I love the way this trilogy addresses magic... both with how it works, and how it relates to common every day things that exist in every society (like how angsty teens get interested in it but end up screwing everything up because they don't understand wtf they are doing).
It's an amazing set of books that seriously leave you wanting more after the third one. The way the world is constructed is so different than most fantasy worlds, and makes a lot more sense than others. It focuses on several different topics that almost everyone has dealt with, all the while weaving a rich fantasy to drive the story line. Alliances are formed and left behind, the inner struggle between characters on all sides forces you to re-evaluate your ideas of what a hero and a villain really are.
This set falls back to the hardcore struggle between the "good" of a fundamentalist church (not necessarily any specific modern religion... but hardcore and indoctrinated nonetheless) and the "evil" of a night predator, all the while following a twisting pattern human and inhuman emotions that refuse to allow a easy journey along the paths chosen by each character, while still being true to themselves.
