Well, the other day I beat Assassin's Creed, and, upon doing a quick search through the review pile, I thought that I might as well review it.
First off, this game is beautiful. The graphics are some of the best I've laid eyes on in awhile. With every swing of the sword, and every drop of blood, it seems as though you were right there with Altair(the protagonist). The storyline is interesting as well. The twist of it kind of baffled me considering when I First saw this game I thought I was going to be playing a late 12th century assassin with nothing more. Now, I won't spoil the twist, but, if you really wanted to find it it won't take much searching; but, on to the gameplay.
The controls, first off, are very awkward... at first. I don't really want to go into details about it because it's just kinda complicated. Now, the combat. Like the rest of the game, at first it's pretty hard. When you hold the right trigger/R1, your guy is in a defensive mode, basically blocking everything that comes his way. When you let go of the button, you can attack, but, you can't block anything. Now, later in the game you get to counter your enemies attacks if you time it right, and, like much of the game already, this is very hard, but soon becomes second nature. The only complaint I have with the controls is the lack of a challenge. When I was far or even half way through the game, I was basically unkillable, and, now that I mention that, I don't think I ever died once in combat. And when I got really far in the game, I found myself looking for fights just because I liked the counters.
Enough with the controls though; the assassinations. The meat and potatoes of the game, right? Wrong. The assassinations are pretty much once every... Oh, if you take the long way, 3 hours. Now, the short way is much faster I have to admit, but, the game from what I got wants you to do every little tedious task that everyone asks of you going from saving citizens to finding flags. Although the saving of the citizens gives you something in return(usually a hiding spot or a group of allies), everything else is just kind of unneeded. But, I came here to mention the assassinations in this paragraph, did I not? When you get to the assassinations, the game becomes pretty fun, 'cause when you reach your target, there's a small cutscene, then, though the game advertised many different ways to take out your target, there are two ways to go about killing him. Going in guns blazing, or being a sneaky little bastard and depending on whether you gathered the information or not(either way, the route will still be there), you can pretty much find a way to sneak up on your target and kill them and send the place into chaos. That takes us to the escape. Especially fun when you take the games freerunning into play(which I won't go into details about, you just have to experience it to appreciate it). At first, your basically just running to live(or in my case, not to fight), and it's pretty much dog eat dog. You more or less are trying to get to the rooftops and make your escape there. Although, there are many hiding spots that you can use to make the guards stop chasing you, but, it kind of ruins the whole fun. Seeing as this is kind of running long, in short, kill your target, run away, have fun, kill some guards if you chose to, then get back to the "assassin's hangout."
Now, I'll just sum up what's in those three paragraphs, graphics, beautiful, controls, awkward at first, gets easier later in the game, assassinations, are every once in awhile, but fun when you get to them. I'd give this game a need-to-rent, not a buy. The lack of replay value I found in this game was rather disappointing, but the storyline and the game itself are just something you HAVE to experience.
Hopefully my review was through enough, and, enjoy the game when you play it.
