View Full Version : Favorite Album
What is everyones favorite album that they love to listen to? Sure, alot of people these days download music and never actually buy the albums, but this is more about which album has your favorite/best music on it; whether its illegal or not.
For me, I love almost all of the Red Hot Chili Pepper's (I'm looking at you Stadium Arcadium :argh:), but my favorite would have to be Blood Sugar Sex Magik. It's a dual-edged sword, with funk on one side and melody on the other.
Some honorable mentions would be We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank by Modest Mouse, Broken Boy Soldiers by The Raconteurs, Wolfmother by Wolfmother, or Midnite Vultures by Beck.
You could also try to explain why or how the album won you over.
Probably Funeral by Arcade Fire.. but I also adore For Screening Purposes Only by Test Icicles and Sound of Silver by LCD Soundsystem.
Songs for Silverman By Ben Folds
Busted Stuff By DMB
Let it Be by The Beatles
Dark Side of the Moon By Pink Floyd
Dookie By Greenday
Lots and Lots to list...

I really started liking Devin Townsend's Accelerated Evolution. I don't know, I got this album and ever since then I have just loved it more than anything. The song on the album just gets me in a good mood every time I listen to it.

My favourite album right now is probably Squarepusher's Ultravisitor CD. A perfect balance of jazz bass trickery, gut wrenching drill and bass and soothing guitar/epiano lullabies.
I find myself coming back to Awake by Dream Theater, Adam and Eve by The Flower Kings and The Moon Is Falling by Joel Hoekstra a lot so I suppose they deserve a mention.
My favorites are:
Illmatic by Nas- The greatest rap album ever made. It's pretty short with only 8 songs but on every every song Nas demonstrates amazing lyrical wordplay that no one has been able to do on one single album as well as he does here.
Sin-A-Matic by Louis Logic- My other favorite album is also hip hop but and this is an awesome show of variety by Louis Logic in lyricism and style of beats. My favorite underground album.

Kezia by Protest the Hero. Screamo/Punk band that features ever changing and complex time signatures and rhythms. Before Kezia they were just another Screamo/Punk band, but with Kezia, they tested themselves, writing riffs they struggled to play, in timings that the drummer struggled to keep in time, and in a key the singer found difficult. They challenged themselves, and improved greatly because of it.
Since I Left You by The Avalanches. Hard to describe what style The Avalanches are, but I love them, and this is their only current release. I'll often just have this on repeat, ignoring all the rest of the music on my mp3 player.
And last, but certainly not least, Killing With a Smile by Parkway Drive. Almost every song on this album is a favourite of mine. Pure chug, with balls. Every song on this album demands headbanging. Their verse riffs are more ballsy than most bands' breakdowns are, and when it gets to the breakdown, it blows everything else out of the water.

I was hooked on that album when I first got it...but after 6 years or whatever it's been...I've kind of grown tired of it. It was cool to see someone mention it, though.
Probably the albums I can basically always get into would be:
OK Computer by Radiohead. Sometimes if it comes on, I think I'm not in the mood...but before the end of the first song I'm into it, and by the end of the last song I wish it weren't over
Crooked Rain Crooked Rain by Pavement. I just love it. don't have a ton to say about it except that I can always get into it.
Discovery by Daft Punk. This may actually be my favorite album ever. Kind of like OK Computer, I sometimes think I'm not in the mood, but it sucks me in. And, while OK Computer is kind of depressing, this is pretty upbeat, has some sexy songs, and overall just flows really well.

I only got introduced to them late last year, by Far, so it's still got it's charm for me. Any news on if/when they're bringing out something new?

I've never actually listened to a Radiohead song, but I've heard good things about them, and I hear they're similar to Muse, whom I rather enjoy, so I'm currently "acquiring" some Radiohead songs. Any particular songs you'd recommend?

Karma Police off OK Computer is awesome as well. Bands like Panic! At The Disco are trying to be more like Radiohead.
Anyway, mine would have to be the The Bends, featuring Yorke's kickass falsetto and Jonny Greenwood's restrained strumming and electric flare-gun solos. Fake Plastic Trees and Street Spirit are my favourite songs off the album.

For me it's probably Vheissu by Thrice. At the time it contained the bands lightest material ( Untill ast years Alchemy Index ) which was quite refreshing and made me look at the band as a whole in a different way. It has some really beautiful songs, and also some great hard rock songs. Masterpiece is the only word fit to describe it.

Wish You Where Here by Pink Floyd is my number 1. Unlike Dark Side it's abit more rockish and still very prog. Although Dark Side is great too.
Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull would also be able to be one of my favorites. Absolute gorgeous lyrics as complex as a dog with a hat.
Foxtrot by Genesis, this album has Supper's Ready. That's cool.
Again, no way I'm just sticking to one!
OK Computer - Radiohead (1997)
perfect.
Aenima - Tool (1996)
complex, catchy, challenging and emotional? Hot damn, I'l take four!
Mirrored - Battles (2007)
complex, catchy. challenging and exhilarating? Hot damn, I'll take four of these too!
Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven - Godspeed You! Black Emperor (2000)
Despite the name, this is not some balls-out black metal thing, quite the contrary. It's stunning instrumental music with a classic, epic feel.
Angel Dust - Faith No More (1992)
This is where all the nu-metal bands (Korn, deftones, Limp Bizkit et al.) started paying attention. Songs like Everything's Ruined and Be Aggressive have to be heard to be believed!
Jesu - Jesu (2005)
drone meets doom meets shoegazer meets melodic rock meets perfection = jesu!
Surfer Rosa and Doolittle - The Pixies (1988 and 1989)
Visceral.
Hats of!

The End Of Heartache - Killswitch Engage
Thrill Seeker - August Burns Red
The Poison - Bullet for my Valentine
Shadows Are Security - As I Lay Dying
These are currently the albums that I listen to most, so I'd definitely call them my favorites. Well rounded and well put together albums.
Although there's a few other albums I couldn't live without.
Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
Rubberneck - Toadies

Oh, Rubberneck is great. "Tyler" is the creepiest song ever. It's a shame the Toadies get overlooked so much. I was going to see them at a festival a few years back, but then they broke and canceled. So instead I had to see a bunch of crap I didn't really care for like Linkin Park, Powerman 5000, some other bands I know, but hate and don't care to remember the names of, as well as Rammstein and Live. But, I digress.
Pelican Man, I don't know if The Avalanches still exist. I haven't heard anything about them since I bought their CD back in 2000. If they haven't released anything in 8 years...I wouldn't count on anything new.

Yeah, they were a solid band. They had some really great songs, Backslider, Possum Kingdom, Tyler, I Come from the Water. They really did get overlooked so much. Probably because the general audience they were performing to. I know they're a huge texas band, I belive, and I'm up in New England, and like, everyone loves 'em here.
I'd love for them to definitely get back together and write more music. It'd definitely be something to marvel at.
A real solid album to check out if anyone's into a somewhat heavy, but not entirely heavy at all album, "I am Hollywood" by He Is Legend. It's really different from their previous album 90125, and their recent album, Suck out the Poison.

Highway 61 Revisted by Bob Dylan - If you have never listened to Dylan start here, you will be amazed.
American Beauty and Workingman's Dead by the Grateful Dead - The Dead's concert stuff is when they are at their best, and I have my favorite concerts that I have heard, but since this is favorite album, these are my two favorite studio albums of theirs.
Quah by Jorma Kaukonen - Just started listening to this guy, and he his great, and this is probably his best album. Jorma used to be the guitarist of Jefferson Airplane, but this stuff isn't like that, it is more folky.
Close to the Edge by Yes - I have the bonus tracks version, but need I say anything about this album?
Music From Big Pink by The Band - A classic.
I have many other albums that are just below these, but I had to limit it to five, and some of the bands I listen to I only have bootlegs of their concerts. No "albums" per say.

The Shepards Dog- by Iron and Wine
Not many people have heard of this band but they are kind of like Band of Horses and The Shins. Thats because the same label owns all three. I highly recommend them though.
Is that because their last four albums all sounded the same?
Last 4? Errr...
Opiate EP (1992)
Undertow (1993)
Aenima (1996)
Lateralus (2001)
10000 Days (2006)
huh?
I'll agree that the last two sound similar, but nothing like Aenima, and definitely nothing like Undertow.
If you're talking about the Salival box set, that doesn't count either, it's a live performance.
I really can't understand how great an album can get if it was realesed last year
Simple. If you give it a listen and it sticks to your brain, and if you can't stop hearing it in your head, and you start listening to it constantly at home, on your mp3 player on your way to work, and you feel this is the best music you've heard in AGES, then it surely has the potential to rank on a best albums list.
Having said that, some of my other fave albums have took ages to reach that status. Like Aenima, which took some 18 months between the moment of purchase and permanent residency in my stereo.

My top three would go something like this (no particular order).
David Bowie - Station to Station
This album is just great, I enjoy every song off of it. The song Station to Station is, in my opinion, one of the greatest of all time.
Talking Heads - Fear of Music
I just can't explain how wonderful this album is, they do absolutely nothing subpar in it. The lyrics, and instrumentals fit perfectly with one another fluently throughout the entier album. Life During Wartime is also one of the best Talking Heads songs ever.
Mott the Hoople - All the Young Dudes
It's really too bad Mott the Hoople never became a huge success, this album is what I would describe as perfect. I don't know if Hoople is right for everyone, but if you have ever heard of them and wanted to go out and pick some of their stuff up, this should be the first album you buy.
Oh yeah Deja Entendu by Brand New is pretty fucking special as well. And by special, I mean mind blowing.

It made me seem like a total noob back then, but this is the album that got me into them. My cousin showed me the Chop Suey! video, and at the time we just thought it was the greatest shit ever. As much as I like the Hives, I didn't like this album at all. They didn't change their style even a little bit, and all of their songs sounded way too similar. Maybe if there was some differing sounds, instead of the same 4-chord riffs, this would have been a great album.

It has some of my favorite songs on it. It was the first album I had heard from Spoon. Also, one of the first albums I bought on vinyl.
I own and love way too many albums to pick just one. So I'm going to go with the very first album I really listened to and dug. At age 9, upon its release, Red Hot Chili Pepper's Californication was the flap of a butterfly's wings that began my interest in music, which now boasts a collection of over 200 albums spreading across all possible genres.
My sister bought Californication, but I'd always borrow/steal it and listen to it over and over again. (Mind you, this was 1999 when burning CDs was barely heard of.) Without it, I may be into music as much as I am now. But since I hadto start somewhere, I'm very glad that it was with this album.

Californication was definitley something special. It was musically spiritual, considering the guitarist just got out of rehab, but it was melodically experimental. Anthony Kiedis' singing (although they were never great), were actually pretty good and filled with soul.

The Wall - Pink Floyd. Say what you want about it being a Roger Waters solo album, it's nothing short of a masterpiece. Every second is absolutely flawless. My first time listening to it is an experience that I will always remember.
The wall isn't my favorite accomplishment of the Floyd though. Echoes is the most perfect musical experience in existence. In my opinion anyway. The other half of Meddle is cool too, but fails in comparison to Echoes. Thus making The Wall my favorite.
I agree with the post above : The Wall is fucking perfect.
Jeff Buckely's Grace would come close though.

There are a lot of albums that I would consider perfect, but my absolute favorite is Infernal Love by Therapy?. It's a masterpiece from beginning to end that creates a stunning melancholic atmosphere accompanied by great lyrics and song writing. It took me a few listens to get into, but it grows on me more and more with each play.
Others that I hold in high esteem are:
Weezer - Pinkerton
Pixies - Doolittle
Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R
Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Hüsker Dü - New Day Rising
Air - Moon Safari
maudlin of the Well - Bath

The Wall - Pink Floyd. Echoes is the most perfect musical experience in existence.
I don't really know how to put it other than yes, Echoes is possibly the greatest mix of everything in music. However, Meddle really feels like an incomplete album with no direction.
Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd: For some reason the first time I heard this album I said to myself, "This beats the hell out of The Wall and even Dark Side." What really intrigued me about the album is how these 10-13 minute long songs could keep me listening and relaxed without even having lyrics for the first 8 minutes because the instrumentals were so much like a voice.
Honorable Mentions:
Legend - Bob Marley and the Wailers
Tommy - The Who
Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles

OK Computer by Radiohead. Sometimes if it comes on, I think I'm not in the mood...but before the end of the first song I'm into it, and by the end of the last song I wish it weren't over
Holy shit, I have the exact same feeling here. As soon as I hear that final chime at the end of "The Tourist" I feel incredibly calm and relaxed and want to hear it again.
Heres my definite list:
OK Computer: Well, duh. Some people claim its depressing, but for me, it is exactly the opposite. Whenever I hear this CD I just feel so filled with joy and even if I am horribly depressed I feel instantly better. Not to mention this has to be the most skillfully written and arranged album I have ever heard. The whole album is like a river, it just flows.
Kid A: Yeah, I know, another Radiohead album. This one just hooks me with its eerie soundscapes. Listening to this album for me is like reading a good book, even more so the OKC. Not to mention my favorite song (Idioteque) is off of this album.
BloodSexSugarMagick The best CD Red Hot Chili Peppers has ever made. It has the tightest funky sound they ever managed to put on a CD, and its songs range from passionate to downbeat. A classic of the '90's
Loveless Most difficult CD I have ever listened too, yet one of the most rewarding ones. My Bloody Valentine both made shoegazer music what it is, but at the same time killed it, for this CD set such high expectations for other bands in the genre. This CD has such indescribable sonics that can make you feel like you are on some trippy drugs or are half-asleep.
Burial Produced by a anonymous DJ, this is a masterpiece of Dubstep. Listening to this album almost makes you feel as if you are wandering through an abandoned building filled with ghosts. Incredibly haunting, with some great beats as well.

Mott was a huge sucess. Atleast if you compare to what I see as non-suscessful bands. Who hasn't heard All the Young Dudes?

My favorite album would have to be "Absolute Garbage" the 2 disc set by Garbage.
I love how they chose their best songs out of all 4 of their albums, along with some b-sides, like #1 Crush.
I also love the remixes they chose to put on the CD.

Doppelganger - the Fall of Troy
Bone Palace Ballet - Chiodos
the Tiger and the Duke - the Sound of Animals Fighting
Act II: the Meaning of, and All Things Regarding Ms. Leading - The Dear Hunter

London Calling, also.

I also would like to add Wincing The Night Away by The Shins. It's such a beautiful and spacey album, and every song (maybe except one) is amazing. Even a one-minute song, "Pam Berry", is awesome. My favorite songs off the album would be "Sea Legs", "Australia", "Sleeping Lessons", and "Split Needles".

My favorite album to listen to is Kanye West's Graduation. Being that I'm black and most others are of a different race... they probably don't know who this is. He is a rapper.
Graduation is easily Kanye's weakest album. Late Registration was MUCH better.
And why wouldn't white people, or anyone other than black people for that matter, know about rappers?

Haven't heard of him.
My favourite albums as of now are:
Black Holes and Revelations by Muse - For some reason I really like the pop-like aspects in their music. Map of the Problematique is fucking amazing.
You'll Rebel to Anything by Mindless Self Indulgence - I love the song of the same title as the album cos it makes fun of those silly emo children that think the entire world is out to get them. And everything else is awesome too.
And who can forget The Golden Age of Grotesque by Marilyn Manson? I don't even know why I like it so much.

Rossz Csillag Alatt Született by Venetian Snares is currently my favorite, the way the drum & bass mixes perfectly with the orchestra work always blows my mind.
Honorable mentions include
Lonesome Crowded West by Modest Mouse, purely because of the tone of the songs, multiple mood enjoyment and play-along guitar.
And last but not least,
Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) by The Wu-Tang Clan, what needs to be said?

Neurosis - Through Silver in Blood
Cult of Luna - Somewhere Along the Highway
Red Harvest - Cold Dark Matter
Mastodon - Remission
Mastodon - Call of the Mastodon
Ahab - The Call of the Wretched Sea
godspeed you! black emperor - f#a# infinity

Gojira - The Link
Gojira - From Mars to Sirius

I must say the GY!BE album Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven has grown on me quite a lot but their album Yanqui U.X.O. is an absolute masterpiece. Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls is an amazing song that just builds and keeps you in anticipation of the climax and when it happens, it's like little people are having sex in your ears.

I might as well say this now, because I don't really remember what album it is. I think it's the album "Stunt" by Barenaked Ladies?
Why? Because it has the song "If I had a million dollars."
That song is just pure class. And secondly, it's never going to get old. It will ALWAYS be a good, listen-to-it-for-almost-anything song.

At the moment I can't stop listening to
Panic at the disco - Pretty.Odd
Boys like girls - Boys like girls
both Riot and All we know is falling - Paramore
but my all time favorite is probably a toss between;
Enema of the State or Take of your pants and jacket both by Blink 182

Good choice. Though, if you listen to Orchid it's pretty hard to find a song you won't like. Blackwater Park is usually everyone's favorite Opeth pick. The Funeral Portrait alone makes it a badass album.

Meh. Opeth is alright. I have a hard time getting into them. To me, they're music seems to be raher unimaginative. Although, they do have some VERY good riffs at their disposal.
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV: Led zeppelin, amazing.
AC/DC - Highway to Hell: It just rocks.
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication: Love this album, the very first of them that I heard.

No, Shoe has a point, they are quite repetitive, but I love the atmosphere created because of that repetitive structure, The just doesn't like the fact all the songs sound similar, and I don't blame him.

Ahh. I haven't heard much. :( I'm new to metal, as I've said, and at the moment, I'm in sort of a limbo, not listening to anything... :(
I HAVE heard Blackwater Park. ROFL. There's a funny music video to it on YouTube... It's got four Japanese girls dancing to it.
The words 'Blackwater Park Hinoi team' can get you to there. Hehehehe.
It's so disorientating in a way.

I love "Fallen" by Evanescence, and also "We Are Not Alone" by Breaking Benjamin. The songs express my emo-y emoness.
Recently my favourite album is Hold your Colour by Pendulum. But two of my all time faves are Golden Age of Grotesque and Antichrist superstar by Marilyn Manson. Also, we can't be forgetting Myths of the Near future, Klaxons or anything by Muse.

I just picked up an awesome album by a rather obscure doom metal band called Zoroaster. The album is called Dog Magic and it is quite possibly the heaviest, most punishing slab of sludge I've ever listened to. It may very well get a place in my Top 10, as well.

So far, I think my favorite album right now is Is This It? by The Strokes. It has some really great songs on there.
A few others that come close are Veni Vidi Vicious by The Hives, and Elephant by The White Stripes.
Oh, and if anyone picked up the new Foxboro Hot Tubs album, message me or reply to this or something about how it was please.

The Great Cold Distance by Katatonia is my favorite. For a metal band, their songs are very melodic and have a unique ambience to them. The vocals complement the instrumentals very well.

Metallica - Black album
Megadeth - Youthanasia
Pearl Jam - Rearviewmirror best-of album
Black box revelation - Set your head on fire
Oasis - What's the story (morning glory)
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication
Wolfmother - Wolfmother
So Megadeth might seem a bit weird in this list but i love the riffs in certain songs, especially 'The Killing Road'.

I'd also like to add to my list, XX by Mushroomhead. I started listening to them more when I joined my friend's band, where we play Industrial (specifically EBM). Hence, I started listening to more Industrial bands like Skinny Puppy, and KMFDM. Mushroomhead was in that list, and just about every song on XX is gold. There's variety in the entire album, but each song has it's characteristic that makes it a Mushroomhead song. My favorite songs on this album are Never Let It Go, Xeroxed, and 43.

Well, first I'd say this would be different if it were what I considered to be the BEST. But in terms of enjoyment:
1. (in this order) Amnesiac, OK Computer, Hail to the Thief, Kid A, In Rainbows, The Bends - all by Radiohead. What can I say other than the most definitive and consistently fucking brilliant band of the last 15 years (we shan't mention Pablo Honey). I could go over each album individually, but I won't. It speaks for itself really.
7. In The Aeroplane Over The Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel. Would be at the top of my "Greatest" list, because I think that it is far superior to any of Radiohead's albums (there, I said it), but it lacks the enjoyment factor. The whole thing is so overwhelming I can only listen to it occasionally. But it's the most raw and emotional album and deepest (and emotionally disturbed) lyrics ever penned. How I wish they would make another album.
-Intermission: It all gets somewhat wishy-washy from here, most just albums I'm listening to at the moment and enjoying.-
8. Funeral - Arcade Fire
9. Illinois - Sufjan Stevens
10. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes. This is a very new addition, but a breathtakingly beautiful album. I highly recommend it to any fans of more alternative folk stuff.
Honourable mentions to: Los Campesinos!, Modest Mouse, Sleater-Kinney, Interpol, The Dodos, M.I.A, The Flaming Lips, Pink Floyd, Joy Division, Okkervil River.
I have to say that I find it amusing that people say Muse and not Radiohead, who still have the stretch marks from birthing them. Not that I don't like Muse, just, ya know.
OK Computer and Kid A are some of the most depressing albums I've ever heard (i'm not saying they're bad, infact they're my favourites). How can they make you happy? I admit some songs make me happy (Airbag, Let Down in a weird way that I can't explain, Treefingers, etc) but like, jesus. No Surprises? Motion Picture Soundtrack? Optimistic? Exit Music (for a film)? I can't help but almost break out in tears with those songs.

I find that the mood I am already in makes a difference. If I'm happy, I can listen to any of it and be happy, but if I'm feeling melancholic. I've always maintained that Radiohead songs create atmospheres which are dictated by the listener's mood. If you choose to look into it that much, of course.
