Jack Black stars in "Brutal Legend", a new game by Tim Schafer, creator of "Monkey Island", "Grim Fandango", and "Psychonauts". A roadie named Eddie Riggs, played by Black, is setting up for a show when he gets injured and starts to bleed. The blood gets on his cursed belt buckle, which takes him into an alternate dimension in the past where demons rule the human race.
It'll also star Ronnie James Dio, Lemmy (bass guitarist/vocalist for Motörhead), and Rob Halford (vocalist for Judas Priest).
The soundtrack is set to include brand new music by Zakk Wylde, Tim Skold, Wolfmother, Judas Priest, and Ronnie James Dio, with extended guitar solos by Judas Priest guitarists K. K. Downing and Glenn Tipton. Tim Schafers' long term collaborator Peter McConnell is also involved in the soundtrack.

"Brutal Legend" will come out sometime in 2008 for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.
So, anyone else think this'll be pretty awesome? I mean, you go around chopping demons in half and doing guitar solos that literally melt faces off! Looks promising.

Hell ya. This guy has such a great such of humor and I've always imagined a game where you can kill people with guitar riffs. It looks like the perfect insane type of game that only Tim Schafer can come up with, and if Psyconauts taught us anything, this game will be great.

It was only officially announced about a month ago you liar
Anyway, I've decided Schafer is my future husband. Grim Fandango and Psychonauts are my all-time favourite games, so I've pretty much been orgasming since I heard about this game. Schafer really is a comedic genius (check out doublefine's (http://www.doublefine.com/) blog thingy), and as far as gameplay goes you can melt peoples faces.

I was reading about this game last night, and it looks really cool. I like how they're actually setting it in a past that is based around rock and roll, as though it were part of the world. There will be huge amps for cliffs and stuff like that. You can modify the car that you build, and recruit minion-types to battle with you. Instead of magic, you play his guitar, and it's like casting spells, which is a really cool feature.

Bump, for I have played the demo.
I honestly cannot remember the last time I was this impressed by a game. I looked in the mirror, and my face has literally melted off my head.
This game projects that whole "SHIT YEH! HEAVY METAL, MOTHERFUCKER!" vibe perfectly, and the humor is absolutely spot on. The characters and world are amazingly detailed and intricate, the fighting mechanics are fucking perfect (you can catch people on fire with power chords), and I can't remember ever laughing this hard at a game. Ever.
If the full game is ANYTHING like the demo, it's game of the year. Hands down. In the first fifteen minutes, I saw a giant metal demon roar a metalcore band's heads off, murdered druids on top of a gigantic pile of corpses, destroyed a building with a power chord, put a fucking awesome car together, then proceeded to run over abut four hundred bazillion bad guys in said car with a hot chick in the passenger seat.
Let me repeat that.

It's a pretty fun demo, except at the very end of it I had absolutely no clue how to do something. You had to close a gate, meaning destroying these engine-shaped counterweights. Apparently you do and Earthshaker move and they fall down. Even though they aren't even touching the Earth, so they couldn't have been shaken. But whatever, no big deal.
Not a big metal fan, but it's got a pretty nice soundtrack to it. And it probably has the best menu I've seen.

Just played the demo for Xbox. Solid, simple controls, smooth gameplay, hilarious dialog. I think my favorite part is you can choose whether or not to have profanities (I chose no, because the beep sounds are funny). Jack Black does an awesome job, it's not his usual over-the-top self. Definitely getting this as soon as it comes out.

Am I the only one who didn't find the demo all that great? I thought the combat was mediocre at best. It was just generic hack-and-slash with a long-range "magic" attack that overheats really fast.
I found some of the dialogue to be extremely stupid too. Some of it was just so forced and ridiculous that I actually sighed a couple of times and shook my head. As much as I wanted to like this game, it just wasn't as awesome as I was hoping it to be. I think the only reason I would ever play it would be to hear Tim Curry and see how they worked in all the metal influences. But I'd be bored as hell the entire game.

It wasn't the type of humor, it was the writing itself. It was BAD. Did anyone really think the "I'll show you what a french kiss is" part was funny? It was like a 10 year old wrote the script.
The whole rock/metal thing is interesting enough but the dialogue is just so bad. I've never been so ashamed of the things I've heard in a video game. I think I sighed more times in the demo then I did while playing Gears of War.

Obviously you just have a different sense of humor. I actually chuckled at those one-liners. It's sort of like Army of Darkness, but less so. They KNEW they were being retarded. It's the self-awareness and irony that really make it funny. It's not a stand-up routine, it's a tribute/spoof of metal.
By the way, stop making broad generalizations. You didn't like the demo, but that doesn't mean the whole game is shit or that you need to "fear for future games." There are more cock-joke games than games like Brutal Legend.

I just didn't like the game in general. I found the gameplay to be OK at best and the jokes really killed what could have been an enjoyable plot. I ended up not knowing what I disliked more, the groan-inducing jokes or the generic hack-and-slash combat. Maybe it's just because I had such high hopes for this game. I was really expecting it to be an enjoyable spoof but ended up being disappointed in nearly every way possible.

The rest of the game's humour probably is the same, and the combat does seem like every other 3D brawler ever. I mean come on, you keep smashin A alot to do one combo, and press X at the end to do the other combo; that's one step down from the heavy-attack light-attack thing every other beat-em-up uses. Y'all are defending the game in all the wrong places.
Actually the combat does change later on. You get to order a group of guys to stand still, defend or attack- pretty much like Overlord, and you can mount girls on your shoulders to do extra stuff. I don't know what that plays like, but puttin guys ontop of you looks kind of funny.
The one-liners are a bit like an outdated 80s action comedy. Personally I love stuff like that cos it sets a kind of atmosphere that I'm into, but I'm not really laughing at it. The stuff he says while he's riding the big metal spider thing is funny though.
I <3 this game, but yo I can see why other guys won't. That teaser they showed ages ago has a totally different atmosphere than the finished game.

This game simply has to be approached in the right way. I found the game humorous, including the one liners strewn around. The entire game is really smooth actually; it's meant to be simple to play, comedic, and also to enjoy metal. The actual gameplay plays like Kingdom Under Fire as well, except you can feel like a bad ass when you melt the faces off of demons with your guitar.
I have this reserved and look forward to playing it with my Tenacious D guitar.

I think it's more due to the fact that it never stops. It started out kinda funny but when you're getting a ridiculous one-liner every 10 seconds it gets old fast. Really fast. If he had shut up during combat I might have been able to tolerate it but you're still hearing stupid comments while you're fighting stuff.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the game's opening scene. I thought I'd really like it. But there wasn't much to enjoy once I actually started playing it.

Good God this game is amazing. Picked it up today, and it's way too fun. The multiplayer takes a couple tries to get the hang of, but it's really solid.

It's kind of like a more RTSey version of Overlord. Each team has a stage that they use to train units. The units all have different advantages and disadvantages, and each team has a super unit. You have to destroy the other team's stage in order to win.
It actually works really well. You control a "general" who can play guitar solos to add buffs and special moves, and you can also fly around the level. You have to capture geysers that shoot out fans by building merch booths over them. It's really fun once you get a feel for it.

I downloaded and played the demo and really enjoyed it. The controls were good (although I kept forgetting what to push for the axe, I kept thinking A was a jump button or whatever just from habit), the humor was good, and the sound/video was good. Even though I'm not much of a metalhead I did enjoy the soundtrack or what little of it was on the demo. I plan on buying it at some point, theres just other stuff I'd like to get first.

Slowly playing through this game, I think it's really awesome. Just how you go about doing everything is great, and all the upgrades and everything you can do just fits in well. The game manages to retain a nice amount of humor throughout as well.

Who gives a shit about what site rated the game what? Overall, it's received pretty fucking solid reviews. Personally, my massive boner for the game hasn't become any less sturdy and powerful.

Does the combat progress more than just a standard attack button, an area of effect attack, and the electric guitar lightning or are they the only things you can do?

I haven't fucked with multiplayer yet, but if it's anything like that one stage battle you do about 4 missions in, I'm not particularly interested.

Multiplayer is a stage battle, yeah. Except this battle is with another actual person, and you're on one of three sides, each with different units and uses. The goal is to destroy the other stage, and the progression is pretty much capturing those merch shops one by one until you get so many fans you can upgrade all the way and get those epic units that take all of your units and "hero" to destroy. Fun stuff, but the unit management is a bit painful sometimes.

I rather like the unit management now that I've gotten used to it.

I just completed this on Brutal difficulty. To anyone who hasn't picked this up yet, go do it, there is a GREAT sense of completion after finishing this game. If you do everything it should take a bit over 15-18 hours. The multiplayer to all those asking is very simple and yet entertaining.

Oh and the tracks are SWEET.

The only time anybody gives two shits about Gamespot is when they're holding a contest, otherwise most people accept the fact that Gamespot has some of the shittiest reviewers ever. (Halo is rated 9.5, Monster Hunter has a 5.3 or something like that)
Picked up this game today after learning that Borderlands is sold out because for some fucking reason EB games thought it was a brilliant idea to only order 4 copies (durrhrr) and I'm really enjoying this game. I always liked Tim Schafer's work. Hopefully, this and Borderlands will tide me over 'til the next big release.

Make sure to do ALL the side quests like I did, the rewards are awesome. Sometimes Call of the Wild summons will seem to downgrade, but eventually when you get the last one, IT FUCKING KICKS ASS.

I didn't really like the game that much, I mean it was a good game but I thought the direction it was taken in was bad. I was stupidly mislead by the demo into thinking it was an action game when really it was a RTS-ish game. It wasn't a bad game it had some good things to it but the repeatitive side missions and overall short game made me feel it could have been done better.
I throughly enjoyed the first few hours but after that it lost something. Somewhere between hearing "we're just marching around kicking ass" and "who we waiting for?" "bad guys wanna help?' it lost something on me.
I played the demo but wasn't amazed by it. It might be worth a rental but I doubt much more. Just wasn't THAT funny to me.
I feel the same way. It was alright, and I thought it was funny at times, but the simple controls got boring for me... I understand, and even appreciate, the idea of a guy as amazing as Jack Black making a video game, and it wasn't a complete failure, it could just be executed better.

I just got the game yesterday and I have to say It is a pretty good game so far. I had played the Demo on my brother's 360 because He has Live and I don't. I was hooked on the Demo and when I saw It in the store I bought it.
