View Full Version : What's the deal with this "Videogame Fanboy" thing?

Seriously, what the fuck?
Wii has Wii Sports. It has Mario games. It's targeted at young people, and it's reinvented the whole "point something at the screen" thing the older videogames failed at.
PS3 and Xbox360 are similar in that they have a large variety of games, some of them bloody, but both are aimed at older gamers.
Here's my question: when did people become so easily manipulated that companies actually succeeded in making them their cheerleaders? I see all these people yelling "Oh my god, PS3 owns! If you have a Wii, you should be lynched!" and vice versa.
They're not even alike for fuck's sakes, if you want to jump up and down and make your character move you get a Wii, if you want final fantasy and more adult-looking graphics you go for one of the other two.
By the way, the following are not words:
"boi"
"fanboi"
Spelling them wrong makes you as smart as the random mongoloids screaming "WTFROFLMAOBBQ!"
I've tried asking for advice on which system to get, but most of the answers I get are something like "Don't get X, it sucks and I hate the company that makes it and I wish they just would die!". Get a fucking life, they're videogames.
EDIT: Awesome, just got an example on this very thread! If you want to understand what kind of idiot I'm talking about, scroll down to TireVengeance's post.

To me, a fanboy is thus, a person who completely ignores everything BUT the thing he uses, "If its not microsoft its retarded!" is a microsoft fanboy, see? I'm sorta a "anti-sony" fan boy, I like all the systems but sony the least. I own a PSX but other than that nothing, I don't think I've even played a PS2/PS3/PSP.

My friends don't have any of these systems, they're all stupidly expensive in Brazil. A PS3 is something like US$2.000 and an Xbox360 like US$1.700. Wii's cheaper, but no matter which I get, it'll come from the US.
The problem is that since nobody around me has these, I can only resort to americans who actually own these systems. Unfortunately, the responses I get seem to be almost religious in their belief that "system X" is the messiah of all videogames.
At first it was mildly amusing, but most people in these forums seem to be intelligent. It pisses me off that every other post is some idiot spewing forth garbage about "AMAGAWD I love my videogame and it's, like, the only good one evuuuur!"
EDIT: I'm asking for advice because the last time I decided to go for the videogame that was currently on the spotlight, I brought over a N64.
So you understand my reluctance in just going ahead and buying a Wii, seeing how Nintendo has fucked me in the past.

I think you need to understand that every system has it's own pros and cons. Not every American can afford to buy every console available, so when given the question of which is the best, they'll of course sway to the one they own, if they're satisfied.

Okay well, out of Xbox and PS3, I'd say go for the PS3. Xbox controls just seem weird to me. PlayStation games have generally been better too.
Wii is a whole different story, and it depends on what sort of game you want.
Nintendo has always been fun and good to play with other people.

I hate the fanboy-ism that splits video game fans into three seperate categories. I just recently bought an Xbox 360, and I'd own a PS3 too if I was made of money.. I wouldn't own a Wii, but not because I "omg wtf hate nintneod!11!!", I simply don't like the Wii. I played it at my friend's house and didn't really get in to it.

I totally agree with this. If I had my choice I would own a PS3 and a Wii. The problem is that the PS3 is so damn expensive. I am a "nitendo fanboy" only because of their great value. Nintendo has always been one of the lower priced models in most console wars and you get a great value. The Wii is fun and really isn't too bad for the price, plus the games are all very replayable. Even though I'm absolutely satisfied with my Wii, I would play a PS3 or Xbox 360 if given the option.

I can't choose which is better PS3 or Xbox 360, they are both similar except ones more expensive with slightly better graphics and 'blue-ray'.. What the fuck is blue-ray anyway, it plays DVD's better than other consoles?? I am a nintendo fanboy, but im not anti-sony + microsoft.. Xbox has some awesome games halo2, fable, and a few others i forgot the names of.. Playstation has grand theft auto 4 coming and i must admit it looks awesome. But all in all the wii has that interaction in gameplay which no other console can give, like wii sports, some people are retards and think if they do it their way it will work.. well it wont..... And I'm sure any wii user has had to tell their friends to calm down with their aggravation swinging the controller.. well whatever... get a wii, its cheaper, has better games, more playback with the games and has a more enjoyable time!!! its either that or better graphics and 'blue-ray'

I like Nintendo the best, but Sony comes a close second.

Which console is the best? Opinion really. I own a 360 so I know first hand its pros and cons, I don't own a PS3 but know it looks like a printer and its main selling point is a 500 dollar blu-ray player, Wii? Wii isn't even competeing, it doesn't have to. Nintendo has never cared about getting teh best graphics, its all about getting the best games, teh Wii is the most affordable, the smallest, the most fun right off the bat (plays the old GC games plus the really old nintendo games you can download) most intuitive controls (they do this with nearly every console) only thing it lacks, is graphics, but they are pretty good for me. I buy consoles for teh games I want, I don't buy consoles because "OO thes ones the bestest!", if Halo was sony I'd own the PS2/PS3 instead of the 360, doesn't matter ot me what system I'm using, what matters is the game. I bought a xbox for Halo, I bought a 360 for Halo 3, I am going to buy a wii for Super Smash Bros: Brawl.

If I was a fanboy of any of them, I'd say nintendo. I've owned the super nintendo, the N64, and the game cube. Nintendo has had amazing games and is always the first with new amazing controls. They introduced the cross pad, the joystick, bumpers, motion sensing and I think even triggers (which they took from Dreamcast which they beat out during that console war) Their only problem is their unwillingness to get a good online setup.

I work selling consoles and games etc. I'd say avoid the XBox 360, it's got a relatively small selection of games, if anything goes wrong Microsoft don't want to know you, and it quite simply isn't worth the price tag.

Having said that the PS3 is also madly overpriced, but it's heading towards having a far superior range of games, and graphics, and the customer support actually works, always a pro! In the end though its your own opinion that matter, go to a shop and check them out, see what offers you can get, and what games are available, make your decision from their.

The Wii is good too, the interactive thing is a nice point, but it's not really a console for serious games.

We all just like to make ourselves feel better. No one wants to hear the bad things about the console they just spent at least $250 on. Thus people start in on pointing out every single bad thing about every other console while talking about everything good their's has. Take the original Xbox vs. PS2 war. Xbox fanboys screamed how their console had better graphics, more mature games (OMG IT'S RATED M THAT MEANS IT'S AWESOME) and was ultimately superior. PS2 fanboys screamed how their console had a better library of games (Final Fantasy, God of War, etc.). Fanboys of both consoles made fun of Nintendo owners because they had "childish" games and poor graphics.

It's never going to stop. As long as multiple consoles are out on the market fanboys are going to argue over which piece of hardware they just spent half their paycheck on is superior.

Yeah, there are alot of people out there who think Nintendo is like the second coming of Christ. The internet comes out with some crazy shit though, sometimes. Sony and Microsoft don't really make games. There's plenty of companies owned by them, but I don't think they're directly responsible for what you're playing. They're not run by just one guy either, it's like a hundred people making these big decisions. Some people just refuse to accept that gaming's an actual business, and it's a pretty fucking big one at that.

I think the best way to lay this out is; Nintendo does have some childish games. I think it's aimed at people younger than me, to be honest. It's the cheapest one if you absolutely must buy a this-gen console, but you're gonna be feeling left out when you see some of the 360 and PS3 games.
Speaking of which, PS3 is insanely expensive, and there's not alot of games. It has potential to be an instant buy, but nobody's really making anything pants-wettingly awesome. So if you're serious about playing games all the time, put in the money and buy a 360. It's the most popular console, there's alot of games and you can download XBox Live Arcade games, which are pretty cool aswell. If you love action games with alot of atmosphere and weird stuff getting shot, go for Xbox.

That's my total unbias opinion, but I own a Wii. So take it however you will.

Microsoft does indeed make games-Age of Empires comes to mind.
My problem with all 3 are the following:
Wii's graphics look a lot like updated N64 graphics. This makes me afraid. I stood by Nintendo while they released crappier and crappier games for the N64 and my friends played a hundred awesome RPG's on their playstations, then caved and bought one.
Xbox360 is made by Microsoft. While I don't agree that Microsoft is the root of all evil and the eventual summoner of Ctulhu, they are sneaky, and I've heard they released a whole bunch of 360's with a flaw they won't comment on (something about 3 red lights of death). That spells "we don't care" to me.
PS3 is expensive as hell, and the fact that it used bluray makes me nervous. I've heard a blank bluray disk goes for like US$50, so I wonder how expensive the games could be.
I'm not made of money so I'd like to be able to torrent up games and just burn them. What kind of media does the 360 use?

08-23-2007, 6:14 PM
Actually yeah, I was skeptical about that- Microsoft've been making PC games for ages though. So they're different. I'm talking about when people think all games on a console come from the console developers.

Anyway, if you do get 3 red rings, they'll refund you with a brand new XBox for free.

Microsoft is really good about the warranty thing, they realize they fucked up somewhere in the hardware side of things, and they're willing to makeup for their mistakes.

The reason I love my X360, is because I've never played a console more than I have this one. Usually, I play it for 3 months because two good games come out, and then it sits in the dust for 4 months until a good game comes out. X360 constantly has exciting exclusives, and intriguing games coming out, that you always have something to look forward to. Plus, with the whole online bit, it's like an entire new module of gameplay waiting to be explored with your buddies, or with people you'll never really meet. I play the multiplayer modes for a few weeks, and then we start expanding the bounds by glitching, or discovering eggs. It's really fun to do.

Another really fun thing with the X360, is the gamerscores and achievements. It's really fun going out of your way to chase unlockables for points to compete with your friends. You get a great feeling inside when you hear the little beeping sound as a popup comes telling you you've unlocked an achievement. It's initiative to play, and get involved with games more religiously. Plus, achievements for playing co-op encourage it more fluently.

I know PS3 has the medal system or something, which is supposed to be similar. My two problems with the PS3 are the price, and the lack of really interesting, groundbreaking, and exclusive games. Nothing really catches my eye as being worth $800 just to play for a month. And, I've always hated the way online works on Sony consoles. It's so uninvolved and not community-like. Sure, it's free, but paying $50 a year for top-quality Live sure beats it.

you've pretty much hit the nail on the head with your intro topic. Each system comes with its pro's and con's. I personally prefer the Playstation because of the range of games you get, from RPG to FPS to Guitar Hero and the like. However, a friend of mine owns a 360, and those have some really good action / adventure, and FPS games. As for MMO's, the main one I believe is the Morrowind games. I haven't really ever used a Wii, so I can't comment on that.

I'm partial to each one, and I would love to own them all, but the way I see it is like this:

360: mainly for FPS, run and gun, racing, and some decent action/adventure games. Not big on RPG fans.

PS3: RPG fans will like this, many good action adventure games, racing, and some good FPS, Has a wider selection, but not as many big titles.

Wii: more family oriented, and a great gift for less experienced or serious gamers. FPS not really welcome, but action/adventure is the key here.

I'll probably end up with a 360 and after I get enough money a PS3 as well. 360 games are fun, but I like to be able to play a game for a longer time, and halo is the only real game with an excellent replay value that wasn't an RPG.

That's the one thing I am very much sick of hearing.
I'm 15, and got my first console when I was 4. It was a Sega. I then had a PSX + 64. Then I had a Gamecube + PS2. THEN I got a Wii.

I've gamed for majority of my life, and I'm a pretty serious gamer. A lot of my friends own Nintendo Wii, and they are serious gamers.

Addressing the family oriented aspect, how do you explain games like Resident Evil 4? It's violent and bloody. (Don't say, "omg it's a re-release newai" cause that's not even my point)

And I think it serves better as a FPS console, cause you can point where you want to shoot, instead of practicing endlessly to be able to gauge how far you have to tilt the analogue stick. Games like Wii Sports and Wii Play aren't representing what games on Wii are going to be like, kiddy wise. It's merely showing how the controls work, and HOW to use the controls.

P.S: I'm not a Nintendo Fanboy. I also plan on getting a X360. I would've got a PS3 instead of 360, as I've always owned Sony, but it's too damn expensive.

Yeah but MOST of the games are family-oriented. As in- like 8 out of 10 Wii games are advertised with a big fake family on a couch playing it. There's no way of getting around the fact that there are better consoles for people who call themselves Gamers.
It is good for first-person-shooters BUT there aren't any first-person-shooters for it yet. So it's not good for FPSs.

Metroid Prime 3 apparently plays beautifully on the Wii.

I'd say that, arguably, the Wii is probably the most flexible gaming system. However, it's uses of online gaming and it's game release dates are something to be tested. I'm hoping that this December and the few months after it isn't a game-drain season ala Gamecube.

Hate to break it to you mate, but the wii is family orientated. Hell, most of the Wii's own advertising campaigns show little old ladies and a bunch of kids having a ball on some of the wii's countless minigame titles.

I see where you are coming from, but lets be honest here, with the highlighted titles coming out for the wii being things like the new Mario game, Mario party and mario & sonic at the olympic games, you can't help but see the connection.

In my opinion, what lets the wii down is it's software library. Because nearly every piece of software that is released for the console, is all based around the wii-mote. So instead of games coming out with interesting stories and unique ideas with creative characters. You get bucket-loads of games that are built from the ground up for the mote, containing countless minigames and thousands of different uses to wack that mote around as hard as you can.

To sum it up in short, the wii and nearly everything about it is Gimmicks, gimmicks and more gimmicks. Sure it has it's Call of Duty and Resident evil. But so does every other console (Not to mention on every other console they play, look and sound a whole lot better), and in a sea of games like Wii Sports, Action Girlz Racing & Alvin and the Chipmunks, the "hardcore" games make up the minority.

I'd sell my Wii right now if it weren't for Mario Galaxy.
That damn thing is useless. Not only does it have no games, but when I can play the 360 on my widescreen monitor in (sort of) HD I don't have any desire to go play gamecube on a blurry tv.
Also the Wiimote, I hate to say, is stupid.
Now instead of pushing buttons to perform an action, I can waggle the remote.
Yay.
Metroid Prime 3 will probably be the first game to not use the wiimote in a gimmicky and unresponsive way (which comes out today, I think?).

I can't stand these fanboys. I got a friend who has a PS3 and defends the hell out of it when someone criticizes him for buying one or how X-Box 360 or Wii is superior than it. He pretty much "swings his nuts" around any pro-PS3 related announcements or whatever and scoffs at other consoles.

Meanwhile, I own a Nintendo Wii, but I don't shove down people's throats why Wii is so great or why their other consoles suck. I would only tell them that I've been a video game player for over 15 years and manage to pick the winner every time. If they disagree with it, I don't go into a tangible debate and try to convince him why Wii is better. If they're happy with what they got, so be it.

Super smash was good. I finished goldeneye in a week and never played it again. Mario party felt like playing "life" on a video game with no other people.
I'm not sure what's this "bunch of others" you're talking about. I've seriously played around 50 excellent rpg's on the psx, plus some pretty good strategy, adventures and shooters. I've played like 8 or 9 good games on the N64, and as RPG's go, and I love me a good RPG, I had both zeldas, and THAT WAS IT.
Two RPG's was all N64 had. Oh, I also has Quest 64, which made me want to jab a fork in my eye every time I played it.

I have a 360, a Wii, and if I had $350 (they're REALLY cheap in my town) I would have a PS3! But when it comes down to it, I saw a video a while back comparing 360 and PS3 and it pretty much summed it up. PS3 has a whole bunch of tacked on features to make you want to buy the console. Sure, it has great games coming out for it, and I seriously considered trading in my Wii to get money towards a PS3 at one point. But I am never going to buy a blu-ray movie, listen to music, or look at pictures on my PS3.

I am really glad I have a 360, and I am looking forward to Halo3, Halo Wars, DOA5, Mass Effect, Force Unleashed, and many more. I am also glad I have a Wii, and I look forward to Metroid, SSBB, and SMG. I also want a PS3, for games such as Motorstorm, NGS, and a few others. But when it comes down to it, I would have to say my favorite console is the 360. It has plenty of games NOW, Microsoft stands behind it, and XBL is arguably the best feature of any console.

But then again, it's all personal preference, and you could say that the 360 sucks, and I won't mind. But when I'm playing XBL and your missing out because of a petty hate of MS, I'll be having the last laugh.

I see where YOU'RE coming from... But I think the Wii is more EVERYONE oriented.
Besides, which console had the barbie horse racing and Bratz Rock Angels?

As stated, I do like the Xbox 360, and the PS3 is alright... It's just too damn expensive. The Wiimote can get a tad annoying, but that's why they're providing compatibility with Gamecube Controllers for games such as Super Smash Bros Brawl.

Plus the graphics never really bothered me. I'd whinge if the graphics were fuckin ugly, but it's more about how the game is played... Final Fantasy X was a beautiful game, but it just bored the hell out of me. Super Smash Bros Melee was average graphics, but it was fun as.

Edit: It's pretty much just opinion, really... But I wouldn't trade it in for anything else.
