Today was Australia day and that means its triple J's hottest 100. The hottest 100 is a annual event that is a countdown of the most voted songs by Australia. Its a big event over here with live countdowns in some major city's. I believe the number of people who voted was 700,000.
Here are the top 10 with youtube Video's of the top 5 song:

1 Muse Knights of Cydonia
http://youtube.com/watch?v=GQ0sfPaIgd4
2 Silverchair Straight Lines
http://youtube.com/watch?v=79DrGah0GuY
3 Kings Of Leon On Call
http://youtube.com/watch?v=UEh8OL0Jj-0
4 John Butler Trio Better Than
http://youtube.com/watch?v=79cG_F1GxfI
5 Faker This Heart Attack
http://youtube.com/watch?v=EWaHdIIMRqc
6 Foo Fighters The Pretender
7 Daft Punk Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (live)
8 Cold War Kids Hang Me Up To Dry
9 Soko I'll Kill Her
10 Panics, The Don't Fight It

As many of you know I am a huge Muse fan and I am really happy that they won. Hopefully this might make them tour next year.

You can check out the top 100 list here: http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/hottest100/

So much shitty music again. A few good ones though, maybe next year will be better (probably not, though).

43 - Lupe Fiasco (Feat. Matthew Santos) - Superstar
Should've been much higher, imo. Great track.

47 - Cog - What If
I'm suprised it went this high. Nonetheless a very tight band and a very interesting song from them. Odd time signatures ahoy.

89 - Queens Of The Stone Age - Sick, Sick, Sick
Also suprised for this one because I thought it would rate much higher.

I was supposed to listen to this, I voted and everything but I completely forgot about it until it was over. :(

Faker sound good on CD, but I've seen them live twice and both times they were utterly horrible.

I turned on the radio just in time to hear the #1. And it Actually made me think of you, Knight of Cydonia.

Wow knights of Cydonia I really like that song.

It's funny because I have my own top 100 hundred band list on my myspace that I am working on. It really has no order though.

Agreed. Its their best album. Also origin of symmetry is good to pick up. Reason: http://youtube.com/watch?v=NkvJaG8mY3w

I haven't listened to the H100 in about 7 years. This one makes a record for the most Australian entries (53/100) and it's the first time in ten years that the Living End HASN'T been on there. Weird, huh? I didn't think they'd put anything worth listening to out in about 5 years at least.

Much as I like Muse and Foo Fighters, it baffles me that they both garnered top ten spots when there were some fantastic Australian songs that really were more worthy. Not Straight Lines (and I mean, who isn't sick of that?), but things like Powderfinger, The Grates (mind you, they got some pretty good standings last year) and a swathe of other artists too. Unfortunately, the trouble with H100 is that it ends up a shabby mixture of top 40 shit scattered from 20-100, with the occasional even shittier Indie song. Rarest of all in it is a genuinely good song that makes it anywhere between 100 and 20. 19-1 are usually worth the listen and pretty predictable.

PS: Muse kick some arse pretty hard, but Black Holes is their weakest album to date. Absolution is one of my all time favourite rock albums, alongside Nevermind, OK Computer, Ten, Double Allergic, Back in Black, Metallica and Images and Words.

LincM I have to disagree with you there. Yes Black Holes does have some bad songs but also a few of their best. Knights of Cydonia, Super massive black hole, Assassin, Invincible and Map of the Problematic are awesome. Plus Hullabaloo was there worst album. Black holes is usually put in 3rd before showbiz or Origin of Symmetry in many peoples list I have talked to.

I got Absolution and Origin of symmetry and I'd have to say origin is the best so far. I'll give them all a few more listens I think before I really decide.
Any talk of a new album? (this seems to have become a muse discussion thread)

I had surgery a few days before hottest 100 day so didn't do the usual backyard cricket/blow up pool/sink piss bbq that i usually do. ah well...theres always next year...

On the actual list...i was stoked knights got the top spot. Its not my favourite song ever but it beat out silverchair so i'm a happy camper. I'm sorry people...silverchair dont rock...they suck. Straight Lines was so not deserving of second place.

So again, happy with the number one. One wonders how much Guitar Hero influenced the count though?

yeah guitar hero's influence was exactly what i thought when i heard dom's voice on the radio. at least straight lines didn't get #1. Young modern is a pile of arse.

Yeah, because the quality of music is totally quantifiable based on the opinion's of people you have talked to.

you're a dickhead

If by "dickhead" you mean "completely fucking correct" then yes, Linc is totally a dickhead. Go back to the general forum if you're going to get so butthurt by people's opinions on subjective issues.

If by "completely fucking" correct you mean completley fucking wrong, then yes...you're an idiot. The Living Ends last album came out around Feb 2006, debut at number one, had a couple of top ten singles (we're talking Aria charts here) and got nominated for a J Award. They also won a bunch of shit at the Jack awards so...seems that there was probably a bit worth listening too in the last 5 years.

Oh yeah, I forgot that the quality of music is quantifiable based on other people's opinions. I'm so sorry, I'll have to start liking all music that recieves awards from now on :indiff:

By the way, charts are so fucking riggable and usually only reflect units sold to stores and not units purchased from the stores. As for the Aria charts, they do count purchase from stores, but only charting stores such as Sanity and HMV. I'm not sure about HMV but Sanity I'm pretty certain is owned by Sony/BMG. In any case its VERY easy for a label to rig the charts and in fact labels in this country do it a lot.

How, in all the times you've mentioned albums from their early years, have you, who doth loveth Muse so much, not mentioned 'Showbiz'? I'm not a Muse fan at all, but Showbiz kicks ass!!

Showbiz is good but it isn't there best work. Yes Sunburn and Muscle Museum Kick ass and i do hold the whole album in high standard but it just isn't there best work overall.

Just so you know, I am not at all familiar with anything after Origin of Symmetry - I didn't like the singles I heard from the later albums, so I just ignored them. Cheers for your opinion!
