Try 'The Tripod Trilogy', it was pretty good when i was eleven, and It was tough read then, and i'm a mother fucking genius, so it shouldbe about right.

I don`t qiute remember if there were many aliens, but Isaac Asimov fiction series "Foundation" is pretty OK
