I started a Metal thread a while ago, I think it might have been on the old forums. But heres the thing, you post your favorite or newly found metal/hardcore band ,why you love the fuck out of them (and maybe even a pic) so that other people can find out about how great they are.

Sounds fun right!?

M'kay, my favorite right now is Bring me the Horizon. Their last album came out in 2006 but they're so badass its unbelievable. Their lyrics are great, the vocals are understandable for a deathmetal band, and their songs are full of brutal breakdowns.

Hardcore should not even be mentioned in the same sentence as metal.
I don't really have a favourite metal band, but lately I've been really into Machine Head's latest album "The Blackening". Definatly metal at its finest.

For a pretty decent metalcore band, check out Ligeia. They are relatively local, and the free show they put on I heard was "The Shit".

For some hardcore, I'm a fan of Stick To Your Guns. One of my all time favorite songs is "This Is More (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2rypbO_ELA)".

Ten Masked Men are probably one of the coolest heavy bands I know of. They specialize in renewing older songs as Heavy Metal covers.

Covered Songs:

Justin Timberlake - Cry Me A River
Effel 65 - I'm Blue
Britney Spears - Hit Me Baby One More Time
Coolio - Gangsters Paradise
Bee Gees - Stayin Alive
Geenie In A Bottle
Message In A Bottle
Livin La Viva Loca
Play That Funky Music
White Wedding
You Spin Me Around

Just too name a few. Hilarious if you ask me.

I checked it out, they kind of suck, the music is ok but the singer is rubbish he just sort of growls all the lyrics at the exact same pitch and tone in every song. I don't mind singer who sort of growl the words as long as they alter it a bit so it does actually resemble singing.

Sarge51

Heavy Metal is all about that though. I do wish he could make it sound a little better and different. But hearing heavy guitar to those songs are priceless.

I was actually looking around the other day for new band, I came across one band "Strapping Young Lad". God, the drums in this band are the best.

Also, if you're looking for other good metal bands, go for Metallica (Old albums like Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets), Slayer, Dethklok, Arch Enemy (2002 and on, old singer isn't all that good), and Mercenary.

Strapping Young Lad

My girlfriend told me about them because she said they sorta reminded her of System of a Down, my favorite band, and I'm glad she told me about them. Their drummer is definitely one of the best in metal. I think they broke up though, or their on one of those "hiatus" :ahe:

Things I have been getting into recently worth mentioning:
Decapitated-If your into drumming, Vitek definitely has alot to offer. He started in the band very young, but managed has almost more talent than some of his veterans. Unfortunately he was killed in a bus accident in Russia a few months ago :frown:
Mushroomhead-Metal mixed in with the perfect hits of Industrial music. Unlike Slipknot, they have a keyboardist, and really incorporate him to make some awesome music. Don't call them or even compare them to Slipknot. They'll throw batteries at you.
Soulfly-Former Sepultura singer Max Cavalera definitely knows how to compose, and he's definitely not afraid to do anything new. Soulfly's last album Dark Ages toys around with alot of Carribean/Reggae beats, and even some Russian on the song Molotov. But all of his album features the perfect combination of metal, and tribal beats from his native Brazil.
OOMPH!-Although Rammstein is better well known, OOMPH! is really the band that they looked up to. Their sound is very similar to Rammstein, but they toy around with the Industrial sounds alot more than Rammstein.

That's some for now.

I'm pretty sure they're on hiatus (thank god), they've been busy as hell for the past couple of years with releasing two albums, Alien and The New Black, and touring all over the friggin' place. They definitely needed the break. For the time being, Devin Townsend's solo stuff is very much worth checking out as Ziltoid the Omniscient has to be one of my favorite albums of 2007.

Gene Holgan's the name and yes, he is a master behind the drum kit. He actually started with another great metal band, Death.

Yep, Gene-O got a rather extensive resume. Here's a list of the bands he has played with:

Death (1993-1995) - Played on Individual Thought Patterns and Symbolic
Dark Angel (1984-Today)
Strapping Young Lad (1997-Today) - Played on every SYL album except for Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing
Zimmer's Hole - VERY entertaining band, for fans of GWAR and SYL.
Testament - Only played on Demonic
Devin Townsend (1996-2001) - Played on Infinity, Terria, and Physicist.
Tenet - Jed Simon of SYL's solo band, album out this spring/summer.
Dethlok - I think everyone knows about the story.

Plus several other live gigs with other bands like Unearth and Old Man's Child. If you haven't seen him live, it's totally unbelievable. He drums like a fucking machine, but doesn't break a sweat at all.

Reading through all of this, I saw a few bands I didn't know before. Cool, most of it is great stuff. :D

I only got into the "harder" varieties of metal a few months ago, spent a few years only listening to heavy metal, powermetal and stuff like that.

Bands missing on the list that you guys should defenitally check out:

Children of Bodom. Black/Death. I can't believe this band hasn't been mentioned before. Okay, so they've commercialised somewhat, but it doesn't take away their awesomeness. Be sure to listen to "Hate me" and "Every Time I Die"!

Sabaton. Power. Great band, opened a few of the gigs on the European DragonForce tour for Inhuman Rampage (great album, by the way). I've only got their first album, which basically has a war-theme. All the songs on it are inspired by WWII, Cold War, Vietnam etc. The singer's got a really unique voice. At least worth a try! (Songs to check: "Primo Victoria", "Wolfpack" and "Panzer Battalion")

KIUAS. Heavy/Power/Prog. Now this band is kind of a weird one. They actually mix alot of genres into one blend and it sounds abnormally good. They're opening for Children of Bodom in the UK, March this year. Awesome band! Be sure to check "Warrior Soul" and "Race with the Falcons".

Stratovarius. Heavy/Power. Old band on the scene, needs no explanation. Great vocalist, awesome bassist and a legendary keyboard player: Jens Johansson. Check out "Destiny" and "Hunting High and Low"!

Kamelot. Heavy/Power/Symphonic. The only non-European band on my list. American guitarists and drummer, Norwegian singer and I THINK a Finnish keyboard player. Great live performance. Be sure to listen to "March of Mephisto" (with Shagrath of Dimmu Borgir), "When the Lights are Down", "Ghost Opera", "Descent of the Archangel" and "Lost and Damned".

too cock rock for me.

There is no such thing as too cock rock! I love power metal and cheesy metal, and also enjoy thrash and NWOBHM. I particularly enjoy bands such as Helloween, Stratovarius, and the like, but Iron Maiden is easily my favourite band. I'm also a fan of heavier metal, but not too heavy, and not hardcore or any of that 'music'. Bands like Amon Amarth are about as heavy as i get.

Thrash:

Kreator
Death Angel
Megadeth
Slayer
Legion of the Damned

Death:
Atheist
Sepultura (Cavalera era)(also fits thrash but whatever)

Obituary
Kataklysm

Cannibal Corpse

Black Metal:

Progressive:

Mastodon
Axamenta

Other bands that I don't want to create a whole new category for:
Pantera
Fear Factory
Celtic Frost
Black Label Society
Blind Guardian
Soulfly

I listen to a lot of other metal bands as well but I'm not going to list them as I only know a couple of their songs and don't want to look like I listen to them all the time.

How could you like the good bands listed by SLjimbolian, but yet like August Burns Red at the same time? It's one of the most meatheaded, generic Metalcore bands of all time. I'd rather listen to Avenged Sevenfold, jesus.

Anyways, the bands that are currently in my rotation are:

Been listening to these guys a lot lately. Really love "Take This Life" and "Embody the Invisible"

Lamb Of God
Two words. "Black Label". (+all their other songs)

Devildriver
New band I just stated listening to. Bought their album The Last Kind Words which I believe is their third.

BONUS (ahh!):
http://youtube.com/watch?v=k4iRGJeYB_M - Probably one of my top three off the album, "These Fighting Words"

Sonata Arctica
My go to band for speed/power metal.

Anthrax
Of course their on my list.

Endeverafter
Wouldn't consider them so much metal as maybe hard rock, but I'm gonna put em in anyway. Just released Kiss or Kill a while ago. If you like guitar solos EVH style then you'll like their guitarist, Michael Grant.

BONUS (yippe):
http://youtube.com/watch?v=SjrbcoedSQM - "Baby Baby Baby" off of Kiss or Kill. This is the clean version of the video. Lots. Of. (censored) Boobs. But you can find the unclean version somewhere, I saw it before.

Becoming The Archetype is pretty good, but the whole Christian metal thing is not particularly my cup of tea. There are a few exceptions though like Angra and Demons & Wizards.

Oh, and I really loathe Solid State, a Christian metal label. I had to deal with them when I worked as a metal radio DJ and they're nothing but a bunch of pricks.

I've been noticing some of you guys like most of the mainstream metal stuff like 'tallica, In Flames, and *shudders* Slipknot, but here's a few "gateway" bands if you really wanna dig deeper into metal.

Between The Buried and Me
Soilwork - I recommend their older stuff, the new album's kinda lame.
Ihsahn
Testament
Alchemist (not to be confused with the American rapper, this is a prog/industrial metal group from Australia)
Trail Of Tears
Burst
Daylight Dies

I've heard this vague story from other people. Truth is though that pretty much all labels are going to be a "bunch of pricks" and if they aren't then they'll get bigger and turn into a bunch of pricks or they'll drop of the face of the planet like most indie labels do. The only exception I can think of are labels set up by single bands in order to lease their products to other companies.

Anyone here like Evergrey? They could be considered more pop-metal and their last album screams "we're trying too hard to be edgy" but I really like their music.

Not necessarily. There are some semi-major and indie labels that are great to work with like Candlelight, Metal Blade, and Nuclear Blast based on my experiences with them. The whole "bunch of pricks" theory pretty much applies to major labels with wildly popular bands; or it's a label that's terribly mismanaged in the first place.

Granted I never dealt with bands like Kiss, Radiohead, or Red Hot Chili Peppers, but I've had my fair share of working with other bands like Jedi Mind Tricks, Lamb Of God, Opeth, and Vinnie Paul of Pantera/Damageplan/Hell Yeah and they've all been cool with me. I think the reason some of these label people who act like pricks to other people is that they act like pricks or retards to them as well. It's plain and simple - don't act stupid or cocky with the labels and you'll be fine.

Great great sound. I don't dare call what they produce "music". It'll make your speakers melt, your insides rumble and your neighbourhood wonder if they're going through a minor earthquake. Listen to it LOUD and enjoy!

Faves:
Richard from "00 Void"
My Wall (w/ Julian Cope) from "White 1"
F.W.T.B.T. - believe it or not, a Metallica cover, with DRUMS!!, from "Flight of the Behemoth"

I tend to listen to a lot of a few bands, then move to a new group, back to the first, to another, on and on but a few I really enjoy include:
Anorexia Nervosa
Agony Scene (shut up)
At the Gates
Black Dahlia Murder
Children of Bodom
Dark Tranquility
Gwar
In Flames
Kalmah
Lamb of God
Norther
Impaled Nazarene are kind of good every now and then and I recently got into Ensiferum.

Also, to whoever said they are more into ska/punk, I don't remember who, you should check out Leftover Crack for a bit of ska/punk/metal/blah fusion (depending on song, of course.)

There's some good stuff in here, and some pretty average bands. Anyway, a few albums recommendation for you guys who don't seem to know death and black metal pretty well (copypasta of a few description I've written on other forums over the past few months, so there's no constant format).

Death Metal

http://panther1.last.fm/coverart/300x300/1420182.jpg

Morbid Angel - One of the first band in the scene, Morbid Angel secured their place in metal history with their highly praised album “Blessed are the Sick”. That album truly is one of the best DM album ever created : complex, harsh, and very progressive for the time. Those guys were the first death metal band to release an album on a major label, a true testament of the recognition of their talent outside of the underground metal scene. Here's "Blessed are the Sick/Leading the Rats" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvfoePd5mnk)

http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/ciu/09/02/e366a2c008a093c108b78010._AA240_.L.jpg

Demilich – Demilich is what happens when you put together very low gurgling vocals, with complex and ever-changing riffs and a good drummer. They produced only one album before disbanding, Nespithe, but it was so good that it managed to build a cult following around the band. These guys are known for their extremely long and obtuse lyrics titles (ex: "The Planet That Once Used to Absorb Flesh in Order to Achieve Divinity and Immortality (Suffocated to the Flesh That It Desired)") and subject matter. Highly recommended band. Their album is available for free on http://www.anentity.com/demilich/ (it’s the band’s website).

http://static.metal-archives.com/images/2/9/5/295.jpg

Amorphis – Those Finns produced two very good and very different albums that represent pretty well European death metal. The Karellian Ishtmus is a straight death metal album with simple but evocative lyrics and pretty tight instrumentation. If you can, try to find a version that has “The Privilege of Evil” ep attached to it as it contains some of the best songs they ever produced. No sample here as it is pretty difficult to find a song of that album streamed on the internet.

On “Tales from a Thousand Lakes” however, Amorphis creates a definitive Doom/Death album that borrows heavily from the Finnish epic, the “Kalevala” and earlier metal bands like Black Sabbath. It is more melodic, and much more sophisticated than their earlier album, but it still keeps in touch with what death metal represents (something you can’t say about their later albums). Black Winter Day (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLUhe1rT-mw)

http://www.cynicalsphere.com/images/cover_presence_lg.jpg

Atheist – Another awesome American band that has been hugely influential to the genre. They’ve managed to include jazz influences in death metal better than anyone else before or after them. “Unquestionable Presence” is the kind of album that never gets old, I’ll probably still be listening to it (if only casually) in ten years from now. Here's "Mother Man" live from wacken 2006 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNWhqyaLOJk).

http://www.zajlik.hu/bands/kepek/album/therionbeyondsanctorum1991.jpg

Therion – Not to be confused with the current Therion which is releasing symphonic metal album. The original Therion was a death metal band with a great sense of melody, and great compositional skills. Classical influences are obvious on quite a few songs of theirs, and you can clearly see a progression toward a more operatic style in their later years. “Beyond Sanctorum” is a great and innovative death metal album true to the genre’s root. In “ Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho Megas” however, the death metal guitars are starting to leave the place for a more classical NWOBHM style of playing. It is still an ok album though. Here's a cover (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZaoF69Vquw) of "Symphony of the Dead" by a Swiss band called Messiah. It's truer to the sound of the older Therion than anything else I've been able to find (Much better than the instrumental version that they released a in "A'arab Zaraq - Lucid Dreaming").

http://static.metal-archives.com/images/3/0/0/9/3009.JPG

Gorguts - Obscura is perhaps the most complex death metal album ever created. The technical and songwriting ability of this band is just astounding, they manipulate dissonance and chaos like no others to create a powerful sonicscape full of contradictions and of different ideas that makes for a highly rewarding listen. Saying that Obscura is an intense album would be an euphemism, it leaves you mentally exhausted in a way that shouldn't be possible from a death metal record. Very impressive album.

http://static.metal-archives.com/images/1/4/6/146.jpg

At The Gates - The Red In the Sky Is Ours. ATG is pretty much the father of melodic death metal, though it's not really obvious with that album. TRITSIO is a complex and weird death metal album that just sounds like nothing else with their weird song structure and instrumentation (violins?). Very good.

Demigod - Slumber of Sullen Eyes. Currently my favorite death metal album, it's a really great album that is varied rhythmically and musically. It reminds of the Swedish death metal scene at times, but it's not a Dismember/Entombed ripoff.

Immolation - Shadows in the Light, another intense somewhat technical album that is dissonant yet not disjointed.

Incantation - Onward To Golgotha, if you want to listen to a wall of sound of overwhelming guitar, this death metal album is great.

Crimson Massacre - The Luster of Pandemonium is great if you're feeling like listening to some intense technical death metal with a subtle melody. Almost reminds one of J.S. Bach at times.

Black Metal

http://static.metal-archives.com/images/3/7/8/378.jpg

Burzum - Det Som En Gang Var. Not as well known as Filosofem and Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, but as good as the others (if not better). It contains probably my favorite Burzum song, "Key to the Gates", and a lot of other classic songs. Like the rest of Burzum's discography, it's some dark (though it does not really sounds evil, if that makes sense) and introspective music if you can get past the thin production and the harshness inherent to Vikernes' style.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c1/Cover_antichrist.jpg

Gorgoroth - With their two first album, Gorgoroth mastered the art of crafting epic black metal soundscape with classics like the songs Gorgoroth or Maaneskyggens Slave. They are nearly unmatched in term of lyrical compositions where the emotions carried progress and changes along with the flow of the song.

Recommended albums : Antichrist, Pentagram

Maaneskyggens Slave (http://youtube.com/watch?v=k1zXoyc47ag) Simply amazing, there's no other words for how great this is.

http://static.metal-archives.com/images/1/0/9/9/1099.jpg

Enslaved - Once part of the black metal inner circle, Enslaved decided to explore their ancestral origins as their major theme instead of going in the direction pioneered by bands like Mayhem or Beherit. These themes thus inspired them to compose epic songs that lack the evil unddertones that are prevalent in most of black metal. Their masterful use of keyboard with their more than able technical abilities (for black metal) allowed them to creat great songs that progress slowly but that are highly effective and evocative.

Albums recommended : Emperor/Hordanes Land, Vikinglir Veldi, Frost

Slaget I Skogen Bortenfor (http://youtube.com/watch?v=lUcZpXXTXpU) (the song is cut short since it's too long for youtube. Still pretty awesome though)

http://static.metal-archives.com/images/9/3/93.jpg

Emperor - Perhaps the band that is the most responsible of popularizing black metal outside of the underground, Emperor played a keyboard driven and highly dramatic style of black metal in their seminal "In the Nightside Eclipse". More technically able and professional than most of their contemporary, they created the sugenre known as symphonic black metal

Recommended albums : In the Nightside Eclipse, Emperor/Hordanes Land, Anthems to the Welkins at Dusk

I am the Black Wizard (http://youtube.com/watch?v=hVpq4edVRNs)

http://static.metal-archives.com/images/2/7/1/4/2714.jpg

Sacramentum - A bit like Dissection, Sacramentum existed at first in the once uncharted area betweem black metal and death metal. Their style consisted of very lyrical songs that were also highly energetic and melodic. "Far Away From the Sun" is a great representation of what well produced and complex black metal can accomplish : it is dark without becoming cliché and it is melodic without becoming annoying.

Recommended albums : Far Away From the Sun, The Coming of Chaos

Fan Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/sacramentum). It doesn't have my favorite song of them (When Night Surrounds Me), but the selection is pretty good.

http://static.metal-archives.com/images/9/7/7/5/9775.jpg

Blut Aus Nord - Black Metal band from France, Blut Aus Nord is one of those bands that has managed to substantially change their output without falling into mediocrity. The earlier albums of theirs are more traditionnal black metal, with at times a subtle nod at earlier Enslaved or Burzum, but with "The Work Which Tranforms God" they wandered in territories never explored before. While "Ultima Thulée" is a contemplative album that sometimes reminds an ambient recording (not that it doesn't have more energetic parts, like during the great "On the Way to Vigrid"), TWWTG is dark, brooding and very haunting with it's masterful use of repetitiveness and the unsettling off-beat drumming.

Ultima Thulée, The Work Which Transforms God and Fathers of the Icy Age are all great records that I recommend highly.

Fan Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/thehowlingofgod) that has two great songs from both UT and TWWTG.

http://img1.nnm.ru/imagez/gallery/e/2/c/0/7/e2c0706c0106c559821a3db24c7f2b10.jpg

Nokturnal Mortum - Goat Horns. Nokturnal Mortum is a keyboard driven black metal band obviously inspired by their Ukrainian origins and by the great classical composers of the past. This album is simply great : it is epic, dark and full of pride and beauty. All the tracks are masterfully written and they flow one into another perfectly. The introduction and conclusion, which are both instrumental tracks, are especially worthy of attention, as they are with the title track (http://youtube.com/watch?v=XFAj8XIoT_Q) some of the best moments this band has given the world. Very good band.

And to those that might be put off by the fact that they're associated with NS ideologies, "Goat Horns" (which is their best record) makes no clear mention of them. Those themes do become more obvious in their later releases though.

http://static.metal-archives.com/images/9/5/2/9/9529.jpg

Sorcier des Glaces - Snowland. Amazing black metal band from Quebec. Snowland is an ode to the cold and the majesty of winter. The Norwegian influences can be heard throughout the record, but it stands on it's own feet nonetheless : it excels in showcasing the beauty of the winter season like no others before him. It is atmospheric and melancholic at times, violent and relentless at others, this album is bound to impress anyone that has lived through a real northern winter, or anyone that longs to do so.

I Shalt Become - Wanderings is an awesome black metal album to listen to while taking a walk. Burzum is a very clear influence, but it's original and interesting enough to prevent it from becoming a ripoff.

Rotting Christ - Thy Mighty Contract, Greek black metal, so its pretty different from the Norwegian kind. It's pretty melodic and interesting.

Primordial - A Journey's End is, as far as I'm concerned, the best Primordial album. It's black metal, but with a very celtic and pagan feel to it and It's a pretty varied album with great songs like the acoustic "Dark Song" or the powerful "Autumns Ablaze".

So, where to start with all this? Well you should start with the beginning, of course. If you want to have a good basis on either death or black metal, you have to listen to the seminal bands that were there at the beggining of both genre. You just can't get past that. Once that's done, usually you'll start to understand why "Eltist" metalheads are always telling you that what you listen to sucks, and why their bands are better than the new hip grindblackdeathsceneprogressiveindiecore band that has 1 million listen on myspace.

Here's some albums you should listen to of both genre if you want to have an ok basis (Not all of them are described above, but I don't have the time to do that now, so that will have to wait).

Death Metal

Death - Human
Atheist - Unquestionnable Presence
Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten
Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick, Altars of Madness
Dismember - Like an Everflowing Stream
Carcass - Necroticism : Descanting the Insalubrious
Deicide - Legion
At The Gates - The Red In the Sky is Ours
Therion - Beyond Sanctorum

Black Metal

Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Immortal - Pure Holocaust
Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
Gorgoroth - Antichrist
Enslaved - Vikinglir Veldi
Sacramentum - Far Away from the Sun
Bathory - Blood Fire Death
Beherit - Drawing Down the Moon

Happy listening :).

Hey guys,
first post goes to the metal thread! I used to browse these forums but never felt like registering, UNTIL NOW! As a pre-note check out the documentary Head Banger's journey. Really good movie.

From this thread I'm now checking out Strapping Young Lad, In Flames, That Nespithe album, mushroomhead (although I am a slipknot fan so I'm kind of tainted from them), and children of bodom (loved listening to them before but Im going to get back into them).

Myself, my tastes go ALL OVER the place... Rather than knock the selection, be happy that I'm willing to listen to all types. Korn, System of a Down, Serj Tankian, Dimmu Borgir, Black Dahlia Murder, Slayer, Black label Society, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Emperor, Celtic Frost, Enslaved, Slipknot, Trivium, RAMMSTEIN!, Puddle of Mudd, Three Days Grace, Seether, opeth, Nine Inch Nails, Mastodon, Lamb of God, Jack Off Jill (the only girl band I'll listen too), HIM (a little soft, I know), Breaking Benjamin (great local band CHECK THEM OUT! They play with Seether and Three Days Grace a lot), Cannibal Corpse, some Avenged Sevonfold (like Strength of the World), Alexisonfire (not metal at all, I know), Turbonegro (not really metal...), Sixx AM (more rock, really good album), Rise Against (a little punkish) and even Rob Zombie.

Rather than say "Metal" for my favorite music, I just say "Hard music" to avoid all the "No that's not metal" or "that's so weak" arguments.
-cheers, Dan

I only listen to early metal like Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple. Like Heavy Metal, where the name came from. But also abit Glam Metal from 80's, although, not much.

The favorite metal songs is without doubt:
1, Babe I'm Gonna Leave You - Led Zeppelin
2, Liar - Queen (from their first album. Belive it or not, this is metal).
3, Stone Cold Crazy - Queen (Metallica even made a cover of this one).
4, Child in Time - Deep Purple
5, Heartbreaker - Led Zeppelin

A bunch of really overly-typical(Dragonforce) and/or crappy music, why don't you try In Flames they're pretty bad. How about Slipknot while we're at it, I hear they suck so you should like them just fine. However if you want some good metal well my friend I have a treat for you.

- Meshuggah - Thrash/Prog Metal
- Wolves in The Throne Room - Black Metal
- Ayreon - Prog. Power Metal
- Dream Theater - Prog. Metal
- Falconer - Old Fashioned Power Metal
- Helloween - Power Metal
- Life at Zero - Awesome!
- My Dying Bride - Death/Doom
- !T.O.O.H! - Tech. Death
- Black Sabbath - Heavy Metal
- Sonata Arctica - Power Metal
- Volbeat - Odd Power Metal

and the list goes on. By the way I don't hate Dragonforce it's just that they get old after 8 or so years.

August Burns Red
Metalcore

August Burns Red is currently one of my favorite bands. Their vocals are powerful, and their lyrics always are intriguing; full of detail to expand the message that the listener is trying to percieve.
Right now, they're on tour with As I Lay Dying (another great artists), whom they're very similar to. Anyone who is interested in the overall Christian Metalcore groups would love August Burns Red.

I really can't stand Jack Black. Their gimmick has gotten wayyyyyyy too old fast. Sadly, I hear they're making a "heavy metal" video game featuring Jack Black as the main character coming out for 360 and PS3 in the near future, so I'm positive I'll avoid that one at all costs.

Yeah, I don't see the big thing in a lot of newer bands.

Whoa, I hope you're not talking about Dream Theater. These guys have been around much longer than probably you have been born (1985). I will admit Dream Theater's an acquired taste like most prog bands, but they really do stand out with their live performances. If you're not sold yet, at least give their Awake and Systematic Chaos albums a chance.

I downloaded some Dying Fetus this week and that's definitely the vocals I have been looking for for a while. I also downloaded DAATH. Talented, but for some reason I felt they were getting repetetive, although they're Industrialish song Death on the Dance Floor was pretty cool.

I ALSO recently downloaded the Skinny Puppy Greater Wrong of the Right concert. Man, talk about putting on an awesome stage presence.

Yeah, I've been recently getting into Ministry lately too. Not a big fan of their style, but I thought Rio Grande Blood was pretty awesome. I might go to their show in April, I think it'd be nice to see a band's last tour. I'd expect it to be extravagant.

SOAD, have you tried Psyclon Nine? Although most of their songs are heavier on the synths than on the guitars, their last CD Crwn Thy Frncatr has the addition of Black Metal elements to it, so it gets pretty heavy.

And if you listen to Rammstein, don't be too shy to try OOMPH! They toy more with the synths than Rammstein does, but still bring heavy guitars into the mix.

Everyone has a lot of opinions on them. As it seems, people either love them to death, or people completel despise them. :ahe:.

Personally, I cannot stand to see another A7X album released. They've never really sounded that great to me. Their guitarists are mediocre soloists at best, so.

Anyway.

My contribution to this thread, is this.

A7X isn't that good. and..
Check out the band, "Oh, Sleeper". They're really good sounding and they're making some good ground.
As well, Dream Theater is really good, but they're over hyped way too much.

Trivium and Avenged Sevenfold are horrible.

Iron Maiden is okay. Guitarists are really great and they've had some huge songs. I know that they're an inspiration to a lot of artists, and they've been a huge metal band for years.

Killswitch Engage is one of my favorite bands of all time. Huge choruses, fast riffs, and their current singer, Howard Jones, has a great voice. I personally enjoy his singing and screaming.

Would you guys stop bitching about Metalcore and Hardcore bands? Core is an offset of Metal, whether you elitists want to accept it or not. Hardcore is, for the most part, half Metal half Punk. Yes, love all the old European metal, not just the Swedish stuff. That whole black metal movement of the '80s and early '90s did wonders for metal, inspiring great bands like Opeth and Dimmu Borgir etc. Love bands like old Celtic Frost etc.

Oh and to diverge, WTF? I went and saw Iron Maiden a few weeks ago in Sydney. They were absolutely amazing! But why the hell would they be opened by Behind Crimson Eyes? This goes back to the arguement about the intolerance of different sects of metal fans for one another. As soon as BCE came out they were booed, and everyone gave them the finger and continued to boo them until they got off. Surely the promoters would have known this would happened, so why have them open?

I like Swedish death metal to some extend, but I don't like all that "Göteborg-metal", I prefer more of an old school taste, like Death Breath, Grave or Demonical.

On the other hand I love Swedish grindcore, bands like Nasum, Gadget and Regurgitate, and I think that many of the best grindcore bands these days comes from Sweden. Also some swedish crust punk(yeahyeah not true metal, screw you) is very good, bands like Skitsystem and Wolfbrigade.

Yeah, I don't like melodic death metal too much either, I'm more of a fan of the specific Swedish/Nordic sound of the early nineties : sunlight studio production, more melodic phrase (than their american counterparts), etc.

Finland has some amazing bands too. Demigod's Slumber of Sullen Eyes is a classic, and so is Nespithe of Demilich or The Karellian Ishtmus of Amorphis.

I like Nasum, but it's the only Swedish grindcore band I know, and I don't know Crust at all, so I can't talk about them. Rotten Sound is a fine grindcore band from Finland though.

Math Metal is metal with complex time signatures, rhythms, and structures. The music doesn't seem to have a structure, nothing really repeats, like verse and chorus normally do, instead it changes once each phrase is over.

In my opinion, Math Metal deserves to be a genre more so than things like Doom Metal, and Speed Metal, and a lot of other silly subgenres, but even then, doesn't really deserve to exist.

If we got rid of subgenres altogether, then The Black Dahlia Murder would count as metal. What other base style would you say they are, hmm? Too heavy and complex for rock. Definitely not punk. They're metal.

I know what it is, I'm not retarded enough say something and not know what it is... It’s actually called Polyrhythm where different instruments use different time signatures to create many different rhythms at once. The music does have structure; however, it is embedded in each individual instrument, rather than all instruments following the same structure. Each rhythm entwines with the others, as they end passages with different time signatures at the same time, and begin new ones.

My point actually was that labelling metal genres has become ridiculous, it will get to the point where each band will have its own genre.

I think being metal is not only the music a particular band may play, but how a band represents themselves. Try-hard douche bags whose only interest is getting famous and rich are definitely not metal. It goes against what I, at least, think the ideals of being metal are. Sure a metal band can be popular and rich, but it shouldn't be their primary motive. Otherwise metal will become no better than that shit prefabricated pop rubbish that we all do everything to defy.

Metal has always been, and should always remain about the creation of original, and individual music. Not following the big "flavour of the month" image which is ever present in the grindcore/metalcore scenes.

One of the bands Michael Amott was in before Arch Enemy. Their music is very similar to Arch Enemy's and the vocalist sounds very much like Angela Gossow.

Imagine Shadows Fall fronted by Bruce Dickinson with his nuts caught in a closed door. The vocals are fucking wierd at times, but that just seems to add to the awesomeness.

I can't remember the last time I heard a new metal band that didn't suck. The "Noughties" suck cock. It's getting depressing.

Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine are possibly the shittest of the bunch. Although the competition is pretty steep.

I personally like Between the Buried and Me,Colors was a great album with quite a lot of styles.Alaska(another album),was pretty mediocre to me,so don't form an opinion from there.

Heh - Slipknot

A few metal albums I recommend to anyone who wants to check out some good music (not Slipknot or Mushroomhead!!)

Cephalic Carnage - Xenosapian
Nasum - Helivate
Pig Destroyer - Phantom Limb
Neurosis - Times of Grace
Sunn0))) - Black 1
Despised Icon - The Ills of Modern Man
Isis - Ocianic
Jesu - Conqueror
Mastodon - Blood Mountain
Botch - We are the Romans
These arms are Snakes - Easter
Old Man Gloom - Christmas
65 Days of Static - The Fall of Maths
Mouth of the Architect - The ties that blind

this is ON point.
You should check out "Buried At Sea" its super slow doom, but super heavy
Also some newer bands in the sludgy heavy riffage
Black Cobra, Akimbo,Swarm of the lotus,Rwake, TORCHE.

Yeah, a few of you guys know what you are talking about.
But the blend of hardcore in metal is done, its now apart of the culture. There is no getting rid of it. So, If its heavy, and blows kids minds..Its metal
Leave it at that. Music is music

exept for Korn...they suck

...'kay. First off, pant needs to be "pants". Secondly, it's not entirely necessary to type your whole post holding the shift key down. Fix that as well.

Interpret the band however you will. But, they're not "girl pant wearing" or "115 pound anorexic dweebs". And no one in the band either has long enough hair to probably straighten. Total irony in your post. You're looking pretty unintelligent right about now.

And try contributing to the thread. Even if it's an opinion, do it moreso in a manner that's less.. stupid, for lack of a better term.

There's other subgenre's of metal. So.

Hey dude you know what's awesome? that picture that got posted right after your tattletale comment trying to glorify YOUR lack of intelligence. It comepletely disproves everything about that terrible whiny band. They look like boyscouts with hair that is definitely long enough to straighten {by my elite cosmetology standards} if you consider those kids as metal in any way, then you obviously don't know real metal. And for your information, I didn't hold down the shift key whilst typing that.... I pressed caps lock once.

Badass punishment. Too bad I wasn't around to serve it, huh? :ahe:.

"Tattletale comment"... please explain to me how at all, by posting my previous comment, the post served the point of "tattling".

Sorry that my information on their cosmetology was incorrect. I forgot how oh so important it was for a band to dress and act a certain way. That truly defines what metal is, huh?

Hey, if you don't think they're "metal", then that's cool. But there's plenty of other bands listed here that you can easily degrade as well.

Are we going to talk about metal music (in all it's different sub-genres.) Or are we going to throw hissy fits and have bitch fights?

Eidolon (http://www.myspace.com/eidolonofficial)

http://www.metal-observer.com/pics/eidolon/eidolonband4.jpg

A power metal band from Canada, formed by brothers Glen and Shawn Drover, who both joined the reformed Megadeth. Haven't got through all 7 of their albums yet, but Nightmare World, and The Parallel Otherworld are the one's I've listened to and both are fantastic.

Glen Drover is so much better in Eidolon than Megadeth. He knows how to play the songs and can easily comprehend them. That's why Eidolon's a great artist.

Despite the that Eidolon is good, I don't think they come in close range to Megadeth though. When I saw Megadeth live, Glen came on, and don't get me wrong, he is a great guitarist, but his guitar work live was pretty sloppy and didn't match former Megadeth guitarists.

I think Chris Broderick is lead for Megadeth now, or atleast filling in.

You know, I think a pretty underrated band is Chimaira. I saw them on Tuesday, and they were pretty damn sweet. They're my favorite band, and if you're looking for an awesome band to listen to they can't be beat. Their new album 'Resurrection' is one of the best albums of 2007 in my opinion. Personally I don't really like classic metal bands like Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden, and I don't know if anyone would like Chimaira as much as I do, but I'd say they might be appreciated by those who like Lamb of God and DevilDriver, maybe even Slipknot.

OKay, Metallica's Black Album would have to be my favourite Metallica Album ever considering it's the only one I own, (I have listened to others though)

http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/pic/AQUA/PS176~Atreyu-Posters.jpg

And no matter what else I listen to, I'll always come back to, love and worship Atrey from their Visions EP, all the way up untill A Death-Grip On Yesterday. If someone so much as even hints towards Lead Sails (And a Paper Anchor) being their best album to date, I will personally slit their throat. I like some of the songs off it, but not enough to call it a good album, it's way too soft. But my favourite album would have to be "The Curse", I've always been faithful to it.

Sorry to go into Sub genres, which I do hate, but I'm really getting into Deathcore. I was looking up bands on last.fm and theres just so much talent in the genre I have to mention it.

At the throne of judgment - great band, really talented

From the shallows - Has two members from the black dahlia murder and have a similar, but heavier sound.

Winds of plagues - Really popular amazing band. Their new album has a theme of epic movie music.

What band I like? hmm, kinda hard, actually. I like Severed Savior, Death, Obituary, Hatebeak, Anorexia Nervosa, Venom, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Vagitarians, Anal Penetration, Anal Cunt, Napalm Death, etc. etc. I could go on forever. My favourite genre is Death. Why? Because it's brutal, the lyrics are growled (I love growling), they don't add keyboards or anything, it's just plain metal, only a little bit louder.
