Think someone is awesome but doesn't get the credit he or she or they deserve? State your claim here. Provide an example if you can.

Solo Act:
I really really like Warren Zevon. Some people know him as the guy that did "Werewolf in London," but he albums upon albums of work and some of them are better than anything I've heard.

My favorite song of his is "Lawyers, Guns and Money."

It's also his birthday.

Lawyers, Guns and Money. Acoustic. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5puAN1PGQw)

Band:
Crash Test Dummies. They did that really odd song "Mmm mmm mmm mmm" but the entire album is really well written and well produced. The guy's voice has a smoothness about it. They had like two other albums after their first release and they both didn't do as well. Bummer.

Pretty much a one hit wonder with "Better Days", but most of the album (they only made one, that I know of) is good.

Ozomatli

They're a 10 piece band that plays music that ranges from jazz to cumbia to hip hop. They have great variety in both the singers and the types of instruments they use. They really don't get too much credit except in the West Coast where they're from. They're music is easy to listen to and offers political messages, but there is also those party songs that are meant for you to chill out to.

Ya Viene El Sol (http://youtube.com/watch?v=7YHbE70S828) (spanish)

Cumbia De Los Muertos (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ggBJZmJyIis) (spanish)

Saturday Night (http://youtube.com/watch?v=J-A_1CnjwaI&feature=related) (English)

These are great definately check them out.

Both of the bands mentioned in the previous posts, Ozomatli and Citizen King, are most definitely awesome! I started listening to Ozomatli after I heard Saturday Night, and I went out and bought the album. Great composers.

Citizen King did in fact only release one album, and I've yet to find a good torrent for it.

I think that the Grape Digging Sharon Fruits (http://www.myspace.com/grapediggers) are in a way under rated. They do simple music, but throw it together in such a neat way while still having fun with it. It's a neat way to work a band.

They come from Iceland and make pretty cool music with a big range of instruments. Very relaxing, ideal to listen to when you feel in the reflexive mood. The best part is not understanding anything of what they sing, as this forces you to focus in the music.

Brilliant shout on Warren Zevon - Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner is one of the best stories ever told.

Other than that, Satanic Surfers and The Lawrence Arms for Punk bands and Modest Mouse for indie. My peers haven't heard of any of them. Dickholes.

They're from Halifax, Nova Scotia and they play this awesome mix of indie and rock. You may have heard their song "Weighty Ghost" on the radio. If you don't like it, you might still like the rest of their album. All the other songs on it are in a totally different style.

As The Poets Affirm (http://www.myspace.com/asthepoetsaffirm)

Canadian independent band from Ottawa, Ontario, formed in 2001. The band began as a three-piece acoustic project, and later evolved into a seven-member line-up experimenting with jazz, classical and electronica.

The only record I like of theirs is:
I Want to Tell My Heart to You, But I Cannot Say English

So, yeah.

They may have been Mtv artist of the week once but still no one really knows them around here.
If there was one song you needed to hear by them, it would be White people for peace.

Daft Punk

If you know the song "stronger" by Kanye West know that Daft punk really created it. and the theme to "touch it" by Busta Rhymes. They are two dudes who wear robot costumes and are musical geniuses.

Explosions in the Sky

An instrumental band formed in Austin, TX. I have tried getting some people to listen to them, and usually the response I get is "when does the singing come in" People don't really give instrumental bands a chance anymore, which is sad, because they are usually the ones that put the most feeling into the music they create.

Daft Punk is famous for "One More Time" except noone thinks "They sound good, Imma listen to them". Its more along the lines of "They sound good, Imma go listen to Rihanna, because I'm cool".

Music makes my pants sad.

Most good bands are under rated in Australia, because... I have no idea why actually. So I'm going to blame it on MTV for showing Silverchair 18 times in a row.

Isn't Wolfmother a bunch of Aussies? And so is AC/DC. Those bands seem to be doing pretty well.

I really liked Silverchair's first CD and I saw them live when they opened for Cake. They did this weird improve song and the entire concert was odd.

I was actually just listening to them. Definitely underrated. Although, it makes me angry that their song 'South Union' isn't longer.

Riverdales. (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=99632673) One of my favorite bands. My Dad actually got me into them when I was younger. If you like The Ramones, you'll like the Riverdales. Same type of sound.

Saliva. (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=3223266) They came out with the song 'Your Disease' years ago, and pretty much disappeared after that cd. I had forgotten about them until I was going through my cd book.

The Postal Service. (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=3227563) They're one of those bands that are awesome to just chill out to, or jam out to. So good!

If you've heard of them then you probably know the infamous "London Underground" song. This duo is, as they say, "Two doctors at a piano singing smutty songs...". They sing parodies of well known songs, mainly medical, but every song still has a laugh factor.

P.O.D.
Sure, everyone knows "Youth of the Nation" "Alive" and "Boom". The fact is, they are an extremely talented group with a wide range of sound (while still maintaining their unique sound). I highly recommend the songs "Set Your Eyes to Zion" and "Roots in Stereo". The thing about P.O.D. is that they got shoved into the same category as Limp Bizkit, the whole "rap-rock" thing. P.O.D. is much more talented than that though.

As a genre I think Ska is very very under rated. The majority of the people don't even know what the hell ska is let alone what ska bands are out there.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that they're underrated as far as talent goes. Sure everyone knows them and they've had great success. I don't deny that. But the majority of their "fans" are people who saw a 30 second clip of Alive on TRL. Because of that they got a lot of haters and a lot of people wrote them off as your typical mtv band.

Ulver: It's amazing how a black metal band from Norway can do a complete 180-turn and turn into an awesome electronic/ambient/avant-garde band. Definitely worth checking their recent albums like Shadows of the Sun and Blood Inside. You don't even need to be a metalhead to enjoy them because there's not at least one ounce of metal in them.

Rodrigo y Gabriela: Any Irish/British members of the forum may have heard of them, but I don't think they've really broken outside of Europe. They're just 2 guitarists form Mexico, who were in a heavy metal band there. They left Mexico for Europe, and have recorded a couple of albums with acoustic versions of songs by Metallica et al. They do have loads of original material, and are very very talented.

Another band I kinda got hooked on (any of the SA crowd might be able to correct me if I go wrong here) is Henry Ate (now defunct I think, but material is still available.) Their material is acoustic, the lyrics are phenomenal, I think, and they were based in South Africa, as far as I'm aware. More info: www.henryate.com

Queen Adreena, and basically everything involving Katiejane Garside or her little sis, Melanie Garside, aka Maple Bee; that means a lot of stuff.

Katiejane:
Daisy Chainsaw
Queen Adreena
Solo project, album called Lalleshwari; Lullabies in a Glass Wilderness
Ruby Throat

Maple Bee:
Tabitha Zu
Vertigo Angels
Maple Bee
Huski
Mediaeval Baebes

And the guitarist for Daisy Chainsaw and Queen Adreena, Crispin Gray, was also in the band The Dogbones.

So if you like music, check out all of these; you're bound to like something from this vast list.

There are so many bands that are underrated or just plain unknown, so making a thread about them is pretty much asking people to post names of bands no one know about. And technically there aren't really any bands that are actually underrated, they are either unknown or not really liked. Which means that they are either a new band, a band that doesn't want to get into the big times or a band that isn't actually very good but some people think that they rock for some reason.

Another band I was reminded of about 24 hours ago is Cake. They're kind of like a ska rock band (they sound nothing like Less Than Jake, in case anyone's wondering). They're also a very topical band - they use their website to highlight current events/issues almost as much as they use it for their own promotion!! I would recommend looking for 'Going The Distance', 'Comfort Eagle', or 'Short Skirt, Long Jacket' on whatever medium you use to evaluate new music.

Oh, Sleeper is a new artist, just signed to Solid State Records, and released their first album, "When I Am God". It's a real decent album, but it's a little rough around the edges.

He Is Legend has been making good progress spreading their name. But I'd like to see them a bit more known. Schuylar Croom has a great vocal change over the "I Am Hollywood" to "Suck Out The Poison" album transition.

As far as in the US, The Cat Empire is hugely underrated. I know they're at least somewhat popular in other placed, but not so much in the US. Or at least in the area around me. They're a great, fun band, and it seems like they have a lot of fun.

Kyuss

The band was started by Josh Homme (of QOTSA) in 1988 when he was 15. They pioneered what is known as "desert" or "stoner" rock. This band was one of the first to tune down to drop C, a style later emulated by countless "Nu-Metal" groups, and the vocalist's voice has been emulated by many singers. Their music has a Sabbathy/Tool type sound at times and is heavy without being abrasive.

The breakup of this band also led to several awesome rock bands like Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal, Fu Manchu, and Brant Bjork and the Bros.

Regina Spektor - Most people that I've seem listen to one of her songs for the first time always knocks it down, and say it's annoying and change it right away, though later they go back to the song because it's some of the catchiest music ever.

Bright Eyes - Many people i know think they're whiny and immature, but personally i think Connor is a great writer and singer.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - People who hate ska obviously dislike them, but many people who love ska also say they're terrible, which i think is a huge overstatement, while they do have a few bad cd's, they also have a lot of really good ones.

PlayRadioPlay! -Yes it is one word with an exclamation mark, most people turn it off figuring it's just techno or something, but they have a few of the catchiest songs ever, it's amazing that it's a one man band.

And finally,

The Urge - Many people who like ska thinks the music is too "hard," and people who like harder music thinks they're too "ska." The truth is some songs are a mix of both, but some songs are just one or the other. I personally like the ska much more.

Obviously you can disagree with much of this, go right ahead, please just don't be rude about it.

I think John Paul Jones is extremley underrated; The bassist for one of the biggest rock bands ever, Led Zeppelin. Sure, many music elitist's cite him as a skilled artist, but everyday people (and even some professionals) over look the amazing talent he has. Most people, when they think of Zeppelin, think of Bonham or Page, being the pioneers they were in their field. But Jones was maybe the most musically skilled out of them all. Aside from bass, he plays guitar guitar, koto, lap steel guitars, autoharp, ukulele, sitar, and cello. He is also a conducter of orchestra's, like just recently he conducted the orchestra that played with the Foo Fighters at the Grammy's. Go ask a bassist in a local band and just ask him to try and play a Led Zeppelin song, most likely he's not gonna be able to do it smoothly.

The talk of John Paul Jones' multiple talents made me think of one. Flava Flav. Sure, everyone now knows him from his stupid show, even if they don't remember him from his days with Public Enemy. But even a lot of people who know Public Enemy don't realize that about the only reason they kept his crazy ass in the group is because he can play something like 9 instruments. Under all the crazy weirdness the guy actually had some real talent. Not to say that he should be considered some amazing musician, but I don't think most people realize he can do anything but act nuts and wear a clock.

Yeah, Shagg, I think your comment more aptly proves how untalented majority of bassists of today are, as opposed to how talented JPJ was. Granted, he was good, but not worthy of the praise you're giving him. (for his bass skills, I mean, his multi instrumentation deserves much praise).

The guitar lines in Led Zeppelin are harder for a guitarist to play, than the basslines are for a bassist to play. Honestly, get a guitarist to play the bass lines, they'd have not a lot of trouble. So I don't see how the bass lines are as difficult as you make out.

Look 'em up. They're amazing. Their lead singer recently departed from the band, which is a real shame because he was a true artist with a beautiful voice and a real talent for lyricism.

I had the extreme privelage of seeing Ozomatli when they opened for a pre-suck Hoobastank. That was the first live show I ever went to and definitely the best. Even beating out when I saw Tool, despite the fact that Tool has been one of my favorite bands for a long time. It was just a really fresh show, and was very amazing to a 13 year old me who had a love for music, but didn't know what to do with it.

These guys are such a great band. I don't think i've yet to hear one song by them that I didn't like. Over in Europe they are huge, but in the U.S. they are relatively unknown.I've seen them at Werchter festival two years ago, they were great :)

I think they're big in the UK, but over here I think they're relatively unknown. Tell me if I'm wrong.Yeah too bad they're unknown because they're great. Also an amazing live band.

I actually saw them live and accidentally caught a guitar pick. With my face.

The Darkness were just a "local" band that overachieved for a short while cos no-one else plays that British style of stadium rock any more. They got found out, basically! And the press hyped them up to fuck.

Hey guys, unheard of =/= underrated.

All of you are just flexing your "I've heard of this band and you haven't so that makes me a fucking badass" muscles and just because a band has done well doesn't make them underrated.

Absolutely fucking right.

None of these bands are under-rated, they are completely unknown, so stop posting this bullshit.

An underrated band is The Clash!

The Clash were one of the most excitingly explosive bands in rock history, no fucking doubt about it. Their music was not about all this heart bleeding, wrist cutting, life ending bullshit that kids have grown to "appreciate" these days, The Clash mixed their overtly political minds into their lyrics, tackling issues such as racism, social repression, and... of course.... sex.

But how often do you hear about The Clash? Maybe once a month at best. Thats because all these faggot bands of this decade have ruined true fucking music, and the real rock & roll bands are buried in the shit of it all.

Saxon are very underrated. They seem to be the only NWOBHM band that nobody hears of these days. Usually it's all Maiden this Priest that, now don't get me wrong, theyr'e both great bands, but Saxon are just as great and should be more well known.

I saw Saxon back in the day. Great band live, but their music has dated pretty badly (be honest).

The Clash, underrated?? Are you sure?? Overrated if anything. Don't get me wrong, great band and I would have loved to have seen 'em play. But come on. The music mags hardly shut up about them! You only hear about them once a month or so?? Pretty fucking good for a band that split up 20-odd years ago wouldn't you say?

Are you kidding? Look at Hendrix, the Ramones, the 'Stones, the Doors!!!

All of these bands have been accredited for their amazing music for even longer, multiple times a day, everyday. People walk through my school wearing all these shirts of bands, but when I wore my Clash shirt, I got asked multiple times who The Clash are!!!

I'm sorry but the publics perspective on what "good" music is has been so skewered I refuse to even have conversations with most of those in my class.:finger:

Skindred are a uk band that seem to be quite underrated. They've supported the likes of Korn yes still don't seem have a large following. Although this has changed a bit with the release of their second album. Not sure how well known they are in the US, I know they've recently done a tour there

Skindred are a brilliant band, original as well. I wish they'd do another album.
