Post bands from around your area in this thread.

I'll start off with one of my favorites that are actually coming out with a new album in a few days.

Cambiata (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=13467048) - All of the songs on their page are going to be on the new album. They are a favorite for anyone around here that follows the local music scene.
I can't really describe their genre all together, because overall their songs are pretty different from eachother. Definitely worth a listen if you like Indie, Rock, Alternative, or Hardcore. They will be putting some of their older songs back up after the weekend.

Explosions in the Sky (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pP09piedtAk): Awesome band, no vocals. If you ever have a chance, go to Austin City Limits when they're playing. (2 hours is close enough, right?)

Carousel Shy (http://www.myspace.com/carouselshy): Kind of an emo band, but they mix a ton of different music styles to make something that sounds pretty damn good. Lots of piano. (Only one album released, sadly)

Without A Face (http://www.myspace.com/withoutaface): Apparently these guys have a pretty big following. I'm not really into it, but it seems like everyone else is. More emo music.

I'm sure there's more, but I can't think of them right now.

My old boyfriends music is fucking fantastic. Hes working like clockwork trying to get exposure and gigs and its starting to pay off. Hes finally starting to get into light rotation in areas.

A few of his songs... (http://apps.facebook.com/reverbnation_fb/artist/sethdesade) I actually helped track the first two. :douchecock: They still need to be mixed though.

Saw them live and they were rad until an idiot skinhead punched a guy in the teeth. Good old school hardcore.

Mutiny (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=20007519)
I don't usually like folk punk but these guys changed my opinion.

Cut Sick (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=164618933)
Originally known as Misspent Youth this band is easily the best Crossover Thrash band in Melbourne.

That is all for now.

Sound Navigators/ Jonn Hawley (http://www.myspace.com/jhawley) is a techno dj around here, really great mixes.

James Amato (http://www.myspace.com/amatoinside) is another dj. And a really cool guy too.

AwesomeCarFunmaker (http://www.myspace.com/awesomecarfunmaker) call themselves Glam Rock. I dig their sound.

We The Living (http://www.myspace.com/wetheliving) for those of you who like indie.

The Gufs (http://www.myspace.com/thegufs) I love them lots. Have seen them like 12 times in concert. Also posted them in the underrated artist thread. It's also neat that they have been together as a band for 18 years.

Enjoy =)

They were the Checkers, but then they changed their style and changed their band name to The Ruining. Also, my cousin's in it, so that's another reason for me to like them.

Ligeia (http://www.myspace.com/ligeia) - A metalcore band from Massachusetts. There's quite a few people who like them.

The Acacia Strain (http://www.myspace.com/theacaciastrain) - Never really listened to them, but theres alot of buzz around them.

Give Em Hell (http://www.myspace.com/giveemhellhc) - I happen to be a pretty big fan of these guys. They played at the first show I went to, and I got punched in the face and concussed. It was a good time.

Where I live, hardcore music is very popular, so that's what many of the local bands are.

EDIT:

Other noteworthy mentions of popular local bands.

Boys Club (http://www.myspace.com/xboysclubx)
Emmure (http://www.myspace.com/emmure) (From CT, but close enough)

Ray LaMontagne (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=10492098) - One of the more successful singer/songwriters to come out of Maine. He's Folk singer, and he is great. I haven't seen him live, but I would love to.

For Victoria BC:

Theset (http://myspace.com/thesetband)- from Victoria BC, their coming out with their second album sometime this year and have dominated the local scene beyond any compare. Indie/Alt

Counting Heartbeats (http://myspace.com/countingheartbeats)- Party Pock, need I say more.

Kincaide (http://myspace.com/kincaide)- Metal/Post-hardcore, working on third album and tours Canada frequently.

Conversation (http://myspace.com/conversationband)- one of the two big up and comers that will soon be up their with the big 3, though not quite big enough to make it a Big 4 (or5) as of yet. They just finished their first BC tour and is getting ready to go as far as Manitoba in March for a western Canada tour. Post-hardcore/indie/powerpop

Quick, Said the Bird (http://myspace.com/quicksaidthebird) - for the grind fans, easily the best our town has to offer for the genre. This is the other up and coming bands that is moving from the just metal crowds to the second to last and headliners. finished touring with conversation on the BC tour and with a EP out, well worth the listen.

Forgot about this band. They disbanded 18 months ago but the music is still so fucking good. (http://www.myspace.com/lanouvelle) "Naive" is definitely their best song.

Fags who went to Taste of Chaos in 2005 may have seen these guys play. It was their very first gig too, in front of 16,000 people.

Here in Cape Breton, we have a tiny population and a massive music scene. Ever since there's been people living here, there's been a thriving local music circuit. Here are just a few of the recent ones;

SLOWCOASTER: (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=63366112&MyToken=b2f7e21f-6067-4516-b5aa-ea3d20ba8c7e) A trio of funk/reggae/rock masters who have the best vibe of any other band I've ever heard. One of my favorite bands, next to...

THE TOM FUN ORCHESTRA (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=75292809&MyToken=b2f7e21f-6067-4516-b5aa-ea3d20ba8c7e): Easily the best live show I've EVER seen (beating Alice Cooper, the Rolling Stones, Kanye West, Joel Plaskett, Metric, the Tragically Hip, etc.) A 9 piece orchestra comprising of 3 guitars (1 acoustic, 2 electric), fiddle, stand-up bass, accordion, banjo, trumpet and drums. The lead singer's voice rivals Tom Waits in many ways, and it is perfectly offset by the backup singer's beautiful tone.

CARMEN TOWNSEND AND THE SHAKEY DEALS: (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=47898800&MyToken=b2f7e21f-6067-4516-b5aa-ea3d20ba8c7e) Great three-piece rock band, comprising of the hardest rocking female vocalist ever. Her voice makes men stop cold, and women want to be her.

WINTERSLEEP (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=22506515&MyToken=b2f7e21f-6067-4516-b5aa-ea3d20ba8c7e): Indie-alt-rock gods, these boys know how to write songs and put on an awesome jam-show.

HULK OUT AND KILL (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=58790650&MyToken=b2f7e21f-6067-4516-b5aa-ea3d20ba8c7e): Instrumental rock at its finest. Nothing more needs to be said.

GET IT, GET DOWN! (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=121841265&MyToken=b2f7e21f-6067-4516-b5aa-ea3d20ba8c7e): Bringing punk-rock back to to its 90's roots, these guys are more fun to watch than a barrel of monkeys having knife fights.

Mr Anorexia

The Killing Moon (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=3289904): Rock/Emo band, they draw a pretty decent crowd to shows. One of the first bands that really got me to listen to bands around here.

Like BKS said, hardcore is really big around here. My husband is a promoter, and sets up shows for local bands. Hardcore is really the only type of music he can promote, since it's ridiculously popular.

A few of my favorite locals:

Something For Nothing (http://www.myspace.com/somethingfornothingband)
Song to check out: This Is Not An Option

Awesome band. Seeing them play live is insane. Even if it's a small show and there aren't a lot of people there, they still put the same amount of energy into performing as they would had it been a huge show. The songs up on their myspace are off their new album, which they just released not too long ago.

Near Defeat (http://www.myspace.com/neardefeat)
Song to check out: Out in the open

These guys are actually playing their last show ever on the 23rd. Such a shame, since they were quite good live, and really nice guys in person.

Ice Nine Kills (http://www.myspace.com/iceninekills)
Song to check out: Last Words

They categorize themselves as Emo/Screamo/Hardcore, and really are a great blend of the three. I haven't had the chance to see them live yet, but i've heard that they have great stage presence. Most of the local bands around here want to play with them.

Lannen Fall (http://www.myspace.com/lannenfall)
Song to check out: Dead Air

Not hardcore at all, but one of the biggest local bands around here. Really great jam out music.

Lovelysinger (http://www.myspace.com/lvlysngr)
Song to check out: Princess AKA Recognize

This is actually my friend Lydia. She has an amazing voice, and sings soul/jazz music. Last summer, there was a competition to sing with the Boston Pops on 4th of July, and although she didn't win, she made it to the top 3!

Represion- heavy metal band great sound

Mermelada Bunch- I like it tropical song mixed with alternativy rock
Manta- indie music, but as increible like it sounds, they are good o.O

And a lot of groups how play bañenato y gaitas

I'm too lazy to post links so if you're interested in a band you find them. Hey all these bands are from Vancouver BC!
Mother Mother: They are a great indie rock band. They sort of sound country but if you hate country don't worry! I do to and I love them.
Hot Hot Heat: You've probably heard of them. They are pretty great pop/rock band.

Some bands I like in city's sort of near mine.
Viva Voce: They're from Portland. I don't really know how to describe their sound but I like it.
I'm From Barcelona: From Seattle. I love them so much. The lyrics to their songs are simple and catchy. If I listen to one of their songs just once it's stuck in my head.
Carbon Dating Service: They deserve a mention because they're from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. There is nothing in Saskatchewan except farms! Yet somehow they create amazingly catchy songs you have to listen to a thousand times. I would categorize them as pop/electronic.

A Fragile Tomorrow: My friends'/neighbors' band. Their second album should be coming out soon. I have yet to hear their next album's quality since it's by some famous record producer guy, but I don't think their first album's songs sounded as good as they are live. Damn good stuff. If you're not really into slow music (I know I'm not), then they still have a bunch of good "jumpy" songs as well.

I really don't see how the people who go to the show would make the band worse. Sure, they're annoying, but the band still sucks. The lead singer is a 10-foot tall, creepy looking monster who appears like a regular guy on tv, but in person looks like the man who would rape you for a carrot.

My sister's ex was in a band called Tillcheck, and so I gave them a listen, they were alright apart from the horrible singer.
So they disbanded, got a new singer, and that's The Battle For Solace.
They're Metal/Screamo, as most bands in my area are, and they're awesome songwriters.

Them, and any other good local bands I can think of are signed with Fallen Sky Promotions (http://www.myspace.com/fallenskypromotions), a Promotions business 2 of my friends started up, and have been organizing some pretty awesome gigs for their bands.

Unfortunately, there aren't any local bands I'm aware of, which are any good. I'm not that into the local scene, but the ones I've heard, don't appeal to me at all. The only one which is good, I'm going to say is, My Morning Jacket, but they're not really local anymore, they have a major label deal.

Oh and my friend and his friend, go by The Ordinary Legends, they're hip-hop though. Other than that, I've got nothing.

Explosions in the Sky are wonderful. But not my local.

The Red Paintings (http://www.theredpaintings.com/)- Tour with the Dresden Dolls frequently, but are very different. Sounds like Nick Cave meets an Orchestra?

I can't think of any others yet, I'll post more when my brain decides to work.

the red paintings are really fucking good, actually. i went to see the dresden dolls, like you mention, they toured with them, and apparently they got a bunch of their shit stolen, so they had to barrow part of the drum kit, and their cello player got to sit out at the show... totally suck.

other awesome local shit-

from chicago-
lucky boys confusion. okay, so they're semi-famous to non-locals, and their last album was only so-so... but their older shit is pretty damn good. check our 'Fred Astaire' and 'power of the ganja'

dark spectrum. a friend recently joined this band, but he's the most incredible fucking guitar player i have ever witnessed, in my life. and i go to a lot of flippin shows. granted, most famous metal guitarists don't get bored and bring their acoustics to my house to play spanish guitar for me and mother...

viscosity is also good. don't know if they still perform- i assume so. their drummer is a friend of a friend, so i went with them to support them, but since i moved i haven't kept up on them.

from AZ, mostly flagstaff, but some phoenix/area bands (where i'm going to college)

Synergy, if you dig reggae... they're pretty bomb. the bassist just had to go sober this past week, which sucks, because he sold the best grass i've been able to find... super cool guys. sure they have a myspace somewhere... if its up there, check out 'shackles' ... if not, the rest of their music is groovy too. excellent for dancing.

FaYuca, from phoenix, but they play up in Flag sometimes. they were pretty bad ass. very Sublime-esque, stoner ska punk funk rock, but not *too* much like sublime. not a cover band. thank geebus. the singer adopts abused/retarded/handicapped puppies. we talked, he was rad. if he wasn't from phoenix, i'd totally put out/be a groupie.

the F Holes, psychobilly. if you're not familiar with the genre, its like ska, but instead of brass, they use stand-up bass. if you've heard the song 'stray cat strut they've covered it, and thats more what they sound like. like punk/rock/alt but with a cool 50's flava... woo.

brothers gow. Okay, okay, i think they're all jerks, whores, AND morons, but they're good musicians. and you can't go to one of their shows and not wanna dance your ass off. its a funky/hippy/reggae/jam band, with a lotta funk-rock flavor. they seem pretty rad at first, but the individual people of the band arent super cool. but... they're music is. go ahead and be conflicted, because i am.

from Boulder, CO.

actually, my roommates from boulder, and she showed me this band, called Three Oh Three ('3 oh! 3'? i dunno) and they're fuckin fantastic. i know they're getting some visibility outside the boulder area, slash, getting semi-famous these days. go them, what i've heard has been fuckin dope. more rap/rock/dance. sort of like a beastie boys for a new generation of angrier, funkier, wacky kids.

i know there are plenty others, but most of them have since died/split, or are a little too highschool for you to even be able to google them...

Corpus: (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=68889174) They're a local band around here that are pretty goddamned decent. Their Guitarist/Singer is my school captain and the drummer is also at my school. If you wish to listen to them might I suggest the songs Bernard Max and Daniel. They're pretty good for a two man band.

Tortured Artists: (http://www.myspace.com/torturedartists) They're alright, and I'm mates with every guy in the band so of course I'd list them. Lucas brings the ladies, Dicker brings all 'dis, Jimmi is awesome, Logan brings the shred (which we all know amounts to nothing) and Brod just is He also cannot sing...

DUDE! The Living End are great but they're not local, heaps of people know who they are! Seriously!

But anyway, the local band I love is The Getaway Plan. Hardcore screamo/punk

If you like screamo, listen to their ep "Hold Conversation", if you don't, listen to their album "Other Voices, Other Rooms"

I saw them live, and they were great (except they only played 2 songs cos the stage was dodgy and was going to collapse if they didn't get off. I was SO ANNOYED!)

Here in Cape Breton, we have a tiny population and a massive music scene. Ever since there's been people living here, there's been a thriving local music circuit. Here are just a few of the recent ones;

Slowcoaster played at my school 2-3 years ago. Easily the best thing to come out of Cape Breton since the Rankin Family:rock:
The Tom Fun Orchestra is insane as well. I haven't seen them live yet, but definitely will the first chance i get.
I love the Cape Breton Celtic stuff too.

Emiliana (http://www.myspace.com/emilianarock) is a really good hardcore band from the Minneapolis area. Thread necromancy!

Anyway.

I'm from Brisbane, Australia, and some bands who are on the scene right now (and are really good) are The John Steel Singers (http://www.myspace.com/thejohnsteelsingers), who are sort of Arcade Fire-esque indie pop. They supported Polyphonic Spree when they were here, to put it in some perspective. They just made a really cool video for their single from the forthcoming EP In Colour, called Rainbow Kraut (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=MpeqfsfH2b4).

Another is Hungry Kids of Hungary (http://www.myspace.com/hungrykidsofhungary), who are indie/pop with a bit of soul in there, and they have a really cool song floating around triple j (our alternative music station) called Set It Right that you should listen to.

No links, because the only band with a myspace (sex chocolate) doesn't even have any music up (that I know of)

Sex Chocolate - Their bassist knocked up my sister, that's the only whey I know them.

Crypt - I might start playing rythm guitar for them soon, they would be way better with a new singer. They only do covers though.

M.O.T.H. - Probably the best local band around, they're kind of death metal/thrash metal, I'm not really sure. They have a CD coming out in a month or two.

There's more, but these are the only ones that have members over 15 as bandmembers.

Rochesters music scene is nothing what it used to be but there is still a few bands that are making some good noise:

The Sirens And The Sailors (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=64479408)- Literally the only Rochester band making any movement towards getting big, they are signed by Sumerian records and are basically the local prodigy for hardcore music.

Seric (http://www.myspace.com/seric)- Seric is broken up but these guys had the next closest shot to being signed. Their recordings don't really do them justice as they basically raped any venue they played at. Never seen people beat the shit out of each other more than when these guys played.

Serenity Falls (http://www.myspace.com/serenityfalls)- My guitar teacher is in this band and basically sounds like a new Rush with a female singer.

I googled famous bands from Rochester, New York and nothing really came up but my guitar teacher said there was one.

Koala Taxi (http://www.myspace.com/koalataxi) was a pop-punk band literally 10 yards from my house (Muskego, WI, a suburb of Milwaukee). Their drummer was my neighbor, which was pretty kick-ass because I could hear them practice and hang out with them. They actually got somewhat popular in the area. They toured the Midwest, played Warped Tour in Chicago and Milwaukee, and played a few dates at Summerfest. They also put out a really nice EP. There's not a single bad song on it, and the recording quality is surprisingly decent. In my mind, their keyboard/synth parts are really what take them to the next level.

Something To Do (http://www.myspace.com/somethingtodo) is a ska band from Waukesha, WI (About 25 minutes from Muskego). I only recently found out about them, but I know they've played Summerfest and opened for such acts as The Toasters while they were in town. They also won some national contest held by Duck brand Duct Tape to write a song about duct tape. Best part is, it's actually a great song, rather than a gimmick. They have three albums out, but I've only heard their most recent one. The recording quality's not the best, but it's still really catchy stuff.

And, of course, my own ska band's still trying to get off the ground. More details on that if and when something happens.

Urma (http://www.last.fm/music/Urma) is one of my favourite bands and hails from my area. They sing a combination of jazz and rock.

Also, Cargo (http://www.last.fm/music/Cargo) (the Romanian band, not the Dutch one) used to be a good hard rock band.

Honourable mention, Travka (http://www.last.fm/music/Travka), despite not being quite from my area, I doubt anyone has ever heard of them.

Well, I've posted a couple 'local' bands in various other threads, and my friends' bands in my Rishloo thread... but there is still one incredible band I have not yet covered: Floater. Basically, if you think of a diverse mix of 'Tool' style art rock with a major Dead Can Dance influence, and the Northwest's signature grunge/alt rock sound... you'll probably have some sort of clue as to what these guys sound like.

They're from Eugene, although they moved to Portland awhile back. (I live in the middle of, and visit both often as they each have great music/art scenes.) And they play shows all up and down the West Coast here... lots of acoustic shows as of late.

Some of my favorite Floater songs I definitely encourage you to check out:

Cinema (http://www.last.fm/music/Floater/_/Cinema) - One of their oldest, heaviest, and best known songs. Listen to while high. It's about dropping acid. - "LICK THE OPEN WOUND! LICK IT! LICK IT!!!" -

Exiled (http://www.last.fm/music/Floater/_/Exiled) - Easily one of my favorite songs of theirs. If the guitar part in the beginning doesn't hook you for the whole song... well... sucks to be you.

American Theatric (http://www.last.fm/music/Floater/_/American+Theatric) - Another great song. - "So you rise from the blood, catching yourself in the mirror... Well did you get it on film? -

Watched Over By Crows (http://www.last.fm/music/Floater/_/Watched+over+by+crows) - Badass song. I'm digging it a lot lately. From the album "Burning Sosobra."

- I tell you truth is not something my friend,
You'll find written on the inside of your wrists,
And absolute truth is not something my friend,
That existence has. -

Well, i live in a totally different country, so, the "local band" i'm going to post now is actually not that of a "local" but...

The band is called DIVIDIDOS, ("separated" in english), and they are known as "La Aplanadora del rock" (the rock paving roller) for the feeling you get in the live perfomances, they are really HARSH, and you can almost feel the waves from the sound hitting your face. They are a power trio, from here, Argentina. And i dunno, they don't have a myspace but i managed to find some videos.

And here, a cover they always play of voodo child, what is great about it, is that Mollo (the guy who plays the guitar) either plays the beggining with a shoe, his teeth, or in this video, with a carrot. (You can see him throwing it at 0:53)

STAND BEHIND THE GIANT: I highly recommend these guys to fans of Bring Me The Horizon, their older stuff, though. They're a deathcore quintet of high school kids. They have proven that you don't have to be "old" to produce great music. Their dedication reigns true. I am good friends with them and they know how to put on a good show. Baptized in Blood (http://www.myspace.com/baptizedinblood) are a sick band that are from London, ON. Each time I've seen them they have put on amazing sets. Good Gothenburg influence. They say "For Fans of: Metallica, Children of Bodom, and In Flames" on their myspace, which to me sums it up pretty good.

I Am Committing A Sin (http://www.myspace.com/iamcommittingasin) is a good rock-ish band. One of their main influences is The Mars Volta. Well devoloped lyrics, and I can't wait to hear their new material. Recently toured with Silverstein and A Day To Remember.

Endast (http://www.myspace.com/endast) are amazing. Big James (vocalist) has so much power, insane to hear him live. Pepe also is a great guitarist and throws in some cool clean vocals on a few tracks, ex. Self Destruct. Can't wait to see these guys again on tour.

Yeah. They think they are all big and bad because 3 of them are moderately attractive, and were popular in Michigan.

The reality is that our local guy who runs shows doesn't even like to book them, but he has to fill a slot now and then.
