I my self own an old school Ipod Mini (4GB), and it's starting to die =(. For Christmas I'm planning to get one, but still wondering which one to get. I was thinking the Ipod Touch. What I want to know about it is that do you need a plan to connect to the internet with it, or is it Lan or what.

About memory, I have around 1300 songs (mostly from cd's), which is around 3.5 gb so I don't mind too much about the memory space.

So pretty much it's the Ipod Nano vs. Ipod Touch. Thanks!!

4 GB Ipod Nano.

Unless you're really really interested in the Touch's features.

Yeah, I have a 4GB ipod mini as well. I'm thinking of getting the old school video. 60GB, etc.

I had a 6 gb mini, but I bought a 30 gb video, THE DAY BEFORE the classics came out. They wouldn't let me trade it so I kept it.

Just save a little, get a classic, and be happy.

Edit: I didn't know you could now delete double posts. I never double post so huh..

Get the new Ipod Nano. Why? Cause I have one and I like it.

Just get one that will fulfill your needs and will last you, no need getting anything more.

The Nano, unless you really want to pay double for the touch screen and internet access (it's wifi by the way, so you need a wireless router or to be in a hotspot like Starbucks.)

Whatever you do, no NOT get touch. You want to be able to skip a music with the thing in your pocket, and not have to stare at the screen every time. The "look, no buttons!" novelty wears off very, very fast.
Oh and don't get the video one. You'll never watch anything on it, since the screen is so ridiculously small, and it's much heavier.
Nanos don't break if you drop them.

Touch:
For watching videos, the 3.5" screen is better than nano's 2".
If you're afraid of buttons...yeah.
The web access could be handy if you don't have a computer around.

Nano:
Smaller, usually easier to carry around.
They come in pretty colours.
They're less expensive and still have video.
Probably more durable.

I have last years green nano. I'd really love to have the new one with video, and the bigger screen. I think the battery life is better too. Video may be small, but it's really nice to have while traveling.

E: Depends whether you think video and web are more important than music.

Ya know I had this same problem when I was looking at iPods. Do I want the extreme 60 gig one or the 30 gig or just a cheaper one.

I got the 30 gig and now it's filled. It's freaking awesome. I suggest that.

Chef.
12-01-2007, 11:34 PM
I use a fourth gen, 20 gig, holds all my music. Hell, theres no point in watching video on an iPod, the only time I use it is when I'm working out, or doing work, which means I'm not going to watch a video on a small ass screen. Who cares about color? Find an old, cheap one, that holds your music, like your old one, instead of a flashy 200$ iPod

I don't own an iPod, but I'll tell you now - don't get one just for videos. If it has some other feature that you absolutely must have, fine, but don't get it for video capability. The only time you'd be able to watch a movie is if you were waiting in a car or on a train or a plane or something, like on a long trip - and if you're gonna watch any videos then, you're better off with a portable DVD player anyway.

What I'm saying is; go with a Nano or whichever the best non-video one is.

Does it have to be an iPod?
I have an 8GB LG mp3 player and it works fine - plus I don't need to have iTunes installed and I can get tracks off another computer without losing everything I already had.

But I like those little Ipod Nanos. So tiny and so cute!

iPod Touch is unnecessary and costly. It has the same memory capacity as a Nano, but more expensive and with a gimmick that will wear off in a couple of weeks. In all cases, I'd say get a Nano.

And how the hell do you have 1.8k songs using only 3.5gigs of space? Are they like 1kbps or something?

Thank you so much for your info guys!!!

Well, if the touch is wifi, then Nano it is!! (I was thinking you can access the internet where ever you wanted to, like at school :christ:)

And about the number of songs I have, yes it only takes be around 3.5 gb. Almost all of my songs are CD bought (Heavy collector of CD's)

I don't get why people want to have 30 gigs worth of music to carry around unless you're a DJ. Where do you guys find the time to listen to three days worth of songs? I bet 20 gigs out of those 30 are listened to once then forgotten.
I have a 4 gig nano which is 3/4 full, and when I download something new I just take off stuff I'm not currently listening to and put the new album in. I don't need my HD in my ipod.

i would get the itouch just because I've never had a ipod before, and i want the wifi because my 14 year old life revolves around the internet.

Thats what I'm asking for Christmas, and if i don't get it I'm working up the money so i can buy it my self.

The touh feature seems ultra-lame. Nanos have never had enough memory for me anyway. I'd really recommend a Zune though. You can spring for the 4GB or 8GB if you're just wanting something small for music only. If you want videos and other cool shit, go for the 30GB or 80GB (You'll never use all of that!).

I'm getting an 80GB Zune. Lots of space is very, very useful if you're like me and listen to a lot of shit, and then you're very indecisive about what you want to listen to. Granted I'll never fill up 80GBs with just music. I'm also big into films, so I'll have a ton of movies and videos and shit on mine. It just seems great. Plus, it works like an external hard drive as well. Might aswell drop $50 more to be able to carry almost any computer program from place to place. A friend of mine keep WoW on his iPod and plays it from any computer he wants.

I still don't get it. 80 gigs is what, a week worth of music, playing 24/7?
I've a desktop and 2.0 USB, why do I need to actually carry around a heavier ipod?
Also, I'm not sure why anyone would watch videos on their Ipod. Get a notebook, dude. You know when you watch a movie on the theater instead of on the TV because it looks and sounds better? Watching something on ipod instead of TV or monitor is the opposite of that. God help you if it's not an American title and you need subtitles.

Doesn't anyone else think the Ipod Touch is like an iPhone except without internet and phone capabilities?

Also. Just go for a regular Ipod Classic. 30Gigs will do nicely. But 80 is just un-needed.

I find it crap that the Flash Drives are almost the same price as the 30Gig and 80Gig ones. Seems easier to go ahead and 10 times your capacity.

Basically the touch is the Iphone without the phone. And unless you are really intent on using the internet and checking emails on a touch screen, I\'d go with the nano. It\'s smaller so it can go anywhere and the new nano has just as much GB as the lowest GB touch has.

Videos don't mean shit for Zune. when I had mine you couldn't download any movies from the Zune Marketplace because they didn't have any to download. The only way you could sync movies onto your Zune when I had it was to download third party software(buy it, if you don't want a watermark on the screen throughout the movie), wait three hours for the video to be downloaded to the Zune-sync program and then put it on your Zune. It's probably 80% more hassle than it's worth.

I have an IPod classic (ie the 2nd newest generation before the Touch came out) It's 30gigs and I've had it for a year now. I absolutely love it. I couldn't use anything else, just because they don't have enough disk space. I occasionally use the video features, for car rides and the sort. I've watched entire movies on it before, and the quality wasn't even that bad.

If you're interested in something smaller; go for the nano.

I would recommend going for a 8GB Nano or a 30GB Classic, It's is really up to how rapidly you expend your music collection.
When I bought my 1st Gen 4GB Nano I had a bout 1GB of music on my computer, Now I have a bout 10GB music on my computer but I still use my 4GB Nano, I just sync it with the music I am currently listening to.
I wouldn;t recommend you to buy a 4GB Nano if you listen to all your music at the moment (Which you wrote - 3.5GB) because a 4GB is not really 4GB it's 3.7 GB that means only enough room for more 2-3 albums.

Unless you always expend your music collection I would recommend a 8GB Nano.

The new Nano is awesome, I have one. The touch looks like iPhone lite, but I don't know much about it. Looks like it wouldn't survive a fall, but I have dropped my Nano like 5 times already. I dropped it into snow a few days ago, still works fine. Not to mention, the video is nice, and the battery life seems to be pretty good.

Only complaint I have is that often, when you select a song in the 'artists' section, it selects the song under the one that you picked, and so you have to push back to get to the one you wanted.

I have an 80gb iPod Classic. Its about as slim as the original 30gb video was. I have about 60gb of music on it and I listen to almost all of it. My tastes vary from day to day. It's just convenient to have it all in one place rather than predict what music I will be in the mood for tomorrow. It was pretty cheap as well, about £169 ($300-ish).

I'm using it as an external harddrive, too. I think I've only used about 12 GB so far, so I expect to have this for a very, very long time.

I currently own one of the new Nanos. It's great and I love it. But the one thing that kinda sucks is the videos. It's because it can only hold, I think, 5 hours of videos. So basically, 2 movies and 1 show. That's really not worth it (unless it's Pulp Fiction.)

But music wise, it's great and incredibly handy because of its size.

I'd go for the new-gen Zunes out. I've got a 30 gig and its great but the new gens have that cool slide feature, play videos, sync music wirelessly and of course play music.Theres a new feature coming out so that next gen zunes can play xbox-made games that you can download off the internet and use the slide button feature with (if you're into that). I think they have the tiny 4, 8 ,and the bigger sized 80 gig ones out.

Sorry if you're an I-pod lover but the cool factor of I-pods are gone now. Zunes are sweet.

Because we buy mp3 players based on the "cool factor". I say "we" because I too have an old school ipod mini and have been thinking about getting a new one, my friend has zune and I, personally, think it sucks compared to the new Ipods. I'm thinking of upgrading and getting an Ipod classic or something similar, but still haven't made up my mind.

I'm typing this from my 16gb iPod touch right now. It's pretty much an iPhone without the phone, except mine's hacked so i can play NES, GBA, and even PSX ROMs/ISOs on it, and many other things (I'm no 1337 h4x0r, I've never hacked anything, I used a website for it).

Put this into perspective.

iPod Touch: What the fuck is it good for? Oh wow! Touch screen and a motion sensor and sooner or later some sort of platinum-expensive phone plan?! Oh and it only has 4gb and 8gb models. Fun. Whoopie. Fragile as a legless Ethiopian. 700 dollars... kthxbai.

iPod Nano: Solid, great shape, again only 4gb and 8gb models and again no touch screen or motion sensor but you have that little wheel to please all your finger fetishes. Oh and get this, it's 500 dollars cheaper! Oh and kids won't think you're spoiled.

And to conclude, all those screaming GET A CLASSIC! How about get some literary skills seeing as in his post, the TC'er clearly stated that he was debating between the Touch and Nano.

You pulled that information straight from your ass.

The iPod Touch doesn't have any cell phone capabilities. Hence why it's not called an iPhone.

It comes in 8, 16, and 32 GBs. I don't know where you got 4GB and 8Gb from.

700 dollars, are you fucking kidding?

I used to have a Creative Zen Touch, and when it broke I searched around for new mp3 players. The reason I decided on an iPod was the sound quality. From what I experienced (which, granted, was only maybe a minute of music on each player) the iPod had both the latest Creative and the Zune beat with sound quality.
