View Full Version : Gaming "Easter Eggs"

So I'm currently on a second playthrough of Hitman: Blood Money after re-installing it.

I started the tutorial mission (the theme park one), completed it and moved to the "Newspaper" bit after a mission is completed. I decided to read the whole thing for once and stumbled across this:

http://img105.imagevenue.com/loc906/th_25856_Himan_and_Kane_and_Lynch_122_906lo.jpg (http://img105.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=25856_Himan_and_Kane_and_Lynch_122_9 06lo.jpg)

It's funny because this is the exact storyline of Kane and Lynch and those are the character names and Eidos made it! Ho ho!

Anyway just something fun I wanted to share.

What other game "easter eggs" have you guys come across?

There's that one in Doom where you idclip into some wall on the last level and end up in a room where you can see one of the programmer's head impaled on a spike surrounded by blood.

Thanks, I was quite excited. It's always really fun finding stuff like this in games, I love it. WoW is a really good game for that, they have tonnes of references and easter eggs in it. Not that I ever played WoW >_>

On the cover of Kane and Lynch: Special edition there is an artistic picture of the Bank level. In the background is a stand with a poster that says:
"Is Death Sneaking Up On You?
*Picture of Agent47*
Check 101.DK (?) For Insurance Quotes"

Also in Kane and Lynch on the actual Bank Level, if you play as Lynch in Co-op, when he starts shooting all of the hostages one of the police outsides head is literally replaced with a Pig Head

The best place to find all of this sort of stuff is on www.eeggs.com

The "Check 101.DK" I'm not sure what means.

I think it could be a monetary unit and currency seeing as the Danish currency is called Danske Kroner but that's written as DKr and not DK, so it's probably not money. The internet ending for Denmark is .dk so it might be a website.

I've found a couple in Hellgate: London. There are some NPCs that, although not really hidden, reference stuff.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b259/Matterialize/hgl-stewart.pnghttp://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b259/Matterialize/hgl-joanne.png

The first one is Patrick Stewart, a.k.a. Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek. He's wearing Starfleet colours, he's bald, and of course he has the same name. In the game, talking to him reveals how he received an artificial heart after losing his real one in a fight with some demons, just like Picard (except with aliens). :nerd:

The second one is J.K. Rowling. Although her hair and skin colours are different, in the game she talks about all these stories she's written (which are oddly similar to the Harry Potter novels) and is complaining about how she's lost her little pet imp, named Dobbers or something.

I haven't beaten the game yet, so there might be more I haven't come across.

Ratchet and Clank 2's Insomniac Museum.

There's this planet that has a part about half way through it with a fork in the road. If you kill all the enemies at this part and wait till 3am (actually playing the game at 3O'clock in the morning) A bell tower will chime. At this point you have to stand ontop of some water fountain and it'll turn into a teleporter that sends you to another planet with the Insomniacs Museum. Inside is all the shit they didn't use in the game, like bosses and weapons, enemies and vehicles. You can also walk about and listen to the developers talking about random stuff they never included while making the game.

There's even easter eggs inside the museum. It's top.

More Kane and Lynch, there are 47 Achievements, and an achievement for 47 headshots, an online map that has a shop called "Mr. 47's Dresser" or something like that (3 references to hitman). Also a level called "Freedom Fighters", Eidos have released a game under that title.

In Halo 3, on the level where you are in the base and all hell breaks loose, there is a door you can get to with a marine on one side yelling to the other. They are the voices from Red vs Blue and it's quite the humorous exchange.

In Warcraft 3, if you click on a wandering animal enough times, it explodes.

Also, if you use the Fog of War cheat in the Prologue, you can see an island in the corner with a few pirates on it and an item labeled "Phat Lewt"

More to come.

There are actually similar but different sequences for each difficulty of that.

I'm surprised Portal's the cake is a lie hasn't been mentioned. Or is that even considered an easter egg?

Pretty much the same thing happens in the third game. There's a planet with a bunch of roms that have balconies that you can go up to, one of them has a teleporter that says that it isn't working, but to come back later. If you go to it at 3 it takes you to the museum that has all sorts of crazy stuff, even lets you go on a race track they designed but didn't have enough time to put in the game.

In Everquest there is a city called Qeynos. Everquest was originally created by a company named Verrent, which pretty much gives away that this easter egg wasn't intentional, but Verrent eventually sold Everquest to Sony. Qeynos=SonyEQ backwards.

Also, there is a kid in Hellgate: London who has a mechanical leg (referance to Wirt from Diablo 1).

In Golden Eye 64. On the first level when you pick up the sniper rifle and you press i think a 3 times consecutively(Maybe you do it another way but I did it like 6 years ago). You get a paintbrush that you can use to hit people with.

I believe there are multiple ways to get it because this guy did it a different way.

Theres an easier way. On the same planet theres a grinding sequence, and when you get to the third rail where you have to dodge the electrical discharge from transistors, run right into one of the transistors, and use the jetpack to fly to the bit of land you see to the left (it shows up on the map as grey, unreachable land). Go to the only building on this land, and walk around on it, till you fall through the floor, go to the center, and jump up, you sill have to fight the 4 waves of enemies though.

Also, in Ratchet and Clank 1, if you go to the lady that lets you enter the first hoverboard race and start doing sideflips in front of her, her breasts get bigger and bigger. You can get them back to normal by crounching below her breasts.

On terms of Fable, when you need to hit the talking rocks to open the Demon Door, in stead of Spelling out "H-I-T-S", hit in the the order of "S-H-I-T" and the game swears at you, then you get attacked by wolves.

Morrowind for PC possibly has the largest collection of easter eggs I have come across.
1. There is a place called Marrowaks Spine (Poke'mon)
2. There is a place called Weepinbell Hall (Poke'mon also)
3. There is a cactus named Marty who talks
4. There is a character called Mai'q the Liar who tells funny lies
5. There is a tomb with the body of Indiana Jones in it
6. There is a body of a dead argonian (lizard man thing) who's name is Pop Jeh, which is a reference to one of the producers of the game

In The Secret of Monkey Island, when Guybrush finds himself underwater, if you do not escape in 10 minutes, the length of time Guybrush can hold his breath, he dies. Another "death" occurs in the game is when you happen to come across a "rubber tree", you fall off the edge of the cliff. A restart/quit menu comes up, only to be interrupted by Guybrush flying back into the air due to the rubber tree's bouncy qualities.

One last Monkey Island one, Guybrush's trainer, who teaches him how to fight and what not, is named Cort, a reference to The Dark Tower by Stephen King. The names are the same, along with the scarred face and mangled body.

In World of Warcraft, there are billions of reference. However, there is a quest where you help a gnome named Tyrion, along with a bunch of Alliance NPCs called The Dark Watch, if I do recall. These are both references to the George R.R. Martin series "A Song of Ice and Fire"

There are SO many in the Elder Scroll games. In Morrowind, Divath Fyr is the hero of Daggerfall (TES:2), because he has the amulet you get near the end of the game AND he was talking about events and how he was a hero and stuff. There's also a plant in Jabasha's Rare Books in Vivec named 'Charles the Plant'. Like someone posted above, there's ALOT of Pokemon references, like the dead adventurer whose name is 'Peke Atchoo'

In Oblivion, there's a statue of Clavicus Vile and his dog Burba (spelled something like that), and on the statue, in Daedric, is the phrase 'A Scamp Who Dealt With Orcs', which is referring to Creeper, the lovable merchant scamp who sold his wares in a Orc mansion in Morrowind. The Boots of Springheel Jack are also part of a quest with a man named 'Jackben Imble', who lives in the Imperial City Elven District. :facts:

What?

I've discovered several Easter Eggs in Portal, most of which involve getting stuck. But in one instance in one of the early test chambers, you can make clever use of the two storage cubes and with some tricky crouch-jumps or duck jumps you can place one on top of the other and get to the end of the level, and GLADoS speaks "You're not a good person, you know" which should have only been played nearer the end. I was chuffed with finding that.

Also in my noclip advantues, in one of the late test chambers, where you elarn the double fling, there is a half completed unused part of the map. Very strange.

Theres also the aperture science website which holds many trinkets.

In Half Life 2, it's not exactly an easter egg, but noclip is fun, especially during sequences with People on screen. You can learn a bit more than you should by taking a peek at these during episode one and two.

Also at the beginning of half life 2 if noclip out of the train, you can find a re-rendered version of the test chamber from the biginning of half life one, and a few other things, and you can kill breen, preventing any further announcements about city 17 until the next load, which is amusing..

Oh and in Manchester, in the UK, theres an easter egg, look:

Yes I admit I'm a HL2 nerd. (http://www.coachbarrow.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/Manchester_shopping_Sept_2006_004.jpg)

There's an easter egg in Half Life 2: Episode 2.
After meeting with the Vort in the White Forest Base there's a little gap in the wall.
Look in and what do you find? A lovely little easter egg is what!
... The Lost station. With a Dharma/White Forest logo. Nothing much.

Also: Halo: Combat Evolved there's another grunt on the last level saying how hungry he is... etc etc.
Uhmm... Not sure about much else. I know I've seen like a million but cant think of them.

In God Hand for PS2, there's a miniboss early in the game called Mr. Gold and Mr. Silver. They're essentially two incredibly gay old guys who dance around in skimpy costumes and try to butt-bounce you. Now, in God Hand you have a move called the "Ball Buster," which does exactly what you think it does. however, it doesn't work on Mr. Silver for some reason.

If you examine his body after defeating him, the main character will say, "Looks like he's not packing any heat. He must've lost his balls in the war."

Best goddamm game ever.

In the game Portal, if you look carefully at the random text and gibberish scrolling on computer screens, you'll notice hidden in it all the recipe for Cake. Yep.

Morrowind of course had so many Easter Eggs. M'aiq the Liar. Eltonbrand. The Fat Lute. The whole quest for the Spear of Bitter Mercy (ok, not an easter egg, but still frickin' weird).

Halo 3. Not easter eggs per say, but nobody that's not a Firefly fan would catch them. Nathan Fillion (Malcolm Reynolds) voiced one of the sergeants, and the character was even named Sergeant Reynolds. There are several other Firefly references made at times if you listen closely, made by him, Alan Tudyk (Wash) and Adam Baldwin (Jayne) who also did marine voices.

Half-Life 2... how about every instance where it's possible to see the G-Man outside of scenes where he's talking to you? Like one in particular, when in Nova Prospekt, you can look at one of the security monitors and see him walk up to a window next to a closed door and look through it for a second.
