View Full Version : Your Favourite Book as a Kid

Maybe this isn't "Literature", but everyone had a favourite book as a kid.

I was born in 1990 so these were my favourite books from about 93 to 96.

I still have about 20 of those "Little Golden Books". My favourite was the Tawny Scrawny Lion.
http://a6.vox.com/6a00b8ea0714f21bc000cd97881126f9cc-500pi
It's about a lion who ate a bunch of animals, so the animals went to these bunnies and told them to fatten up the lion so he wouldn't be able to run. I really liked the illustrations in it and the expressions on the lion's face are priceless.

Another one is The Elephant's Child by Rudyard Kipling.
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/0152253866.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
The Elephant's Child is the terrifying tale of how elephants got their long noses. I'm not sure why I liked this one. It's a really scary book that discourages curiosity. The copy I had was illustrated by someone else than the picture above. The pictures were a lot darker and scarier. But we had a record (yes, a vinyl record) to go with it so we'd listen to the record while looking at the pictures in the book.

I was a big fan of the Magic School Bus books back in the day. I'm certain they taught me more than elementary school ever did.

I just found the record that came with The Elephant's Child. It's narrated by Jack Nicholson with music by Bobby McFerrin.

I have a bunch of those Little Golden Books still too.

My favorite book was this huge book of Nursery Ryhmes. I thinkt he reason I liked it so much is because it was the first book that I ever read through by myself.

Dr Seuss was awesome. I still love Green Eggs and Ham and The Cat in the Hat.

Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales were a favourite too, but some of them sort of scared me sometimes.

You just can't beat Green Eggs and Ham, also Snugglepot and Cuddlepie (possibly only if your Australian).

When I was a kid I loved Goodnight Moon. I also had this book Anansi and the Moss Covered Rock which couldn't get enough of. You can't beat a spider that steals all the animals' fruit by making them fall asleep with a moss covered rock!

The Arthur books by Marc Brown were my favorites and they were how I learned English, as my first language is Spanish. Read these when I was 4.

It's pretty hard to pick a single book but I really loved the Redwall series. I read them pretty much from grade 3 until I got to middle school. My favorite out of the series is definitely Salamandastron.
http://www.redwall.org/images/Salamandastron.jpg
The books are all about mice, rats, hares, badgers, and voles who are very human-like and have battles and whatnot. There was a shitty T.V. series for a while but it sucked.

First time I ready it was probably when I was 7 or 8, and I read it a few more times before I hit junior high.

But yeah, Redwall was my favourite series as a kid, I loved it. I still have all the books on my bookshelf so when my girlfriend (who's intimidatingly well read and intelligent) saw my book collection she must have thought I had the reading age of a twelve year old.

Um, as a very small kid my favorite book I think was pretty much anything by Dr. Seuss.
When I was in elementary school, my favorite was The Green Mile by Stephen King.
Uh, Jr. High was the Dark Tower Series.
9th grade was Ender's Shadow
10th was The Edge Chronicles (hey screw you, I can be nostalgic)
11th is currently Kafka, Palahniuk, Gaiman, and also Samedi: The Deafness by Jesse Ball

Way back was probably Oh the Thinks You Can Think by Dr. Seuss. I still burst out laughing at every page. But what really got me into reading was the first Harry Potter book. I was about 4 or 5 when it came out, and it was the first "real" book I ever read. Naturally I've been a fanatic ever since...although it has become somewhat of a guilty pleasure.

ZOMG REDWALL! I completely forgot, that was my 4-6th grade, right there. God, those moles were awesome. The series got really sinister, though, when Jacques killed of the little kid rabbit by poison, and then the King Badger ripped him to pieces.

When I was really young I loved the book The Story of Ferdinand and pretty much of all Shel Silverstien's books. In kindergarten I loved the American Girl books as well. In the mid-elementary school I graduated to Prince Caspian being my favorite. I love all of Narnia books, but Prince Caspian is my favorite. And I read the Series of Unfortunate Events up until the end of middle school. I lost interest around the 11th book... I really should finish those one day. And my favorite book of all time as a child was The Giver. I read that in 4th grade, and I've read it so many time's I've lost count. I absolutely adore the book.

I loved this book called The Damp and Daffy Doings of a Daring Pirate Ship. It had no words, just these great illustrations. Bright colors, really fun. And I like the idea that it tells a story, but there's not a single word. Was also a big fan of The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins. Not so sure if it was the story I liked so much, or just the book. It wasn't like the other Dr. Seuss books I had. It was a lot bigger and looked fancier.
When I was in middle school everyone was reading R.L. Stine and Christopher Pike. So, I got into those a little before switching to better stuff.
But, probably my favorite childhood book ever is James and the Giant Peach. I don't reread books a lot, but that one I read once a year every year for probably 10 years.
Too bad the movie sucked ass.

I was really into the Goosebumps and Animorphs books as a kid, Goosebumps in particular. I too agree with Derelict about Hatchet, Brian gets rescued too soon and the whole book is just spoiled because of it. I really enjoyed Gary Paulson's books though, he was a good writer. Also I got into Stephen King pretty early on because of my mom, she gave me The Gunslinger and that started my obsession with the whole Dark Tower Series.

Are these the same characters that are on that new cartoon show on either Nick or Cartoon Network? I can't think of the title now, it's something kind of redundant like The Mister Men or something. I think they must be, or there are some serious copyright issues.

I read these in french, and I assume they were traductions. The characters were all named after their little "speciality". One was Mister Greedy, Mister Curious, etc.
Is it the same case for that show you're talking about ?

Edit: I found it on the Cartoon Network website. It is called The Mr. Men Show and it is actually exactly the exact same characters from the books I was talking about.

Did no one read The Magic Tree House series? not only were the full of dangerous adventures, they were educational too. I also remember reading a lot of Roald Dahl. My first chapter book was, i am pretty sure, The BFG. i think i first read it in first grade.

Hey I don't think anyone mentioned The Boxcar Children. I read tons of those. I don't think I have ever heard of the Magic Tree House Series. Something about it sounds familiar, but I haven't read it.

EDIT: Found Abbey's posted it already. Dang. But here's a sample page in an attempt to pique interest from the non-readers.

I loved The Rainbow Fish and The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
Did both of them as plays in German class when I was about 6... in Die Regenbogen Fisch I was a minor fish who said, "Don't be a party pooper!" and in the Kleine Raupe Nimmersatt I was the person who stood there with a big sign showing what day of the week it was.

The Watsons Go To Brimingham
You just brought a tear to my eye remembering that.

And personally I fucking loved The Seventh Tower Trilogy by Garth Nix(coolest name EVER). MY favorite of the series would be Aenir, because of how imaginative the world of Aenir was.

I taught myself to read at age 3 and I read all the Curious George books vigorously, my Kindergarden teacher didn't believe I could read when my parents showed her how fast I was reading. She thought my parents had recited the books to me. I used to go to my neighbors house when I was like 5 and she would sit down with me and get out a whole bunch of little golden books and made me read them. That was fun.

Berenstein Bears! Oh god, I loved those books. And I still read Redwall.

Oh, man, I loved the Berenstein Bears. I owned about fifty of those books, and now, on occasion, even though I'm almost 21, I'll occasionally watch the TV on PBS. I'm not even sure I have a favorite. They were all SO good.

I fucking HATED those books. It was always "Too Much This" or "Too Much That." The stupid bitches were always getting "too much" of something and becoming brats about it. I was afraid my parents would read them and decide not to let me have too much fun.

I DID love the Chronicles of Narnia. I stayed up all night reading those books. Amazing. Also loved the Redwall series, Madeline L'Engal, and Tolkien.

When I was REALLY young I was crazy about Dr. Seuss. My first book that I read all by myself was "The Foot Book," which is ironic because my last name is Foote.

Oh, and definitely the Rainbow Fish, Possum Magic and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Plus Guess How Much I Love You. I loved that book, purely because my nan gave it to me and even though I was like 4, I still remember her whispering that she loved me to the moon and back when she gave it to me. Sweet.

The Chronicles of Narnia, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and Paddington Bear stories.

Actually, while on the subject of fond childhood memories, does anybody else remember Pinky and the Brain? I loved that show.

I loved that damn Enchanted Wood, far-away-tree series, they're actually re-releasing them with different character names because "Fanny" and "Dick" are too offensive... I also enjoyed Mr Pinkwhistle, The Wishing Chair and Paddington Bear.

Well, there was this story i used to make my mom tell me every night before I went to bed. It was about how I would be livesaver PINK POWER RANGER and i would fight off the purple people eater! I always won the battle..

How fucked up would it be if Ambutt's mom told the story one night, and Ambutt ended up being killed by the Purple People Eater?
"....and the Lifesaver-Pink Power Ranger - that's you, Ambutt! - suffered a horrendous death that, had she lived long enough, would have most assuredly induced permanent mental incapacitation. The end!"
*Kisses child's forehead*
"Goodnight honey, I love you."

I never read children's books. The very first books I started reading on my own were kid's encyclopedias of many sorts, and, while it didn't make me really smart I sometimes know some stuff normal people wouldn't. First fiction books I read were Gerald Durell (or however his name is spelled in english), they were about animals and adventures, and funny too, so I really loved them. Mind you, I am talking about 11-12 years old, not 6-7.

Mog the Forgetful Cat by Judith Kerr, The Giant Jam Sandwich, The Moomins and Spot the Dog. :D
The Mog books really meant something to me. But I was a bit depressed when the author bumped Mog off in the final book. :*(
