View Full Version : Do you know of anyone named after video game characters?

I am not talking about people that happen to share the same name as characters in video games; I am talking about children that were named by their parents because of their favorite video game characters?

I bring this up because I have three children, and the two girls I have both have names that I first came to like while playing Mortal Kombat II.

I was going to name my first daughter Mileena Jade, but ended up going with Mileena Marie instead, but I still used Jade later on down the line when I had another girl.

I'm just wondering if any of you know of anyone named for video game characters?

Also, in older generations, children were often named after celebrities that their parents liked. Do you think that naming them after video game characters will emerge as commonplace?

You do realise that the only video games around when most parents were having their kids were Pac-Man, Dig-Dug and Space Invaders, and they're hardly likely to call their sons Dig-Dug are they? Unless you were born from a single unwed teenage girl who couldn't keep her legs closed, in which case you might be called Zelda or Sonic or something silly like that. But although there are some video game character names that are a little too out there, I think if you find one that more or less sounds normal it can be a good choice.

I think this might happen, although I don't think it will take the place of celebrity names or names of characters from movies (I've always liked Anakin), but I think video game character namings will become more popular.

I get what you're saying about older parents and pac man, but I'm referring to parents my age. I'm 25 and I was a young teenager playing games like Mortal Kombat, Final Fight, Clayfighter, etc.

Over the next ten years or so I would guess that we could see an increase in video game related child names. I think some of the names from Soul Caliber would be pretty cool.

I was hoping for your daughter to be named Baraka. :indiff:

Seriously, I don't know anyone named after a video game character, but that's probably I live in Quebec and that most of these characters names are english names. I wouldn't mind naming my son/daughter after a video game character if it doesn't sound too weird. Like your daughters, I think they have nice names.

I have never heard of anyone named after a video game character, but I do know a kid named Ziggy which was kind of funny since I have been a Bowie fan almost my entire life. Turns out the kid didn't like him too much, which would have to suck.

Oh, that's cool then. sorry. I hope this isn't too much of a personal question but how old are your kids?

Yeah, the Soul Calibur characters do have cool names. I personally also like the names of the characters from Kingdom Hearts. I think Riku is a cool boys name, although I think Sora would be a better girls name because it's a boys name in the game.

My kids are 8 (Mileena), 7 (Sean), and 5 (Jade). When I was married, my wife had a miscarriage with our fourth child, but we were working on a way to work the name 'Kitana' into her name. Looking back, it was probably a silly idea, but I stand by the use of 'Mileena' and 'Jade'.

Well I know a girl called Leia. Not a video game character, but she was named after a fictional character which is the direction this thread is looking in. Most people don't know that's her name, and they call her Leah.

Holy crap you're like a fucking baby machine. Anyway, isn't this quite a trend in China and Japan?

When I think of Ziggy I think of the comic strip.

It would be pretty funny seeing the playgrounds of the future;
"Ivy, tell yunsung to pass the shovel"
"No, get it yourself Master Chief"
"Miss Pacman, Agent 47 is calling me "Zelda Zelda pants mada felta"

My ex-wife wasn't a big Mortal Kombat fan, but she did like the names. We didn't want the usual names like Sally, Jennifer, or Susan. We wanted something that would stand out a little.

My fiancé wants at least one child of her own, so I will probably have at least one more child. What the name of that child will be is subject to much debate. She has come up with some really, for lack of a better word, blah names, and she is not crazy about any of the names that I have suggested. I am pretty sure using video games as a source would not be high on her approval list, but we shall see, and of course, explosm will be the first to know.

But she doesn't haven to know they're from video games.
I like Agent/Codename 47, but I doubt that would fit very well.

Ha! Master Chief! That would be a sick name! That kid would be so popular, seriously I'm not kidding!

Zelda's quite a good one for a girl I think. But I think it would make a better second name. SladeMadeFilms mentioned some normal names, like Jennifer Zelda Smith or something like that.

I'm going to name my child Elven Archer Battalion

That is actually a cool name, no joke. Good thinkin!

'Turock' sounds like the name of some 6 foot, 300 pound Russian bouncer, but it does kinda sound cool. I wonder what other names would go good with 'Turok'.

Turok Loki (Last Name)

That way you bring Norse mythology into the mix!

aahhh hahahaha, that cracked me up.

That said, most of the female names from FFX are pretty good (Rikku and Yuna). And Ashelia or Penelo (FFXII) {can you tell I'm a FF fan?}

Ugh. Heaven forbid kids should have normal names that people can pronounce and spell, and don't result in them resenting you because they were bullied at school. "Hey, Raiden, you douchebag, I'm a Street Fighter fan!"

Anyway, unless you're Japanese, you couldn't use half of the cool character names out there.

"Hi, I'm Max Payne Goldstien"

Not bad. Your kid would probably love you if you gave him a first/middle name combo like that.

But if ya figure, there are a lot of games out there with semi-normal names. If you want it to relate to videogames, just make the middle name relate.

"Hi, this is my son Duke. Duke Nukem Johnson"

She could have legally changed her name

But still, I think everyone is forgetting the greatest name ever: "Okay kids, it seems like Doom Guy is sick today."

i'd just like to point out that alot of these game character names are actually real names. like yuna, rikku, sora are all real japanese names. and hwarang is like the korean equivalent of a samuri except they also act.

plus i also know a old lady called zelda. must be a reasonably common name before the game came out.

And your point? No one ever said that the video game people invented the names. The question was if these people were named because of the games.

I'm pretty sure that Akklaim didn't invent the name, Mileena, but had it not been for them naming a Mortal Kombat II character that, then my daughter would have a completely different name.

That is the point.

I think we have to take into account the fact that about 95% of serious gamers wont be having children. I just made that statistic up, but it's probably about right.

I think the closest I've come to anyone being named anything close to the entertainment industry is my best friend, Savannah is named after a porn star who killed herself.
As for me? I want 2 children. If they are both boys, NES and Link. If they are girls Atari and Tetra.
