So last Thursday or so, someone told me about this game called I Wanna Be The Guy. Essentially it's one of those games that's so unfair and stupidly difficult that you wanna scream and destroy your keyboard. It's a 2D platformer/shooter with assorted traps and obstacles.

I'll say again, it's EXTREMELY unfair and very hard to play. I only just beat it after about 3 days of playing, the final boss took me a full day, probably didn't help much that I was playing it while sleep deprived >_>

For most of it, the slo-mo version is just fine, I switched back and forth a lot pretty arbitrarily while playing it. But for the final battle I use the Frame-Skip version and use the option to disable most shit that slows the game down.


Also, I said 'unimaginable cock' in reference to Kayin killing you in the ending sequence unless you pay attention at the end.

After about 40 minutes trying to get past the second screen (FUCK!), I managed to get stuck on the screen with the dragonflies, then the screen after it, and now the lasers. I know HOW to get past these lasers, it's just a matter of skill and luck putting it all together. :frown: I'm enjoying it though, oddly enough.

Got past the lasers, once I figured it out it was easy. Got past the room after that rather easily, and now I'm at the first boss fight. I can get through Bowser and the next guy (I dunno name) easily, but I'm still working on Wily. Can't figure out what to do with the big orb, I can't seem to clear it with a double jump.

Wart, and yes you're supposed to double jump over it. Keep trying. Also, after you beat him, before you continue to the right, for the love of god, go LEFT and SAVE.

Well, I finally managed to clear the big ball, twice, but both times I somehow managed to jump right up into the bottom of the Wily-copter. :frown:

On another note;
Push the Z button to shoot. You can fire fairly rapidly if you have a fast pointer finger. You shouldn't have to concern yourself with it but note that you can only have four shots in the air at a time.

It does it with the right wall too, but I can only get 5 of them, and it only works if I do it while double-jumping. Also, I beat Wily today and then fell off the fucking platform. I hate this game so much.

I started playing this yesterday, and have 3 separate save files, each starting in a different direction.

The Tetris screen took me fucking ages, and now I've given up on that path, because the jumping off the vines is stupid.

I've gotten up to Bowser, beaten him and Wart, and worked out how to beat Wily, but every time I try something small stuffs up and I die, so I'm getting frustrated at that.

And on the third save file, I've played for a minute and gotten up to the screen that Spastic Colon posted a screenshot of and stopped, because I preferred the other 2 paths.

This thing looks to be huge.

When you go down and get into that room with spikes it's damn hard. I only went the way I did because I couldn't get past the spiky room.

I spent roughly an hour in the spike room. It's so frustrating. Until you find out that the whole game is like that; You waste ages working out the first part of the level, only for something else to randomly come up and bite you in the ass.
Then when you do it again, you constantly stuff up the first part which you spent so long trying to work out.

I don't see what point you're making, the limit only applies to shots fired while jumping.

This game is way more fun if you work it out yourself, but if you want a hint, highlight the spoiler below.

You have to drop off the right edge of the third cloud, and jump while you're falling. The rest is easy enough to work out.

So just how many directions are there to go from Room 1?

Left and right involve walking through walls, though, so aren't as obvious.
I only found out you can go right after I ended up on the other side after going through the top path for a while, and I walked through a wall and found myself back in room 1.

Yeah, I finally got past it today. I knew how to get through the entire thing, the problem was putting it all together. I'd always either miss a jump or mistime a section. When I finally got past the screen I was stuck on I got so excited I died. :mad: But now I'm past, finally. :D Being stuck on the next screen doesn't bug me so much because it hasn't been like.. 4 days, like it was before.

EDIT: Today? I got past it about 5 minutes after making my progress post, actually.

Make sure your sound is on, and that you can hear it (basically, that you have an operating soundcard and whatnot).

As for the save thing, you just shoot it and it turns green, like all other save points. If you mean that when you save it stills makes you fight Tyson, then yeah, you have to claim the orb in order for the bosses to not return.

Ok, I've been busy the past couple of weeks, so hadn't played it since my last post, bar yesterday and today.

And good god, I'm so fucking close. I'm up to The Guy, and I've gotten far enough to the point where he gets a nose, then I've taken out one of his eyes. I just can't fucking shoot straight, that's the problem.

I've gotten one of my friends started on this as well. Last I checked he had 100+ deaths, 3+ hours gameplay, and was on screen 4, going bottom path. None of my other friends are brave enough to try it, they've seen me play it, and are scared shitless. Both of the game, and getting hooked on it like I am. It's a good way to pass the time.

You go right, and down all those little tunnels DieHard. After you get past all that you fall into a room that is nothing but spikes. It gets hard as fuck from there.

You have to jump up onto the ledge so the spike thing falls down, then jump off of it in time to where you don't get hit by it. It then stays on that platform for a second, so you jump back up and onto the platform, save, then ride it up to the next screen.

Spastic described the lower route. In order to go left or right, you have to go through the walls. One of them is noticeable as the wall has a bit sticking out. The other one I found by ending up on the other side, and coming back through it into the first room.

Edit: holy snap, I'm The Guy. Question for the dude who started the thread: why do I have no proof of being The Guy? :( There should be some sort of proof in the save file, dammit!

I'm stuck at the second save spot. I can go left, which you can jump on invisible blocks and stuff, then die, or get past the hellfuck spikes, dodge the lightning, and have to jump over more hellfuck spikes on the moving ledge. Any kind of help there?

Desert you need to go up to the hellfuck spikes and dodge the lightning. The invisible blocks go nowhere just a dead end. (I was stuck their for about a week before I figured it out.

And yeah, I really don't know why the hell it doesn't show the portrait of The Guy in the list of bosses that you've beaten at the end, it doesn't do that on my game either, even though I've beaten him multiple times.

The next release is out, and I'm downloading it at the moment in the hopes that beating The Guy now will give something tangible. I'm also hoping my current save files can transfer over.

Just got Beta version 1.0.0, and it's great. Anyone who's into this game should download it. In this, you actually get CREDIT for beating The Guy. Your save file shows it along with all the other beaten bosses. AND there's a Boss Rush option, which I'm yet to try out, but the premise sounds good to me.

Edit: The Boss Rush is coolio, it's basically just The Room of Divine Transportation, but with a stopclock so you can time how long it takes you to beat all the bosses.

The newer version also features an edited The Guy, where his eyes don't take as many bullets to kill and his massive bullet attack that he does when he breaks through the window, and is stupidly hard to dodge, because you can't judge it well, has been removed.

Those are the only changes I've seen.

Just to clarify:

I beat the old version, with the harder final boss, on Medium (the boss is just as hard on any difficulty).

I beat the new version on both Medium and Hard.

I'd gladly lose that glitch if he fixed the other bullet glitch, which I encountered 1/2 times while fighting Kraidgief and Mecha Birdo, where you could only fire one bullet at a time.

Kraidgief took me hours purely because of that.

I usually have a problem like that when I'm using the slomo version of the game, usually if I'm fighting a boss, I use the frameskip version, if it's platform jumping, I do as Kayin suggests and just use the slomo version. Though, I do still have a 3-bullet-only limit sometimes during certain boss fights, regardless of which version I use.

If you skip the first post and straight to mine, then basically, it's an insanely hard game that you should check out if you're into masochism.

I've still got the game beaten on Normal and Hard modes, but after playing all of yesterday and all of this morning, I now have the 6 secret items! (For those that don't know, the secret items are scattered throughout the game in mostly near-impossible to find places, and once you get to them, the rooms they're in are harder than the normal rooms in the game. Which is saying something.)

My Lappy crashed, so I lost my save files for IWBTG, including me having beaten it on Hard, Medium, and in the final castle on Very Hard, and having all 6 secret items. So I'm gunna go through it all AGAIN. Let's see how long it takes me.

If you get stuck on a section of it, as obvious as this may seem, jump at different times. If you jump as the spike is moving up and is halfway and you die, try jumping while it's just started moving up, or while it's moving down, etc. I remember I spent ages on that, and I kept jumping at the same time and dying. Eventually I jumped at a different time, and have hit it almost every time since.

Also, watch out for birds.

I'm pretty sure no one has beaten it on Impossible, period. Some have managed to get to the final castle, though. Some parts of the game are just too damn hard to do it one shot. The Dracula boss is a good example of this.

Oh yes, I remember this game, I think I tried and probably didn't succeed, so I never played it again.

Well coincidentally, since my post on the sword corridor I've beaten mecha birdo and am now currently trying to beat Dracula.
(Love the Kid's voice by the way)
I can't seem to find a way to attack him, all my bullets go through him.

I take it you've never played Castlevania? Any of them? That awesome exchange of words is pulled from one of the games. And, much like the games, you kill Drac by attacking his head.

Edit: and I STILL haven't started a new game. Damn my being busy all the time.

Edit edit: just played it for an hour and a half on Hard, and beat Mike Tyson, Mecha Birdo, and Dracula, and got 2 secret items.

Well, the problem is.. that i have beat The Guy twice right now... but when all finish.. the credits and that and i return to the start screen. I dont get the Boss Rush part.. and my save slot doesnt have the face of the guy, as if i had not win over him...

do u know the reason?

Oh man, I haven't played this for a long time. I remember getting to the Bowser Copter and giving up (I kept getting to the third form and getting destroyed right around that part). This thread makes me want to give it another try.

Get the newest version. Kayin released a patch for it, but the patch isn't floating around anymore, instead it comes default with the newest release.

Totally forgot about this. I beat it on Hard about 2 weeks ago, and Medium a coupla days after that. Easy peasy.
