View Full Version : Essential Xbox 360 games?

So, I will most likely be getting a 360 over the course of the next month or so. Which games should I definately get (bear in mind that I have the new pro evo, and Guitar Hero III for the PS2)?

Oh and by the way, I really don't like FPS so don't suggest them for me please.

Cristo

Trust me, get Pro Evo/FIFA for the 360 anyway they're completely different. You cannot compare them at all.

I know that FIFA 07 was VERY, VERY different on both consoles.

I should have said that money is somewhat a constraint too. If I do get a 360, I'll only have about £120 to spend on games initially. So I would rather get new games first.

New games which cost the most, therefore limiting your selection, which you've already limited by saying you don't like FPS on a system that's biggest selling point is thier FPS.

Assassin's Creed is really good with no replay value though.

I don't know what an FPS is, but I'd say you can't beat Halo 3, especially for online play. Also, I have lots of fun with Viva Pinata.

Fps is first person shooter. Like Halo.

Buy Oblivion. You'll get alot of hours out of it.

Or buy COD4.

Fraudulence_Raft

Gears of War is a must get, as well as Rock Band. Viva Pinata is kind of kiddy, but it does satisfy your Sims-esque needs. Dead Rising is an awesome third-person adventure, especially if you really like zombie parodies. Mass Effect is a good RPG, and although I'm not getting the full gameplay experience out of it, Elder Scrolls Oblivion is a crazy game.

There' definatley more games that I'm forgetting to mention, but those are the "essential" Xbox 360 games.

Ha, COD4 and Gears of War. I hope they're not FPS games...

(:

Assassins' Creed looks like a really fun game, but so far, a lot of 360's hype is based off it's FPS games. Fraud has a good list up there too.

If you don't already have it for computer, get it for the 360. It's a MUST have.

One of the best RPGs around, there is so much shit you can do in this game, it's insane. Trust me, you will NOT regret getting this game

If you like sandbox games, Saint's Row was a pretty good game.

Gears of War, Halo 3, Bioshock, and Call of Duty 4 are all you'll ever need. Until new games come out, that is.

Gears of War satisfies your need to blow shit up and see people explode. Halo satisfies your need to kill aliens and jump ten feet in the air while firing a rocket launcher. Bioshock is basically the best FPS without multi-player and has an amazing story line. Call of Duty 4 clearly quenches one's thirst for realistic combat, is a must have for war-junkies.

Agreed, even if they are FPS. I really can't think of any other games, aside from .skate maybe, just because of its innovation.

In all honesty, then you shouldn't get a 360.
There's is EA Sports Games, Car Racing Games, and Shooting Games.

Don't get me wrong I love my CoD4, Halo, and Gears. But those are all shooting(Gears is third-person though)

But other than that all that comes to mind is Rock Band, Viva Pinata(), Mass Effect, and AssAssins Creed.

I just ignored the fact that he doesn't like FPS. It's the staple of any console. Sure, there are some RPG games out there and Halo Wars is coming out, but (in my opinion) those types of games are much better on a computer. FPS FPS FPS. If you like RTS, then get a good computer. Because they're just irritating on a console most of the time.

peteaboda1
02-05-2008, 8:11 PM
Forza Motorsport 2 will come with the console so I don't need to suggest that. Wow, thinking about it there really aren't too many games that aren't shooters to suggest.

Demoir
02-06-2008, 10:45 AM
Thanks for suggesting Oblivion, I love huge RPGs like that. And I can't get Rock Band, I'm in the UK.

Also, I get I will get 1 or 2 FPS, mainly because a lot of people said they are the main staple and second of all I actually had a lot of fun with GoW when I played it. I'm not getting Halo though because I seriously suck at it and online isn't all that fair (first person who gets seen = person who dies).

Oh yeah, and I like the idea of getting Mass Effect, I've heard a lot of good about it.

Kane and Lynch is the bomb. It's an awesome 3rd person shooter.

Since you said you would get an FPS I would say COD4, but seeing as how you said you aren't good at halo, you may not want to get it (it requires a lot more skill than halo). If you aren't necessarily interested in multiplayer you can always go with Bioshock which has a great story though it is somewhat short.

edit: I would get Mass Effect before an FPS seeing as how you like RPGs.

Sarge51

Mass Effect seems more Story focused than 3rd Person Shooter. Nice game though. I'd recommend that.

Get Test Drive Unlimited. Still the best driving game out for the 360, just purly for the amount of fun you can have driving around with some mates.

If you were only going to get one fps I'd get the orange box. For value, variation and portal

plus I second skate, and since you like rpgs fable for the xbox is still good

Yeah, i agree with basically everyone else in this thread in saying "If you don't like FPS games then why the hell did you get a 360?".

That said, Oblivion, Assassin's Creed are both good choices. Oblivion will keep you entertained for weeks. Assassin's Creed is fucking amazing, but with almost no replay value.

BilkEmDanno

It's been said a million times. Here are some really good games-

Buy: (And some "maybe rents")
-Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion- greatest RPG ever.Shows off the new graphics of your shiny 360. Get the Game Of the Year edition so you also get yourself a $30 expansion pack and a $10 mod along with the game without having to pay extra. You will probably have to pay $40 plus. Lots of replay value and just "fuck around and do nothing" value.
-Godfather- If you're into GTA-style games, this is good. It has some SERIOUS flaws, but if you over look them for just a bit you got a really good game. And, it only costs $30 for a brand new copy! If you're short on dough, rent it for a week and then rent for one more week to finish it off if you haven't already. Some replay value.
-Saint's Row- Also if you're into GTA-style games. It's better then Godfather in many ways, worse in a few. Expect to pay $50+ for a copy, though. You could also rent this one for a week and finish it, and rent it for two to 100% it. Some replay value.
-Mass Effect- a godly RPG with very minor flaws. $50+ A good amount of replay value.
-Call of Duty 4- If you are planning on getting XBox Live, this is a must-buy. It has a really fun single player but a GODLY multiplayer. $60, since it is fairly new. You will have a lot of fun.
-Gears of War- If you are planning on getting XBox Live, get this. That's it. If you will not have XBox Live, don't even bother. Just rent it at most. Its a fun game in single player, but it only has FIVE WHOPPING MISSIONS. The multiplayer or nothing.
-Dead Rising- This is an iffy one. If you're into walking around and killing shit randomly, this is the game for you. Really fun, just sometimes aggravating and it will take you a couple of play throughs before you get anywhere close to beating the game, so don't even try your first time through. Seeing as this is a fairly old game, you should be able to pick it up cheap. Weigh whether or not it is worth it to buy or rent.

Rent:
-Crackdown- Great game, but it goes by waaaay to fast. One week should get you some good gaming out of it. Very little replay value.
-Assassin's Creed- Another amazing game, but once you beat it, there is very little point to beat it again.

Accessories:
-XBox Live: It pwns. I need to get it myself.
-Play N' Charge for the 360 Controller: It's helpful in the "Ah, I want to play but I'm out of battery power, out of batteries, and out of hamsters to run on a wheel while I play." That, and you can connect to the computer with it.
-A Dwight Bobblehead, from the office: Because it rocks.

Hope I helped.

Really? That's the first positive review I've heard of it.

I don't read reviews anymore, I find someone else's opinion rarely matches my own. It's brings no fancy new features to the gaming realm but it's a solid 3rd person shooter game that doesn't get strung up on "Bullet time" and other such nonsense.
Also the Story and characters are solid, very, very well put together. Online play is very good also.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. It looks like I won't be getting a 360 until about June/July though (I was planning on paying for it now, but my parents said they'd pay for it after my GCSEs).

The BF and I just bought a 360, and we are looking for some good multiplayer games for it. Any ideas? I would like Dead or alive 4 :)

Other than that, what good multiplayer games on the 360 are there?

Gudizere
02-09-2008, 8:23 AM
Almost any games have Multiplayer these days, but some I'd recommend :

Call of Duty 4
Because its the best Live game of the moment.

Halo 3
For when you feel the need to shotgun 13 year old kids in the face.

Test Drive Unlimited
Just get some friends together and cruise into the sunset.

Their the best of the bunch.

Here's my list:

Gears of War

Assassin's Creed

Mass Effect

Saints Row

Kane and Lynch

You won't go wrong with any of them to be honest, excellent games.

BilkEmDanno
02-09-2008, 3:12 PM
If you're looking specifically for multiplayer games-

CoD 4, of course.
Gears of War.
Halo 3.
Kane and Lynch. (though otherwise it isn't so fun)

I personally would not recommend Dead or Alive 4, it's... it's... trashy, to say the least.

MistyTehMoose

By Trashy, I mean it's utterly ridiculous. The only point of the game is to appease prepubescent adolescents who can't even dream of getting a girlfriend so they just watch pixels.

Elder Scrolls: Oblivion: So effin' awesome. I mean, seriously, when you can completely abandon the main quest line and do just about whatever you want [including join the Fighter's, Mage's, Thieve's guilds, and the Dark Brotherhood (essentially, the Assassin's guild)], how could you possibly say no??

Assassin's Creed: If you're looking for an awesome game with next to no replay value, then here it is. It's got a wicked story behind it that requires a bit of real attention to grasp (in most cases, anyways), and it just looks great.

Mass Effect: Probably close in length only to the Elder Scrolls games, the game is just as intended, massive. Just about everything you do in the game, the responses you choose, the places you decide to travel to, even the sex of your character, all have some sort of impact on the story as you progress through the game. Woohoooo!

Two Worlds: Don't pick this up. Nothing but poor reviews on the choppy graphics and linear gameplay.

Enchanted Arms: Don't get this either. Again, poorly reviewed as boring and not worth your time.

Eternal Sonata: Beautiful! -sniff- Both in audio and visuals, plus an engaging story for yah.

Culdcept Saga: It's not so much of a RPG as it is like a card game and a board game meshed together. Tons of fun!! Over 500 cards in the game, all individually hand-illustated images, kinda of plays like Magic: The Gathering, but cooler, hahah. It's also a lot easier to get into because it JUST came out. Also, you can battle up to 3 other players on Live and see who has the better luck and the best deck.

Beautiful Katamari: No, this isn't an RPG either, but it's tons of silly, Japanese fun. As you progress through the game, you can even begin to roll up stars and galaxies, hahah. Also, has multi-player capabilities paired with stunning visuals that the previous Katamari games did not!

Ehh.. I think that's it for now.. Whenever I go back to work today, I'll probably remember some more awesome 360 titles.

If you read my post, I already recommended that. By reiterating it, you are just going off-topic like we were.

In any case, to get back on topic-

There are also Arcade games for the XBox360 that kick ass, such as Hexic- one of the most addicting puzzle games I've played in a long time.

BilkEmDanno
02-11-2008, 2:29 AM
I think Hexic comes with most 360s, either way, it is a great game and I love it to death. No where near as much as Oblivion or Mass Effect, but it's better then, like... like... Dead or Alive 4.

Oh damn.

Sarge51
02-11-2008, 2:37 AM
Oh Snap!!

I believe I am thinking of Hexic. My Xbox didn't come with Hexic. But it was still chopped full of craptastic demos and trailers. Course, my 360 was an Elite came from a warehouse store, and came with 3 Months of Xbox Live, two wireless controllers, plug and play kit, and no game. I guess that's why I see a ton of people playing Hexic. At least they made a good game free. Not like Undertow.

BilkEmDanno
02-11-2008, 2:43 AM
Hexic is the game where you have a bunch of Hexagons that you twirl around. You can't move them, just twirl them. And you have to match them by color n' shiz. It's a fairly easy game, but getting the achievements is/was painful. Grand Pearl Poobah requires, like, Jesus skill.

MistyTehMoose
02-11-2008, 7:48 AM
I think it was mentioned earlier, but Eternal Sonata is actually alot of fun (albeit it is still fucking expensive :()

I got it when I bought mah Xbox, and it definitely awakens my love for RPGs again. It also brings a new change to traditional turn-based fighting which I liked.

Gudizere
02-11-2008, 11:22 AM
Im confused as to why Hexic was promoted as a good game. I'm sure it can be fun, if you've got no games and no live. And i'm sure being blind would help alot.

And as for 'Scene It', from what i've heard, it is a worthwile party game. It's supposed to be great with lots of replayablitiy, the only bad remark i've heard is that there is a lack of question's on the modern film and tv.

Hmm.. Okay..

Anyways, yeah. Speaking of Live, there are tons of games and crap available if you've got it.
Also, the only 360 that comes with games now is the arcade system. It's got Pacman, Luxor, Uno, and a couple others downloadables from Live, because unless you purchase a hard drive separately, you can't access Live from the start.

Ooh, despite EA closing down, Skate is awesome. Much better than the Tony Hawk games, imo. Instead of hitting X, Y, or whichever button it is to kickflip or ollie, you control the skater's foot mechanics through the analog sticks. Lots of fun!

Lost Odyssey looks like it'll be another huge hit. (I know it's releasing today in the States, but I can't say for sure when in the UK.) Turn-based RPG where you play through the characters 1,000 years of life, along with some other interesting elements. Some very big names behind this game! http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg/lostodyssey/index.html?tag=result;title;0

Lost Odyssey is pretty bad ass from what I've played of it so far, and I'm on the 3rd disc. (There's 4)

The short stories (dreams of 1000 years) are written quite amazingly induce a lot of philosophical thought to the reader.

I hear it's all quite built up like a brand new game, but at the end of the day you still might as well be choosing attack, magic, item or run. I saw this boss fight that was just basically the same MEGAHD video of a guy attacking a big robot thing over and over again =(

What? Are you serious? Halo is amazing. Gears is okay, but the online sucks. Everyone just used shotgun. And CoD4 is probably better, but Halo is still spectacular, with a better story line too.

I'd have to suggest Halo 3 if you didn't say that you suck at it but since you did then save your money. CoD 4 would be my next suggestion but like somebody else said, if you suck at H3, you'll suck at CoD4. I've heard that Oblivion was great and what I've played of Assassin's Creed was pretty spiffy. However I think the game I would recommend most is Orange Box because Portal is the most amazing puzzle game ever (even with the low replay value).

Hawke
03-08-2008, 6:44 PM
Major ones are Rock Band, Gears of War,Call of Duty 4, and the Orange Box.

Get Halo and Halo 3, only because Halo has a great single player and Halo 3 has a great Multiplayer. I would have suggested Halo 2 but Halo already has it beat in Single Player and Halo 3 already has it beat in Multiplayer.

A personal favorite is Dead Rising, but only because I enjoy zombie games. Oblivion is good too, but it is not for everyone.

Other people suggested Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed; but I personally did not enjoy Assassin's Creed as much as everyone else and while I do recommend Mass Effect, you really have to be in the RPG mood to play that game, other wise just play the much better TPS, Gears of War.

Gaz > Master Chief.

Anyway, as everyone else has said, you need to get the FPSs for the 360. They are "the staple of the system". Gears, COD4, Oblivion are all pretty much must haves. I'd try Mass effect and Dead Rising as well. Oh, and don't waste your money on Assassins Creed, just rent it.

I wouldn't get Halo3. I am a Halo fan, but I just don't see the fun in it anymore. If you're going to get it, get it for the story. The MP seems too boring. Sure, Forge is fun and all, but there's limits. I myself am going back to Halo CE on the computer and Halo Custom Edition.

Also, I am working on reading the books.

If you want a truly essential 360 game, it has to be Dead Rising. It was my most anticipated game for the 360 when I first heard about it. I thought to myself, "This is the first game I'm going to get if I ever get a 360.". And to say the least, I was very impressed. Though, my first playthrough was kind of numb, because all I used through the whole game was Katanas and Hunting Knives, and I only got Ending C (Or B?...), either way, I didn't unlock the other two modes, so yesterday I started a new game and so far I am about 10 levels further than I was on my first game. Mostly due to saving many survivors, they are great PP rewards, especially the further into the game you go.

I would pick Dead Rising over Halo 3 anyday.

Now onto a FPS. I would say Frontlines: Fuel of War, due to the huge amount of carnage going on at once, I feel like I am in a war with explosions everywhere. 16 vs 16 Matches are the bomb. OR the infamous Call of Duty 4, just because it's probably right below Halo 3 in FPSers.

I'm gonna agree mainly with Assassin's Creed, Rock Band, Halo, and The Orange Box.

However, whats with the lack of XBLA games mentioned?

N+, Hexic, Worms, Boom Boom Rocket, Bankshot Billiards 2, SO many other games that I'm sure I haven't played yet, and they cost a shitload less than a brand new game. Most are 800 MSP, which translates to roughly 10 bucks. Namely N+ and Worms, INSANE amounts of replay value and multiplayer fun.

I sucked up and bought Pacman Championship Edition. Ah. Good revamped Pacman.

N+ is great, except no one is ever online. and of course Worms is an essential!!

in my opinion, mass effect is nothing but too much dialog.

assassins creed is just way too repeditive and boring.

my brother has loads of fun with forza... but i dont really like it.

gears of war is great but they over did the graphics. kinda ruins it for me.

CoD4 is an amazing game, and i had loads of fun with it

but obviously, you cant go wrong with halo 3. the xbox was practically made for halo 3. the best fps in my opinion. and the reason the first person to be seen dies is because your being seen. duh.

also, btw, i have rock band. its a great party favorite. and its fun when the internet connection is on the fritz. if your playing the drums, grab a redbull, and get to it. :]

I agree with Hexic, totally. I'm addicted to the damn game.

Also, if you're into role playing games, Fable 2. My boyfriend had got it and spends hours on end playing it and it looks really interesting, I just didn't enjoy it.

Also, I didn't like Rock Band, much preferred Guitar Hero: World Tour.

As for driving games, I'd recommend Burnout Paradise over Test Drive Unlimited. You get money in the game for crashing the car! It's a lot of fun to play.

Fuck that, both too old. Wait 2 months and buy FUEL instead.

And LIVE Arcade is still brilliant, I know its just a gimmick to make me give Microsoft money but still...

Hey I forgot all about this thread.

I'm not buying Halo 3 since my brother bought Halo 1 and it just isn't that good to be honest. I've got COD4 which I actually enjoyed playing so I doubt I'll get any more FPSs any time soon.

I'm basically hooked on Guitar Hero again at the moment so I basically have no need for any other games (although I've got Oblivion, which is brilliant).

I like playing games very much. I like burning xbox 360 games (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6vD6ueWNuo) but I do not know how to do downloading xbox 360 games (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6vD6ueWNuo). Sometimes it is difficult.

Bioshock, The Orange Box (TF2 is much better than COD4. Actually, if you have a computer that's decent enough to play games, disregard this suggestion and get it for the PC) Fable 2, Crackdown, DMC4
