•The game has now essentially been completed. Rockstar are just polishing the game and dealing with bugs, glitches and minor things.
•The Liberty City map was shown briefly during the demo. Kikizo describe it as containing a large island in the middle (Algonquin) with a similarly sized island to the left (Alderney) and two islands to the right - a small one (Bohan) up north with Broker and Dukes underneath.
•Rockstar also commented on the map found in Trailer 3 by our forum member Bluespot. "My God!" was their reaction. In other words, yes, it is indeed the map. Well done to Bluespot!
•Liberty City will contain a subway system, which Niko is able to use.
•The system covers - at the very least - Broker and Algonquin, but we aren't sure about the other areas yet.
•A speedboat journey around (approximately) half of Algonquin lasted 5 real-world minutes.
•In terms of camera views, all the traditional views are still there, and there will now also be a dashboard view.
•During the demo, they passed a restaurant called "Poop Deck," where they met with Francis McGreary. Other places mentioned are Oneida Avenue, 99 Long Road (Broker), a bar called Perestroika, South Parkway, Franklyn Street Westbank, and Albannay.
•Three missions were previewed during the demonstration. The first one was "Search and Delete," followed by "Deconstruction for Beginners" and then "Truck Hustle". A new character called Playboy X is introduced by Elizabeta (a mutual friend) during the second mission. Playboy X lives in a mansion, and eventually provides missions for Niko. A second character called Dwayne Ford is introduced, who just got out of prison. He taught Playboy X "everything he knows," apparently. In the third mission, two characters called Ray and Bell are introduced. They are from the mafia, and are trying to help Niko find someone, but want some favours done in return.
•The character Brucie is introduced to Niko by his cousin Roman. Brucie runs a garage just around the corner from Roman's taxi depot in Broker.
Characters often look different each time you see them instead of perpetually wearing the same clothes like in previous GTAs.
•The red and blue search radius on the radar is centred around the point where the crime was committed, and your last known whereabouts.
•Every police car in Liberty City has an on-board computer, on which you can access the police database files for anybody who's got a criminal record, or any other details that the police are aware of.
•You can smash your own car window to enable you to shoot from it; you can free-aim outside of your window using the right analogue.
Liberty City has one airport, based on JFK, called Francis International Airport (yes, it's the same name given to the airport in GTA3). It is located in on the East of the city.
•Progress is automatically saved after completing a mission. There are also safe houses dotted around the city, which you can save at any time.
•In this demo, the cell network is called Badger, whereas in the last demo it was called Whiz.
•Building and maintaining relationships with characters is important.
•During the preview, Jacob comes to meet you rather than vice versa. This is only possible once your friendship with Jacob has developed to a certain stage. Relationships can be damaged if you (for example) fail to turn up for meetings, or snub the character too many times. Maintaining good relationships with characters provides benefits.
•Pool, eating, darts, drinking and bowling are just some of the activities you can do with your friends to maintain relationships. The cellphone is used to access these activities via a menu. If you go for a drink and drink too much, Niko will get drunk. When this happens, the radar reads "You are drunk. Your vision is blurred." and the camera begins to shake, which makes driving difficult.
•There is a radio station called IF99.
•The game clock is no longer one minute = one hour. It is now two minutes = one hour. So days now last longer.
•Niko receives phone calls from people throughout the game. If someone really wants to get in touch with you about an important issue, they will keep on phoning.
•The new targetting system was described. There are eight purple segments in the target circle that make up someone's health, which you get when you're locked on - during free aiming you don't get the indicator.
•Expensive cars have better GPS systems than poorer ones. The one they enter during the preview session "talks us through the streets!"
•The cellphone can be used to listen to radio stations, so now you can listen to music at any time.
•The GTA 4 weather system does not feature seasons, and there is no snow.
Take 2 also announced in a press release on the 24th that the game will be in stores worldwide on April 29, 2008 for both consoles. Still no word on a PC port, sadly.
If anyone has any details they want added to this post, tell me.
The friend relationship and cellphone sound very interesting. I wounder how all of this will turn out

I do like the sound of the phone, especially being able to use radio on foot, but I really hope they've improved on the girlfriend system in San Andreas. It wasn't fun having a girl call you in the middle of a big fight and telling you to come visit her.

Oh yea, the girlfriend system in San Andrea's wasn't that great. But Is there something about a girlfriend system in GTA4? I must of missed it. And I love the fact you can get drunk haha.

Just reading about alot of these things, I do trust it will be majorly better than San Andreas. I like the fact that days will last longer, and that pedestrians will actually have different costumes each time you see them. From what I've seen of the city I can tell it's just going to be awesome. The game takes place in the present time, correct?

Dam no WII or PS2 release. Oh well. Looks like a great game and if I ever get a PS3 or Xbox 360 i'm bound to get it. That pedestrian thing sounds great too.

There is, I think it was the IGN review where I read it, it's done online apparently, because the game has it's own little internet with a dating site.

Wow, nice, will have to wait for the pc version though. I'm actually glad they won't be making one for the WII.

The Wii could never support it, the hardware isn't anywhere near as powerful as either the X360 or the PS3.
Yeah but they've cropped the graphics horribly down before. It wouldn't be that bad, but the gameplay tends to be too gimmicky and awful on rushed ports.
opn4bzns
01-26-2008, 7:17 AM
Even with the graphics toned down I doubt it could run it. The physics are meant to be very impressive, and the city is huge, and especially demanding if it can't cache it (since the Wii has no hard drive).

The trouble is, I really want the game, but I don't have a 360 or a PS3, and I can't afford to buy one, buy not releasing a PC version (or a cropped PS2) they will have sliced off allot of their market.

This is going to be the first chance for me to get a GTA on its release date rather than having to wait for a port (I was always Pro-Xbox). But I can't see me buying it the day it comes out, maybe a few months down the line. Despite what I've been hearing about the 360 and PS3 versions being identical, I think I'll probably get it for PS3 in the end 'cause I just prefer to have the whole series on one console.

It's possible that they'll release a pc version. The PC versions of 3, Vice City and San Andreas were all released 6 or 7 months after the console versions.

Yeah, but it's annoying that they didn't even say one word about the pc version yet. I'm not sure, but I think they announced the pc versions along the ps2 versions at the earlier games.

I really, really like the sound of it all. I think this will be the best one yet, maybe even better than Vice City (which I thought was the best).
Crap release date though, that's literally 5 days before my final exams. Guess I'll just have to wait til the 15th to play it then.

I don't remember any announcements about the PC versions of previous games. I remember when SA came, we were like "damn that Rockstar!, we PC owners wanna play too", then we forgot about it and in like 2-3 months I read on a website that pc version is on it's way.

I am sure they'll make a PC Version. Probably just after they milk the console games for a few months. If they made SanAndreas for the PC they don't have a reason not to put this one on the PC.
I am glad they are making days in-game longer. Now I can take my time and explore.

Very well then. It's just like, this game looks so funkadelic that only thinking they might not release it on PC literally scares the shit out of me.After all, I think the PC-Community has been very faithful, and we're also a big part of the marquet, so I guess it would be decent if they wouldn't completly ignore us.
I think I'll beat all the old games once again to pass the time.

I don't know whether to get it for console or go for the PC version. I always hated the control scheme on GTA for the PC, it just didn't feel right.
The little bit of information I read was that there are multiple ways to complete missions, such as an assassination one where you can apply for a job, buy a suit and go for the interview, then kill the guy and fight your way out.

On the other hand, the games always lagged horribly on my PS2, so it's lose lose if you don't like it on pc.
Like I said in the other short-lived GTA IV thread, I just hope Rockstar hasn't lost their way and made GTA something it's not.
All these features and 'improvements' might suck total dick, and completely lose touch with the GTA feel.

Kick ass!! A bit of variety is needed in the homicide dept. alright!!
I know it's been said that there won't be a PS2 version, but I hope that demand rises to a level where they will look at the possibility of making it work!

I seriously think San Andreas looked worse than Vice City. and that's saying a lot. Because Vice City was the glitchiest game I've ever played. (Seriously, driving fast to realize theres no road below you, and you ACTUALLY fall through the ground?)
How does the size of this new map compare to San Andreas? San Andreas seemed to be big at first, but the more I played the smaller it seemed to get. Then going back to Vice City, man, I don't know how I got lost sometimes on it, it's SMALL.

I heard that this time, Liberty City alone is going to be as big as all of San Andreas, which is pretty neat.
I would get lost in all the games, be it old Liberty City or Vice City, let alone San Andreas, without the map I'd be pretty much screwed. It's still cool that they make the maps bigger and bigger, I hope they are gonna release IV without the boarders at the beginning. But they won't.

Well. In SanAndreas, you could swim to the other side, or fly over. But the cops would instantly get on you. Helicopter and all. But I kind of liked that. Easy way to get the cops mad at you. While you flee on your Lawnmower.
But I do hope they let us go freely this time. Because I love to explore. What I wonder is will there be a custom marker on the map. and will you be able to spend your dough on some new threads? (As crappy as the system was, I was happy to change my clothes ASAP in SA.)

All you whiners need to shut up about your PS2s, seriously. The console would explode if it even tried to process the majesty that is GTA IV.
And a word for the not-so-wise:
LIBERTY CITY WILL BE NOWHERE NEAR SAN ANDREAS IN SIZE, ONLY IN SCOPE.
I don't see where people get off saying "well it's not big therefore it sucks".

You're out of luck. Rockstar have said that the GTA games won't have children or animals.

I've already pre-ordered the game, paid in full, and I'm getting the special edition version. I have to admit it, I'm really excited for this game. I mean, I'm REALLY excited. On a scale of One to Penis Enlargement, I'm Pinocchio after reciting a Bush-speech. I know, I'm funny.
Bad jokes aside, the game is going to be awesome. Rockstar, however, does have a habit of over hyping their games a bit. They claimed they would have some really neat features in San Andreas which they never released and they put some misleading screenshots up. In any case, the game was still great. This time, however, I'm going to set my bar right under what Rockstar is saying.
I owe my gaming career to Grand Theft Auto, so cheers to April 29th! (Even though it was supposed to be October 17th).

to get from one side of the new and improved Liberty City to the other will take you at least an hour.

Keep dreaming, bud. They can't do that. If they include children in the game, that's moving into serious legal territory. Rockstar already catches enough flak for being able to kill thousands of people in this game, which has "influenced" people all across the world. Now, if they threw in children, they would be "influencing" more and would get banned from shelves and some SERIOUS lawsuits. Animals aren't as bad, but I could see why they choose now to include them. We just don't need them there.

Yeah, it started getting stupid. It went from BOY IN DA HOOD CHILLAN WIT HIAS HAWEMIES to boy from the hood in the wilderness working for crooked police who burns a marijuana crop field and goes to a city where he starts to work for the Yakuza after impressing the boss in a race and takes out a whole crime syndicate led by a crooked FBI officer (did I mention all the actual police in the game are crooked? Yeah.) and also fights a fledging war with the Triads, then goes to Vegas to wipe out the whole mafia and do yet more FBI jobs including stealing a harrier jet and blowing up a whole spy flotilla, then going back to his hood and wiping out everyone and everything and pwning the nubs while having a big chase with firetrucks in the end.
Sorry, I spoiled it. The end boss battle is with a fire truck.
Yeah, but seriously, GTA 3 was fair with the story, it wasn't that bad. Vice City actually had a good story, but San Andreas was like a parabola, it started good, sloped down, sloped up, then ended down. More like a hyperbola then.

I just hope they keep it feeling like it's a good old GTA game. But I do hope they come up with something new, which it seems they have done. I mean, sure it's the same city. But it looks very different judging by the Trailers. Also, the physics so far look great. Especially the way the characters look and the way they talk, compare the trailers to SanAndreas and you'll see what I mean. GTA4 will have finally caught up with the big guns. But we'll see if they deliver.

Man I used to play GTA 2 when I was in the 3rd grade. But seriously, this game is going to be a generic* GTA. Really I hope they can deliver more stuff. The whole getting drunk thing was probably inspired from GTA Vice City, where you drive drunk and in GTA San Andreas where you get high off the weed. The guns seem like the same as in the same from GTA: San Andreas, Aks, M16s/M4s, Uzis, Pistols, and of course Rocket Launchers. The only thing I'm not going to like is that your going to have to make and maintain relationships.

This not a new thing. Games are $100 when they come out here. In the US they're what, $50? Even with the currency difference they should only be about $70. Activision changed the Australian price of CoD4 on steam from $49 to $88 overnight with no explanation. Even Bioshock, an Australian game, was cheaper in the US.

That's quite utter bullshit. and I think the games in the US since the new consoles rose about 10 dollars. So it's like $60 now. Insane though, I'd hate to live there due to that one thing.

I know that becuase of the improved graphics that it's more like real life than before. I know that is was more innocent becuase of its cartoonish look ,but I'm wondering how much they can get away with when using next gen graphics. But it did bother me that you never saw 1 kid in the entire game. I know for a fact that there will be a lot of controvery over the game like Vice City and San Andranas (i know i spelt that wrong but im too lazey to look it up)
I can't belive that after all those push backs that it's finally here.

I am surprised myself they've come this far through all they've been through. I am curious to see how the new systems will affect how the game will change from it's older titles as well. and from what the trailers show, it looks much better with way better physics.
StoryTeller5
02-15-2008, 11:44 PM
They did improve physics. In a preview they metioned that they focused a lot on it.they gave an exsample of walking across the street.Where when you were half on the street half on the road, your foot wouldnt hover anymore instead your foot would be on the street and it would look as if you were walking onto a curve. I hope it can live up to its hype becuase so many titles promise then never deliver.

The ragdolls and stuff are all dynamic. I'm pretty sure Niko will dodge through crowds, Assassin's Creed style, instead of just walking in a straight line. The ability to play radio on your mobile should make walking a bit more appealing too.
I just really really hope it stays GTA, and doesn't forget itself in new features.

Apologies for the double post, but I thought this was probably worth bumping the thread for.
It's a new preview. It's translated from french, so excuse the shitty grammar in some bits of it.
According to the journalists, the first hands-on minutes were enough to solidify their feelings of how the game is going to kick ass.
Liberty City has more streets than any other game in the genre.
You cannot enter into every building. However, you can interact with most of them. Rooftops, stairways, fire escapes, partial interiors, etc.
Niko will not be able to manage property, gangs or trade. To what extent, tho? We do not know.
Bowling, dart games, drinking games, strip clubs and night clubs will be available.
The core of GTA IV is all about the human relationship.
Sometimes, your contacts may call you during a hard mission to ask you a service. In this instance, you can choose between the mission or whatever your contact is asking. If you ditch your mission to do things with your phone contact, you may see consequences. Whether or not you will be able to replay the mission that you went away from remains to be seen.
The new impression of seeing a next generation living, breathing city is absolutely stunning.
The pedestrian population density changes between the place/borough you are in.
If you walk around the street with a gun in your hand, pedestrians who have a phone can call the police.
In one instance when Niko tried to carjack someone, the scared innocent driver sped away so fast that he hit two cars.
During the first mission that the journalists played, they tried to carjack someone without a gun. The driver beat up Niko. Niko got beat up so bad that he ended up at the hospital.
Pedestrians react in a very realistic way. The journalists said that it is as if each person in the game leads his/her own life.
It took 15 minutes to go through 2/3 of Manhattan with a boat. It took 10 minutes by car to go through Brooklyn and Central Park.
The cars can be destroyed very realistically. Every part of the car can bend and fold.
GTA IV has a wider variety of mission types. The missions are more difficult than in previous games.
The game is done. Most clipping bugs are gone. The game is super smooth in terms of frame rate. (Note: The game is not 100% done. It is not "gold" yet.)
If you press the jump button, Niko can climb everywhere. In other words, wall climbing from San Andreas has returned. You can strafe on walls, too.
There is swimming club. [Er, what?]
If you have five stars, it's very difficult to escape from the cops. They are everywhere and they don't joke with you. They are cleverer than in previous incarnations of the series.
While in a boat, the sound effects are awesome. You can hear the sound of the waves that beat the front of the boat.
With powerful weapons, you can shoot through the walls.
The weather that was seen during the four hours of gameplay included fog, rain, sun and clouds. A variety of colors can be seen depending on the time of day.
When you die, you pay $100 but you get to keep your weapons.
When you go to jail after getting busted, you pay more than $100 and you lose your weapons.
While you are drunk, it's very difficult to control Niko. The drunk sensation is perfectly done.
When stealing a car from a pedestrian, Niko didn't get into the car before the pedestrian sped up. Niko held onto the car as the pedestrian glided along the road. (Note: It may have been the pedestrian holding on to a car Niko was in. The translation is sketchy.)
Choppers with search lights are in the game.
Women will striptease in strip clubs when you pay.
Depending on the borough you are in, pedestrians may speak different languages. Italian, Chinese and those in the Bronx are different when it comes to language.
Health kits are available only in buildings.
Grenade and molotov cocktail sound effects are stunning.

02-22-2008, 10:45 PM
The more I hear about this game, the more stunning it seems to me. I love the fact that the pedestrians can now fight back when you try stealing their cars. Breakable terrain. and smarter cops. (Though that may come with better AI all around.) I thought I read somewhere that the cops are easier to rid of if you have one or two stars. But the higher it is, the more difficult it is. Rather than just adding different cars and weapons shooting at you, the AI improves and the more determined they are to take you out.
I am more psyched about the game now. It seems way more realistic.
Also, Wall Climbing??

Well, to be fair, they've been fighting back when you jacked them since GTA3.
I am quite excited about the climbing though, the little wall jumps and stuff you could do in San Andreas were really fun.

02-23-2008, 5:33 AM
Yeah same here, or Assassin's Creed. But I assume it means just jumping over a fence or low obstacle if you run at it.
This looks likes a smashing game all 'round, but once again I have to express my concerns that it stays true to the tone of Grand Theft Auto.
Either way I will probably love it.
Arent the GTA games censored more in america than other places?
No, they are fairly heavily censored here in Australia, as far as I know.
no, not at first, remember how san andreas was banned for a while tweek? it got censored after that to be released again. the original wasnt censored as far as i know

I suppose, but that's still censorship.
GTAIII was definitely censored (picking up prostitutes was disabled and they took out something else) and I think Vice City was too, but as far as I know the US releases are generally the same as elsewhere.

BlackHood
02-25-2008, 10:33 AM
One of the most dangerous things they could do is work so hard at making it into The Sims, that they forget that what makes GTA is the huge amount of weaponry and gratuitous murder.
Also in the last 5 years the censorships have changed all over the world; with so many new horror-gore films like Saw 3 becoming mainstream the government has had to take a step back when it comes to forcing people to chop up their game/film/program.

Nothing except prossies were censored. Australia is strange, because nudity and swearing on primetime tv are fine (unlike America), yet games get modified and the occasional movie gets banned. According to an article in the paper, though, we are probably going to get an R (a bit like AO in the esrb system) rating, so games won't be banned any more.

Few reasons why this will be better than the other GTA's,
-Proper aiming system, every hated the aiming in GTA and anyone who says they didn't is a liar.
-Smaller city, with more detail. Anyone who's played Bully knows how much better the city was than a lot of GTA's because it was small but had loads of fun places to go, as opposed to a massive map that feels really dead like SA.
-Little details, I read in a magazine a list of the little details in the game which just sound awesome, such as: some pedestrians will wee up walls, you can dial 911 to get a police car to come to you-then nick it, you can see reflections in the wing mirrors, drivers will duck and drive off causing mayhem if you start shooting in the street, bodies float off in the water and you can shoot the chains holding up logs on a flatbed lorry.
I think a lot of people will not like the more realistic approach but I think they are the more casual people who only play GTA and a few other major franchises (I have friends who only play GTA and FIFA.)

I think the generally unrealistic approach added to the feel and atmosphere of the GTA games. I would love this game (as it appears - I need to play it first ) as a new title but as a continuation of the GTA series it has a duty to live up to its predecessors.

There's a new trailer on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Where, it doesn't show much more than the previous trailers have shown, it gives you a pretty decent view of the new graphics. Helicopters, Explosions, and Mouth Movement are greatly improved. I'd recommend taking a look at it. Not sure if it's on the GTA4 website, but you'd think it would be.

I just hope it doesn't affect the gameplay like the cuts in III/VC did. In the regular version, you could get up to 125 health by having sex with prostitutes. In the Australian version, you couldn't, which made things quite a bit harder.

New previews released today on 4 of the gamemodes.
Team Deathmatch
Classic deathmatch done Grand Theft Auto style. Go anywhere, do anything: the whole city is yours. 16 players max, teams can be made in any configuration. Weapons on the ground can be configured by the host. Capitalism rules here: the team with the most money in the end is the winner.
GTA Race
Rockstar North's twist on the concept of a race. Host selects vehicle type (each racer selects his or her specific vehicle after that), race, number of laps, and time limit. Despite ordered checkpoints, players can go anywhere in the city at any time. Do you want a straightforward race from start to finish or do you want to create a roadblock and shoot rockets at your fellow racers? The choice is yours - each player does it slightly differently. 16 players max.
Cops N Crooks
2 teams, 2 vastly different goals. The cops can see the crooks on their radar but the the crooks can only see the escape point making this the ultimate cat and mouse situation. For the first time, players can get a chance to be on the other side of the law in a Grand Theft Auto with Cops n' Crooks. A team of "crooks" need to get their boss to safety, as the team of "cops" pulls out every trick in the book to try and stop this from happening. Again, 16 players max.
Hangman's NOOSE
Co-op in Grand theft Auto IV is a 4 person affair. Each mode is a short, story-based mission you must complete with your friends. In Hangman's NOOSE you must get crime boss to an extraction point alive. First, several of Liberty City's finest need to be dealt with and then transport must be secured. Will you take Kenny to safety in an armored car? How about a motorcycle or attack chopper? The choice is all yours.

This game is really making me anxious to play. I just want to do what I always do in GTA games and ignore the missions and just explore as much as I can. Which was great in San Andreas because you weren't COMPLETELY blocked off from the other islands, but you'd still get the cops on you. I think GTA4 is going to have an even higher replay value than it's previous games. One concern I have is how long will the game be. I remember in the older GTA games if you didn't play around too much and just did the missions the game wouldn't last too long at all. Namely Vice City.

I wouldn't be too worried about campaign length because of all the extras added. I mean, even if Vice City was short it was still a glorious game.
I really don't want to think too much about it because there is still another week to go. On the plus, I've got a statistics test the day it comes out, meaning I'll be out of class hopefully an hour earlier.

Vice City was an excellent game, and even though I beat it about 4 times and have played the first half of the game over 150 times, I don't think it'll ever grow old. Glitches sure slowed me down though. Falling through the ground. Flying cars about 20 feet in the air. Random freezes. I loved that game to death though. Tommy Vercetti is my freaking hero of ALL video games.
One thing about GTA is the immense about of cheats for pretty much ALL of the GTA games. I wonder if this will have any cheatcodes and if it'll effect the 360 achievements. I wonder if it'll be like Saint's Row where if you activate cheats it'll disable achievements... I just hope there's some cheats at all!
I am really really excited about online play. It'll be like the San Andreas 2-Player missions, except you won't be tied to the other player and you can have the whole screen to yourself! Not to mention much more than 2 players and loads of game types.

I don't think there is a problem with the city being too "small". It took me no more than 10-12 mins of driving in normal car to get from across the SA.
Yeah. Supposedly even though the sandbox is smaller in this one, supposedly it takes an HOUR to get across town. But that may be a little bit too much.
i think at most it will take half an hour.

An hour through traffic, about 10 minutes around the entire thing by boat.
The city is only a bit smaller in land mass compared to San Andreas, but over 20x bigger in scope. Everything is extremely detailed, extremely focused on.
It doesn't feel like a city spread out over a giant map like San Andreas did. They've put extra intricate work into making it look, feel and play like a real living city.

Yeah, it's supposed to be a lot more vertical than SA was, since you can enter some skyscrapers and there won't be large areas without buildings.

It's a strange game, graphically. It looks pretty good in motion, but some of R*'s screenshots look pretty bad. There's one in which the buildings are all horrible and blurry and a tree looks like a PS1 game, but the site I saw it on is down at the moment so I can't find it.

I've got next week booked off work, so assuming it gets delivered on time I'll be having plenty of fun. GTA is still the only series that get's me really excited for a new release, and Rockstar hasn't disappointed me before. I like the fact that they've made the game more next gen rather than just tacking on new graphics to the older game engines.

Edit: oh, and it's on torrent sites, too, but we don't talk about that here, and besides, you'd need a modded 360 anyway, and you'd be ripping Rockstar off.

You're pretty damn stupid if you actually believe that. The graphics are fantastic, it's time to look past Crysis and see something that's adapted it's own style and pulled it off amazingly. The city is gigantic, the draw distance is absurdly huge while still pulling off awesome lighting effects, high-quality textures and models. PS2 could never do this, let alone a lot of today's engines. It's quite astonishing.

Of course, that isn't stopping me from doing it to the PS2.

I must say it looks like they took a lot of things from Mercenaries, the exposions look very similar, and the snaking trails from RPG's, I've seen people do that helicopter thing on Mercenaries as well, but why not steal explosions, when Mercenaries had the best of any game last gen.

GTA 4 runs on the RAGE engine which means that the explosion will realistic due to the fact that they(R*) are using their own engine, and the explosions will be/are very realistic. Besides you shouldn't compare two different game companies considering that R* takes huge emphasis on their games to make sure their games are perfect. Maybe the people who made mercenaries 2 wanted the game to have realistic explosions also? They are using the Havok engine which is used by the people that made saints row( which had cool explosions also)

Cops N Crooks is so far the funnest mode for multiplayer.
My mom is one of those uptight bitches who think this game is inhuman, digusting game mainly based on things she's heard and only the bad parts of the game she's seen, and she won't let me get it because of that.
I'm pissed off. Anyone else (who is under 17 obviously) in this situation? This applies to this thread because anything grand theft auto is bound to bring up controversy.
The single player is amazing, I never really liked GTA but the story is very immersing. And the fact that you can take different paths that alter what you do in the story makes it feel like an action packed KOTOR.
And the multiplayer is a bit sloppy but fun. Especially Cop n' Crooks and Mafiaya.
We also need to get a bunch of explosmers on at once to play some Free Mode.

There are definitely some tweaks that need to be done to the multiplayer matchmaking. It generates uneven teams on several counts, I seem to have problems connecting to a lot of people (Who I can connect to for guitar hero and rock band and such, so it's not my firewall), and it picks a game leader at random and allows them to just go "Hmm, I changed my mind, I'd rather play a different mode". Other than that, and some minor issues with the car handling, this game is absolutely amazing.

I hate when it tries to connect to a game, fails, then sends me back to single player. Lame. I don't think the game is as 'bad' as it used to be, but it's still real great fun. Getting drunk is hilarious, laughing your ass off and tripping over the slightest cracks in the sidewalk. Then there's drunk driving. Wooh!

Can't you just go and buy it? Aren't American stores not legally obligated to not sell to minors, since ESRB isn't a government organisation?
(Apologies if you're not American, but I can't think of anywhere else with a 17 rating. I'd probably have the same problem, but you only have to be 15 to get it here.)

Where'd he get the money from?
And if you can get the money, just get a mate to buy it for you like someone above did since getting it yourself may be troublesome if you only go shopping with your mum or whatever. Also, if a mate gives it to you at school you can hide it in your rucksack, which you couldn't really do if you just went to the shop after school. Unless you bring a rucksack with you every where you go.

I don't know the rules exactly, but I think they are legally obligated not to sell to minors. If not, then they are really strict on the rule to not sell to minors.
But maybe the fact that you only have to be 15 in other regions will give me another argument.

When I bought mine from Walmart the computer thing asked the guy if the buyer was 17+ and since my mom was with me he just continued on. So I suppose for American's it's 18 and up, still. But I am sure there are a couple of places who don't follow the rules or simply don't care.
It took me a long time to get used to the driving physics. I am still not used to it. You can slide out easily, especially if it's raining, and it's almost impossible to go around corners, especially if you use the hand brake, because you'll just end up turning the whole car around.

You need to be 18+(or 17, I don't know the hard facts) to buy this game in America. Not sure about anywhere else but recently it has become a bitch. It used to be so easy to buy M rated games for N64 and ps1 but now everyone needs something to cry about.

I GOT IT LOL
Not much goin on so far. Some cool characters and alot of over the top swearing. The game was too dark n shit for a while, I could hardly see at night. I had to turn the brightness n saturation up a bit. Looks allright now.
Some stuff is pretty funny, but what I laughed at the most so far is this part where I was on a bike with Roman; Some jazz music was playing and he was jabberin on about how he remembers what it was like when they were kids- Then I crashed into a fence and mid-sentece he went "OH! JESUS CHRIST!" and they both did star-jump summersalts with bike helmets on over this fence "HOLY SHIT!". Then after we got up, he carried on with the conversation.

I love the new driving. It makes the city somewhat bigger because you cannot just drive to the other end in 5 minutes.
As for the bikes, they are awesome but total death traps, especially online! I hit a guy head-on and when I turned around I saw him hit the ground from at least 30 feet in the air. I shit myself laughing because I knew a person just screamed at his TV somewhere in the world.

Cristo
05-01-2008, 7:03 AM
I really can't imagine what they'd cut from the game without having to cut out significant amounts.
They can't cut out the swearing, because the dialogue mainly consists of swearing, they can't cut out the violence because the game mainly consists of violence etc.
The only thing I could imagine they might cut out would be any sex scenes with girlfriends, but after the whole Hot Coffee thing I don't even think there are any scenes of a sexual nature (I haven't gotten far enough with the girlfriend bit yet). There are hookers in the game, so like GTA III they might cut those, but other than that I can't possibly imagine what they'd cut.
Edit:
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/869/869828p1.html
Aussies aren't missing out on much, just a fixed camera during the sex scene in a car with a hooker. But it's the principles of it really.

Well, good to see it's only very minor. They wouldn't ever cut swearing, you can say 'fuck' and 'cunt' after 8:30pm on free tv here, and at any time on cable. They only get whiny about violence in cases where it's against kids or sexual.
I assume the extremely minor nature of the cuts means it can play against global copies in multiplayer, too.
Edit: and since there have been altogether too few gifs in this thread, here's a lovely one.

Is it just me or is Michelle really weird and suspicious? She keeps asking me what I do, whether it's criminal, whether Roman is a criminal, if I'm hanging out with bad people whilst she never EVER says anything about herself. Where is she from? According to her she's from "Somewhere....Err the Midwest" and when I asked her what she does, she just asked me instead.
No spoilers please, if you're played far enough and know something about her please don't tell I'm just asking what others think as well.

Finally found some time to play it. Fuckin' shit this is AWESOME. Driving is still a little weird for me, I've been crashing into poles and trees and whatnot, but not fast enough to fly out the windshield. ONE THING that I did like to notice is that whenever you walk up stairs, he actually walks on each individual step.

Wow, how the hell did you guys get that far into the game? ...Maybe I am just playing around too much and not playing the game as much as I should... I just recently unlocked the second island. Roman's Sorrow, I've done quite a few missions since then, but nothing really improving for the storyline.
While we are sharing stories, just earlier I was low on health and was fixing to head somewhere once I got into a car, I started to walk and could hear an ambulance in the background once I got to the sidewalk BAM I got knocked over by the ambulance, then the second tire went over me and killed me, while this was going on I was drunk with Roman, as well. So that totally interrupted our 'date'.
Also I was going to take Michelle bowling for the second time, and I was on a bike and the GPS lead me to a dead end, and the bowling alley was right across some rocks, I figured I could drive across them on the bike, unfortunately I hit the first rock way too hard and Michelle went flying off the back of the bike and said I was insane.
I want to play with someone in free mode and just wreck havoc on the city. But most people just want to kill each other...

Multiplayer doesn't fucking work for me :mad::mad:
I just keep getting the "disconnected for game. returning to single player" or whatever message. Anyone else have this problem?
Also canceling dates is fucking hilarious. I was going to pick up Roman to get drunk and hit a pedestrian and a cop saw me. He turned his lights on and I shot him and his partner in the face through the windshield. Next thing I know I have four stars and like 6 or 7 cops speeding up behind me trying to shoot out my tires while I'm running down people trying to escape. "Sorry Roman, I'm afraid I'm going to have to cancel our plans."
For those who haven't gotten that far in the game, don't read the spoiler below (I'm looking at your MCR_Rules)
Michelle's a fucking bitch, she took the damn coke from us! But oh well, I screwed her a few times and whatnot. I did think something was up with her though, all the questions and whatnot.
I got the game a couple days ago, and its fucking great, it seriously is. I like the changes they made to it. The shooting is easier, you can take cover(which is a bit... wonky-ish at times, but it works), the driving and shooting is better, the dialogue is superb, and the radio stations are funny as fuck like they always have been. Oh and Laslo, still funny.
I love going online and reading the news articles because the shit's hillarious. Like the guy who keeps decapitating joggers and whatnot. Oh and the missions are great too, there's a great variety in them, and they still have humor too. I've never been a super duper fan of GTA, I mean, I liked Vice City a whooole lot because it was the 80's and it was hillarious. But, San Andreas didn't do it for me, it was okay, but it seemed a bit bland. Maybe just too much tedious shit to do (eating, etc). Plus, I don't really remember any funny moments about it. But GTA IV has that humor in it with all the characters and such.
I'm also glad they finally fixed their hands where they're not shaped like cups or the letter "C" anymore. I always thought that was funny.
But yea, the game's awesome. Oh and I love the new wanted system, it still proves difficult at times(I've had three stars at the most) to get rid of it, but it seems a bit more...fair in a way (thought still far fetch'd in some ways). I also like how if you steal a cop car you can access the computer.

I'll tell you what's different about this and other GTA games: Killing people makes me feel like a twat.
I failed this mission, and I thought right fuck it, rampage. There was nobody really near me, so I ran up some stairs and found a guy wandering about. I started a fight with him, he started winning, so I knifed the shit out of him. Except no cops came; So I was standing there with a knife, standing over this dead guy and it was weird because Niko wouldn't do that, I wouldn't do that, so why did I just knife a guy? What am I, some kind of creepy motherfucker? I could be bowling right now.
I thought oh, cos it's cool when the cops chase you. So I went shotgun crazy on some fools, and before the police showed up, I ran out of shotgun ammo. There was this guy that I'd only just got in the leg, so he was limping away, kind of fell over a bit, got up, told me to shoot him, I didn't, then he just leaned against a tree and slowly bled to death. I thought shit, that wasn't funny. Then some cops came and shot me dead. There was nothing fun about that either.

I like how if you fail a mission, and it's a mission where someone talks to you on the way to a destination, and you retry the person talking will say something different than last time. Which is EXCELLENT, because I hate hearing the same thing over and over again unless it's really funny. (Like the heist mission in GTA: Vice City, hilarious.)
I don't really like the radio stations, so I turned them off. Usually I like listening to the public shows where they talk political and whatnot. Wasn't Lazlo the guy in Vice City Stories with that really metal guy? and in the original Vice City? Or is he just in all the games...
I hope the game doesn't disappoint me. I think getting money and arming yourself is WAY easier than it used to be. I used to stress about not being able to arm up with a simple pistol due to not having any money, which is why I used cheat codes.

And I did notice the whole failing the mission, re-doing it, and the dialogue being different. For me it was when you first met the Jamaican guy, and you learned the cover system. I was still slow on figuring out how to lock on so the drug dealers killed him It gave you the option to re-do it (via-cell phone, so you won't have to drive back!) and when they said something different I literally said, "Whoa...this shit is real."

I liked that up until this particular mission: I'll just say you're driving around with Roman, and there's alot of fire;
Cos Roman's business and home is burning down. The first time I did it, Niko wasn't doing alot of talking and Roman was having a breakdown. He was goin mad about how he came to America with no home and no money, then after years he's got this small business together. Then how Niko came and he had somewhere to go, he was complaining about how shitty Roman's appartment was, got them both into mob trouble and got Roman's home and business burned down and now they're on the run. It really put things into perspective with how Roman built his life up from nothing, then Niko came and fucked it all up.
When I played the mission a second time though, the conversation was mostly Niko makin jokes about Roman and calling him a liar. It just made him seem like a total jerk. I would've rather heard the first conversation again.
I didn't really like the radio stations until I found Lazlow on a station called Integrity 2.0. I didn't even know which one Lazlow was, but it was alot funnier than that other shite.
I'll tell you what's different about this and other GTA games: Killing people makes me feel like a twat.

The roads do seem to get a little slicker when it's raining, but it's really only noticeable when you're making the transition from normal weather to rain, and when I first noticed I was on a bike, and I couldn't keep it straight, though that WAS when I was still learning how to drive well.
The game still feels like GTA, but I miss the good radio stations, and how you could outrun cars sometimes and jack them. Also, no airplanes. But I guess that's okay, since it's not a real huge map. Maybe in GTA5. I can dream.
I think the whole "Try Again" message is crap most of the time. Sure you don't have to drive TO the start of the mission. But you still have to drive to the place afterwards, they took away the "Skip Drive" option if you've already done it.
The game isn't perfect, and can be annoying in some situations, but it's still great.
The aim system can be annoying at times, as well.
and no, I_Smell, that seems pretty darn funny to me...
