View Full Version : Huge hole in universe

The universe has a huge hole in it that dwarfs anything else of its kind. The discovery caught astronomers by surprise.

The hole is nearly a billion light-years across. It is not a black hole, which is a small sphere of densely packed matter. Rather, this one is mostly devoid of stars, gas and other normal matter, and it's also strangely empty of the mysterious "dark matter" that permeates the cosmos. Other space voids have been found before, but nothing on this scale.

Astronomers don't know why the hole is there.

"Not only has no one ever found a void this big, but we never even expected to find one this size," said researcher Lawrence Rudnick of the University of Minnesota.

Rudnick's colleague Liliya R. Williams also had not anticipated this finding.

"What we've found is not normal, based on either observational studies or on computer simulations of the large-scale evolution of the universe," said Williams, also of the University of Minnesota.

So it's not actually a hole, there's just nothing there? What a letdown.

pretty crazy though for our crazy little bubble of matter to be doing. I wonder if it will revert back to it's normal state.

Ok, so you made a thread. Now what?

Iz it in j00's m0mZ PaNTz?! LOLZ! [/gay internet slang]

I'm not even suprised by what's in space anymore.. ever since I had to do an essay on Blackholes/Quantum Mechanics; I can see it all coming.

P.S- If you all wanna be worried all day and night about immenint doom.. I suggest you read this. Doomz Linky! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SN_2006gy) I also suggest reading the Similarities at the near-bottom of the page; which contains the 'Oh Noes!' factor.

what does SN 2006gy have to do with the gap in the universe, I don't think it's a literal hole like it goes to somewhere else I think it's just a sudden lack of matter in it.

it's a gap in the universe, and it is interesting.

It's not that we don't hear you Jewy.. it's just that we don't caaaare. :mmyes:

The two have nothing in common; except that they're in space. And since this was a space-ish topic.. I thoughts I might slip that date-rape right in. Cmon.. a star that could possibly explode ANY second and cause radiation catastrophe to our Atmosphere doesn't sound too pleasant to me.

were not in harms way from the star I think were fine and kids these days need some healthy doses of it. thought the gap is only 6-10 billion light years from earth.

So, how exactly does this work?
There are three dimensions that we can measure in. There's an up, down, left, and right. It's not a black hole, so it's not like matter is being sucked into it, and likewise it has no mass because of the fact. So there's no up down left or right to it. I can imagine a horizontal, two dimensional measurement of the size of it. But it it just a vertical column of nothingness? What happens when you move down a vertical axis near it? Does it change in length at all? I need someone that can comprehend nothing better than me.

I'd always figured it was naturally beyond human comprehension to be able to imagine "nothing".

Answer --> Eta Carinæ (η Carinæ or η Car) is a highly luminous hypergiant star located approximately 7,500 light years from Earth in the Milky Way galaxy.

And that's the one that they say looks exactly like the SN 2006gy before it Super Nova'd. Anything with in 10million light-years will hit us, and this is about 8-thousand lightyears away. Although they say theres a low-chance of damage to life.. it's still a bunch of gamma-rays beaming at us that will last for 70 days.
