I've been playing in a rock band called Rocker Lips (myspace.com/rockerlips) for a while now and have heard a lot of great bands. It kind of seems like the new hip thing as of late is the retro revival, back to basics rock. Now don't get me wrong, I listen to Metal, Punk, Ska, Electronic, and just about every other type of music, but I have noticed a severe lack of rock and roll. So it's time to represent, what new or old rock bands are you into? Try to talk a little about why you like each band instead of making a big long list. Links are a plus as well.
Bands I just can't get enough of are:
Danko Jones (myspace.com/dankojones)
So much power in the simplicity of the music. Danko Jones is a three piece with great hooks and even catchier riffs. They have gotten pretty huge over and Europe and Canada (they're Canadian) but have gotten little notice from the US. They are one of my favorite bands at the moment.
Eagles of Death Metal (www.eaglesofdeathmetal.net)
A little more on the bluesy side. EODM is a side project of Queens of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme and a High School friend. It's so brilliant in it's grittiness. The songs are catchy and the lyrics are funny at times, and serious when they need to be. It's like stripped down rock with stripper/go go beats behind it.
Queens of the Stone Age (www.qotsa.com/)
What to say about QOTSA taht hasn't been said before. They are one hell of a rock band with a unique take on rhythms and lyrical content. Homme dubs the music "robot rock" which seems rather fitting given the herky jerky rythms and time signatures. One of the few original bands out there today.
Turbonegro (www.turbonegro.com/)
I've only recently gotten into these rockers from Oslo. They've been around since the 80s and are still going strong. Their music is a self defiend genre known as Death Punk, but it really reminds of some of the metal from the 80s, with some 70s rock thrown in. Their lyrics are raunchy and their lead singer is an unabashed "chubby dude." One lyrical highlight is, "you say i'm fat, but it's an optical illusion."
The Hives (www.hives.nu/)
Though they are almost more punk than rock, I really like the Hives. Their music is sort of a mash between punk and rock, and they were hailed as pioneers in the "garage rock revival" of a few years ago. Not to mention they have one of the best front men in rock right now.
Fu Manchu (www.fu-manchu.com)
Fu Manchu are another band I like quite a bit. They were hailed as pioneers of Stoner Rock, but they came out of the dissolving of a band called Kyuss (http://www.stonerrock.com/kyuss/). Josh Homme of QOTSA was also the guitarist of Kyuss and their break up lead to many great rock bands from the founding members.
I could make this list extremely long if I included all the classic rock bands i'm into. But the only one I'll mention is Motorhead (www.imotorhead.com). They have influenced everyone from Metallica to my band. Lemmy's signature bass sound and no holds barred approach to music makes him one of the most endearing front men and motorhead one the most impressive groups to play rock and roll. Lemmy has lived the life and survived to tell about it, and is still going strong which has to be some kind of anomaly/miracle.
I'm looking for other bands to be exposed to, so Expose me!

Rock is truely the greatest form of music. And although I'm not a huge rockhead, rock is my favorite genre by far. Though I like the Rock from the 80's upward, I really don't get the big deal about the old stuff like Led Zepplin and the Beatles. I really just find them more boring than anything. (Though I do have some stuff from the 70's that I like)
Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden; those are some of the "older" bands that I enjoy. They're just fast past, good lyrics, and good tunes. There's not much you can say about how you like a band other than that.
One of my favorite bands of all time though is Tool. They have kick-ass lyrics, and although they can be very slow paced sometimes, when they go fast, they do it great. I enjoy a lot of other bands better though, say Queens of the Stone Age, but Tool, and I should add A Perfect Circle, are two of the first bands I've heard when I first started to "get in" to music. It's hard to describe a song by tool, but you can probably find them on the internet somewhere.
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=13993947 , a Perfect Circle myspace page. A Perfect Circle definatley has a rider range of sound than tool, because you can find a very slow and quiet song, and then find an incredibly loud and fast song. They're very good however.

Yeah i'm also into Maiden, Priest and Sabbath, but I was leery of adding them because they are technically classified as metal. I think it's hilarious that one generation's metal is another generation's hard rock, and a gereration after that they are just rock.
Tool is also one of those bands that skirts on the edges of metal and rock, though generally I think they're considered more metal. Then again that's just the personal preference of people. When they came out they were definitely considered metal, though with their more progressive bent, I don't know where they fall anymore.

I really classify Tool as Progressive Metal or even Math Rock. They're like the Yes of our generation.
I love the Rock Music, Classic Rock and what I like to call Vintage Metal. Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Sabbath were all pioneers in metal and a lot of people look up to those guys.
I actually currently hate what people are classifying as rock these days. Like Linkin' Park. For the love of god, they are not rock music, in my opinion. I feel they are bunch of whiners rather than kick ass rockers. I even saw them in concert and I wasn't impressed.

I would consider Tool to be more like King Crimson. Yes' sound isn't quite as dark as Tool. And since I am a prog-lover I've got to tip about prog. I'm not sure at all if you'll like it, it's quite original, but you said you did like electronic.
So, I would tip some early 70's bands like Genesis (not that pop-Genesis during the 80's), as noted earlier, Yes, Jethro Tull or even Pink Floyd. The thing about prog is that it isn't simple in anyway. So it also means that many people may like it.
There are also earlier metal/hard rock that isn't quite as based on y'know, fear. Early Queen had some real though songs, amongst many is Stone Cold Crazy, wich got coverd by Metallica. So, not mainstream.

As far as prog and the founders of prog i'm pretty well versed. I also have a pretty extensive knowledge regarding classic rock. I could have made a huge assed list of all the bands that "came before" the rock revival (if that's what you want to call it) but opted instead for bands that are newer and more current.
Oh, and another band that had a huge influence that I didn't mention but am a huge fan of is Thin Lizzy. Those guys more or less pioneered the dual guitar sound, and were fronted by a black Irish bassist named Phil Lynott. Phil's bass playing is nothing short of amazing and their music is so much better than "The Boys are Back in Town." At one point during a conversation explosm's own Dave said, when asked about U2 and the Irish connection, "Fuck U2, Thin Lizzy are our ambassadors of rock."

As far as rock goes, it's only a few bands for me
I don't know if The Misfits count, as they're more punk rock, but I'm a huge fan of them.
Then there's QOTSA which I also like alot.
You could say the Load era of Metallica is rock as well, so count me in.
I'd love to play in a rock band.
Oh and, I Got Erection

Woho, I'm happy that someone knows about Classic Rock (all more seems to ignore it).
I would often say that if you like solos and longer songs that Classical Rock is better for you, since many songs of today skip the solo-part.

Chevelle: Dark guitar/bass, and a story behind every song.
The Offspring: Sometimes goofy, sometimes serious, always good. Hopefully the next album doesn't suck.
Papa Roach: High energy, awesome in concert.
O.A.R.: Good music for when you're just chilling, and their best stuff is live.
p.s. How are we defining "rock"? Is punk, alternative, emo, etc. included?
Hats of!
01-22-2008, 3:50 PM
Antisaint, rock is allways punk, alternativ, emo, indie, glam, prog, 'n' roll, metal etc. Sometimes an artist can be called to play rock, but considering the first post, it doesn't seems like that.
O.A.R
I hate that band. I saw them once and it was a good show and then I saw them again and after four CDs or whatever, it was the same damn show. And that song "Crazy Game of Poker" is the exact same chords as "No Woman, No Cry." There are other examples, but I'm just not a fan. And I really don't think they're a rock band. They're more along the lines of hippie/stoner/college music.

I wouldn't call them stoner music. Sublime is stoner music. And they've had various guests from The Wailers (Bob Marley's band) play with them while on tour.
Anyways, if we're including all kinds of rock, I'll throw in:
Against Me!
The Clash
Rise Against
Sum 41
Sublime
30 Seconds to Mars
Foo Fighters
Audioslave
Dropkick Murphys
Jimmy Eat World
Motion City Soundtrack
The Mars Volta

Did you even bother reading the original post, or checking out any of the links of the bands I gave as examples? Not one of the groups you listed is a rock band in that sense except maybe the Foo Fights and/or Audioslave, and even still I wouldn't really put them in the same category as the groups I'm talking about. I'm not trying to say that you have bad taste in music, and I don't want this to turn into an "emo sucks, ___ is better!" type of flame war thread. I am simply attempting to clarify what this thread is about without getting too hung up on labels.
That said, I don't really consider punk, emo, alternative, or metal to be rock music. They may have roots in Rock and Roll, but they aren't really rock which is why they have their own genre names. The music I am talking about are the bands that are going back to a more southern and/or classic rock sound. Think Kings of Leon (www.kingsofleon.com), Wolfmother (www.wolfmother.com), The White Stripes (www.whitestripes.com), Supagroup (www.supagroup.com), the Bronx (http://www.thebronxxx.com/), or American Bang (www.americanbangrock.com) (or any of the bands I listed before). The Misfits are another one of those groups that border punk and rock and roll but can't be easily pegged as either, so it works in either genre.
Feel free to list your favorite traditional classic rock/rock groups. As stated before, provide a link and tell a little bit about why you like them or what makes them good, I don't care for long lists of groups.

Rock isnt as small of a gender as some may think.:flame:
The most important bands in rock history are the ones who change the way rock sounds. Several old rock bands that are VITAL include
Led Zeppelin(of course)
Pink Floyd(really gave us some weird shit)
Mearl Haggard (believe it or not a COUNTRY singer invented loud concerts!)
Buddy Hollie, Howlin Wolf,Muddy waters and other famous jazz singers.
Rock is essenstially made of the most popular music types to appeal to a larger group.
Wolfmother (www.wolfmother.com)
I'm with ya there. Wolfmother has definitley brought back that 'classic rock' feel. When I'm listening to some of their songs, "Love Train" in particular, I can't help but realize how they've been influenced by Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple. And it's great to see them actually pursue that kind of sound in todays world.
Also, I'm a fans of The Hives myself. :hmm:
Really, the Strokes are about as "rock" as you can get, and I'm surprised no one has mentioned them yet.
http://www.myspace.com/thestrokes
The guitar riffs are generally really simple to play, but they sound great. I'm sure lots of you are familiar with "Reptilia" which was in Rock Band and Guitar Hero. :V
I also like how the lead vocalist's voice is very baritone. :fmita:

Nothin' like a bit of rock to wake you up in the morning - and in my case anyone within a 50ft radius (Sub/amp in my car)
Have to list the classics such as;
Deep purple, Metallica, Pantera, Guns n Roses, Lynyrd Skynyrd and of course Zeppelin
I chose Lynyrd Skynyrd's "freebird" to play at my dads funeral as the lyrics are beautiful and true to the situation. It was quite amusing to see so many people all there to honour and remember my dad all fighting the urge to nod their heads to the song.
I'm trapped in the past a bit with my other musical tastes, which don't really classify as rock I suppose but I'll list them anyway
Slipknot - have seen them 6 times, and still love them as much as I ever did.
Nirvana, Foos, AFI, Offspring, Saliva, Soil, Artic Monkeys, Hard-Fi, Brand New, QOTSA, some Korn, NIN, Jimmy eat world Blink 182 and most other mainstream stuff from the '90s :]
I really have no idea about the newer stuff thats out - like MCR etc. With my rock /metal / alt I'm very much in the past, as I have a new love of speed garage and bassline :| I'm the chavviest alternate person I know. Oh well, it's about variation isn't it!

You should check out Clutch if you haven't. I first heard of them when the singer Neil Fallon did guest vocals on Mastodons "Blood and Thunder". They have a kind of blues-rock sound.

I just recently started listening to "newer" bands. By newer I mean something other than classic rock. I really like The Strokes and Queens of the Stone Age, so I'm glad someone mentioned them. They really invoke this feeling that rock is supposed to make you feel, that kick ass, turn up the volume, drive fast, sentiment.
Radiohead has also been frequenting my media player, though I'm not sure what musical genre you would classify them under. I guess according to Android's definition they aren't really rock, but then again there were plenty of bands in the past that were unconventional yet still rock (Pink Floyd comes to mind). Kid A and OK Computer are my favorite albumns.
I'm really into classic rock more than anything. Pink Floyd tops my list for a couple of reasons. The Wall was the first music I remember listening to when I was a kid. That was when my parents record player still worked, and we would sit on the floor (mom, dad, and myself) and listen to it straight through. It's one of my earlier memories, so I feel nostalgic when I hear The Wall, but my favorite is Animals, hands down. I also really like most of Roger Waters and David Gilmour's solo stuff. I'm just really not into Syd Barrett stuff.
Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple are great too, and I'm very partial to The Who as well. Sorry for the lengthy post.

Bang Camaro (http://www.myspace.com/bangcamaro) consider themselves a throwback to the heyday of rock n' roll, and as such have an interesting concept. Their songs don't have verses, and very often they don't even have things like bridges or breaks. They use a choir-style vocal style, with up to 15 vocalists at once. Usually their songs are a choir-sung chorus and several VERY well done guitar solos thrown together. Their song Pleasure (Pleasure) takes the main riff straight from Photograph by Def Leppard though. I heard about them through Guitar Hero, but I really like them.
EDIT: Also, Dream Theater (http://www.myspace.com/dreamtheater). Myspace page lists them as Prog Metal, but I think they sound a lot more like Prog Rock than metal. Best progressive band ever? It's quite possible. John Petrucci is fucking legend on the guitar.
Really, the Strokes are about as "rock" as you can get, and I'm surprised no one has mentioned them yet.
My favorite song by them is "Juicebox". But even though I listen to them, they do sound kinda soft to me. Like alot of their songs have the same upbeat, but at the same time love song feel about them.
EDIT:
Paranoid Android and OK Computer are my favorite albums.
Paranoid Android was a song OFF of Ok Computer; not an album itself. :ahe:

QOTSA
RHCP

I think this thread is slowly getting derailed. I think Android intended for us to talk about old Rock, and the Rock Revivalists (The Hives, The Strokes, etc..etc.) It kinda just looks like we're naming bands we like, like Modest Mouse and Pantera. :indiff:

There is also a person with "Knights of Cyndonia" as his screen name and he has an image with the name "MUSE" as his signature.

My alltime fav band is Tool. Just can't get enough of them. Their music is just so... *sigh*
I'm getting all emotional here...
Well, I heard about a new band like 2 months ago, called 'Alter Bridge'. Downloaded it, loved it. Awesome guitar-shit and the singer is really good.
My fav metal band must be Iron Maiden of Lamb of God. Tho I like Cradle of Filth, but it's a pity that 90% of the people who know them, just hates them. Don't understand it, don't want to.

I personally don't like Cradle of Filth, but they were playing a festival I was at so I went to see them as they're meant to put on a good show. They were absolutely horrendous. Danny Filth is a terrible frontman, and his live vocals are just awful. The show wasn't that good either, all they had was a woman swinging about on a rope and another woman who put a chainsaw to her metal plated pussy to create some sparks - it was the middle of the day and roasting hot so the effect of that was totally lost, maybe it would have been better at night. In essence, it was rubbish.

Alter Bridge are Creed with a different lead singer. That's not to say they are bad though, because they actually kick serious ass. Scott Stapp was holding Creed back as musicians, imo.
Some of the best Australian rock is from early Silverchair. Albums such as Frogstomp, Neon ballroom and Freak show are great. Don't listen to their later stuff though if you're a fan of rock, it goes rather "poppy" after that. Also check out Cold Chisel, Jimmy Barnes' band from the late 70s and early 80s.
