I don't think I made one of these yet.
Descendents.
I downloaded Milo Goes to College and I Don't Want to Grow up on a whim and they're a both fantastic. I have become addicted to them.
Gorilla Biscuits
I never really liked melodic hardcore until I started listening to these guys. Start Today is one of the best hardcore albums next to Age of Quarrel by the Cro-Mags.
Internal Affairs
This band are breaking up soon and I'm sad I won't be able to see their last show in NSW. They are the best LA hardcore band and are really powerful.
Cruel Hand
Their new album is really good and very heavy. Fairly straight forward hardcore.
Public Enemy
Just to break up the hardcore a bit, Public Enemy are my favorite hip hop group.
It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold us Back is my favorite hip hop album of all time.

So basically, you're giving someone shit for liking bands that you yourself admit to having liked? Riiiight.

And what, praytell, is 'real music'? Because your name implies you like Slipknot and/or Hollywood Undead, in my opinion. Which kinda makes what you said laughable.

Er...no. My name has nothing to do with bands, it was for a song I was thinking of writing ages ago but never really came about. Although, I do see your point, but no. Slipknot are mediocre at best and Hollywood Undead...while sometimes humerous, pretty much suck otherwise.

And I wasn't really giving them shit. Did I once say 'you're music tastes sucks'. No, I did imply they need to expand yes. And they do. I admitted I used to (and still do for Green Day) like those bands...but I expanded my tastes beyond pre-pubescent punk. Go check out www.sputnikmusic.com, most of the top bands on there I'd agree with being brilliant.

Hmm...
A Perfect Circle- Out of all of Maynard Keenan's work and little side projects, this came out beautiful. All of their albums had something absolutely amazing on it, and it wasn't ever the same thing twice. Plus, the bassist is sexy.

Scars on Broadway- System of a Down is nothing to try to compare to, unless you're one of the lead singers. When Daron went out on his own, he did (Easily) 3 times better than Serj did. Never really was a question that he was the brains behind the band.

Nightwish- Tarja's voice is something godly, and the rock-opera feel to them is definitely appealing in my opinion...just like the keyboardist, lol.

Slipknot- They reach the point of being heavy, without being obnoxious with the screaming. If i cant understand 2/3 of the song, it's not music, but Slipknot makes music for sure.

Escape the Fate- Because everyone needs some angst in their playlist and their song "Apocalypse" blew me away. Sad though, because the new vocals doesn't impress me in the least.

Well that's somewhat of a relief.

You basically said they didn't like real music, which is giving them shit. And who's to say they haven't expanded? All I mean is, their music tastes may not be dissimilar to yours, other than the top 5 bands. Or heck, they may be at the age you were at when you really liked that stuff.

^It's never too early to start expanding. I'm sorry, Im just used to talking with an elitist viewpoint on music. I gotta teach myself not to all the time.

Updated list:

1. Enslaved - Amazing Norwegian prog band. I really love their newer albums like Vertebrae and Ruun. Very atmospheric, yet cool music.

2. Ulver - Another Norwegian band with their specialty in ambient and experimental. Recommended to check out their Shadows of the Sun and Blood Inside albums. For fans of Sigur Ros, Godspeed You Black Emperor, and Coil.

3. Zimmers Hole - If you thought GWAR is a hilarious metal group, then get a load of Vancouver's Zimmers Hole. With song titles like "1,000 Miles of Cock", "Satan is a Gay Pornstar", "Gospel Sodomy Boy on Blow", and "Death to the Dodgers of Soap", it's not hard to see this is some crazy stuff. Highly recommended for all you metal heads out there; it's probably one of the best bands out there that parodies heavy metal.

4. Judas Priest - Just been on a NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) bug lately and Priest is on top of my list. That's probably because I picked up their greatest hits album recently which contains most of their classic hits.

5. Ministry - I guess Al Jourgessen (Ministry's frontman) was right; their best albums come out when a Republican president is in office. Their latest albums -- Rio Grande Blood and The Last Sucker -- has a nice mix of metal and industrial while along the way mocking the Bush administration.

In Flames - I love all their albums really, especially come clarity, even if people say they are becoming metalcore, I dont really care
Serj Tankian - Needs more recognition in the music scene, great lyrics that work perfectly with his voice
Weezer - I dunno, I've always just loved Weezer's sound, its kinda just my relaxing happy music
Kreator - My favourite thrash metal band, just love the drumming in it tbh
White Stripes - Even though they arent super great talent wise, I just love how they sound

1. Breaking Benjamin
His voice just seems to be the one i like the best out of any band i've heard so far. It's not as much screamo and it's not completely heavy metal its almost halfway between those two. No i did not discover them through Halo nor do i blast diary of Jane 24/7.
2. Liquid Tension Experiment
All the riffs and solos just rip me to shreds. If i had an inner guitarist He would play these songs over and over again.
3. Lodger
Their songs make me feel like im in a different world. a nice carefree one.
4. 403 Forbidenna
I don't have a reason i just like the way the music sounds :D
5. System of a Down
I get all fun, happy, and hyper when i hear their songs.

1.Unloco
I really like the lyrics to the songs and i find the music really catchy.
2.Spineshank
I really like the chorus to almost all their songs.
3.Slipknot
I find all of their songs really catchy and they created my favourite song: Snuff.
4.Disturbed
I like the singers voice and most the lyrics to the songs.
5.System of a down
I usually get cheered up when I listen to any song by them.

Modest Mouse Just a great, great band. Their earlier stuff is better than the later stuff, but it's still all great.
Favorite Song: Black Cadillacs

Red Hot Chili Peppers I've loved them for a long time, the whole band sounds great together.
Favorite Song: Stadium Arcadium

The White Stripes Unique sound, skillful and soulful playing - perfect.
Favorite Song: Seven Nation Army (Even though it's overplayed a bit, I still love it)

Jack Johnson Just very chill music, love to listen to him when I'm working.
Favorite Song: Better Together

Dispatch I love indie rock, and these guys are pretty much the epitome.
Favorite Song: Open Up

Okay, let's give this a try. In no particular order:

Alanis Morissette
I'm likely to get some stick for this one, but I don't care - Alanis has an amazing voice, and really, really good lyrics. Plus she turneds My Humps into a piano-vocal track. Double win.

Mindless Self Indulgence
As was said a few pages back, I believe, these guys are impressive live. Completely mental, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Very definitely a case of love them or hate them, but I'm on the love side!

InnerPartySystem
Not a particularly famous band, but they are still amazing. Watch the video for Don't Stop [the original one with the newsreaders, not the crappy remake] - it's without a doubt the most amazing thing I have ever seen. Ever. They do an amazing kind of electronic music with some major rock elements. Plus every video they've ever made is insane. I've seen them live twice, and definitely plan on seeing them again.

Celldweller
Oh dear God. Where do I start? Celldweller is basically my favourite band of all time, ever. Songs like The Last Firstborn basically take about eight different genres and throw them all in together - but make it work really well. And Birthright is my favourite song of all time. Ever. Klayton's lyrics are unlike anything I've ever heard.

VNV Nation
Intense, emotional electronic music with strong vocals and deep lyrics. I don't really know what else to say about them, except that they're amazing.

Runner Up:

Placebo
The reason Placebo didn't make it into the top 5 is because I don't have a clue why I like them. Brian Molko's voice grates, their lyrics are pretty horrendous - and yet I love the band. Special Needs and Pure Morning are probably my favourite tracks, along with Protege Moi. Their videos are amazing though, especially the two aforementioned. Maybe that's why I like them. Who know?

Eluveitie - My favorite band ever. Great Folk metal with a beautifull harmony between the folk instruments and the more death metallish music. Pure genious.

Pink Floyd - Simply brilliant. All their songs sound different and they all sound nice. Experimental, haunting, beautiful.

The Residents - I don't know why, but I love this band. Their style and their research in sounds and feelings is simply great.

HORSE the Band - I got into this band not so long ago, but I really love it. They dig deep into experimenting, especialy on the time signature level and sound, much like Daughters and The Locusts

Quo Vadis - A great melodic death band from my hometown.

Could've sworn I've already made one of these, I guess it was the 5 Least Favorite thread. Click the band names for a Wikipedia link.

Chiodos/The Chiodos Bros. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiodos)

I'm still not entirely clear why I like this band so much. Maybe I'm a sucker for feminine vocals, or albums that sound like they were made by a bunch of beach kids somehow hailing from Michigan that found a bunch of old instruments at a pawn shop and decided to make All's Well That Ends Well (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All%27s_Well_That_Ends_Well_(album)). Their second album isn't as good (in my opinion, obviously), but generally a much more serious and slower album and nonetheless fantastic. They made a few EPs from 2001-04 before release their first full length that are also worth a listen.

Circa Survive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circa_Survive)

Hallucinogenic is far too strong of a word to describe them but the only other way I can think of doing so at the moment is to say that CS is not a band to put on in the background when you're doing other shit, but a band to put on when you're out for a walk at night or lying on your bed at 2 in the morning. They have a quality about them that, depending on who you are, I guess, can be both a positive and a negative. Although Juturna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juturna_(album)) is probably my favorite album of all time, some of you will probably be turned off by the fact that at times it feels more like your listening to a man sing while the people playing the instruments are entirely irrelevant, as opposed to listening to an actual band. It's just an impression I get at times, and it's certainly not a negative as far as I'm concerned as Anthony Green (in studio, at least) has an incredible voice. Their second album was a bit of a disappointment, I'd rate it a lot higher if it were a debut album as opposed to a follow up but in fairness I doubt anything they release post-Juturna will be as good as Juturna itself.

Fear Before (formerly Fear Before the March of Flames) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear_Before_the_March_of_Flames)

Well don't I feel like a piece of shit. If I hadn't decided to include Wikipedia links I wouldn't have known they changed their name. In any event, I'm an on again off again fan of mathcore but The Always Open Mouth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Always_Open_Mouth) is one of my favorite albums of all time, of any genre. It just has a flow to it, an album that sounds just as good from the first second of the first track to the end as one that you could shuffle all the songs with and still like. There is just the right balance between the chaotic and the slow.

The Outline (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Outline)

I've only ever managed to find one of their two albums (the apocalyptically fantastic You Smash It, We'll Build Around It (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_Smash_It,_We%27ll_Build_Around_It)), but from what little I've been able to find, it's all been rather great. As you can undoubtedly tell by now I am nothing short of appalling at explaining or justifying things so I'll just end with 'uhh, yeah. They're good.'.

The White Stripes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_White_Stripes)

Narrowly edging out August Burns Red is a band right on the other of the badass scale. Most people know the White Stripes as 'that band that did that song.. you know, what's it called? Fuck.. goes dunnnnn dun dun dun dun dun, dunnn' or 'that band with the shitty girl drummer'. Which is rather sad, as they are a lot more than that. Each of there six albums, countless EPs and occasional LP are noticeably different, and the earlier albums in particular (their self-titled debut (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_White_Stripes_(album)) and 2000 follow up De Stijl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Stijl_(album))) are charming in their own ways. They are not strong lyrically, they are not strong mechanically, and in their early days not strong instrumentally either (and to be fair, Meg is no Matt Greiner these days anyway), but they have never pretended to be anything other than that.

Lamb of God:
My favorite band ever. They are insanely good, from Randy's spine-shattering voice, to Chris' double bass techniques and his overall drumming.
Favorite song:
Ruin.
Whitechapel:
The most evil band I've heard since Gorgoroth. The 7 stringed guitars are fast and amazing, while the singer's terrifying voice causes internal bleeding.
Favorite song:
The Somatic Defilement.
NILE:
The best Death Metal band to ever walk the planet. With their unique style of music, and world's fastest drummer, George Kollias with a record 1200 something BPM.
Favorite song:
Papyrus Containing The Spell To Preserve It's Possessor Against Attacks From He Who Is In The Water.
Cephalic Carnage:
A brutal band that also has the most brutal name ever. They're faster than shit, and one of the most talented and heaviest band I've ever heard.
Favorite song:
KILL FOR WEED!
Led Zeppelin:
My favorite stoner band other than Cephalic Carnage. Robert Plant has the voice of an Angel, and they have an exquisite bassist. If you listen closely, Robert Plant will stick his tongue in your ear.
Favorite song:
Ramble On.

Modest Mouse
I've loved their music for ages, and if I'm ever feeling down, I'll just play a little Float On, to keep me going! If I feel like something faster, I'll play up some Invisible! For any other mood I'm in, or mood I want to be in, I can pick a Modest Mouse song to keep me there, or get me there

Muse
For anyone who's wondering: No, I did not play Knights of Cydonia on Guitar Hero before hearing about Muse, I was looking for a Christmas present for my Girlfriend, and I stumbled upon "Black Holes and Revelations". Shortly after listening to the CD with her, I put it on my iPod. I can listen to just about any song from "Black Holes and Revelations" if I feel like being intense, which is often, because I have to look scary to ward off the kids on my bus...

Crystal Castles
Probably my favourite techno group. Some of my favourite songs are "Courtship Dating", "1991", "Black Panter" and "Crimewave". It's pretty good shit.

Streetlight Manifesto
I used to be a pretty big fan of the Ska genre, but it's lost it's appeal... However, Streetlight Manifesto is one of the few Ska bands that I still listen to, mainly because I absolutely love the drums and horns.

K'Naan
I'm not an incredibly big fan of the Rap genre, but K'Naan is different. It's good to know there are well known rap artists out there who rap about about the real ghetto, namely, Wardhiigleey during the Somali Civil War. He raps about the hardships he went through, such as being forced to carry a gun wherever he went, at the age of 14, and having to leave his family to come to Canada (woot) and work as a cab driver, sending most of what he earned back to Somalia. To add to all that, he didn't speak a word of English until much later on. I was going to see him play at Hillside Inside yesterday, but that failed hard, as I got sick at the last second... Balls

AC/DC - they ALWAYS know how to please their fans. They know what they want and they do it. THE THUNDERS FROM DOWN UNDER.

FAVE SONG(s): Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, TNT and Whole Lotta Rosie

Led Zeppelin - Their sound is VERY unique. You could never find other bands like Zeppelin. Page and Jones are GODS. Bonham's beats are beyond awesome and Plant's vocals makes me horny. (BTW, Im a girl)

FAVE SONG: Whole Lotta Love, Babe Im Gonna Leave You and The Lemon Song

Pink Floyd - Ever heard of Money and Comfortably Numb?? They are the gods of psychedelic. Throw away those mushrooms and buy The Dark Side of the Moon. Better yet, buy all of their albums.

FAVE SONGS: Money, Comfortably Numb and Another Brick in the Wall

Lynyrd Skynyrd - The gods of southern rock.

FAVE SONGS: Tuesday's Gone, Black Betty and Sweet Home Alabama

STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN: One of the most phenomenal blues musician of all time. Though his career didn't last so long due to his untimely death, his music will forever live on.

Top five favorite bands in no particular order. Call me mainstream if you want but, hey, it's what I like.

As irockyourmom said, AC/DC. They definitely do know how to please their fans and a quite a few of these new bands should listen to them and learn how to really be a band.

Favorite songs: Back in Black, Highway to Hell and You shook me all night long.

Metallica: What can I say? There's nothing like good old school Metallica to turn up with headphones on and deafen yourself. I say old school as their new music isn't too good. They can cheer you up with some songs and just fill you with head pounding anger with others.

Favorite Song(s): Master of Puppets, Enter Sandman and Ride the Lightning.

System of A Down (RIP): A few bands of this and other genres could really listen to them and learn. They know how to sing and play their instruments. People may say they suck and say that they could outperform them but SOAD actually play pretty complex chords. They're just so good that they make the chords seem easy. Plus their songs are extremely original. They actually put messages about how the world is and what they think should be done about it.

Favorite song(s): Aerials, Chop Suey, B.Y.O.B, Hypnotize, Boom and Soldier Side.

Guns and Roses: First off, I'd like to say I like their older music better than their newer stuff. Back when Slash was with them. They still play Rock but they don't just make it where Axl just screams into the microphone. A lot of their songs really touch you deep down.

Favorite Song(s): Welcome to The Jungle, Paradise City, November Rain and Oh Sweet Child o' Mine.

Cowboy Mouth: Despite the name, these guys and one gal are a very loud and energetic New Orleans rock band. I went to a concert of theirs and I was swept up in the emotion and thrown into a immense whirlwind of fun and deafness.

Favorite song(s): Jenny, The Avenue and Everybody loves Jill.

P.S. Sorry for making this so long but I guess I got really into it.

Hats of!

They just plain rock, no pun intended.

You do need to listen to some more of their songs if you think they're "plain".

My 5 favorite bands, in no particular order:

Alexisonfire- Now who can honestly say that they've never heard a voice as amazing as that of Dallas Green? The way he sings suits the instruments so well, and George Pettit's scream is way more then just a scream, it's an instrument in itself.

Pantera- Pantera are gods. It's as simple as that. Darrel "Dimebag" L. Abbot is in my eyes, the most amazing guitarist in history. The way he'd burst out a riff or solo would make me smile, no matter my mood.

Dance Gavin Dance- They're not all that well known outside of "emo" groups, but they are, in my opinion, the best Post-Hardcore band out there. Before their current self titled album, they were in their prime. Jonny Craig (Now with Emarosa) has a beautiful voice. Words can't explain the way he sings, so it's better if you hear it yourself.

Apocalyptica- No, it's not the Metallica covers that won me over, it's the ability to turn the cello into a metal instrument. The way they play, with or without a vocalist, is beyond comparison. There is no band that you can compare them to, so don't bother.

Dashboard Confessional- The way Chris Carrabba sings sends shivers down my spine. Sure, his guitar playing could be better, but it's the vocals and lyrics that I love.

Pink Floyd: There's nothing I can really say why I like them. I just do. They're talented. They're Original. They just plain rock, no pun intended. Unfortunately I've only listened to two of their songs, I believe and I didn't know that Another Brick in the Wall had three, not one part to it.

..How can a band be one your top 5 when you've only heard two of their songs? Are these the only 5 bands you actually listen to?

This is only right now.

1. Sonata Arctica
I've loved them since I was 12-13 years old. At times I would randomly hear their music in the radio without having any idea who they were and sometimes the songs would end up on my recorded tapes and I'd listen to them again and again. Then I saw a poster of a band called Sonata Arctica and by the look of them, I decided that had to be the band I had been listening all those times. What do you know, I was right. I figure out since I randomly choose their 3rd album to be my birthday gift because I had a good feeling about it. The songs are stories of war, love, mistakes, hatered, fantasy and everything you wish to hear. And it's not power metal no matter how many people say so.

2. Emilie Autumn
I just heard of her like a week ago and it was simply devine. Never in my life has a musical artist so perfectly filled my needs. And I so rarely even like girl artists. But she can do the violin, the keyboard, who knows what else, she makes her own clothes and they're exactly the type I want to wear, and she has a voice of a fallen angel. Kind of. But she's not my favorite because I'm faithful to Sonata Arctica.

3. Sentenced
There's not a single Sentenced-song I dislike. They describe a finnish depression very perfectly and it's the music you want to hear when none of that cheerful crap gets to you: rough, honest and says what you want to say for you.

4. Queen
The songs vary so much that you just don't get bored. Freddie Mercury is one of the greatest singer ever. Their songs are fun to sing, they make you feel the strangest things. I need to mention that Sonata Arctica to me is the Finnish metal Queen, and I like Sonata more because I'm not that into rock usually.

5. Songs To Wear Pants To
There's no words to describe it.... just go check it out if you already haven't.

Their songs are fun to sing, they make you feel the strangest things.

I remember the first time I sang Bohemian Rhapsody. I was so absorbed in the song i totally forgot there were people in the same room as me , but I didn't care.

I thought I was the only one... I think we all have a little bit of Freddie Mercury in all of us. Even if you think you don't you do.

Red Hot Chili Peppers
Eminem
Outkast
Nirvana
Wu Tang Clan

Well those are my top 5 at the moment Id say, but the problem is i need to get into some more punk rock or heavier rock music since those are genres I havent explored enough yet.

Chili Peppers have always been my favorite band because they can play some of the best melodies I've ever heard and every band member is an extremly talented musician, each having superb technique. Eminem would be my favorite all time if he had more material. Outkast is the best hip hop duo I've ever heard with the way they've changed their sound every single album and still remain creative, fresh, and original. Dont feel like commenting on the other two favorites right now though.

Rage Against The Machine - Been listening to Rage for years now, one of the first bands I ever listened to, "Bullet in the head" being the first song I ever heard by them. Zach's lyrics are amazing, well thought-out and meaningful, unlike most of the pointless acts out today. I think Tom Morello is quite underrated (that probably sounds insane but let me finish). He is well knows for his DJ like guitar sounds but not many people know how skilled he is at classicly playing the guitar. Amazing band.

Tool - A band I only discovered last year in october by hearing Maynard in the R.A.T.M. song "Know Your Enemy" and having been listening to them non-stop ever since, the way they write music is amazingly complex, Danny Carey's complicated polyrhythmic drum playing, tying in with Adam Jones and Justin Chancellors guitar and bass playing bouncing off each other and complementing each other. Maynards lyrics are interesting because of their ability to make you want to find out what he is talking about, their music focuses heavily around symbolism and cryptic like messages.

ISIS - I only first heard this band about 3 months ago through hearing they toured with Tool during their 2007 North American tour. ISIS are much like Tool in their complexity but thats about it, their albums are always based around certain themes that reveal a story or message. Their music is heavily based around instrumentals.

System Of A Down - One of the first bands i heard along with Rage, "Science" I think may have been the first song I heard by them, Systems music can be very political at times, "P.L.U.C.K." for example, Serj sings about the Turkish government and the way they treat the Armenian genocide that happened during the first world war. System are currently on a hiatus.

A Perfect Circle - One of Maynard from Tools former bands, formed with ex tool guitar tech Billy Howerdel, Much like Maynards lyrics with Tool, his lyrics in APC are often based on getting out a certain message, engaging the listener.

3. Pagan's Mind
One of the better power metal bands out there in my opinion. With most other power metal bands I tire of their music reasonably quickly, simply because it's not 'epic enough'. I like the way Pagan's Mind does things, they build their songs in a way that suits my tastes in power metal.
I don't know why people complain about Rue's voice. It's perfect.

1. Tool Simply amazing, they really do get the best out of their instruments. Pity they don't have that many songs compared to other good bands that have been around for a while. =/
Favourite songs: Resolution, Wings, Schism, too many to list.

2. Oomph! These guys are the gods of NDH. No more needs to be said.
Favourite songs: Tanz in den Tod, Meine Wunden, Labyrinth, Gekreuzigt, Ice-Coffin, I.N.R.I. vs Jahwe.

3. A Perfect Circle Love these guys. They have fantastic variety to their music, which is always good. eMOTIVe was disappointing though. =/
Favourite songs: Passive, 3 Libras, Judith, Gravity, The Outsider, A Stranger, Orestes.

4. Metallica Meh, I'm sure people have said it better. Their instrumentals are epic.
Favourite songs: The Call of Ktulu, To Live Is To Die, Suicide & Redemption, Orion, Battery, Fight Fire With Fire, Damage, Inc., Trapped Under Ice, My Friend Of Misery. Somewhat unusual ones perhaps: The House Jack Built, Mama Said, Where the Wild Things Are.

5. Can't decide. Between Megaherz, Linkin Park, System of a Down and Rammstein.

Currently:

1. Protest the Hero. They're so incredibly talented at their craft, make every song sound so different and each part sounds how it should. The concepts they write are mindblowing, as well. I seriously recommend them to anyone who's a Prog/Metal fan. Although, to most people that I try to introduce them to, they're main complaint is Rody's voice. It's high, but amazing. He goes from low growls to falsetto in such an instant, and has such control.

2. Coheed & Cambria. They deserve more credit than they're given. They're first single features Claudio's voice at it's highest, and that turns people off, and they complain about it without knowing the kind of control and skill it takes. They're a very talented group, with diversity about them.

3. UnderOath. They're pioneers of the new age, and are always pushing boundaries with each new album. Aaron is an astonishing drummer, and incredibly inventive with his beats.

4. Queens of the Stone Age. Perfect when I'm just in the mood for straight up rock. Homme is a master of his craft.

5. Alexisonfire. I really can't give an in-depth reason why I like them. I just do.

1. Metallica: they got me into metal, I listened to them all my life, and they only have let me down once. Hetfield/Ulrich is one of the best writing credits you can find on a song, and the late Cliff Burton has inspired my bass playing style more than anyone.
Favorite Song: Fade to Black.

2. Jimi Hendrix: He got me into rock. His guitar playing, more specifically his blues. His music post-Experience has influenced my music writing ability more than anyone.
Favorite Song: Little Wing, All Along the Watchtower

3. Van Halen: They are so fun. I never had more fun whilst listening to any other band on a record. They are wild live. Eddie is pretty much the messiah, and the fun sound has helped form my on-stage presence.
Favorite Song: Panama

4. Iron Maiden: They are everything a power metal band should be. Bruce has some of the best pipes in metal. Steve Harris is the best bass player alive right now, and they sure know how to play a live show.
Favorite Song: Caught Somewhere In Time, Children of the Damned, Hallowed be thy Name.

5. Black Sabbath: They created heavy metal, and have still proven to be some of the best at it. They made me want to play metal music. I was dragged to a show by my brother, the moment the started, I said "I wanna do that."
Favorite Song: Heaven and Hell, Electric Funeral.

In no real order, and their best album (in my opinion, of course):
Radiohead - OK Computer (Although everything by them other than Pablo Honey and Amnesiac are excellent as well.)
Orbital - Snivilization (Middle of Nowhere's good too. And II.)
Massive Attack - Mezzanine (100th Window is close, though.)
Björk - Homogenic (Moody, weird, and angry.)
Hybrid - Wide Angle (One of the best albums ever.)

My favorites would have to be:

1. Three Days Grace- I know people may hate them for being mainstream I dont care. I listen to all kinds of music and i just love the way Three Days Grace plays music and how so many songs are meaningful.

2. My Chemical Romance- Again i know a lot of people hate them, i just find their old music catchy and unique, at the time, im not a great fan of their new album, however.

3. Hollywood Undead- I like how they mix screaming, rock, and hip hop together. I have been listening to them since they came out in 2003. I am still a hardcore fan of theirs, HU4L.

4. We Came As Romans- I just like their fresh outlook on Christian HxC, they dont shove it down your throats and dont say you have to do it or your stupid.

5. Im a lil tied up on choosing- Stuck Between; Winds of Plague, Sky Eats Airplane, Atreyu, Bullet For My Valentine, A Day To Remember and many others.

Only 5 bands?! That's cruel
But here we go (NOTE: there's no particular order):

-) Foo Fighters - 'Dave Grohl is the second coming of Jesus!'; it's true, he kinda looks like him, but that's not the point. He actually managed to create something fresh that isn't compared to Nirvana anymore and that's a real achievement since Kurt's band was damn popular.
Favourite song(s) (these are put in order... sort of): Everlong, Long road to ruin, Tired of you, Times like these, My hero, Best of you (and on... and on... and on)

-) Placebo - Molko and co. are... different? Unique - that's a good word to use. Their songs turn me on, which is also quite odd (the vocals are just inegnious). 'It's in a special way we fuck' - the way it's said gives me a one hot flush, meh
Favourite song(s): Post blue, The bitter end, Song to say goodbye, I know, Blue American

-) Dead Poetic - there's something about them that just attracts me. Strongly. The lyrics, the way they're put together with music - there's something special about them. They seem 'true', less comercialized than other bands (which is probably bullshit, but still). I can't believe the faggots disbanded!
Favourite song(s): Paralytic, Glass in the trees, New medicines, In coma, Pretty, pretty, Hostages, Molotov (I like, pretty much, all of their songs [especially the newest ones])

-) Sonic Syndicate - it's my gay ex's fault; he made me listen to them and it remained till now (not our relationship, of course). Best characteristic? The way their guitars destroy your ear drums. 'So really very nice' (four words my english teacher detests; in your face!)
Favourite song(s): Denied, Double agent 616, Aftermath, Enclave, Unknown entity, Psychic suicide

-) Snow Patrol - I simply admire them. For no apparent reason, okay? I can listen to their songs over'n'over'n'over again without getting bored, okay? It's like magic but not.
Favourite song(s): Chasing cars, It's beginning to get me, Engine, Shut your eyes, Hands open, Set the fire to the third bar, Headlights on the dark road

The reason why I haven't included Led Zeppelin is because - they aren't my favourite band. I mean, I've grown up on them. They're an integral part of my life - they're like oxygen for me and it's all my half-sharp father's fault (really, making me listen to Plant and co. was the best thing he ever did for me); I listen to literally a thousand of different bands and I adore all of them... but rules are rules.

These are in no particular order, as they all have different styles:

1. Maximum the Hormone

There's a disclamer to this, as I don't like a lot of the earlier albums. It's only with the newest release that I've gotten to like them, with a sound that seems like J-rock crossed with metal worthy of System of a Down and a mixture of clean and growling vocals.

Favorite Songs:
Zetsubuo Billy
Shimi
What's Up, People!
Louisiana Bob
Healthy Bob

2. Nightwish

Smaller disclaimer: I like both singers. I've grown to love symphonic power metal, and this manages to provide a good mix of the two while having probably one of the top five male power metal vocalists out there.

Favorite Songs:
Wish I Had an Angel
Ghost Love Score
Poet and the Pendulum
Bye Bye Beautiful
The Kinslayer

3. Serj Tankian

I'm a mild fan of System of a Down, but that was mostly for Serj's excellent voice, and his solo work allows his voice to shine in more melodic compositions.

Favorite Songs:
Sky Is Over
Empty Walls
Baby
Beethoven's Cunt
Chop Suey! (Done with SoaD)

4. Rammstein

Again, I love the lead singer's voice. Till Lindemann is an awesome singer, and the power of the German language amplifies it. Meanwhile, the varying metal sound backs it up nicely.

Favorite Songs:
Mein Herz Brennt
Asche Zu Asche
Morgenstern
Eifersucht
Rosenrot

5. Demon Hunter

Excellent melodic metalcore with mixed growls and clean vocals.

Favorite Songs:
Thorns
Storm The Gates of Hell
Not Ready to Die
Science of Lies
Beheaded

Others are: Haggard, Adagio, Blue Man Group, Apocalyptica, Warmen, Korpiklanni, Therion, Tarot.

Alright, time for another update.

The Beatles - I cannnot accurately describe in words why I love them so much.

Talking Heads - Managed to perfectly balance pop and avant-garde sounds.

Led Zeppelin - Needs no explanation.

The Decemberists - Can somehow make feel happy while they're singing about drowned sailors and child murderers. It's weird.

Scary Kids Scaring Kids - Something with them just seem to click with me.

1. Blink 182 - Been a fan since 5th grade and never got tired of them. Pop-punk at its finest.
Favorite albums: Dude Ranch, Enema Of The State, Cheshire Cat

2. Green Day - Another band I've been in love with since 5th grade. Even though I'm not a fan of American Idiot or anything they've done since their old material is enough to secure them at a top spot.
Favorite albums: Dookie, Insomniac, 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours

3. Modest Mouse - Best indie band I've ever heard.
Favorite albums: Lonesome Crowded West, This Is A Long Drive, Building Nothing

4. Ween - The most bizarre and creative band I know.
Favorite albums: The Mollusk, Chocolate and Cheese, Quebec

5. The Clash - The most diverse punk band I know. Classic.

2.Mindless Self Indulgence - Interesting sound, great lyrics in general, great sound, pretty much just awesome.
Favorite Songs: Bullshit, I Hate Jimmy Page, Shut Me Up, Issues, Tornado

3.Dead Kennedys - Classic hardcore punk.
Favorite Songs: Hope With the Jet Set, California Uber Alles, Anarchy For Sale, Hyperactive Child, Buzzbomb

4.The Weakerthans - Some of the best lyrics I've ever heard.
Favorite Songs: Our Retired Explorer, Tournament of Hearts, Aside, (Manifest), Aside, New Name For Everything

5.The Vandals - Just a funny, funny punk band.

Led Zeppelin - The ultimate hard rock band, they're perfect.
The Beatles - I shouldn't even have to explain myself.

1. Radiohead - Genius songwriting, Thom Yorke has an amazing voice. Mostly it's the fact that they've been consistently brilliant over a long career, which is rare for any band. Their best songs are mind-blowing.

2. Bjork - Beautiful voice, primal bassy rhythms, very unique musical style. Some tracks can be annoying, and for some reason these are usually the most popular, but they are drowned out by the vast majority of beautiful soulful tracks. She has some searingly honest and beautiful songs.

3. Jeff Buckley - He may be dead and only released one album in his lifetime, but Jeff Buckley is a musical god. His voice is unparalleled and his skill in songwriting and guitar are so raw and natural. It's like he grew up with and was taught by all the great blues legends. If I could choose to have the musical talent of anyone in the world, it would be him. Grace is a perfect album.

4. Sigur Ros - Very unique, multilayered, complex but subtle, and heavenly music. Again an amazing voice, and I love the 'big band' sound of multitudes of instruments, all in harmony with each other. Very powerful. Tons of amazing tracks.

5. Smashing Pumpkins - This was my favourite band growing up in my teens, and they are still a huge musical influence. The unstable, honest, raw nature of their early music is very powerful. They sold out a bit towards the end, but their first 5 or so albums are amazing. So much talent mixed with so much raw emotion and angst make for explosive and hauntingly beautiful music.

Racer X- i'm a sucker for cheesy 80's hair metal and a nice bit of shred
Favourite songs- Scarified, Technical Difficulties, Miss mistreated

Necrophagist- they cross death metal with neoclassical guitaring with what seems to be significant ease and skill

Led Zeppelin - The ultimate hard rock band, they're perfect.
The Beatles - I shouldn't even have to explain myself.
Pearl Jam - Although Nirvana is more influentual, Pearl Jam I think was better.
Foo Fighters - Dave Grohl is just an absolute genius.
No. 5 is tied with:
U2
Radiohead
Jack Johnson

No order:
Wire- Not very well known band from the 70s. Their album Pink Flag is just awesome, the songs are mostly 1-3 minutes, and they're just raw guitar/bass/drums. I'm surprised that more people don't know about them.
The Libertines- Great band, they bring back some of the old style punk but also bring in some modern style. They change styles throughout each song and are so fresh and aggressive...seemingly under appreciated band as well.
The Pixies- All of the Pixies' songs are so fierce, its sounds like they were all recorded in a garage. A lot of the lyrics are very interesting, and the singer just makes the band too. Awesome..
Radiohead- Not only are their songs great to listen to just for their melodies, their lyrics are so deep and each album has its own theme which is great. Thom Yorke has a great voice, very soft and creepy sometimes.
Clash- Pretty much the definition of old punk rock. Their first album (The Clash) was amazing because of its anger and stuff, but London Calling took it up to whole new level in terms of lyrics and musical style. Definitely shows that punk rock can have huge amounts of depth.
H. mention:
Belle & Sebastian
Dead Kennedys
Sex Pistols
Spoon

Soulfallen - Just intense......intense and key-heavy
Mors Principuim Est - the first melodic death metal band i really got into, thier music just stuck with me.

Sum 41
Perfect mix of energy, political righteousness and fun. They must be the masters of punk rock ever since Half Hour of Power.
Green Day
From American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown, they have an awesome political feel about them. And their earlier stuff just rocks.
System of a Down
Masters of metal, with a great sound between hilarity with banana terracotta pie, and politics in boom. Also Serj Tankian, lead singer, his solo career is just as good.
Breaking Benjamin
Heavy, but emotional, angry, but sad. Their feel is just amazing. Ben Burnley has the most awesome voice I have ever heard.
AND THERE ARE SO MANY MORE I CAN NOT NAME.

1] Dream Theater: People who say all their songs are complete instrumental wankeries have obviously not listened to the songs fully enough. Yes they're extremely talented, and they're not afraid to show it off, but they actually do have good song structure and meaningful lyrics. Try listening to a couple of their ballads. The Spirit Carries On is one of the most powerful songs I've ever listened to.
Favourites songs:Endless Sacrifice, Wait For Sleep, Learning to Live, In the Name of God, and yes, Pull Me Under.

2] Porcupine Tree: I love this band so much. A few of their songs might have buildups that last forever but when you let the songs take their place as a whole, they can really move you and take you places emotionally. Really good stuff.
Favourite songs: Arriving Somewhere But Not Here, Trains, Shallow, Deadwing, Lazarus

3] Vertical Horizon: When I first listened to them, I thought they were 'too soft' and one of their songs appearing on One Tree Hill didn't help that notion. But I gave them a chance, listened to a bit more of their stuff and now I'm totally hooked. I pretty much like all their songs, whereas with most bands it's a bit pic'n'mix. Really good and can really move you.
Favourite songs: Miracle, Everything You Want, Goodbye Again, Forever, It's Over, Give You Back

4] Opeth: They're two halves really. They can make some good lounge music when they're quiet and when they get heavy and growly, it's like the soundtrack of Hell itself. The singer pulls off both clean and dirty vocals with aplomb and almost every song is a 10 minute epic with loads of style switches.
Favourite songs: In my Time of Need, Serenity Painted Death, Death Whispered A Lullaby, Face of Melinda, The Grand Conjuration

5] Third Eye Blind: Their music is probably in every Teen movie imaginable but it doesn't stop them from being a really moving listen. Funny how most of my favourite bands are Alternative Rock when I'm a huge Progressive Metal nut. Having songs with colourful lyrics and "the four right chords that can make me cry" helps too.
Favourite songs: How's it Gonna Be, Semi-Charmed Life, Deep Inside of You :heya:, God of Wine, Never Let You Go, Danger, Jumper

It was very hard to pick because I listen to a load of artists. Plus, seeing as there were only so many to pick out, I refrained from the usual suspects like Metallica and Megadeth. Variety is good.

Symphony X: The Damnation Game, Death Of Balance, Dressed To Kill, Paradise Lost..

Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster
You can't beat southern hardcore! Maylene are a really good band to sit back and listen to with a few beers, on a sunny afternoon outside your trailer.

I saw these guys live just because they were on a tour I was seeing and the live show sucked ass. I can't say much about the music, though.

Incidentally, that instrumental band you mentioned sounds worth checking out. I dislike 80-90% of singers' voices, so I listen to a good amount of instrumental and orchestral soundtrack music.

1). Dying Fetus

Brutal. Just brutal. I've yet to get punched in the face by listening to their music yet but I know it's going to happen soon.

2). Mastodon

Some of the most technical music i've heard in a long time.

3). Lamb of God

Also some technical music, something else draws me to them, but I don't know what.

4). Meshuggah

If these guys aren't technical, I don't know what is.

5). iwrestledabearonce

I thought I've posted in here, but I guess not. This list changes all the time, but here's the basic rundown:

1. Dear and The Headlights - Wonderful melodies with great vocals and lyrics that gets me singing along everytime I hear a song.

2. Los Campesinos! - Upbeat, addictive mayhem that makes me want to dance around the room. At first I couldn't stand the vocals, but now I wouldn't change them in anyway.

3. Broken Social Scene - I wasn't the biggest fan of them until last summer when I saw them play live and it absolutely blew me away. Ever since I've listened to them a bunch and love any song. They can make a song as gay as "I'm Still Your Fag" and still somehow make me sing along.

4. The Dears - Their CD "Gang Of Losers" was one of those CDs that changed my opinion on music forever and I've held them close ever since. Mellow sounds, with emotional vocals that I love everytime I hear them.

5. The Silent Years - It's hard for me to pick a fifth favourite, but apparently my Zune software has them as my fifth most top listened band, so I'm going to put them here. Simple lyrics, vocals and melodies that I could listen to over and over.

1. The Dead Kennedys- DK's have produced some of the most thought compelling, political yet not overbearing punk music ever. DK's broke many musical and political barriers, without trying to act cool or badass. Forget about Greenday, Sum 41 and that faggy lot.

2. Naked Raygun. Lesser known Chicago Punk band with an amazing sound and feel to them, I'll never understand why they aren't more widely recognized. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFWeTDzdVzM

3. The Pixies- inspired Nirvana (and still are much better than), just a great, very unique rock and roll band.

4. The clash- gave punk a much deeper meaning, Joe Strummer in particular.

5. Couldnt decide: Broken Social Scene, crystal casteles, flogging molly, operation ivy, or pink floyd.. sorry to be vague but theres just too many

This is going to be difficult, I tend not to play favourites.

1: (Tie) Opeth and Mastodon
Two bands that create absolutely awesome music. Blood Mountain and Blackwater park tie for my favourite albums.

2:Black Sabbath
The band that first got me into music in general, and way, way ahead of their time. The Ozzy years were defiantly my favourite.

3:Frank Zappa
A musical genius, and a massive influence on me. Great taste in facial hair.

4: Carcass
They released Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious, one of the best Death Metal albums ever made, and their solos and lyrics are excellent.

5: King Crimson
Pioneers or progressive music, insane musicians, and lovely music.

2. Pink Floyd

3. Led Zeppelin
Rock 'n' roll at its best.

4. Metallica

5. System of a Down

The Evens
Ian Mackeye's current band while on hiatus from Fugazi. The mixture of simple guitar riffs and some great drumming from the Amy Farina. The lyrics are pretty great. Good simple commentary on the times.
Anthony Green
I recently acquired his solo album Avalon and I must say hes a very diverse artist. I've always enjoyed his voice even back when he was in Saosin, whichwas only for a short time back when they first appeared.
At The Drive-In
Very good technical band. After they broke up most of them formed Mars Volta. This is some really good Progressive like Post-Hardcore.
Dinosaur Jr.
Just started listening to them again. Need to go pick up Farm when it comes out. What I've heard off of it is amazing. Maybe the best work they've been in a very long time. Lou Barlow is back in the band and I must say he and Mascis work very well together.
Conor Oberst
He has always drawn comparisons to Bob Dylan, but his recent stuff with the Outer South Band is the closest hes come to really sounding like him. Really great songwriting and amazing music that draws influences from all over.

This is more of a current favorites list. I like too much music to really make a list that wouldn't be prone to a lot of change.

1. of Montreal
Epic, elaborate pop/indie/groove/funk/rock/vaudeville/twang ensemble full of incredible songwriting and stage shows that regularly include mad genius/frontman Kevin Barnes in motherfucking hot pants. Enough said.
2. Soul Coughing
Alternative jazz-hip-hop-rock band featuring Mike Doughty, one of the greatest lyricists ever. The band (until they broke up in 2000) never failed to put out some catchy; all three of their albums are weirdly awesome and I recommend each one of them to everybody.
3. Pixies
Hell, they influenced Smells Like Teen Spirit, and have Radiohead, PJ Harvey, U2, David Bowie, etc. as fans. Their music pretty much turned me on to alternative rock and every style spawned from that genre. It's aggressive and innovative for its time, and all four members have mad skills. Their music is brilliant, basically.
4. Violent Femmes
Folk-punk wittiness at its best. Most songs are sarcastically bitching about teenage angst. Gordon Gano then turned to writing songs about Jesus and religion, which lost over half of the band's fanbase. Hell, they're still awesome.
5. Neutral Milk Hotel
The reason I adore this band can be explained by the masterpiece that is In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, particularly the songs "Oh Comely", "Holland 1945", and "Two-Headed Boy".

Because of my nerdiness, I have to keep a list of my top 40 favorite bands. My honorable mentions section of it is already exceeding 100. I like music.

At the moment my favourites would have to be..

Ludo - Only recently discovered these guys, but they are just awesome. The lead singer, Andrew Volpe, has one of the best voices I've ever heard. My favourite song by them would be 'The Horror Of Our Love'. It's dark and has a creepy vibe to it but it's strangely romantic also.. Not easy to pull off, but they do it.

Atreyu - Atreyu were the first ever metal band I listened to, and I've loved them for years now. Alex Varkatzas and Brandon Saller are brilliant together. Favourite songs would be 'When Two Are One', 'The Crimson' and 'Lipgloss and Black'.

Weezer - I can't say exactly what it is about Weezer, but whenever I hear them, my day is just better. God knows why. Favourite is 'Pork and Beans'.

I Set My Friends On Fire - Absolutely intense. They're original experimental metal that I've never heard before, and I love it. My favourites are 'But The Nuns Are Watching...', 'WTFWJD', 'Reese's Pieces, But I Don't Know Who John Cleese Is' and 'Ravenous, Ravenous Rhinos'.

Vanna - Vanna aren't well-known, but they are amazing. They've been described as 'Riff-laden metalcore with subtle, goose bump-inducing melodies and choruses to die for' by a magazine called Rock Sound. I couldn't describe them better. Favourite songs are 'We Are Nameless', 'We Ate The Horse You Rode In On' and 'Trophy Wives'.

Because I listen to a lot of different music, these will probably have changed by next week, but oh well. :)

Oh fuck yeah. I've had all their albums for a while, but hadn't listened to them all fully. When Two Are One randomly shuffled on my iPod, and I've been in love since, it's definitely one of my favourite songs at the moment. Demonology and Heartache has always been a favourite of mine by them.

Red Hot Chili Peppers-There music is a perfect mix between Funk,Alternative, and hip hop(earlier stuff). I actually hated these guys at first but i heard Dani California and Snow((Hey Oh)) and i picked up Stadium Arcadium and have been a fan since then. I now have all their albums

Favorite Song:This Velvet Glove(Californication) or This is the Place(By the Way)

Metallica-I heard these guys only like 6 years ago when my dad played For Whom the Bell Tolls in his car. I've sen them once and im going again in November

Favorite Song: Fuel(Reload)

Ozzy Osbourne-Enough Said

Favorite song:Mr.Crowley

Iron Maiden-These guys along with Judas Priest and Black Sabbath made metal what it is today

Judas Priest- Everyone in this band just clicks and makes kick ass music.

apparantly i did this wrong before...
so top 5

New Found Glory - Loved them for years. Catchy, upbeat songs, can't say anything bad about them (except coming home). They combine cool riffs with melodic vocals with the occasional unforgetable hook, awesome.
Favourite Tracks: Passing Time, Head On Collision, All Downhill Form Here, Dressed To Kill and Forget My Name

Better Luck Next Time - Similar reasons to why i love NFG. The guitar melody's just sound brilliat, lyrics are pretty cool too. They just have so much energy in their music, it was a great day when i found them.
Favourite Tracks: Motionless, Second Chances, Shoebox Memories, Broken Hearts Delight and Anything Less Than The Best

Zebrahead - The best combinaition between punk and rap. There lead guitarist can wack out solo's that couldn't be more perfect for the songs they are in, the lyrics are often brilliant, and in genral its just good upbeat happy music.
Favourite Tracks: Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right But Three Rights Make A Left, Mental Health, Postcards From Hell, Blindside and Check

The Lawrence Arms - I can say without a doubt that these are the greatest and most underrated band ever. There last four albums (one was a b-side album) do no not have a single song that let them down, how many bands can do that? Most of the song are energetic punk rock though they sometimes slow it down, but this is never a bad thing. There guitar riffs are simple yet seem so clever, just like the lyrics which very commonly blow me away. They are just genrally a brilliant band.
Favourite Songs: Right As Rain Part 2, Overheated, Beyond The Embarrasing Style, Cut It Up, Fireflies and The Ramblin' Boys Of Pleasure.

AFI - This is an incredible band. There sound has changed so much throughout their career but it has always been brilliant. I prefer the raw punk rock sound of their earlier work such as the album 'Very proud of ya' but it was the power of the 'Black sails in the sunset' album that first caught my attention. Its hard to say what is great about the band as they are constantly changing, but I do appreciate the talent of the solo guitarist producing all the riffs required to drive them, and Daveys unique vocals just add so much too them.
Favourite Songs: The Prayer Position, This Secret Ninja, Charles Atlas, Synthesia and Paper Airplanes (Makeshift Wings)

Radiohead
Literally, probably the greatest band ever and my favorite. I can listen to Radiohead all day, and in fact I do. But then I feel guilty and sometimes listen to other bands, but mostly its just Radiohead. Thom Yorke is undeniably a genius.

Explosions in the Sky
Amazing band. So sonically emotional and dynamically romantic. Just like their music, I can't use words to describe them.

Animal Collective
Although every single wannabe hipster likes Animal Collective now because of their new album, I still love them. Old stuff, new stuff, all of it. The only downside is nobody will let me play them in the car.

I don't have any more definite favorites.

Tool - because they're fucking badass. I love listening to their songs and I know that they're my favorite band because whenever I get bored of their songs, I stop listening, but a few weeks/months later I go back and enjoy them all over again.

Radiohead - really mellow shit, it's awesome. It's not something I'm always in the mood for but when I am it is just great music.

Nine Inch Nails - very good music. I don't know what genre it would be in, but I like it. None of their albums sucked and fuck you if you think With Teeth or something was bad.

Velvet Underground - only one of the classic 60's/70's bands that I like basically all of their albums.

Porcupine Tree -ok fuck it I ran out of bands but this one is still good. I'm rarely ever in the mood for their music but it's undeniably good.

You like metalcore, which is a terrible blasphemy unto metal, as well as being utter crap, and creating most of the negative generalisations the general public make about metal. Pretending to like something when you don't even understand it makes you a poser.

Meh, those are your tastes.

C'mon guys, really?

Anybody that thinks Slipknot is that crazy/heavy is forgivable. You are obviously entry level metalheads. In two years time you will realize how wrong you are.

Don't be a faggot, metalcore isn't terrible. The reason you hate it is because you're a metal elitist who's pissed off at metalcore being defined as metal, and showcased more than actual metal these days.

I never said they were their best songs you shitdick. That is what we call an opinion. And they're as entitled to theirs as you or I are ours.
I'm merely saying that those songs ARE real Metallica, where you said they weren't. Which, of course, implies that you think Metallica were no longer 'real' after Cliff, as that's what those songs have in common, and how the songs you mentioned are different.
Which, in turn, implies you would disregard those albums.

All Nightmare Long is probably one of the best songs off Death Magnetic, hence why I thought you were against that album. And despite it being whored out it's asscheeks, Sandman is still a decent song. So if you like that album, I don't see your beef with it. Most Metallica fans don't like it purely to having heard it too much.

If you think Sandman, Fuel, and All Nightmare Long are the best songs, you are obviously not aware of the other stuff.

Do you have Downs or something? I clearly said I DID NOT THINK THAT. I'm just saying they're entitled to their opinions. Also, what you just posted is very not true. For one, no one's saying 'best' songs, we're saying 'favourites'. Bit of a difference, in that best would usually imply musical ability and such, whereas favourite means the song the person feels they connect to the most, and that defines their thoughts and feelings of the band.

Which, in case you're unable to work out (which I assume is probably a very likely case), means that it's entirely subjective and relevant only to that person.

Long story short; you're trying to force them to like the songs you like, which is not dissimilar to telling a metalhead that they should only like country & western music.

I'm sorry, I assumed that because you stated that the Strokes were an English band that you assumed you were a fan and just just named a few of the 'popular' Arctic Monkeys songs. I, Sir or Madam, am not a fraud or a liar and do not like to be treated as such. Yes, I have made a few innocent mistakes, however they were only as a result of being misinformed. Maybe you think that Reptilia was one of their best songs, but I certainly do not. I like Hard to Explain and Is This It because I can relate to them. I am not a fan however, because some fans can get obsessive (no offense); I on the other hand am a 'well-wisher.' Oh, one last thing, did you realize that maybe those songs are the most popular because many people (including me) like them?
I'd very much appreciate it if you left me alone because I only posted on this thread so that people might see if they enjoy listening to those bands as much as I do, not to be criticized by someone. Thank you.
P.S. What kind of a fan are you if you use Wikipedia? That's just sad...

1. The Libertines(and the following bands like babyshambles...)
Just pure geniuses and actually life in my time. They brought the punk back into garage-revival and I can´t say anything else but that I am a devoute fanboy.
2. The Smiths
Morissey is the only one who can be whiny without sonding like an emo. The Smiths are also one of these bands were technical mastership (Marr´s guitar and Morissey´s singing) meet poetry and great songwriting
3. The Jam
Good ole Mod/Punk/Power Pop music. Not much to say just give it a try if you like bands from the 70s and 60s and those who sound like these
4.The Strokes
It´s easier to listen to than the Velvet Underground. I actually think that the Velvet Underground are great but I couldn´t listen to them for a week without a pause
5. The Only Ones
Also a 70s punk band but not that "urgh I´m so angry on society and hate is the only feeling I have". It has also some psychodelic elements. All in all a cool band

So if the bands genres are subgenres of metal, if you were to define them to a genre (as opposed to a subgenre), wouldn't that then be metal?

And it sounds as if you're implying the bands you named are metal, with metal being another subgenre of the genre metal.

Kinda random, some a bit obscure...

1. Keane- I love the lyrics mostly and the general imagery put into each song.
2. Stellastarr*- the way they intertwine the lead male singer and the female background singer adds a whole new demension to the vocals...and again, love the imagery of the lyrics.
3. Blind Melon- Always happy making. The end.
4. Transplants- The actual music gets me hyped up and then the singing pisses me off, perfect for working out and stuff :)
5. Steve Miller Band- Simply made of win. I really can't give much more of a reason :p

Might as well contribute.

Arctic Monkeys - One of the best Indie/Garage Rock bands in my opinion, probably one of the most successful, behind 'The Killers' that is.
Favorite Song - Mardy Bum. can't help but tap my desk whenever this song comes on. Their greatest song.

The Kooks - I don't care what some people say, in my opinion they are the definitive Indie Rock band, with some of the best songs I have ever heard.
Favorite Song - Sway. not one of the most well known songs, but it does appear on the radio every now and then, and I catch myself singing every time it comes on.

Ok Go - First heard them on youtube, watching that awesome video clip for 'Here it Goes Again', and haven't stopped liking them since. I'm fairly sure they have a new album on the way soon as well.
Favorite Song - Here it Goes Again. it just has to be, everyone that hears this song, that I know, has enjoyed it. It is just one of those songs.

The Wombats - Saw them at a gig years ago. Easily one of my favourite bands of all time. I'm holding out for a new album, which I'm hoping will be just as good.
Favorite Song - Moving to New York. Their opening song at the gig, and my favourite of theirs hands down. This song always appears in my playlist.

We Are Scientists - Been listening to them for quite a while. Ever since I went to one of their gigs I haven't stopped listening.
Favorite Song - Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt. Just can't get enough of it. One of my favourite song introductions. This song just has to be heard.

Edit:The Strokes should be in there. Somewhere.

Favorite Song- Tough one..... i like around 20 of their songs..

Metallica- ok ok ok, i like metallica from Kill Em' All to Death Magnetic, They are still just as metal as they were 20 years ago. R.I.P. Cliff Burton.
Favorite Song- Easy, Master of Puppets.

Iron Maiden- w00t IM! one of the best of the Brit-Metal movement.
Favorite Song- The Number of the Beast. I like alot of their songs, but this one just stands out to me.

Rush- The Canadian Prog-Rock band with Geddy Lee the singer-bassist-keyboardist, one of greatest drummers ever Neil Peart, and a guitarist Alex Lifeson. sweett...
Favorite Song- YYZ (pronounced why-why-zed, ya know, cuz they're canadian)

Van Halen- Eddie, Alex, Wolfgang, the Van Halens (and David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar) The Frankenstien guitar will live on.
Favorite Song(s)- Eruption/You Really Got Me, Jump, Why Cant This be Love, Hot for Teacher, Runnin with the Devil.

2. Modest Mouse - I enjoy these guys so much. Brock's drunken lyrics make me smile. Favorite song: Tiny Cities Made of Ashes

3. Beck - This man is amazing. He somehow manages to take random noises and turn them into something crazy. In a good way. And I don't care if he a scientologist. Favorite song: Girl

4. Cake - One of my favorite bands, I absolutely love John McCrea's speaking/singing. I can't believe I missed them when they came up here. Favorite song: Nugget

5. The Raconteurs - I always liked The White Stripes, but The Raconteurs just seemed more... I dunno, complete? Jack White turns everything he touches into musical gold. Favorite song: These Stones Will Shout

Death - If you like metal and you don't like Death, you obviously have a shit taste in metal. From low growls about death to high pitched yells about a moment of clarity, Death has the best discography out of any band. Mind blowing guitar riffs and drums to orgasmic solo's. Easily one of my favorite bands.

Dismember - Swedish Death Metal is a wonderful and this band explains why. Heavily distorted guitars mixed with tremolo picking that has blast beats in the backround while the singer is yelling with such a fury makes this band have a spot in my top 5.

Devin Townsend/The Devin Townsend Band/The Devin Townsend Project - This man inspired me to take up playing guitar, he made me love music for what it really was. He showed me how to put emotion into music and love doing it. This guy is wonderful at song writing and guitar, his line up always seems to be top notch too.

Zimmers Hole - Greatest comedy band ever. Lyrics are hilarious while the riffs are crushing in the backround with the drums pounding away. The vocalist is no joke either, his vocals range is amazing for a singer.

Old Man's Child - Is it bad to like a band for one album? I've listened to all their albums but none of them quite captured my ear like Ill-Natured Spiritual Invasion. Every single song off that album is amazing, it's my favorite album. The symphonic instruments and tremolo picking mixed with the continuous blasting of the drums are a perfect match in this piece of music. I love this band just for producing this album.

Death Chuck Shulidner's musical genius combined with Gene Hoglan's unrivaled drumming, I'd say this is the most influential band in existence.
Notable songs: Crystal Mountain, Spirit Crusher, The Philosopher, 1,000 eyes.

Eluveitie I'm a sucker for Folk Metal, especially the good stuff.
Notable songs: Inis Mona, Grey Sublime Archon, Your Gaulish War, Omnos.

Ackercocke I'm a huge fan of Black metal and Death metal, and these guys are the perfect combination of both.
Notable songs: Leviathan, Scapegoat

Bolt Thrower Name a better Death Metal band. I dare you. These guys have been running on for 23 years, and not fucking up. Their songs are quite similar, as they are mostly in the same key, and are generally based in harmonic minor scales, but it's a great listen.
Notable songs: Powder Burns, Tank (MK1), The IVth Crusade.

Annihilator Jeff Waters has been running this band on his own for 20 years, and has been amazingly successful. He can easily be named a guitar god.
Notable songs: Alison Hell, King of the Kill, Human Insecticide, Schizos are Never Alone

I'll toss in honorable mentions while I'm at it:
Megadeth
Sepultura (Early, not their new groove shit.)
Sonata Arctica (for their first two albums)
Turisas
Rumpelstiltskin Grinder
Nile (it's not bad)
Outworld
Nevermore
Morbid Angel
Kreator
Mayhem
Burzum
Ensiferum
Children of Bodom (for Something Wild and Hatebreeder)
Amon Amarth
Bloodbath (amazing, pure death metal )
Jig-Ai. Say what you will about Grindcore, but this is honestly the best there is.

Buckethead's Solo work.

Scope DJ - Makes ridiculous good kicks and basslines, and his melodies are epin, as well. especially fond of his Weird, jumpy leads.
Fave. song: Rock Hypnotic.

Endymion - Great, fast paced beats that knock your skull out. Love the samples used in the songs for atmosphere - always something spooky or aggressive, but with a flair of revolution.
Fave. Song: Power of Knowledge.

Kataklysm - I love their old school stuff, all the way up until before their newest album (they're becoming sell outs, imo.) Saw 'em live and witness them fail at forming a wall of death. But that's okay, they were still amazing.
Fave. Song: Face the Face of War.

Infected Mushroom - Drugs, Synths, live drums, and fun lyrics? I'm sold. Infected Mushroom has something that most bands don't. Combining Psytrance with a various amount of influences - ranging from rock, to metal, to hip hop or cultural music - whatever it is, they make it fit, and it always has their own little Infected Mushroom flair.
Fave. Song: Eat it Raw

The Cure: Always been a favourite of mine, and I'm learning a lot of songs on bass. Robert Smith is a genius and I wish I could see 'em live. They're songs have a certain hypnotism - especially when illegal substances are involved. :D
Fave. Song: A Forest.

The majority of music I listen to, although, consists of Hardstyle, Psytrance, Hardcore (techno), Industrial, and EBM.

Korn- The way they grunt is fantatstic.

Paramore- Hayley williams is hot.

Mettalica- Do I need a reason?

The pixies- Singing songs about mutilation and pot in a happy way. Not many bands can do that and sound so good.

Richard cheese- Lounge and blues sovers of mainly metal songs. Somehow, he makes them sound like they should be lounge music.

Clutch Always reinventing their sound, but consistently have unique and interesting lyrics. Interesting never seems like a compliment to me, but I actually love reading up on their lyrics. Their songs derive from everything to mythology to history to random pop culture.

Tool Duh.

Black Sabbath Also, duh.

Sublime Fun to listen to, fun to sing, good times all around.

Holy shit, all of this banning for not giving reasons makes me feel as if I'm at school.
But with the thread and what not.

1. Metallica - Many classic albums, with songs that you could listen to over and over again.
2. Bullet for my valentine - Saw them live, was actually insane.
3. Pantera - Groovy metal.
4. Slipknot - It's Joey Jordison that gets me, no one can physically drum that fast.
5. Slayer - It's as if the band are on crack the whole time.

Here's someone who CAN drum much faster and better than Joey Jordison.
Dariusz "Daray" Brzozowski. Check out one of his songs. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXzESffB9ZM)

Joey Jordison literally cannot do anything in comparison to this guy. And fast definitely doesn't mean good. :facts:

Hmm... I'll have to go with: (In no particular order)

Haste The Day - Melodic chorus' and plenty of band members doing vocals, along with a drummer who seems to know exactly how to compliment the rest of the band make their music awesome and (for me) infinitely entertaining. Albeit, Pressure The Hinges is the only album I actively listen to.

Eyes Set To Kill - This band has recently captured me because of the wonderful riffing done in most of the songs they've made. But what I enjoy the most about these guys, is the female on lead vocals (along with a male on high-pitched screams). The mixture of singing and screaming is supported well by female vocals.

blessthefall - An awesome metalcore who have recently gone through some member changing, after kicking out the lead vocalist, Craig Mabbitt, who moved on to Escape The Fate. The combination of catchy riffs and heavy chords and breakdowns makes for an awesome combination. The vocals from Craig were always amazing. His range of voice was spectacular, even in screams. Now their new singer can't scream so they actually have to get the bassist to do ALL of the screaming for the band. Though the new singer has incredible clean vocals, Craig's were undoubtedly better.

The Misfits - Find me a song on American Psycho or Famous Monsters that's not INCREDIBLEY CATCHY AND AWESOME!

Pendulum - You should know these guys... Really. Incredible Electronica (previously more D&B) group that does incredible music. End of story.

The Beatles- because none of your crappy genres would exist without them. Also just in general moving lyrics.

Against Me!- because I feel they sing about the problems that the freethinkers think about.

Avenged Sevenfold- Singing about religion and politics without shoving it down your throat or taking sides is cool. Also Synyster plays the most badass solos

Sublime- Transcending set in lines and expectations, and being fucking cool while doing it. God I wish Bradley Noell was still around.

Flogging Molly- following their heritage and singing politics without taking sides.

You'd have to be insane to like something that awful.

4. Slipknot - It's Joey Jordison that gets me, no one can physically drum that fast.

He's go no style whatsoever, no charisma or showmanship. In fact, he's only even an average drummer.

Avenged Sevenfold- Singing about religion and politics without shoving it down your throat or taking sides is cool. Also Synyster plays the most badass solos

It doesn't change the pathetic quality of their instrumentation, or their retarded stage names, or the generic style in which they perform. That Synyster douchebag isn't anything special, at all, really.

I believe in this situation, YOU are in fact, (and I quote) The faggot.

Not having horrible taste in music doesn't make you a faggot. Liking the musical equivalent to a golden shower in a filthy Northbridge alley actually makes you a bit more of a faggot. Although, I'm sure real gays aren't as effeminate as most metalcore acts, or their pre-pubescent fans.

Bright Eyes
Conor Oberst writes the most incredible songs ever. So perfectly expressive and honest and raw without being gilded and spoiled by too much production.
Favourite song: A Poetic Retelling Of An Unfortunate Seduction
Smashing Pumpkins
Not much to say other than they're f*cking awesome.
Favourite song: Bodies -for sentimental reasons- or Siva
Cradle Of Filth <3
Dani Filth has the best shrieks I have ever heard. They're songs are really amazingly put together, the lyrics are incredible and the instumentals are great.
I saw them in may. fuck yeah.
Favourite song: Funeral In Carpathia or Midnight Shadows Crawl To Darken Council With Life.
A.F.I
Their older albums are great. Their 2003 album Sing The Sorrow is great too. Some songs are a little over produced but other than that, it's beautiful.
Favourite song: Bleed Black.
Nirvana
Classic.
Favourite song: Milk It.

Michael Hedges - I love pretty much everything he wrote. Aerial Boundaries is my all time favorite album. He was one hell of a musician.

Blind Guardian - I'll be honest here. The vocals are pretty much the sole reason that I listen to them. The vocals are just that good though. They carry the rest of the band. It's not that the other stuff is bad - it's just not stellar.

Iron Maiden - These guys got me into metal. I've been listening for years and they still haven't gotten old. They're god damned legends.

Andy McKee - Like Maiden for metal, Andy got me started in acoustic music. Art of Motion is a work of art. Every song on there is fantastic. If you haven't heard it yet, go listen to some of it on youtube. It's amazing.

Symphony X - I like their slower stuff more than the heavy stuff, but it's all good. Great solos, solid orchestral work, and fantastic vocals all add up to some awesome music.

Oh hey, I'll update this since it's changed.

Avenged Sevenfold - I don't know why, but ever since I got their most recent live DVD I've been in love with the music. They can actually play live, and they have wicked stage presence. They also have a huge diversity in their music, which is awesome.

All That Remains - I don't usually like metal like this, but pretty much every All That Remains song has amazing instrumental work.

Breaking Benjamin - I used to listen to Breaking Ben a lot, and then I kind of stopped, and now here I am again. The lead singer's voice really works well with their music. Don't really like their newest CD a lot, but their older stuff is golden.

Eminem - Not a whole lot to say about this choice, Eminem is an amazing lyricist, and while I'm not a huge fan of the newest stuff he's putting out, he's been consistently great for years now.

Mastodon - This is another case of me not usually being into metal, but Mastodon is fucking great. Any band that can put out an entire concept album based around Moby Dick is pretty awesome. They don't do the typical sprawling metal solos and chugging riffs either, which is kind of nice.

Oh and Ocellatus NOBODY gives a fuck about your musical opinion, that's not what this thread is for, maybe you should go rethink your life before you roll around here thinking you're cool because you listen to such hXc underground anti-mainstream music. Fight the power bro, fight the power.

1. Mastodon

I've been a fan since their second album. They never fail to impress.

2. Iwrestledabearonce

Say what you want about them, they're my favorite new band.

3. Morbid Angel

Classic Death Metal.

4. Cannibal Corpse

Some more classic death metal.

5. Meshuggah

One of the most unique bands out there. Bleed is by far my favorite song. Ever.

Rise Against - Love their style and love what they sing about. Favourite song is Historia Calamitatum.

Against Me - I like this band for pretty much the same reasons as Rise Against, love their style and love what they sing about. Favourite song would have to be Thrash Unreal.

Pendulum - I like their techno and how they mix different styles of music into their songs. Favourite song would have to be Propane Nightmares.

System of a Down - Love their music and have for a long time, enough said. Favourite song is Toxicity.

Thrice - Good songs and their new album makes use of a lot of uncommon instruments. Favourite song is probably either The Artist In the Ambulence or Music Box.

The Prodigy - Prodigy is my favourite techno band and I love listening to their songs on the way to work. Favourite song is Voodoo People.

There is my top 6.

I do have difficulty explaining why I like most of my bands but here we go, in order:

1. The Mars Volta - As I said I cant explain why I love them so much, it could be the amazing muscial element, or the powerful vocals of Cedric. Fav song: Cicatriz ESP
2. Genghis Tron - They are pure insanity, fast song, loud songs, for a band that is only 3 people with no drummer or bassist it's very solid. Fav Song: Board Up The House
3. Deastro - I do try to enjoy all types of music and on the list is definatly Deastro, as a seemless mix of electronic and indie, the songs are catchy and easy to listen to and enjoy over and over. Fav Song: The Goodman Of The House
4. Burzum - To be honest I had just started listening to them (him) and wow, he has some serious talent, sure all the songs are in norwegian, and I cant understand a word he is saying even if it was in english but the muscial element is amazing. Fav Song: Det Som En Gang Var
5. Radiohead - A band that I had first had doubts about had actually turned out to be one of my favorites. The vocals and music work in a perfect harmony to make some truely amazing music. Fav Song: Sail To The Moon. (Brush The Cobwebs Out Of The Sky.)

Applesauce
08-04-2009, 10:07 PM
1. Within Temptation - A more melodic metal. Sharon Den Adel, the lead vocals, has an unbelievably beautiful voice and she knows it. It's very graceful even in their angrier songs such as The Howling, but they can go very sweet in songs like Somewhere. Fav Song: Aquarius
2. Afro Celt Sound System - This is a REALLY creative band! They blend Celtic rhythms with African beats primarily, but they also incorporate techno and hip-hop into their songs. Their songs rarely get old and sometimes they build off of one another. Fav Song: North (Both parts)
3. VNV Nation - To be honest I just discovered them but I instantly fell in love with them, they are exactly the kind of music I've been looking for years. This band is more (I don't know how to put it) serious techno with the vocals dealing with emotions and dealing with them. Fav Song: Chrome
4. Barenaked Ladies - Very lighthearted and happy, this is stuff that can get me out of bad moods. You just can't listen to them without giggling! They don't take things seriously and it tends to grow on you, making you all happy and fluffy! Fav Song- Brian Wilson
5. Slipknot - These are also good for bad moods, but in the opposite sense of Barenaked Ladies. Slipknot takes the bad emotions and bring them to their fullest, making you fuming and ready to jump into a mosh pit fists flying. It's great for letting out excess energy and just sitting around dwelling on your bad moods for a while. Fav Song: Dead Memories

No offence, but if you think this is intense, you've got no idea what you're missing out on. I'd suggest Opeth's Blackwater Park album (no, I can't get over it), Decapitation's The Negation, Cephalic Carnage's Anomalies, Burzum's Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, or Benighted's Icon, for a start.

King Crimson - Because they are totally bad ass and the best prog rock band ever.

Tool - Really great Prog metal/rock band. Probably my favorite band of all time.

Nine Inch Nails - Their industry/techno/rock style music is off the charts. In my opinion they never had a bad album, even With Teeth was good. Actually Ghosts I-IV sucked.

Radiohead - I like their soft music. Very mellow but very powerful.

Velvet Underground - Very nice band

Here is my list.

Whitechapel: These dudes put the Brutal in Brutality. They know how to kick a sweet breakdown and are a major influence to my band.

Metallica: Seriously, think about it.

Job For A Cowboy: Despite the fact that many metalheads hate them, they're still in my top five. They are respectably great musicians in the death metal scene.

Minus The Bear: These dudes know how to get original and create an ambience in their music, it's kept me listening for years.

The Fratellis: With such catchy choruses and well played music, its no wonder they're my five. I've been listening to them for a couple years and every time I hear they're songs, I just can't help but smile.

A Day to Remember- The singer has a cool voice and it sort of contrast the music in a nice way, like his voice is kind of "pop" with rock instrumentals.

Chevelle- Again I love the guys voice, and, to me, they are perfect.

Hollywood Undead- They're pretty unique

Red Hot Chili Peppers - no explanation needed

Kayne West - Do you like fish sticks? yes. You're a gay fish! plus he's a lyrical genius. this is complete b.s. i hate him

Underoath- even though they are a religious band, I just enjoy they're music.

I was a presumptuous cock about my tastes last musical thread, so instead of saying nothing can beat my music, i will just say i don't any thing else better.

1. Gorod - Technical Death Metal. They combine a lot of progressive elements into their music, along with melodies, without sounding like pure wankery. Oh, and their drummer pulls off nice jazzy rhythms.
Favorite song: Blackout

2. Artillery - Thrash Metal. Pioneers of thrash that not everyone has heard of. First two albums were hailed as thrash classics, but I still prefer the latter 3 for the middle-eastern influenced sound. And they of course got better over time.
Favorite song: Cybermind

3. Psycroptic - Technical Death Metal. I've only had one album, "Scepter of the Ancients", but I like what I heard. Their vocalist to me is amazing, but it took some time getting used to his "burp-like" growls.
Favorite song: Lacertine Forest

4. Hieronymus Bosch - Progressive Death Metal. Very creative, and will always hold a place in my heart. One problem though - a lot of the riffs sound like they are played only on the 3rd and 4th strings, palm muted.
Favorite song: Escape from Primitivity

5. Sinners Bleed - Technical Death Metal (very thrash influenced though). It was either this or early Amoral. But this band has one song that I keep going back to, which happens to be my favorite.
Favorite song: Invisible Knowledge

Honorable Mentions:
Atheist, Necrophagist, Cynic, Korpiklaani, Amoral, Diablo Swing Orchestra, and Haggard.

Sorry for being a Tech Death Douche.

1. Interpol Rock/Indie. Haunting, symphonic memories. There's not one stand up person in the group, everything just meshes together perfectly. Favorite Song: Stella was a Diver and She was Always Down (One song)

2. Beirut I've got no idea what genre they are. This band, of 12 people or so, creates such a variety of music it's amazing. They include instruments almost never heard in music nowadays.

3. Radiohead Rock? Thom Yorke's voice is not beautiful, but it is powerful. The whole band meshes together and makes downright beautiful music.

4. Modest Mouse Indie. Modest Mouse is quirky, awkward, and is not for everyone. If, by chance, you grow to like them they have so many songs that all sound so different you are set for life.

5. Arctic Monkeys Rock. I feel like a sellout for saying this, but their songs are happy, and always put me in a good mood. And of course, the accent doesn't hurt.

Okay well I'll give this another go, seeing as how my first account was weeded and because my tastes have changed a little.

because between these two guys I'd have my top 5, Ill just list them along with all their projects:
Jack White-The White Stripes are my favorite band, but just overall anything he does I instantly fall in love with. He plays the blues so well, mostly evident in The White Stripes. He shows he can also drum very well with The Dead Weather, and can write and play entirely different material with the Raconteurs.

Josh Homme-Mostly Queens of the Stone Age. The songs he writes for QOTSA are just so twisted and almost spooky, and I love it. With Eagles of Death Metal, I feel he's letting out more upbeat songs with more roots to just plain old rock n roll. I can't wait to hear material from Them Crooked Vultures, I can already tell that will be another incredible band.

The Hives-One of the only bands I consider a true punk band as far as the music. They play fast, intense, in your face songs that just have an incredible amount of energy.

The Strokes-Julian Casablancas writes great stuff, and with all the solo stuff these guys did out of the band its obvious theres a lot of talent in the band. There isn't much I can say about them, I just think they are a great band.

The last is really a toss up between a few bands, but we'll go with Red Hot Chili Peppers. I love the funk they play, and they all just fuse so well together. I'll never get tired of hearing Flea play bass.

Red Hot Chili Peppers: Always have been a favourite of mine for as long as I remember.
Favourite Song: Quixoticelixer

Jamiroquai: Great jazzy music. I love their earlier stuff from the earlt 90's.
Favourite Song: Space Cowboy/Virtual Insanity (Can't Decide)

System of a Down: Just recently got into them, after I heard Toxicity.
Favourtie Song: Toxicity

Kings of Leon: A good band, although their latest album was dissapointing.
Favourite Song: Slow Night So Long

Alice Cooper: Good shock-rock music. Really dissapointed that I couldn't get tickets to his concert though.
Favourite Song: Welcome To My Nightmare

Alice in Chains: I hate how they are labeled Grunge, and are thrown under the bus with Nirvana when it comes to music. They have a very distinct sound, and not even comparable to any other band that came out of Seattle. I love the metal-blues incorporated into their first album. I love the aggression and angst put into their second album, which is a classic to me. I also love the acoustics and smooth vocals they put on their EP's. Finally, they did one of the best Unplugged albums that MTV ever put out. Even though the lead singer died in 2002, they're finally coming back with a new frontman and so far the singles aren't disappointing.

The Beatles: I can find about 5 songs on every album that they put out that I love. Yes, even their early Pop singles have great tunes. They covered so much ground with their music, and it's just impossible to not have a song from them that you like.

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony: I've found myself straying away from Rap Music and Hip Hop in general. However, I can always go back and listen to these guys without a skip. They're so unique in my opinion, and no one could ever imitate them. They were labeled as nothing but fast rappers, and that just isn't even right. They're not the fastest, and not even close to it, but the speed, vocals, and rap they incorporate is just amazing to me.

Deftones: Chino has so many lyrics that can be conveyed as something else. They're labeled Nu-Metal, and they get a lot of hate for it. But they are way more complex than any other Nu-Metal band out there.

Jodeci: The first 5 songs off their first album is what R&B should be. They had a couple of other great songs on their other records. Not really a favorite because they lack a lot of material, but the songs are timeless for me.

It's been over year since I last did this so here I go again.

Atmosphere -A rap group from Minneapolis. They will probably always be my favorite. Slug can have brag raps, storytelling raps, and raps that make you think. He can do it all. Ant always brings great beats that compliment the raps wonderfully. Favorite Songs: Godlovesugly, Insomnia 411, YGM

Cafe Tacuba - Spanish language band. They play music in whatever genre they feel like and it comes out pretty damn good. They play from pop rock, rap, parodies of Mexican music. Favorite Songs: Las Flores, La Ingrata, Bar Tacuba

Sage Francis - Similar to Atmosphere this guy is intense. He is one of those intellectual rappers and he can freestyle pretty damn well. Favorite Songs: Sea Lion, Narcissist, Slow Down Gandhi

CunninLynguists - The best rap group from the South. They sample a wide rnage of genres and create beautiful music. They have very funny and also very intense lyrics.Favorite Songs: Sunrise-Sunset, Remember Me?, Falling Down, Lynguistsics

The 5th spot is always changing but right now it's

Jack Conte - His songs are short and sweet and an ambush of beautiful sound. I've listened to his songs a ton and they keep that same fresh quality about them.
Favorite Songs: Eat, Freaks and Clowns, These Days, National Anthem (Radiohead Cover)

I don't like listing my favorite but these are my very favorite.

Anyways, my list has changed a bit:

Nick Drake - The Pink Moon album has easily changed my entire outlook on music and how timeless and haunting it can be. Everyone of his songs are beautiful and heartbreaking to listen to.

Robert Taylor - My favorite fingerstylist and my vote for the greatest. He goes from insanely fast to melodic instantaneously, and his songs are so orchestral, even though it is just him playing guitar.

Kaki King - She will never leave my list of favorites. Her music has matured so much over the years, and her melodies are amazing.

Kelli Ruddick - Insanely technical and jazz-oriented, watching her is jaw-dropping. Her songs are a bit harder to listen to than I would like, as they aren't the most melodic pieces, but her ability to play is stunning.

Stephano Barone - Something about this man just gets to me. Amazing fingerstylist who has explored many facets of the style. Great melodic playing and talent overall.

Honorable Mentions: Tool, Radiohead, Soundgarden, Coldplay, Sergio Altamura, Tim Buckley, Erick Turnbull, Squarepusher, Michael Hedges,...

Menomena - Their such a unique band that i've yet to hear any other band that sounds anything close to them. I love both of their albums and i'm dying for them to release their third album next year.
Favorite song: Muscle n' Flo

Streetlight Manifesto - Such fun music to jump around and skank to and even more kickass seeing them live incredibly fun.
Favorite song: Forty Days

That Handsome Devil - If Menomena are unique then That Handsome Devil is one of a kind or really just incredibly fucking awesome. The music sounds like a car crash of 20 different genres and they all mix so well.
Favorite song: Pills for Everything

Atmosphere - Pretty much what Raxo said about slug having such a kickass range in the type of songs they write definitely my favorite rap group and really kickass to see live.
Favorite song: You

Gogol Bordello - Incredibly fun music just incredibly kickass to go crazy to and Eugene has such a manly stache. :hmm:
Favorite song: 60 Revolutions

Honorable mentions - Man Man, Tom Waits, Nick Drake, Dear and the Headlights, Cake, Gnarls Barkley, and Modest Mouse.

Bruce Springsteen: I grew up listening to Springsteen and the E street band. I personally love the simple fact that the band is not simply the basic instruments. He has a special place in my heart as my favorite band.
Favorite song: Born to Run.

Metallica: I got into metal and such later in life but I fell in love with the guitar solos of Kirk Hammett and and James Hetfields vocals.
Favorite song: Master of Puppets.

Pat Benatar: I love Pat Benatar. I made sure to buy all her albums. When she came to my town I made sure to go. She is one of the few female vocalist I enjoy.
Favorite song: Promises in the Dark.

Slayer: Normally I not a big fan of Speed Metal/Thrash metal bands (aside from Metallica and a few others) but the extremely fast, dueling solos of Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman are amazing. Dave Lombardo's skills on drums are again equally amazing.
Favorite song: War Ensemble.

Queen: The band is overall just fun. This is thanks to Freddie Mercury wonderful vocals from which I can only assume was from years of opera training. Along with that is Brian Mays guitar play. These are why Queen is one of my favorite bands.
Favorite song: Don't Stop Me Now.

Hats of!

I think it's about time for an update.

Genesis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XhDHJNuyXw)
Absolutely silly, quirky, playful yet sinister, dark and somehow romantic. The real Genesis is like a slightly less melancholic King Crimson with more focus on storytelling and being English. Great instrumentation as well as lyrics.

Pink Floyd (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3R2PgMiTvw)
Unlike most bands, I like everything put out by the Floyd. Great band that mixes experimentation, blues/jazz, space rock and hard rock. Pink Floyd perhaps isn't the best progressive rock band, but they're at least the third, or second.

Jethro Tull (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ar3NV5lp-74)
The Tull is just like any other prog bands, long songs, concepts, flutes, etc. But I like Jethro Tull because they were just a bit less serious about it all. More python than any other band and yet as skilled as musician and artists.

Samla Mammas Manna (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYf7qO9_MV8)
You probably don't know this band. Samla Mammas Manna is, however, one of the most important bands within avant-garde prog (Rock in Opposition). They sound very much like a instrumental, jazzier version of Frank Zappa.

Gentle Giant (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uu6fmx-xn9A)
Gentle Giant played a strange kind of music that really didn't sound like any other prog. Hard to get into and very, very experimental. Not quite to the avant-garde degree though, but still quite allot more experimental than, let's say King Crimson. Quite like Van Der Graaf Generator.

Other artists I'd love to put here but I'm forced to put under "Honourable Mentions":
King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator, Comus, Tom Waits, The Residents. And I guess Yes.

HIM
Can't really explain it, the sound is just beautiful and the balance of rock, metal and pop with a touch of romantic goth fits my taste perfectly (though my taste is really wide and unbalanced)

Håkan Hellström
Swedish pop. Probably one of the most hated musicians in Sweden due to his weird style and bad vocals. But his fanbase is very strong due to his vocals being characteristic and his lyrics and music being unique.

Avenged Sevenfold
Good songs, good singer, good drummer, good guitarists and great melodies. Metals finest.

Trivium
Same motivation as above.

Backyard Babies
Hard rock inspired by the 70's and 80's. I rarely listen to them these days but they have a special place in my heart. It's like an old best friend. You don't have to see each other every day, it can go months, but when you do nothing have changed.

Stevie Ray Vaughan
Favourite song: Texas Flood
This isn't music this is emotion.

I just love Stevie's sound, just wonderful to listen to.

Foo Fighters
Favourite song: Everlong
Dave is an amazing musician and I have some good memories to Everlong. And live the Foo kick alot of ass, great stage performance.

Deftones
Favourite song: Passenger
Love the cold and gritty feeling in this track also Maynard kicks ass on this track.

What I like about Deftones is the mood they always get me in, some kind of mixed melancholy, cold, angry-mood don't quite know how to explain it.

Disturbed
Favourite song: Perfect insanity
Great guitar riff and great vocal work. I really like Dan Donegan's style. Everybody called Disturbed Nu-metal but it's actually more hard-rock if you take the time to listen to the guitar parts. Really cool stuff there!

The Prodigy
Favourite song: Baby's got a temper
One word: BOOM

I really love the whole discography of the Prodigy from jilted to invaders it's quite diverse. And live they rock! Fuckin amazing show

Right at this very moment in time, I'd say my top 5 artists would have to be:

The Bronx I wasn't such a big fan until about a month or two ago. I saw them live at Leeds and almost crapped my pants at how good the set was. [Three Dead Sisters, History's Stranglers].
Bayside [Advance Letter Goodbye, Dear Your Holiness].
Four Year Strong .
[B]Rise Against [The Good Left Undone, Chamber the Cartridge].
Brand New [Degausser, Jude Law].

What's the difference between favourite and best?

Favourite is your own personal favorite. Like What you find to be good, even if you know others wouldn't agree. Subjective. Best is a more objective term of the greatest bands of all time, not only in terms of sound, but influence, originality, etc. etc.

Uh wow I'm gonna make a revised list ok guys I hope that's ok.

The Format - Nate Ruess is great. He has the kind of voice that can make music original without needing to actually try, but it's not unpleasant.

Fall Out Boy - Don't judge me it's catchy ok

Dead Kennedys - I pretty much grew up listening to them and even though jello biafra is all old and wrinkly his new band is cool.

Owl City - He's basically like the perfect human being and his songs can be cute or actually really pretty, and he has a good voice.

Every Time I Die - Entirely over the top and pretty great. Plus Keith Buckley used to be an english teacher so the references to literature that are in songs sometimes are amusing.

The Maccabees: Great indie band. The singer has a pretty badass voice and there isn't really a song I don't like by them. Check them out.

Tokyo Police Club: Another indie band. Very catchy and short songs.

The Strokes: Well...they're the Strokes, I'm sure most of you know them. They're old stuff was the best though I think.

Interpol: Another band with a great singer, and the bass riffs are quite awesome.

Arctic Monkeys: I find them pretty mainstream, but still a talented bunch.

Neutral Milk Hotel - A very unique band.
Favourite song - Holland 1945

Awesome!!!

Nirvana - They are one of my biggest influences for writing and they are the band that almost single handedly saved music from hair metal and such.

Favorite song is Breed

The Living End - They arnt too popular, but that is one of the reasons i like them. Chris Cheney is one of the best guitarists I have heard and he mixes Punk and Rockabilly just perfectly for my taste.

Favorite song is Tabloid magazine

Reverend Horton Heat - RHH is one of my fovorites because he like the Living End, Mixes Punk and Rockabilly perfectly. I even had the privilage of meeting the reverend after a show. He signed my guitar and we talked after the show with Him and Kim Nekroman. Cool Dudes.

Favorite song is Five-0 Ford

The Deep - I am a massive fan of psychedellic music and they were the first band the to use the word psychedellic in their cd title. For the record they recorded their cd in pitch black on acid.

Favorite song is Wake Up and Find Me

The Supersuckers - The only true form of Rock left in this world, they even go as far as to call themself the greatest rock band in the world.

Favorite song is Rock Your A$$

1. Streetlight Manifesto: The talent in this band goes unmatched by any other band I have EVER heard. They are backed by 4 of the best horn players of this generation, a bassist who plays lines so innovative that in some parts overshadows the guitar, a drummer who not only can play fast but has some of the best technique you will ever hear, a guitarist who can play very, VERY catchy tunes, and some of the best lyrics ive ever heard in a band.

2. The Aquabats: there isnt much to say here, these guys are just pure fun. I saw them in concert and they picked out a 4 year old kid from the audience, took him on stage, and threw him 5 feet in the air into the crowd. its on youtube if you search alex and the aquabats. Though theyre lyrics are in no way "inspirational" they are just a pure fun band.

3. Flogging Molly: i mean seriously, can you listen to this band and not dance? Their unique celtic style is unmatched in originality, though it is just my opinion that most of the other bands of the genre suck. And I also love the fact that not only do they have the fast irish tunes, but also the slower, acoustic songs.

4. Sublime: Now does anyone here not like sublime? Some of the best ska music out their. Not to mention their ability to mix in about a thousand genres into their music. Just an overall great band.

5. Dispatch: I hear people compare dispatch to jack johnson every once in a while. I think those people are crazy. Dispatch are the kings of jam bands, and all three of their studio albums are outstanding, not to mention their live albums. Not much bad to say about Dispatch.

I'm not sure what my old list said, but it's definitely time for a revision, nonetheless. My favorite bands/artists change with my mood, really. I mean, I'm pretty sure Tool and Red Hot Chili Peppers were on my last list, and I haven't listened to anything by either of them in over a month. Granted, I still love those bands, they just haven't been suiting my mood or personality as of late.

1. Elliott Smith - Easily the greatest singer/songwriter of the past 20 years, and for my money the greatest ever. All of his songs are amazing and emotionally moving to some extent. Even the material he didn't think was good enough to release is better than can be found in most bands'/artists' entire discographies. (Songs: No Name #1, Angeles, Thirteen, Southern Belle, Waltz #2 (XO), A Fond Farewell, Junk Bond Trader, LA, 2:45 AM, Coming Up Roses, Needle in the Hay, Between the Bars, Roman Candle, Baby Britain, and really everything he's ever done.)

2. The Cure - Huge fan. Only a rarities album and a live album short of owning all of their material. Really one of the most versatile bands I've ever heard. They have some of the saddest songs you'll ever hear, some of the happiest, and some of the most upbeat and dancey. However I'm feeling, I can usually find an appropriate Cure song for that moment. (Songs: Fire In Cairo, Killing An Arab, In Your House, All Cats Are Grey, Siamese Twins, The Hanging Garden, Close To Me, Shake Dog Shake, The Caterpillar, The Lovecats, Hot Hot Hot!!!, Why Can't I Be You?, All I Want, Just Like Heaven, Pictures of You, Lovesong, Lullaby, Fascination Street, Disintegration, Wendy Time, Doing the Unstuck, Club America, Strange Attractions, Round & Round & Round, Gone!, Where The Birds Always Sing, Alt.end, The Only One.)

3. Cherry Poppin' Daddies - And extremely versatile band that spans multiple genres. They can go from funk, to swing, to ska, to straight rock & roll,. Everything they've done is wonderful, and I've never heard another band that's just all around this much fun to listen to. Even the somewhat sad songs they do come across as a lot of fun. (Songs: Answering Machine, Midas in Reverse, Suicide Kings, Drunk Daddy, Cherry Poppin' Daddy Strut, The Search, Equus, "Hazel, South Dakota", Pink Elephant, Inertia Rhapsody, Kids on the Street, We'll Always Have Paris, Trapped Inside the Planet of the Roller-Skating Bees, Cosa Nostra, Irish Whiskey, Silver-Tongued Devil, Here Come The Snake, Luther Lane, Don Quixote, Zoot Suit Riot, No Mercy for Swine, Diamond Light Boogie, God is a Spider, Soul Cadillac, Bust Out/Arrancate, Blood Orange Sun, The Mongoose and the Snake, Julie Grave.)

4. Joy Division - Known as the ultimate sad-sack band, and I guess for good reason. Most of it is very depressing music. You've got a little bit of straight up punk here, such as the song "Warsaw", but most of it is just really melancholy. (Songs: Disorder, She's Lost Control, Love Will Tear Us Apart, Shadowplay, Decades, Heart and Soul, Atrocity Exhibition, Komakino, Transmission.)

5. Conor Oberst - Of Bright Eyes fame. I'm a big fan of his work with Bright Eyes, but I've been finding myself much more interested in his current solo work with the Mystic Valley Band. (Songs: Big Black Nothing, Roosevelt Room, Eagle on a Pole [version 2, since they have two very different songs with this name], NYC -- Gone, Gone, I Don't Want To Die (In the Hospital), Sausalito, Difference Is Time, Nikorette, Air Matress, Lenders in the Temple.)

5. Dispatch: I hear people compare dispatch to jack johnson every once in a while. I think those people are crazy. Dispatch are the kings of jam bands, and all three of their studio albums are outstanding, not to mention their live albums. Not much bad to say about Dispatch.

I just wish I heard people say anything about Dispatch. I've never met another person that's even heard of them.

Muse - Amazing guitar work and vocals from Matt, Chris and Dominic totally own their instruments. Every album is filled with amazing unique songs, I really couldn't choose a favorite album.
Favorite Song: "Glorious"

Taking Back Sunday - Pretty much my first favorite band, Amazing vocal work, Amazing lyrics (for the first album at least)
Favorite Song: "MakeDamnSure" or "Cute Without The 'E' (Cut From The Team)"

Paramore - I LOVE Hayley's voice, I love Zac's drumming, I love this whole band. They have such amazing catchy songs, Their new album is really great
Favorite Song: "Crushcrushcrush" or "Misery Buisness" or "Brick By Boring Brick" or "All I Wanted" haha, I really can't choose...

The Killers - Amazing guitar work, the band plays great together, I'm not really sure what else to say!
Favorite Song: "Mr. Brightside" or "Bones"

Pearl Jam - One of the first breakthrough grunge bands, Eddie Vedder has such a badass voice. Still a great band, 10(?) years later
Favorite Song: "Alive"

Current favorites in alphanumeric order:

Ryan Adams - Prolific songwriter with a really solid hit:miss ratio, given his quantity of output and considering that he writes music in a genre that is more or less easy listening and borderline terrible.

Animal Collective - I think these guys are one of the few truly innovative rock bands around without having to resort to derivative retro kitsch. Every album has just been a wonderful progression, except Danse Manatee. That one is unlistenable.

Archers of Loaf - Everything I love in a standard rock band. Gritty, melodic, sloppy.

edIT - I just don't even know what the fuck. How he creates those glitches and maintain that level of cohesiveness is beyond me. Maybe I'm just old and it's super easy and a computer does it for him or some shit, I don't know, but it sounds like the future.

Fantastic Plastic Machine - Like a mix between deep house and Cornelius, how can you not love it?

Ocellatus

I wouldn't call the guitars in The Killers "amazing", although I do enjoy what I've heard from them. I personally find Pearl Jam and Muse are boring.

I've re-prioritised some of the acts I listen to, so here they are if you want to criticise me.

1: Frank Zappa
Frank Zappa is still pretty much my favourite, and most admired artist, although a few of his releases fluctuate in quality. He was never a man shy to experiment, and sometimes those experiments don't turn out to well, but many of his releases and compositions are undeniably outstanding in terms of entertainment and brilliance. He managed to get some very talented guys working with him too, which probably helped.

2: Opeth
Opeth takes everything I love about death metal and merges it with top quality prog and folk. Catchy yet heavy riffs, beautiful acoustic guitars, vocals that can be angelic one minute and angelic the next, non-standard structures, and great writing. They've had a consistently steady standard of quality throughout their releases, and although the lineup has fluctuated, the skill of everybody involved has stayed as consistent as their albums.

3: Mr. Bungle
It's been difficult to get my hands on some of Mr. Bungle's works, but everything I've heard from them is either delightfully entertaining, intense, interesting or very clever. It's an Avant-Garde project that was fronted by Mike Patton of Faith No More and Tomahawk fame, that combines elements of Jazz, Pop, Electronic, Grindcore, Hard Rock, Motown and others into a delectable stew that I simply can't get enough of, even though I usually dislike the elements blended.

4: Atheist
Ultra-high quality death/thrash metal with subtle Latin structures and rhythms, mixed with time sigs not often found in thrash. All the instrumentation is truly badass in the highest. Atheist stands far apart from much of the death metal to come out of Tampa in the 80's, a lot of which aged quite poorly and sounded very similar.

5: Mastodon
Progressive sludge, stoner, and doom metal styles seem to be expanding in popularity of late, no doubt due in part to the success of Mastodon. Throughout the noticeable change in Mastodon's sound, it has remained a great experience. I fear I may have overexposed myself to Mastodon, with little else to digest, and so interest in them has slipped ever so slightly to make room for the non-metal I've been exploring.

Honourable mentions include Black Sabbath, King Crimson, Miles Davis, Carcass, Cynic, Death, Strapping Young Lad and Destroyer 666.

Manic Street Preachers
It's hard to try to explain why oh why are they my favourite of my favourite bands. I'll use some easy maths to get very regular explanation; lyrics + sound = pure love.

Pink Floyd
It's always cool to like Pink Floyd 'cause they're fucking classic. I like the feeling that they're music has, or maybe it's just me who gets that feeling 'cause my father used to listen Pink Floyd a lot when I was just a little kid. I always remember how I look up to the dirty purple-grey-brown autumn sky and it felt like I had the whole world to see. And ofcourse it's really wonderful to listen such a musical orgy.

The Smiths
They sound so nostalgic! And I always feel like I was just a little high when I listen them. Lyrics are great, well I couldn't listen a band which's lyrics I don't appreciate.

Joy Division
I first fell in love with the song "Love will tear us apart" when I heard it in Donnie Darko and thought "that's fucking amazing". So I had to find out what was that band and is their other stuff as great. Well, obviously, it was.

Nirvana
Nirvana is my musical first love and I was only 12 years old when I found this funny looking album (Nevermind) from secondhand store and oh poor neighbours, I repeated it couple weeks every time I was awake. Oh and they are/were so
sympathetic guys anyway.

At least the last one is not a british band!
