick.

I get a little bit geeky when it comes to translation :-P

Actually... I do remember it having those two meanings also in Hebrew :o I could be wrong, but I do look at them the same!

I'm something of a translation geek too. I used "רוצה שאתן יד?" myself. (That way, you get the "need some help?" meaning also...I think. Don't people use that? I hope so, otherwise I've just been sounding stupid all these years. I tried to post the comic, hope it worked. I am sort of technologically challenged.) What did you do for the "douchebag" comic?

Hi,
I read C&H regularly for a year and I LOVE IT! Unfortunately, I've found out about this contest just few moments ago. I was wondering if there were any participants translating into Czech. I kinda doubt that...

So, is there any posibility to apply now? Or, is there any chance for some kind of second chance in the near future for people who missed it the first time?

CharlieH

I'm pretty sure you have missed any deadlines now. Rob has spent that last few month organizing all the entries, and i'm willing to bet he is just about sick of the existing ones, let alone any new ones.

Sorry dude.

However, welcome to the forums my overseas friends. :)
