View Full Version : Why would anyone want a HD-DVD over a BD?

Blu-Ray disc (BD) or HD-DV disc?
The only plus I can see for HD-DVD so far is that apparently it is region-free, while BD has three region codes.
- Oh, and it's probably cheaper
Because silly goose, microsoft picked HD-Dvd.
The only legitimate reason at this time would be the shortages of the blue laser diodes jacking up the cost of the BD players in my opinion.

That's about the gist of it, blue ray discs and players are all too expensive right now to be widespread.

You're forgetting that the average consumer is ignorant as fuck. When someone mentions HD-DVD they hear DVD. Everyone knows what a DVD is. My peers don't know what a blu-ray disc is, so they're not going to consider it, are they?
Isn't the difference between the two the play out variation? Sure, DVD-HD may not store as much as BD, but does BD play out full HD quality?

Blue ray has better quality, is backed by more film companies, has larger space, better read times and you can scrub it with steel wool and it comes out without a scratch. Topics like this have been done to death on nearly every forum on the webbernets.
However, i can see this going real "HD-DVD IS WIN" real quick, as there appears to be a large sack of Xbox fan bois that, for no reasons besides quite simply "its microsoft".
Blue-Ray is apparently outselling HD-DVD 2:1 right now.

I don't understand the difference between either. And what's wrong with normal DVDs? Do I really need to see things in HD or Blu Ray or whatever the fuck?
Just play the fucking movie and get to the part with the titties.

The DVD one is way cheaper. That's all there is to know. Unless you're rediculously careless with your dvds, or you love all the unused space on a Bluray disc: Just buy a DVD player.
EDIT- In fact, you've probably allready got one =O
Blu-Ray = Sony
Sony = PS3
PS3 Sucks Ass.
So it eventually becomes Blu-Ray = Sucks Ass.
:facts:
Plus I can watch stuff on TV that's HD, not Blu-Ray.

I do have a DVD player but it overheated and I need a new one. So is there a quality difference between discs? Besides one being made by one company and the other being made by someone else?

To the people who say "Well, Sony choose to back up Blu-Ray, and use it on their PS3, it must suck ass" your ignorant as you can be. Blu-ray is a completely seperate company. Hell, I know I don't like the PS3 because my friend showboats it as OMG ITS A JESUS CONSOLE while I still play 360 games I bought when I got my 360 last year. But, even I know Blu-Ray is win.

To me, picking between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD is like picking between apples and oranges for the time being. I know some studios like Paramount and Warner Bros. have exclusively picked either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, but I'm not ready to jump out and purchase a player cause they're just too god-damn expensive. I'll wait down the road until they're cheap and they've finally become the norm. Look at it this way: DVD players were expensive as fuck when it debuted in 96-97, but now they're dirt cheap around 60 to 70 dollars each.

Haha, you were almost right, except that the reason is "it's Sony". :fmita:

My dad was looking into buying a BD player because he bought a brand new LCD TV. I told him to just buy a PS3 instead, but I think he figured I was trying to trick him. He really didn't believe me when I said it would be just as easy to get a PS3.

dvd carries 2 gigs.
hd-dvd carries 4 gigs.
blu- ray carries 8 gigs.
The blu-ray uses a blue lazer to scan the disc, which is half as small so it can pack twice the amount of data than a hd-dvd.
HD-DVD are alot cheaper, though.
Blu-Ray comes built in the ps3.
HD-DVD comes as a special attachment for the xbox 360, I think. I'm sure the new xbox 360 elites have them built in.
edit:
Oh, they also have machines out that can play both of them.
The potential data storage for the Blu-Ray Discs in the future is much bigger than the HD-DVD. I'm not sure of the actual numbers, it does mean the BR is more future proof as well.

Uhh.. DVD carries 2 gigs? I think i have never seen a 2gig DVD, every single one is either 4.7 or 8 gigs. And blu-ray can hold up to 25gigs.
I can't really see the difference either :/ . Only that Blu-ray costs a fortune (discs and the players), and do they really put stuff on them already? Besides PS3 games.

oh... my bad on the storage part.
All I know is that blu-ray has tons more, which is reflected in the cost.

Neither, I don't own a TV capable of showing HD :) And I'm not going to buy a PS3/BD player for blu-ray either, until it phases out dvds like dvd's phased out vhs.

I saw one philips Blu-ray player set in a magazine, It cost like 11000eek, thats like over 1000dollars. And that is no smalltime cash. I mean I haven't seen anything for this, besides PS3 games. So really, what IS the difference between Blu-ray and HDDVD besides capacity?
Rainbird

Besides the capacity, Blu-ray has a higher datatransfer rate. Combined with the capacity, it means that Blu-ray has superior picture quality over HD DVD.
Hell, even though Blu-ray disks costs only a little over the average DVD, you still get alot more for the money here, and yes Blu-ray players are expensive as fuck right now, but as with the DVD players, the price is gonna drop by alot in the coming years.
You might be able to tell already, but I voted Blu-ray :king:

Blu-ray has already won.
Blockbuster has been renting both Blu-ray and HD DVD titles in 250 stores since late last year and found that consumers were choosing Blu-ray titles more than 70 percent of the time.
Blockbuster is now backing up Blu-Ray exclusively in the stores now.

Blu-ray holds 25GB, 50GB for a dual layer disk.
