Well, the other day I beat Assassin's Creed, and, upon doing a quick search through the review pile, I thought that I might as well review it.

First off, this game is beautiful. The graphics are some of the best I've laid eyes on in awhile. With every swing of the sword, and every drop of blood, it seems as though you were right there with Altair(the protagonist). The storyline is interesting as well. The twist of it kind of baffled me considering when I First saw this game I thought I was going to be playing a late 12th century assassin with nothing more. Now, I won't spoil the twist, but, if you really wanted to find it it won't take much searching; but, on to the gameplay.

The controls, first off, are very awkward... at first. I don't really want to go into details about it because it's just kinda complicated. Now, the combat. Like the rest of the game, at first it's pretty hard. When you hold the right trigger/R1, your guy is in a defensive mode, basically blocking everything that comes his way. When you let go of the button, you can attack, but, you can't block anything. Now, later in the game you get to counter your enemies attacks if you time it right, and, like much of the game already, this is very hard, but soon becomes second nature. The only complaint I have with the controls is the lack of a challenge. When I was far or even half way through the game, I was basically unkillable, and, now that I mention that, I don't think I ever died once in combat. And when I got really far in the game, I found myself looking for fights just because I liked the counters.

Enough with the controls though; the assassinations. The meat and potatoes of the game, right? Wrong. The assassinations are pretty much once every... Oh, if you take the long way, 3 hours. Now, the short way is much faster I have to admit, but, the game from what I got wants you to do every little tedious task that everyone asks of you going from saving citizens to finding flags. Although the saving of the citizens gives you something in return(usually a hiding spot or a group of allies), everything else is just kind of unneeded. But, I came here to mention the assassinations in this paragraph, did I not? When you get to the assassinations, the game becomes pretty fun, 'cause when you reach your target, there's a small cutscene, then, though the game advertised many different ways to take out your target, there are two ways to go about killing him. Going in guns blazing, or being a sneaky little bastard and depending on whether you gathered the information or not(either way, the route will still be there), you can pretty much find a way to sneak up on your target and kill them and send the place into chaos. That takes us to the escape. Especially fun when you take the games freerunning into play(which I won't go into details about, you just have to experience it to appreciate it). At first, your basically just running to live(or in my case, not to fight), and it's pretty much dog eat dog. You more or less are trying to get to the rooftops and make your escape there. Although, there are many hiding spots that you can use to make the guards stop chasing you, but, it kind of ruins the whole fun. Seeing as this is kind of running long, in short, kill your target, run away, have fun, kill some guards if you chose to, then get back to the "assassin's hangout."

Now, I'll just sum up what's in those three paragraphs, graphics, beautiful, controls, awkward at first, gets easier later in the game, assassinations, are every once in awhile, but fun when you get to them. I'd give this game a need-to-rent, not a buy. The lack of replay value I found in this game was rather disappointing, but the storyline and the game itself are just something you HAVE to experience.

Hopefully my review was through enough, and, enjoy the game when you play it.

I played it over at a friend's who bought it. He's really very obsessed with it and I can see why. Just watching it it seemed pretty straight forward but, like you said, the controls can become a little overwhelming at first. Once I got used to them it's a very, very fun game. I didn't beat it, or even get very far, so I can't comment on the replay value or how easy the combat becomes but it felt like I could play for hours. One thing I didn't like was how many civilians needed to be rescued. It's almost a waste of time walking through a city and trying to save every one.

Either way, it's an awesome game and I'll definitely rent it. Probably won't buy it though, seeing as I doubt it'd take more than a week to beat.

.

That's exactly what I thought when I read a review in a magazine. Probably will give it a rental then.

When I first got this, I was like:" This game's so frickin awesome!" But it got way too repatitive. Find assassination target, assassinate, go to back to the bureau and repeat several times. The storyline is kinda lame but I think I actually learnt some stuff after playing this game. Killing ain't all that hard either, pressing a button twice will just kill someone. The most guards you have to kill at one time is around 5 unless you're dumb enough to go around attracting more guards.

There should be a multiplayer mode or something. 4/5.

Well I liked the game, but I think I built up my expectations too high. The game is great, and the story is incorporated well, but the controls threw me off a little bit. It seemed to get a little boring to me as well, seemed like I was more or less doing the same things over and over again. I agree with the original post that says it's a rent, not a buy.

I liked this game a lot, but found it a bit short. The graphics are astounding though.

a bit OT: Do people still actually rent games? Why? Is it cheaper than a virgin DVD?

Pretty much hit it on the nose, though I didn't find the controls too hard at all. In fact, I found them very simple. But I actually ended up selling this game a day or two after I beat it because I really was only playing it for the story. That, and I only paid $40 and made a profit by selling it to someone. I am not too sure if I want to buy the sequel though, hopefully they will give it some variety for the future. 4/5

It's a great game, and I actually applaud the controls. They're subtle, but it's much more effective than most games. Instead of assigning every little action to another button, AC instead takes the smart route and uses the face buttons for general actions and body parts. Y, for example, is your head, whereas X would be your weapon hand, B your open hand (for pushing or grabbing) and A your legs. It's a lot more of a "what do you want to do" than a "how do you want to do it", giving you control over things that matter and streamlining things that don't.

Yahtzee got it pretty spot on. (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/zeropunctuation/2694-Zero-Punctuation-Assassin-s-Creed)

So I've played through it, and the game is fun when you get to the assassinations or any story related events. Aside from that it does get repetitive with doing the same informational tasks over and over again, amongst other things. Still, the scenery, environment, and free choice to progress the game almost any way you want make up for those 'bad' aspects and still provide a good game.

It's fun, and I have high hopes for the two remaining games that are supposedly to be released in this series.

It's so fucking hard.

There'd better be a sequel.

This is game is awesome. My friend once went around town killing civilians for no reason, until there was this huge pile of bodies- and people were just walking around like the ground wasn't covered with corpses!

Oh, there will definitely be a sequel. They left it so widely open that to not have one would be insane!

Yeah, they've even announced that they plan to make Assassin's Creed a trilogy. Whether or not they follow through is a different story, but, nonetheless, the idea is still there.

I'm half way though and sick to death of it. I'll load it into my console after a 2 month hiatus, run around for 10 minutes trying to get used to the controls, do a pointless mission (such as eaves drop which is nothing more than find a close bench, sit down and press Y). Then I'll realised that if I continue to play the game I'll just be doing the same all over again. After the first two assassinations its a whole Deja Vu trip.

I'm gonna try the one for Nintendo DS because I don't have 360 or PS3...yet(maybe)

I liked the game and its quite interesting, but the repetitiveness gets a bit boring after a while. After my third assasination during the escape I just ran into like 15 guards just for the fun of killing them all, they make it kinda easy since only 5 will attack you at a time, the others just wait for you to kill one and come in to the fight.

The graphics are amazing. The assassinations and game play are equally just as good. But it just feels like you're doing the same thing over and over. It does tend to get a bit tedious. Ive had it since Christmas and am only halfway through.

If anyone is interested in beating the game 100% and you need flag and templar locations then visit this site.

Interactive maps with pics of each location! (http://www.assassinscreed-maps.com/)

Just thought I'd help some people out. It helped me quite a bit. Found all the flags in Masyaf with that in just 20 minutes.

Absolutely love this game. Played through 95% of it in less than a week. So emersive, actually studying and finding things out about your target, not just "go in and kill him". And the combat rocks; nothing like fighting 20 guards at once...

And as said in the first post, yes, the graphics are gorgeous. Nevermind the achievement and synchronization, I climbed all the viewpoints just for the view. Breathtaking... mmmmm.

I really liked it, I haven't played in a while since I beat it. And to agree with everyone else, I think it's too repetitive. And fighting is too easy, I'd repeatedly go and fight all the enemies in the Kingdom Guard camp, just outside of Acre. I'm also looking forward to a sequel and hope that it sheds some light on the plot outside of the Animus. And I managed to get into a locked room, but all there is a password protected computer. Does anyone know how to access this? As well as the one near the Animus, not the one attached to it.

Dresden

for the computer on the desk... there are times when Desmond is about to go into the Animus that the male doctor/scientist is facing away, kinda staring off and thinking. His password pen thingy is sticking out of his pocket; if you walk up behind him you can nab it, and then access the computer the next time you're alone.

Yay, thanks. I'll be sure to do that next time, and this also puzzles me. Why does a former assassin allow himself to stay in holding from a female and a feeble old man? He obviously doesn't like being tested on, but just takes it anyway.

Dresden

Well, if I remember correctly, he never was actually an assassin. He ALMOST was. Then he ran away. Either way, maybe he's just curious about Altair. I know I'd be pretty interested in an inside look at the Crusades, and the ability to be a badassassin (like that play-on words? lol)

I guess, I sure would love to re-live the memory of my ancestors where I'm casually strolling along the dock, and then a drunken hooligan pushes me in the water and I drown. Because, I can jump from rooftop to rooftop, slaughter endless masses of enemies, but I can't swim. But after I drown I just re-load the memory again, so it's okay.

Dresden
01-23-2008, 10:49 PM
Yeah, that pissed me off too. Both points you made: the drunken hooligans (god i wanted to kill every one of those fuckers that pushed me around) and the fact that the acrobatic-genius assassin can't swim...

A lot of people say that they should have made an online mode, however I think that it wouldn't be fun or challenging because of how easy it is to win a duel.

Also what do you guys think about a multiplayer co-op?

Dresden
01-24-2008, 1:04 AM
i think co-op would be nifty, however, full online with lots of people would absolutely ruin it.

There are very few games where co-op play WOULDN'T work, in my opinion

BUTT SLUT
01-24-2008, 5:14 AM
I think online and multi player doesn't suit it, the main feature of the game is the assassin's storyline. And online wouldn't suit that. All that would really happen online is some dueling, maybe some mini-games, like the Assassin informant's flag collecting task. And maybe some other little games that you can play online against others. But since that's all that they could really do, I don't think they would, or could make an Online or multi player.

If done the same was a Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, then yes, it would be very good

I've been playing the game game recently, and it's fun, but sometimes it can get really dull and just repetitive. Like, every time I want to get to a new city, I have to save a citizen and hide with Scholars. And even though people put down the games Sci-Fi background, I actually think it's pretty interesting. Sure, I probably don't understand ANY of it, but it's cool to see what they're actually looking for or what the bigger picture is.

With it's beatifulness, pretty good fighting style, and leaps of faith.. I rate it a 6.5/10
