View Full Version : The doodlings of a lazy madman

Well some friends and I having been working on a Webtoon series (well the pilot episode) for a while now and we recently had to change our Production team name. Now the series itself is takin' ages because one
: i'm the sole artist and two: I am an extremely well trained procrastinator and generaly a lazy fuzzy haired bastard.
So back to what this is all about. Originally our little team was going to be called PinceCone Productions, but to our horror and dismay we discovered a pre-existing actual company by this name. So we thought to change it to PineCone Media. Thankfully no such company existed. Until recently.
So after some thought of old jokes we had I whipped up a new logo and decided some none bias critique would suitably tickle my ego enough to get me in the mood to work on the damn series.

EDIT: OH! And just in case your wondering I did the whole thing in Macromedia Flash Professional 8 with a mouse. I'm saving up for a tablet!

If you ever think of animating that, you will be my new hero and I shall never wash my eyes again. Very nicely done -- Even if it was made with a tablet!

Originally it was going to be animated and sort of freee frame on that last image. Then I added the water and soap suds and then the spunge got a complete overhall. Plus I'm not that great an animator (one of the other guys does all that).
Once i get a tablet I'll maybe sit down and do it frame by frame. Who knows.
Thanks for the comment.

Cheers, but what do you think of the logo. Anything you can think of that would improve it at all, or should i tone it down a little?

The logo is good, but I think the letters need to pop out a little more. They are too soft, especially the Sponge part and kind of blend in a little too well with the background.

Yeah, orginally there was no water/soap suds so the sponge part on the donut (as I call it) was alot more visible. So here we go, two new versions of the logo taht deal with that issue.

EDIT: Wait, no after re-reading your post were you just talking about the "a BULLET PROOF SPONGE production" part? Wait, no. Meh, wither way, these any better?

The top one is better. The bottom looks crowded with the unevenness of the letters around the donut.

The bullet ricocheting off the side of the sponge instead of off the center bothers me.
Hmm, you can't really see the last word in the first one. If I were to have a logo, I'd want my company/whatever to have it's name displayed so people remembered what it was.

Try removing the suds that cover up the main part of sponge, still have some dripping but not as much as there is now, should make it more visible. I don't really think it needs to be completely perfectly visible as it's pretty obvious it says sponge since there's a picture of one, but I guess it could do with being clearer than it is now.

I don't really like the entire red circle around the sponge

It is really too complicated for a logo (too much detail). A logo needs to be something that can be readily redrawn. It is also advisable to have "smash-able elements" in logos. i.e. bits that you can take out of the logo and use on their own with the brand still being recognizable. in your case, the sponge, the bullet or the red ring would become your elements.
Sorry, I know you put a lot of time into the detail, but after studying advertising, I have learned that the simplest logos are the most effective and that complicated logos evolve into simple ones over time.
I think the ring should be plain red and 2D instead of all detailed like that. Maybe even make the font simpler.
You could also take the suds off of the sponge. They lead your eye away from the bullet, which should not still be in its casing.

Hi all, sorry baout taking so long to get back to you busy week with work then Big Day Out (Music Fetical). I have been talking with the other two guys in the group and they both agree with the last couple of posts, though it looks pretty decent its way too complicated for a logo. On that note I'll be simplifing the entire thing, for example what I plan to do:-
- Make the ring 2D
- Simplify the sponge (less rough aroud the edges and maybe a simpler colouring style)
- Less water/suds, which will also be simplified (blue water, a few bits of plain whit suds)
And that pretty much leaves the bullet which I have no real idea on how I can improve it, possibly could simplify it by freeze framing it rather than blurring it.
Hows that sound?
Oh and to be honest this didn't take me all to long to whip up so I have no quarells with binning it and starting over, which happens to much of my work. I'll get to 2D-arizing/simplifying it. Not sure when it'll be done by, might have some other art for you all as well.
Thanks everyone for your critique and suggestions!
The sponge was great before as a sponge, but not as a logo. Also try different color combinations, red might not be the best one.

What about a sponge with a bullet-proof vest, with a crumpled bullet in the centre (if that would be possible), and 'Bullet Proof Sponge' in type below?
The original designs posted here are good, but as the guys above stated, they seemed a little too busy for a logo.
And that pretty much leaves the bullet which I have no real idea on how I can improve it, possibly could simplify it by freeze framing it rather than blurring it.
You need to take the casing off of it. After it's been fired, it's just the little tip thing, no tube.
