So it seems like a lot of people like band like Daft Punk, Nine Inch Nails, The Crystal Method, The Prodigy, and the likes, so I thought it'd be a good idea to start a thread on it.

You can debate Electronic/Techno/Industrial music here, recommend bands/DJs, or just talk about it.

So how bout we start with our favorite band in this category!

Mine:

The Crystal Method
Ever since I heard "Trip Like I Do" from the album Vegas, I've been in love with their music. My honorable mention goes to Daft Punk.

I'm quite partial to "Keep Hope Alive" off that album myself. That's pretty much the extent of my collection, along with Kraftwerk's "Autobahn."

I don't mind Aphex Twin material for the technical insanity but most of his music isn't really all that interesting.

It depends on the slbum and era of material really, ...I Care Because You Do is a good album if you can wrap your head around Ventolin, and can enjoy the urban-esque beats.

exetra

The only songs I really dig on Care are The Woxen Pith, Icct Hedral and Alberto Balsala, the rest are pretty average. Ventolin is pretty fun to play to friends.

My favourite RDJ stuff is on Selected Ambient Works 85-92 and drukqs (mainly the prepared piano/regular piano tracks). Hangable Auto Bulb (the CD version with two EPs on it) was suprisingly good too.

Industrial:

Throbbing Gristle

Did you ever hear my Throbbing Gristle remix? (http://www.sectionz.com/detail.asp?rType=mp3&SZID=27057)

I'm personally a fan of Daft Punk and Aphex Twin. Homework is recommended listening to any techno junkie out there, and I've heard some parts of the Analogue Bubblebaths, Didgeridoo and the Richard D. James Album. Also, would Kid A by Radiohead be considered electronica?

Definitely Ministry and Nine Inch Nails on the industrial side of things. «Thieves» [on Ministry's "The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste"] has got to be one of the best songs ever, and it's got samples from one of my fave movies ["Full Metal Jacket"], so it's a winner all around.

One of my fave bands of the industrial/electro/noise movement would have to be Atari Teenage Riot. Insane doesn't quite describe it. Digital hardcore, indeed.

Also, I really like some of Merzbow's... errr... "tunes".

Vicious Alliance, Dawn of Ashes, Assemblage 23, Das Ich, Nurzery [Rhymes], Amduscia, Straftanz, Grendel, Imperative Reaction, Hocico, Tactical Sekt, Suicide Commando, Pride and Fall, A7IE, FGFC820, God Module (Prior to Lets Go Dark), Virtual Embrace, NamNamBulu, Throbbing Gristle, Terrorfakt, Nitzer Ebb, Einstürzende Neubauten.

I do believe I'll end there for now.

I really recommend Vicious Alliance (www.myspace.com/viciousallianceebm) if you love powerful, pulsating beats and harsh vocals. Their music has a powerful message and plus, they're my friends.

This summer they're touring with Dawn Of Ashes and need some venues to play at.

Well, I caught The Bourne Supremacy on tv today and I remembered I had to get the theme to the series of movies (which I guess could be relevant to this thread). Anyway its called Extreme Ways by Moby, personally I think the beginning works really well with the endings to the Bourne movies.

Also, I am very happy I remembered to look at The Crystal Method. I had Filter's song (with Crystal Method) Trip Like I Do, but didn't know much else about the group. They are great!

Techno has two meanings; for Europeans they mean stuff with no vocals, really underground "hard" stuff. For Americans, when they say "techno", often they mean what in Europe is called "dance". And "dance" in Europe is a lot more mainstream and pop-oriented.

For "American" style techno (i.e. European "dance"), the best example I've found is this (itunes link): http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?albumTerm=Euro+Club+Hits+Vol +

Strangely it's called "Euro club hits" which makes things even more confusing. "European" style techno i.e. the stuff with no songs, I recommend going to www.beatport.com and checking out the stuff in the "techno" section.

I didn't want to start a new thread, so I just resurrected this one. My friend gave me alot of KMFDM, while I've always heard good things from them, and seen a few of their videos, I've yet to hear an album in it's entirety. I guess I'm intimidated because every friend I know that likes KMFDM is a HARDCORE KMFDM fan. So I wanna start off on the right foot, what KMFDM album should I listen to first? Are there noticeable differences in sound approach between albums?

Android
05-20-2008, 7:59 AM
KMFDM is one of my favorite bands, I've been into them for about 10 years now and I own most of their catalog. KMFDM was started in the 80s by Sascha Konietzko and En Esch. Because of the start during the 80s and their attempts to be on the cutting edge of electronics and recording, some of the early albums sound dated and cheasier due to the state of electronic musical equipment at the time, but they are still good in my opinion. Because they rely more on experimentation a lot of their albums have a different sound than their later stuff which is more industrial and guitar-based.

That said, my favorite albums by them are Angst, Xtort, Symbols, and Nihil. The guitar playing on those albums is absolutely phenomenal. They renamed themselves MDFMK for a bit because Sascha K didn't like Gunter (guitarist) hogging all the spotlight with his awesome playing. MDFMK is more dancey than industrial, and they soon renamed the band back to KMFDM due to fan pressure and waning album sales.

Tracks worth listening to by album:
------------Angst
Glory
Light
Lust
Sucks
------------Don't Blow Your Top
No Meat No Man
------------Nihil
Juke Joint Jezebel
Trust
Ultra
------------Symbols
Megalomaniac
Spit Sperm
Unfit
------------What do you know Deutschland?
Me I funk
Itchy Bitchy
------------Xtort
Power
Dogma - I love the talking part of this, "Lets stop praying for someone to save us, and start saving ourselves"
Inane
Son of a Gun
Wrath

On a similar note, have you heard much Skinny Puppy? They are an awesome industrial band from Canada who, like KMFDM, had a big hand in defining industrial music. One more band in a similar vein is Ensturzende Neu Bauten who used actual industrial instruments to create their sound. All of the bands I have mentioned I have seen live, and they put on amazing shows.

TheHighwaySong
05-20-2008, 12:09 PM
Ah definitely, I've listened to more Skinny Puppy, I love The Greater Wrong of the Right. My friend let me borrow their live DVD as well. I know Skinny Puppy is definitely amazing. I'll definitely look into the tracks you recommended, thanks.

Loads of stuff I listen too is listed in this thread.

When it come to electronic stuff I am usually more into trashy stuff like Boys Noize, Mr. Oizo and a hell of a lot more.

Someone mentioned Justice before, wich is great, but then referring to the song D.A.N.C.E. is kind of lame.
I mean it's an okay song and a matter of personal taste but they have way more to offer then this piece of radio compatible work of gayness.

I have to say Daft Punk is the most original techno I've heard in a long while, they have kickass concerts as well, I thoroughly enjoyed Too Long/Steam Machine during their neon light costume change encore...it was orgasmic. I know they aren't techno, but drum and bass to be exact, however I have to put in an honorable mention for Pendulum, they truly do have some amazing tunes.

Ed: Uh, thanks for moving it, whoever. I somehow didn't notice this thread.

From what I've seen in my short duration on this forum (2nd post, haha) it seems rock is pretty big around here.

Anyone listen to club-style music? Eg. house, mashups, remixes, electro, and shit. I'm not heavy into techno or that crap though.

Girl Talk - Play Your Part (Pt. 1)

Girl Talk is insane, he makes almost the best mashups. Get the album, it's free, and it's not as much an experience listening to a single song since the songs flow right into eachother. Kind of like music with ADD.

Usher - Love In This Club (Mstrkrft Remix)
zG5Go5qJrcU
I don't like Usher, but I personally love this remix.

Chromeo - Fancy Footwork
ms_C9AK8FRg
Chromeo is awesome, I'd recommending picking this one up. Fancy Footwork is a great album overall.

Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger

Everyone's mentioned all the really big famous ones. I suggest the band Combichrist. They're a little more industrial than most, especially when their songs get more vocal. I guess they're called like aggrotech or something. When they're actually singing I'd consider them some kind of weird mix between Nine Inch Nails (on the Broken album), Marilyn Manson, and Rammstein (for the essential angry screaming lyrics).
I suggest the songs:
What the fuck is wrong with you?
Fuck this shit
Get Your Body Beat
Tractor

And This Shit Will Fuck You Up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHl5EO77Rn4) containing the lyrics:
I am a bitch
How do you want me?
From behind?
Or on my knees?

I am a slut
Please hold me down
I'll be your noise
This shit will fuck you up

They also do a bunch of songs about movies or containing soundbites from movies like Blut Royale (Battle Royale), This is my Rifle (Full Metal Jacket), Are You Connected? (Suicide Club), and Master Control (Dazed and Confused).
Master Control contains the epic line by one of my favorite stoners. "Did you ever look at a dollar bill man, there some freaky stuff going on, on a dollar bill man. I mean and its green too."

The only thing that REALLY pisses me off about Electronic Music is all the fucking genres.

I mean honestly, as creative as some bands are, some manage to sound like every other artist while somehow manage to be in a different genre. I thought metal was ridiculous when it came to genre names, but christ, electronic is just as bad and maybe worse.

I would check some of these artists out, but there are just so many of them that I may not like :(

I'm going to second Exetra's Sonic Animation. They are awesome.

Other ones I'd recommend, simply because I've noticed we have very similar tastes in music and I don't like ALL techno would be:

The Presets (http://www.myspace.com/thepresets): A fairly big Aussie band. Start with My People, it's been their biggest song so far. They just have a very rocky/heavy style electro thing going on, and real vocals instead of just some kinda UtzUtz music samples. They have the kinda songs they can pull off playing live too without just seeming like they've thrown on a cd.

Groove Armada - Everyone probably already knows them. They're a full-size band. And again are awesome live. They seem to improvise in their songs a lot live so they sound different to the cd. I guess the most notable song would be I see you baby (shaking that ass) both for getting really popular and the video clip (haha).

Otherwise, I also absolutely LOVE Daft Punk. They are like the veterans of this kinda music and if you don't like them then you just don't like music. Kraftwerk are up there aswell in being awesome.

TC
Sub Focus
Aphrodite
Dillinja
Chase & Status
J Majik

Those are my favourite d&b artists out of your list Mad_CAt. TC and Chase & Status especially, in love with both of them at the moment. 'Raise The Roof' and 'Hurt You' have to be a couple of my favourite ever d&b tunes. 'Swamp Thing' by Sub Focus wouldn't be far off the title either.

Electronic music (d&b in particular) is probably the reason why I listen to much less metal these days. I really does open up your musical tastes as electronic music as a genre is so vast and broad that you are always going to find something you'll like and something new all the time. The only problem is that now I can never listen to my iPod on random as nothing flows anymore!

I think I'll be using this thread to look into Industrial music some more. I've always held a strong interest in the genre as I love metal bands with electronic elements in their music such as Rammstein and Static-X. I never got very far into delving into it properly though, getting only about as far as Frontline Assembly, anything to do with Rhys Fulber, Ministry, Pitchshifter and a couple of KMFDM songs.

If you enjoy Metal and DnB you should really check out Pendulum. I’d be surprised if you hadn’t heard of them, but if you haven’t check them out at www.pendulum.com. They play DnB live. Actually they are touring America right now. I’m personally going to see them play in SF. They are the main reason I picked up spinning records.

Sorry I cannot post video’s from work where I do most of my dickin’ around on the interwebs. Here's another classic DnB track No Diggity (http://www.chemical-records.co.uk/sc/servlet/sm?C=NODIG01&S=ALL)

Meh, Pendulum are alright. Their early work is far better than their newer stuff, although Propane Nightmares is a class tune. The rest of the album just didn't match up to it unfortunately. I still enjoy listening to them, but then again that's probably only because it's the only drum and bass that gets anywhere near mainstream play, other than the odd Shy FX song. Would like to see them live though, should be interesting at the very least. I've seen them play a DJ set before which was pretty cool, but I reckon a live set would be miles better.

The only annoying this is that people seem to think they like drum and bass when all they've heard is Pendulum who, let's face it, aren't the most representative artist of the genre. But if it gets people into drum and bass properly and into better artists then brilliant.

Agreed on that point! The bigger they get the further they seem to travel from their roots. I remember when I heard Vault (http://www.chemical-records.co.uk/sc/deck?track=31R019-a) I about lost it. But I will agree that IMO opinion In Silico has left me wanting.

Its a sad fact in DnB that artist's that 'make it' tend to lose touch with the people that helped get them there.

Well, this is an Eletronic music thread so... Anyone ever messed with a Theremin? :P

I hope you've all taken the opportunity to listen to them (and yes, esp. My People) if you haven't already.

Can anyone recommend me some Electronica with good male vocals, by the way? I'm really lost as to where I can find decent stuff 'cause last.fm really only has preset lists anyway and I've had little luck.

Check out The Faint, they have a similar sound to The Presets.

I'd also recommend checking out Air. The electronica is a little more chilled out, but it's phenomenal music.

If you want a little more rockish electonica with good male vocals check out Grandaddy. I would recommend checking out their last record Sumday as it is the most accessible one, but all of their other albums are great.

I'm actually a fair big fan of EDM.
I was meant to go see Tiesto but lost my ticket in the queue ... I know its so terrible.

Anyways, as for artists that I like:

BT, Hybrid, Way Out West, Pendulum, Ferry Corsten, Armin Van Buuren, Sasha, Chicane.

Theres stacks of great artists out there, you just need to know where to look.

I'm not a huge electronic fan. I was going to try to explain what kind of stuff I like, but can't think of a really good way to describe it. So, I'll just give a little list.

Daft Punk: Discovery is my favorite album by them. And easily one of my favorite albums ever. I like that it's a bit more lyrical than their others and not as repetitive. Ironically, it sounds more human than Human After All.

The Chemical Brothers: I have Dig Your Own Hole and Push the Button. Always wanted to get more of their older stuff. Push the Button was a major let down, but Dig Your Own Hole is classic.

Moby: Not such a fan anymore, but he still gets a listen sometimes.

Air: I usually prefer more upbeat stuff, but when I want something a little more relaxing Air is great.

Grandaddy: After hearing about them for awhile, I just recently picked up some stuff. I wish I had done it sooner.

The Fiery Furnaces: Not sure if they really count here, but they use a good amount of electronic sounds. But definitely more of a rock sound than a dancy techno one. Very odd group.

Dan Deacon: At least on Spiderman of the Rings. His only other one I've heard is a bit too "artsy." But Spiderman is great fun.

And now, a question. I was trying to think of a guy, not hugely popular. In fact, not very popular at all when I last heard of him, which was years ago. I can't remember his name and have deleted his music that I stole. All I remember is that he had done a whole album based around samples from the Star Wars movies. Anyone know who I'm talking about?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned (including myself) Meat Beat Manifesto. By far one of my favorite electronic artists of all time. You should all pick up Original Fire and Satyricon.
