View Full Version : Saddest song you know?

Yeah, I realize there are a lot of songs out there, but when I'm in a weird mood I like to try and find some good ones.. Good in a relative sense, of course. I've got a lot of sad songs, but I think the one that gets to me the most is You Never Know by Immortal Technique f/ Jean Grae (http://ohhla.com/anonymous/immortal/rev_vol2/younever.tch.txt). Yeah, I know, blah blah rap sucks.. If you've never listened to Immortal Technique though, you don't know what you're missing out on. Hip hop at one of its peaks. Anyway, the way he comes across in his songs just gives you this eerie sense that the stories he's telling are true. You really have to hear the song to get the full impact, but it's very sad, and it really makes you think. So please, share your favorite sad song, or just the one you think is the saddest.

Edit: Some of the lyrics are incorrect, not that big of a deal.. In the chorus, it should be "Can't find, a reason why
God came, between you and I"

The Johnny Cash cover of Hurt by the Nine Inch Nails. It's one of the only songs to ever actually make me weepy.

The video to that song was even sadder. Johnny Cash was in really ill health and suffering from Parkinsons. The way it was shot with the huge banquet and lavishness in the face of his failing health was truly heart breaking. The song coincidentally was completely fitting though.

Seeing that video was actually the way I was introduced to the song. The video was really well done, even if it was quite saddening. Not to mention he did an amazing job covering the song. It certainly gave a good tug on the old heartstrings.

That last few albums of Johnny Cash's were all done by with direction under Rick Rubin. He had a lot of input into what Cash would sing and how it was arranged. "Hurt" was so fitting because it's as the song was written for him. When he sings,

"what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt

I will let you down
I will make you Hurt."

Red to Black - Fort Minor
Faces in the Hall - Gym Class Heroes

Both bands, unfortunately, got their shittiest songs played on the radio despite having some damn good songs. Faces in the Hall is actually really good and really depressing. It's about a gay kid who gets beat to death at a party by some drunk students while his girlfriend gets hooked on crack.

Paint it Black by The Rolling Stones as well. Mainly just because it reminds me of the movie Stir of Echoes and all the sweet storylines in Twisted Metal Black.

Edit: And Mad World as Cristo said. It always reminds me of Donnie Darko.

A boy and his frog.

I feel stupid for getting misty eyed over a puppet singing about his puppeteer's death.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Na-xvlYMGck

Life is unfair, so they tell me,
Because they think I wouldn't know.
They only can see a cheap gimmick
On their children's favorite show.

They say, "Oh, that's just foam and a wire,
Attached to a green velvet sleeve,
Anyone can do that" -- well, that's true, I suppose,
But who else could make them believe?

What can I say without you there to guide me?
How else am I supposed to give?
How can I sing without you there beside me?
How else am I supposed to live?

You could never just do the expected,
I was just an idea in a bog,
But you sewed up your dream
and we made quite a team,
Jim and Kermit, a boy and his frog.

It was me, Rolph, and you,
but I think that he knew
There was something that you and I had.
The magic we made just kept growing,
And none of it ever was bad.

Then came Ernie and Scooter and Gonzo,
Doctor Teeth, Cookie Monster, and more.
But now all of those voices are silent,
And I want to go on... but what for?

No one can make me what you did,
No one could walk in your shoes,
Nothing can make me forget you,
But that's not a thing that I'd choose.

I can't just let it be over,
And you wouldn't want it that way,
So I'll stand up and I'll face it,
And, though not quite in your voice, I'll say:

I will go on without you there to guide me,
There's so much more I can give.
Whenever I sing, you will be there beside me,
As long as I keep you, you'll live.

We just wanted to make people smile,
I was always much more than your toy.
I will never regret and I'll never forget
What we had,
I'll miss you, Dad,
This frog and his boy.

Biffy Clyro, Machines - it's a somng about the singer's mum dying. It's sad as hell but it's beautiful. I can just listen to it for hours on end.

"I would dig a thousand holes to lay next to you
I would dig a thousand more if I needed to
I look around the grave for an escape route of old routines
There doesn’t seem to be any other way

Cause I’ve started falling apart I’m not savouring life
I’ve forgotten how good it could be to feel alive

Crazy as it sounds you wont feel as low as you feel right now
At least that’s what I’ve been told by everyone
I whisper empty sounds in your ear and hope that you won’t let go
Take the pieces and build them skywards

Cause I’ve started falling apart I’m not savouring life
I’ve forgotten how good it could be to feel alive

I’ve started falling apart I’m not savouring life
Take the pieces and build them skywards
I’ve forgotten how good it could be to feel alive
Take the pieces and build them skywards...
Take the pieces and build them up to the sky."

It's the first song on their Myspace (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=7901934) player.

One of the songs that make me sad, is Aeries' Theme from FFVII (preferably, the actual piano version). First time I heard it was obviously when she was killed and it just kills me when I hear it. But I never grow tired of it. Also, I don't get super sad or anything, but Sunday Bloody Sunday by U2 is sad, for what its referring to and whatnot.

The song, "Learn to be Lonely" from the Andrew Lloyd Webber version of Phantom of the Opera is pretty sad(it's the song that plays during the end credits). I can't think of anymore at hte moment.

The Johnny Cash version of Hurt is much more depressing than Nine Inch Nails version. Something about Johnny singing it, is just so gut-wrenching. Rick Rubin, I can say, is one hell of a producer.

EDIT: Another sad song, is "When The Tigers Broke Free" by Pink Floyd. Not really any guitar playing or anything, but the lyrics and whatnot, are actually sad. I wish it was longer, believe it or not. Still great though.

Anyways I'll add Broken by Seether. http://youtube.com/watch?v=sQo8xGYMm04 I've never actually seen that video with Amy Lee, it is made a bit differently than the original, I like it though.

The original by Tears for Fears isn't bad. The thing is their version is more of an upbeat, 80's New Wave/Dance thing. I was actually listening to an interview with the two guys behind the band, and when asked about Jules' cover, they said that they preferred it to the original.

Rob's first reply is pretty good, but I don't find The Luckiest really sad because it's more of a love song... while using death to explain love for someone.
Amazing that you listen to Ben Folds, though.

I think Hear You Me by Jimmy Eat World is the saddest song I know. I get chills, especially when he sings "God wouldn't let it live." And in one of the versions I have, he almost agonizingly screams "May angels lead you in" near the end. I love it more than having the woman sing it on the other version.
What Hurts the Most by Rascall Flatts is pretty sad too, but I really only feel how sad it is when I watch the video for it. So Hear You Me would still be the saddest.

Well said. "But I'm thinking of what Sarah said is that 'love is watching someone die.'

So who's going to watch you die?"

Sends chills down my spine every time.

Also, Don't I Hold You? by Wheat. This is pretty much an unknown gem of a song, one that I like to keep hidden but seriously its one of the most beautiful, delicate things I've ever heard. It easily holds up as probably my favourite song that I've discovered this year. Check it out.

Whoever mentioned Hear You Me is right as well. Jimmy Eat World are one of my favourite bands, and I hate people labelling them as 'pop punk.' They're a million times bigger than that.

Here's some fantastic tear-jerking Jimmy Eat World songs, songs that mean quite a lot to me personally:

Roller Queen
Kill

Also, here's a list of fantastically sad songs in general;

For reals, though, King of Carrot Flowers Part 1 by Neutral Milk Hotel.

When you were young
You were the king of carrot flowers
And how you built a tower tumbling through the trees
In holy rattlesnakes that fell all around your feet

And your mom would stick a fork right into daddy's shoulder
And dad would throw the garbage all across the floor
As we would lay and learn what each other's bodies were for

And this is the room
One afternoon I knew I could love you
And from above you how I sank into your soul
Into that secret place where no one dares to go

And your mom would drink until she was no longer speaking
And dad would dream of all the different ways to die
Each one a little more than he could dare to try

Leaving Hope - Nine Inch Nails

It's an instrumental that TR wrote at the bottom of drug addiction and alcoholism. It has a piano line through the whole song and it really brings me down..

Nice... I totally forgot about that song. Most stuff around The Fragile was really emotionally charged and made me depressed. TR is amazing.

Honestly I think Pool Shark by Sublime is a sad song, since it talks about how Brad is struggling with his addiction and what happened after the fact. He was a amazing musician, also Don't Go Away by Oasis makes me feel kinda down when I hear it.

Miserable at Best by Mayday Parade is pretty sad.

"It's been three whole days since I've had sleep
Because I dream of his lips on your cheek
And I got the point that I should leave you alone
But we both know that I'm not that strong
And I miss the lips that made me fly"

Awesome songs.

Sense Field - Save Yourself (Maybe it's just me. I heard this when I found out an ex of 2 years was sleeping around whilst with me)
30 Seconds to Mars - Saviour
Rise Against - Roadside (Think it's been said)
Death Cab for Cutie - Marching Bands of Manhattan

Argh, I used to know loads of sad songs. I can't think of that many right now though. A lot of good ones have been said though.

Sixx A.M. - Girl With The Golden Eyes...NO other song really points out what it feels like to be at the lowest point of a drug addiction quite like this, Nikki Sixx is in my opinion, the greatest songwriter of ALL time!
Guns N Roses - November Rain
Hinder - Better Than Me...this song is great, shows how addiction can destroy a relationship, something I experianced last year. I saw these guys live last week, fuckin' amazing, good 2 see a new band that actually knows what theyre doing.
Vains Of Jenna - Lit Up, Let Down...this band are great, easily the next Guns N Roses, theyre gonna go on to do great things, Lizzy DeVine's voice is amazing in this song.
Buckcherry - Sorry
Motley Crue - Without You

'nuff said.

Nine Inch Nails has a few depressing songs:

"Hurt" (The Downward Spiral)
"The Great Below" (The Fragile)
"Something I Can Never Have" (Pretty Hate Machine)

Well now I feel like a fag, having had a month old thread provide the means to make me cry. Anyways, I would probably say some songs they had us sing back when I was in the Boy Scouts would get me the most emotionally, not really because of the lyrics but because of the tone. After my mom went out and bought some Johnny Cash's greatest hits CD and I heard Hurt, I thought it was pretty fucking sad, the video just reinforced that.

On a daily basis the most depressing stuff I hear is either a slow Rammstein song, a random pseudo-emotional Tool song, or one of a few sad Metallica songs. I probably need to expand my musical horizons one of these days.

St. Ides of March and I Can't Wait by the White Stripes.

As undoubtedly many people have mentioned, Mad World by Gary Jules and Hurt by Johnny Cash are both sad songs, although I can't claim to listen to either of those two tracks very often.

OK, Ulver's "Vigil" immediately goes up as the saddest song ever. It's off of their new album, Shadows of the Sun.

This Ruined Puzzle-Dashboard Confessional
All Hail the Heart Breaker-The Spill Canvas
It's OK We Can Still Be Friends-Bright Eyes
Far Away Boys-Flogging Molly

Bright Eyes, Spill Canvas, and Ben Gibbard all just make me depressed right now, because my ex is the one who introduced me to all of these... :wail:

Did someone mention Clint Mansell's movie soundtracks yet? They're amazing and fit the mood of the movie really well.

Clint Mansell - Lux Aeterna (from the movie Requiem for a Dream)
Clint Mansell - Together We Will Live Forever (from the movie Fountain)
Clint Mansell - Death is the Road to Awe (from the movie Fountain)

There are a bunch of other song director's songs I'd mention but they're not as good as Clint Mansell's.
