View Full Version : More potential for the Wii?

So in my constant time-killing YouTube surfing, I came across this video. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw) This guy has written up some software that uses the Wii-mote and sensor bar, in reverse, to do head tracking. What this means is that you mount the LED sensors from the sensor bar onto your head in some way, and using his software you have the ability to basically explore a virtual reality room. It takes no hacking and no modifying of anything Wii-related, except maybe a sensor bar, and it's really fucking cool. I think he says it best in the video, I'd really like to see some Wii games that come with a peripheral to properly use this. Imagine how fucking awesome it would be to play a shooter like this. You'd have to actually dodge melee attacks, for instance.
That is truly awesome. As this guy says, it's like the targets are coming out of the tv.
I hope to see some games using this technique soon.

Hah, awesome. The only issue I can see is that using the Wii remote as an infrared camera is a little ineffective, because its field of view is rather narrow (I remember the video with the modified sensor bar, and the guy mentions this). If the peripheral you mentioned was a more wide-angle camera, it'd work perfectly. Although still only for one person.

Wow that was pretty amazing.
If only Nintendo would fuck off doing sequels to games that worked 10 or 15 years ago they might be able to make a REAL revolution.
EDIT- Wow, all the videos from this guy are amazing. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5s5EvhHy7eQ)

I was talking to Assassin about this about an hour ago.. Imagine sometime in the future when someone's had the time and method to advance this further. If we're able to do this now, how far off is it really until we see a 360 degree circle of screens that allow for full immersion into a virtual reality world? The possibilities are quite literally endless.

Fuck me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0awjPUkBXOU&feature=related).
Can you imagine a FPS where you don't use a controller, but just make your hands INTO A GUN SHAPE? What the fuck, Nintendo? I don't want Sight Training, I want what that guy's doing!

It'll be funny if Wii tries to copy this guys idea and this guy sues them for a share.

Wow, this guy is amazing. He needs to be working at Nintendo.
P.S- On the head tracking video, watch 3:50 to 3:55. It made me cry with laughter.

If anyone Nintendo related sees this and DOESN'T instantly make it into a game then they are criminals in my eye. Also does his voice remind anyone of Kermit The Frog?
Wow, give him a job already. That man deserves one for coming up with this. Can you imagine the possibilities?
And to think, they have glasses out there that simulate TV/computer screens. Imagine combining the two.
Seriously, if the Wii were to do this, I would fucking buy one no matter what. The Wii would easily be the best selling FPS/RPG/Platformer/Action/Whatever console out there.

Utilizing the potential here is required. What you could do in the future is actually be in the game. And motion tracking of this degree could easily help start full immersion.

What is so incredible about this is that it requires minimal hardware. If people are willing to pay up to 90$ for guitar hero with a guitar think of how nintendo could package this and still be affordable. With the hardware available by buying an extra thing? you could potentially have a very effective product. One thing that worries me however is that you may have to walk around a room which may make a room have to adapt to be able to function with it. Still, amazing.
However, before this I want wii DVD. It has the hardware I want the software. Wii online store thingy download please.

Holy shit. I want to play a game based off of this. Right. Now.
Seriously, it's ridiculous that he's not rolling in money off of this shit. I want to play super smash brothers and ACTUALLY JUMP and DODGE and PUNCH and shit. Hell, this is amazing.

Knowing Nintendo, they wouldn't do anything considering this would cost them time and money, and would require new ideas for games, which they are incapable of.

Man if the Wii takes in these idea's..Gaming revolution. It will nearly one step away from virtual reality. Imagine it looking like bullets are flying past you in a matrix style game. Or you have to doge them. I really hope Nintendo take sin these idea's.

Are you fucking stupid? Nintendo are the ones that always come up with new ideas for games, it's Sony and Microsoft who just make the same game with better graphics and say look a new game! Like Halo 3, did they really make that many proper changes from Halo 2? No, they changed the multiplayer maps put in a crappy story mode and said look a new game! Urr no that's an old game that you remade.
That's frikkin sweet, 3D games on the horizon I guess?

:indiff: Yeah because that Nintendo Wii sure is a shitty old concept for video games. Duh Nintendo, there have been thousands of consoles that involve a motion-sensing controller.

Don't be stupid, Nintendo've been using the same characters and storylines in their games for decades. I'd take Halo 3 over Zelda 17 any day.

Yea, ive seen this video too, if the people at nintendo would only realise this potential they would become the lead console, the current leading console would most likely be the xbox360, but imagine games with 3d game play, and better body movements, e.g. ducking behind cover, looking into the game like real life. All of this is possible with this design.

I'm trying to imagine how Metroid Prime 3 would've been if it had head-tracking.
That guy is awesome AND now works for Microsoft. He is helping run one of the departments which is further developing this type of hardware/software.
Imagine this combined with stereoscopy by means of polarized 3d glasses.

Well i guess wii has lost its oppurtunity, looks like xbox will have this next, although wii would be the perfect console if it had this and better games

I thought I smelt retard in here, did someone say all Zelda games were the same as each other?
They are kinda right.
Zelda goes of a very basic story line every time. But unlike most other games does a fairly good job of changing it up.
Twilight Princess was a great change with the whole twilight realm and sacred beast stuff.
But Nintendo can avoid this whole argument by putting all their creative thinking into new characters.
Just look at the the SSB Brawl roster. The youngest character in that group is Olimar followed by the Pokemon group. And i can remember Pokemon since birth (probably an exaggeration).
They should look at extending their character range.
But all in all. Zelda would not be my choice for an example of unimaginative gameplay.
Halo is definitely more stale in ideas than Zelda.
