Good for you on expanding your musical tastes.
First if you like you can start off with http://www.music-map.com/. How that works is you type in a band/artist you like and according to that it finds other bands and artists similar to yours and arranges them on the screen like a mind map. Very cool.
Have a band picked that looks interesting but can't decide whether you like them/haven't heard anything by them? Try http://www.seeqpod.com/ (originally posted by Switch) or http://www.musgle.com/. Seeqpod works by typing in the band name and clicking search, where it finds mp3's online for you to stream. I think there's a way you can download them, but I haven't figured out how/never really bothered. Musgle works exactly like Google. Type in a band name, and it finds mp3's of them you can listen to online/download. Pretty handy.
Finally if you have that song stuck in your head, but can't remember the name try http://findmeatune.com/. Just type in any song lyrics you remember and it should give you a name. It hasn't been very reliable for me, but some of you might have better luck.
I hope this helps, if any of you have any other suggestions, post them up. I'll edit them into this post. A mod might even sticky it?
Last.FM (http://www.last.fm/). Works kind of like a radio station. Type in a band you like and it finds similar artists on certain stations for you to listen to. If you want to use it you need to sign up and download the software, but it doesn't take that long. Thanks Aoife.
Pandora.com (http://www.pandora.com/). Like Last.FM only it will not work for you if you are outside of the United States. Thanks Tempest.
Allmusic.com (http://www.allmusic.com/) for information etc. Thanks Twiggz.
Owlmusicsearch.com (http://www.owlmusicsearch.com/) helps you to literally find music that sounds like yours. Thanks Tempest.
Songtapper.com (http://www.songtapper.com/) works the same as FindMeATune. Thanks Gizza.
PureVolume.com (http://www.purevolume.com/) hosts a load of signed and unsigned bands for you to listen to. Thanks Beermonster.
Sectionz.com (http://www.sectionz.com/) to listen and download free electronic songs. Beatport.com (http://www.beatport.com/) acts more like a directory for finding electronic artists, downloads are not free. Thanks Exetra.
ProjectPlaylist.com (http://www.projectplaylist.com/) is the same thing as Seeqpod. Thanks Matt.
Songza.com (http://www.songza.com/) works the same way as Project Playlist and Seeqpod do and it can find covers, live tracks etc.
Wiki. (http://www.wikipedia.org/) Look up your favourite bands and artists and see who they are connected to and what bands are similar/in the same genre. Thanks Raxo.
Imeem.com (http://www.imeem.com/) Used for streaming and downloading mp3s, but you need to make an account. Making one is very simple though.
Midomi.com (http://www.midomi.com/) Find songs you are looking for by humming the melody or singing the lyrics into a microphone. Works very well. Thanks Chocoholic.
Did it leak.com (http://diditleak.co.uk/) Find out when albums have been leaked. I check this site almost daily and it has been very handy for me. Thanks Tweek.
Musicovery.com (http://musicovery.com/index3.php?ct=zz) A visual radio station where you can pick genres, years and even the moods of the songs. Pretty nifty. Thanks BlackKohm.
Mog.com (http://mog.com/) Like Last.FM but has a really great user community and can be used for discussing music as well as listening to it. Thanks Tunacake.
Metal archives.com (http://metal-archives.com/) The name pretty much explains it. It's an archive of metal. Thanks The Omnipotent I Can't Read The Rest Of Your Name.
Live plasma.com (http://www.liveplasma.com/) It's a lot like music map and you can search for movies as well as music.
Filter music.net (http://www.filtermusic.net/) A list of internet radio stations that specialise in a plethora of different genres.

Pandora.com runs what they call the "Music Genome Project" (http://www.pandora.com/)
It works almost exactly like your description of music-map.com, only it is an online radio station. You enter a band or a song name that you like, and it will find all sorts of music that's a lot like that and play it for you. You can give a song a thumbs up to say you liked it, or a thumbs down, in which case the station will never play that song again. It allows you to create however many stations you want, but you can only skip a certain number of songs per hour, I believe it was. One small downside to a very good site.

Pandora sounds a lot like Last.FM (http://www.last.fm/). It works on the same premise of 'radio stations' and such, I have it myself and it is very cool but you need to sign up and download software for it.
Edit: I just clicked the Pandora link and it won't let me in because I'm outside of the US. :(
LastFM (http://www.last.fm/). It's like Pandora but it's works in more places in Europe. Last time I checked Pandora it only worked in the US.
It's free, but to listen to 'favourites' that you tag as they play, you have to pay for a membership. If I remember correctly..
Tempest

That's weird, I didn't know it didn't work outside of the US. :ahe: Anyway, Pandora and LastFM are pretty similar, you just don't have to download anything for Pandora.
Here's an interesting one, OWL Music Search (http://www.owlmusicsearch.com/) helps you LITERALLY find music that sounds like yours. It loads a java applet, and you click a button to load an MP3 from your PC. When it is loaded, you play it until you get to a part of the song you really like, then you hit search. It analyzes the song and finds songs that literally sound similar to it, and pop them up for you to explore. It's interesting, to say the least.

Pure Volume (http://www.purevolume.com) is a good site, they host both signed and unsigned artists for you to listen to. It's free to use and most of the bands on it hover around the rock/alternative/metal side of things, but not all - they have over 400,000 bands on there.

Lots of free electronic music on www.sectionz.com (http://www.sectionz.com). some of it is shitty and amateur but at the same time there's a lot of really amazing musicians and producers around there too (same would go for sites like purevolume anyway).

Haha. I typed bands into music map, cool site by the way, and it spat out all the other bands I have I thought it was accurate.
That music map helped me find some new rappers to listen to and I actually like them. That thing is petty cool.

blah blah blah i don't like MCR
Yeah, so we should totally shut down an entire website with thousands of bands from every genre imaginable because a single band sucks got famous. Think about what you're saying before you type it.
That was beermonster256 who made that stupid generalization not buckfan (not that it really matters)
Yeah that is something pretty dumb to say because it's obvious not all bands on there are like MCR. I also think it was only a terrible attempt at a joke on his part

Edited. In any case "I don't like Band X" posts are not at all relevant to the topic at hand.
Another great website to find Electronic music is Beatport (http://www.beatport.com). Downloads are not for free but it's a great directory for looking up artists and they hold competitions and promos for producers/musicians and listeners alike.

All music-map does is look for bands/artists in the same genre.....I think. Owlmusicsearch is pretty neat but it hasn't worked for me yet. As for FindMeATune, you're better off just Googling the lyrics.

Another good way to find music is through www.Wikipedia.org . There just look for your favorite and artists and see who they have connections with or who is in a similar genre. There are a lot of artists that I have found through Wikipedia.
Doesn't sound like much but a lot can be discovered through it.

Midomi (http://midomi.com) is useful for finding songs you already know but don't know the name of. You need a microphone though. Basically you either hum or sing the song (humming if you just know the melody but no lyrics) and it matches it up to songs for you. I tested a couple of songs and just about all but 1 worked.
It's also a good source of entertainment. People post themselves singing the songs which helps find the actual song. My favorites are the 10 year old kids rapping to Snoop Dogg songs.

We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for listeners located outside of the U.S. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative.

Musicovery.com is another site,
I wouldn't really recommend it over anything already posted, but just so you have the option
It's like a visual radio station where you choose the song to follow, and can sort them out based on Dark vs Positive tones, or Energetic vs Calm ones, or any mixture thereof.

Check out The Hype Machine (http://hypem.com), wich bascially gathers music from hundreds of MP3 music blogs all around the world. It's a fun thing and I've discovered a lot of artists through it.
[..]The Hype Machine tracks a variety of MP3 blogs. If a post contains MP3 links, it adds those links to its database and displays them on the front page.
Those tracks are NOT available for download, but you can preview them via the play buttons that are next to each track.
The blog that posted a particular track is identified under every track by name so you can read more about why they posted it.
You can purchase CDs and individual tracks by using the "amazon" and "itunes" links that appear next to most tracks. Each purchase you make via the Amazon and iTunes links supports both the artists and the Hype Machine.[..]

Can we add regular internet radio stations, too?
SomaFM (http://somafm.com/) has a handful of radio stations, and a lot of them broadcast really cool, ambient music. It's not the type of stuff you'd listen to directly, but it makes kickass background noise when you're actively doing something else. I listen to Secret Agent and Space Station when I'm drawing in my sketchbook or playing CS:S and TF2. I want to check out the rest of the stations too, as they all sound really cool. I even donated a few bucks to the site.

well now there is genius on iTunes.
And nothing can beat that because iTunes has a huge database of music, and what people have bought what.
It works really well, better than last.fm or pandora (although pandora is pretty cool).
Its not a site, but still SoulSeek is a good music sharing software that has LOTS of music you wouldn't find in Limewire or Ares. www.slsknet.org is the site, up to now it has worked pretty fine for me, I download mostly Symphonic Metal, Death Metal and some Punk. Progarchives (www.progarchives.com)
It's time this link is added. Progarchives is as it sounds, an archive of progressive rock and metal. Symphonic, Space, Experimental, Post Rock. All genres is represented.
In the site you'll find old bands such as Genesis, Gentle Giant, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Yes, Uriah Heep, and Rush. But also new bands such as Dream Theatre, The Mars Volta, Tool, Muse, Radiohead and Opeth.
If you want you can also read about prog-related music from progrockers point of view. How about getting to know the experimental side of Queen, The Who or Deep Purple?

I've build up my entire collection of music through wikipedia and progarchives. Wikipedia for rock in general and progarchives for progressive rock.
Haha, that's how I did too. The Wikipedia part at least. For me, if a band did not have a page on wikipedia, the band was not worth listening to.

There's iLike as well. (http://ilike.com/), which is similar to the likes of Last.fm. Good for searching similar bands and whatnot.

Music map - that's simply amazing, thank you so much ^^
I focus on using http://jango.com/ - it's like Last.FM but not (it's much better, imo) - you can interact with users from all around the world, create your very own 'radio'stations, rate songs, etc.
Other bands were brought to me by SoundChecks of 'RockSound' magazine and sometimes 'Kerrang!' (but only on rare ocassions)

Rock the Dash is an easy way to find new artists, if you're looking for the undiscovered variety. found a couple keepers myself there.

The music map is fun to look at when I type a band's name. I never knew there was such thing as a music map until I found this thread. It's so cool!

Wow, thanks for sharing those lists, I'm also sick and tired of hearing all these music in my media player. Time to hear now cool songs and download more of new songs.

Pretty much an awesome site where you register and heart songs you like. After you heart enough and listen to a bunch it will give you a page of recommended songs. Even has achievements and you can listen to certain songs as many times as you like.

Pandora Radio pretty much is all I need for music.
I agree. That is all I listen to now.
But I am looking for some new stuff. I like Indie stuff like Modest Mouse, The Shins, Death Cab for Cutie - that kind of stuff. Any recommendations?

i cant find ALOT of bands i listen to on last.fm or pandora (or any other site i have seen here really) the best way i find music is to go to youtube and find a video of a song you like and just follow the vid links around untill you find something you like. you can do the same with myspace, go to a bands site and try thier friends (bands obviously). i have found hundreds of great bands like that.
