View Full Version : Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street
Genre: Musical/Horror/Comedy(IMO)

If you're the exact same person as me (few are), whenever you found out this film was being made, you said, "Jesus Christ! Why the fuck doesn't Tim Burton just marry Johnny Depp and shit? Their career is a symbiotic relationship! Fuck. I'd like to see a Sweeney Todd movie, but I think I'll avoid this one on principle."
Anyway, despite the fact that I said all of that, after a while I realized that there are few directors out there that I believe could pull off a Sweeney Todd movie, and Burton is one of those few. So I saw the movie.
To be perfectly honest, it's amazing. The feel of it is cold and sinister. The joy and delight of the meat-pie shop is a perfect counterpoint to the people killing and eating. (Which isn't really good on Burton. Stephen Sondheim is the great writer here.) But all together the movie is beautiful, wonderous, twisted, and everything else a Sweeney Todd movie should be. All of the actors do surprisingly well in their singing roles, despite the fact that only one or two of them have had musical training (Depp isn't one of them, yet shines above most).
All together, if you like musicals, it doesn't lack. It's pretty true to the actual Broadway musical (from what I'm told, since I've never actually seen it, I just know the story and shit), except for a few little details. Also, if you're not a fan of musicals and you like violence and blood, see this movie. The singing in this movie kind of works like Catholic Cathedral scenes and God references in mafia films. Plus, for some reason, it's hilarious.
I recommennnddddddddddd it.

Holy shit, Allen lives.
Is it only out in the US right now by the way?
Everybody did a great job in it. Helena Bonham Carter is awesome.

I wasn't expecting a musical :P I liked it enough, my girlfriend was disappointed, she thought it was going to be more horror than gore/song/comedy etc. I wish they explained more about what happened with the kids and isn't the girl his daughter?

I couldn't believe how great this movie was. Depp's acting, and Burton's visuals were top notch, though Sweeney's look and style was very reminiscent of Edward Scissor hands. My favorite part was when Depp and Carter were talking/singing about the passerbys on the street and who would be most delicious. Glad you wrote this Allen, I was gonna but it turns out i'm lazy.

I saw it on broadway in New York, it was amazing. If it ever comes here, I'm checking it out ASAP. If not, I'll look it up online. I am excited.

Its not out in England yet but I read on the BBFC website that its rated 18. Does that mean it's a graphic gore fest? I do hope so!

Absoloutely wanted to see thi movie more than anything else this year, but I freakin can't cause I'm not old enough! I've been pissed about that for days. The original theatrical trailer airing which only aired once said it was a TBC, so I had my fingers crossed that it would be a 15, but goddamn!
All in all, this movie looks fantastic. Eerie, gory and well-cast.
PS. I don't know why you're pissed about Johnny Depp being in all of Tim Burtons movies. I mean, I wouldn't pick anyone else for those parts either. Did you stop to think that Tim chooses Johnny not because they're bum-loving each other, but that he's right for the parts and they make a good team?
And Hickabod yes, it's gory as hell, and I feel the same way as you. Bring on the bloodshed! It gets released on I think the 14th here in England or something, actually that might be the advanced previews, but I just want it to go in and out of the cinemas so I can get it on DVD. ^_^

I sound like a whiny bitch, but the fact that Johnny Depp is in this movie is what makes me want to look away.
But with Helena Bonham Carter, how could I lose?! :D

Oh Johnny Depp does so much better than Carter. This movie was amazing. It doesn't really get gory until the second half of the movie though, but at that point some one dies nearly every scene. I recommend seeing it without reading up on the play if you haven't seen the play because there are some nice plot twists. *and yes, the girl is his daughter*

Comes out in England on the 25th of January. I can't say that I've seen any trailers yet, but I surpose thats for the best as I know I'd get pant wettingly excited. Just think, Sleepy Hollow!
Sleepy Hollow was actually an amazing movie. It's not that I hate Depp for always being in Burton movies. I actually love depp as an actor. he's amazing and hardly ever plays the same kind of role twice. He's shown amazing range. And I don't hate Burton. It's just a little rediculous that more Burton movies than not star Johnny Depp.
Really though, this movie surprised the hell out of me. I expected it to be pretty good, but I loved it. It's really rare for me to love a movie that's not an action film. Even rarer for me to love a musical. It just surprised the hell out of me with how well it was made, and how well Burton pulled it off.

I was really impressed by the visuals.
When Todd threw the chick in the furnace and it showed him all fiery and demonic it was incredibly badass. There were a lot of classic scenes like this just for the visual appeal.

When I first heard about this I had to go and see it because Tim Burton is my all time favorite director and I love almost all his movies. I thought Sweeney Todd was a let down. I expected it to be way better then it was. It was still good but I felt it was way too long. Thats probably just me because I have no attention span though.

If Burton made it any shorter it wouldn't have been true to the Broadway prodcution. He did it the best he possibly could. I can't see anyone pulling off a better version than this.
This has to be one of my favourite movies of all time. I saw it yesterday, and holy shit was I amazed. The visuals were spectacular, the acting was great, the singing was great, the script was great, Ms. Lovett was fucking hot, the twists fit in perfectly (and they were suprising). I was laughing maniacally through pretty much the whole thing. ESPECIALLY during the song where Mr. Todd is singing about Joanna, and just slitting throats. There was enough gore to satisfy my need, and enough drama/romance to satisfy my feminin side. cfkdsfuidu
4.5/5
ps.
HAVE I TOLD YOU MS. LOVETT WAS FUCKING HOT YET?

Helena Bonham Carter.
Great movie, except it wasn't original. Johnny Depp did a stellar job.
Helena Bonham Carter.
I know. Helena Bonham Carter's a babe, but she's particularly hot in this film.
I actually think I'm going to go see this movie again, it was simply fantastic.

I'm a HUGE Tim Burton fan and I can't wait to see this movie.
I guess Burton and Depp just work well together, because every other movie they've collaborated on has been fantastic. Very excited to watch it.

I'm not one for musicals, but after seeing the movie once i was kinda humming the songs, and a friends roommate gave me the soundtrack for FREE out of nowhere it's basically the movie minus fifteen minutes.

There's great singing in this movie, and I loved the story. It's not for everyone though; if you think musicals are dull and boring, then you may not enjoy it. However, it's got a nice style that captures the somber and gloomy mood of 19th Century London in each frame of the grimy alleyways as well as Todd's undying passion for revenge in every musical note. I liked it and give it 8/10.

My mom took me to go see that movie. She didn't tell me what movie we were seeing. But, when I saw what it was, I wasn't too excited because I thought it was going to be bad. I LOVED IT. Haha. Great movie. Burton is good at what he does. :]

Sweeney Todd was an amazing movie, with great songs, music and acting. My favorite character and song was Pirelli (Perelli?)'s when he sings while shaving ^^

Sweeny Todd was a cool movie, I especially liked the end. The songs were really catchy, but some of them were boring and went on too long. And yes, like everybody, my favorite character was Sasha Cohens.

I actually fell asleep during this movie.
Oh man, I loved this movie. Favourite part was definitely
Mrs. Lovett: You're barking mad! Killing a man what done ya no harm!
Sweeney Todd: He recognized me from the old days. Tried to blackmail me. Half me earnings.
Mrs. Lovett: Oh, well that's a different matter then. For a moment there I thought you lost your marbles.
or when he's singing to/about his razor whilst Lovett's singing to/about him.

I disagree Audio, I thought it was fantastic. We went to see it when it opened, and it was amazing and hilarious, especially when people left retching when Depp started slitting throats!
I agree sweeney todd was absolutely brilliant. Love the lyrics used in their songs. It was such a good movie and funnily enough based on a true story. Johhny depp singing when i heard that i was a bit iffy but after seeing it i changed my mind. Im used to thinkin of johhny depp as a pirate but after seeing this movie johhny depp is official a pirate barber.

Johnny Depp always seems to not look the same in every movie he does. In a good way, believe me.
Pirates of the Caribbean, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and now Sweeny Todd (etc.)
Find a pic of Willy Wonka and then compare it to Jack Sparrow.
It's amazing how Depp can bring a sinister, evil character such as Todd when you look at the other characters he has played.

Well, he did look different except for when he raised his razor and spoke to it. Then he sounded like a pirate, if a really badass pirate.
I really enjoyed this movie, and the soundtrack is simply wonderful. However, I rented the original, the one even before the play, and it was so poorly done it was funny. They closed the characters' mikes when they weren't talking and everything had a grainy quality. It was strange.

I mostly just decided to watch it because it had Johnny Depp in it, and because I liked the idea of the human meat pie-so dark and twisted. But by the end, I loved it-especially the irony at the end-in fact I loved the entire end scene.
