View Full Version : How does music help you?

I know that for some people, myself included, music can be more then just something to listen to. It can be used to stimulate your senses and to help you achieve certain things you wouldn't normally be able to achieve.
For example, my friend and I, when we write stories and such we always need to have a certain style of music to help motivate us or to stimulate our creativity. The style of music can differ from story to story, but the fact remains that it can really be more then simply pretty to listen to.
So my question to you is, do you use music in different ways? It could be as simple as to help you get to sleep or to help you relieve anger and frustration. And what kind of music helps you with those things?
For me if I'm angry or frustrated I like to listen to angry music, cause strangely enough it relaxes me and gets my anger out. I'll usually listen to something screamo, like Alexisonfire to do that.
Listening to rap let's me drift away and makes time go by faster when I'm at work or walking somewhere. It also helps stimulate me while writing for some reason.

It's the same when I write. I have to be listening to something. Usaully the style of music corresponds with the tone of the part I'm writting at that moment.

Listening to music gets me in the mood for writing sometimes, too. Though, I don't like to listen while I write. Hearing the lyrics while I'm trying to think of words to write messes me up. Sometimes I listen to music to fit a mood, either to help me hold onto a mood, or to help me get over a mood.

I'd like to refer to music as an "emotion booster."

I listen to music while I'm doing math or art homework or things like that. Somehow, it helps me concentrate. I can't listen to music while I'm writing, though. I get too distracted.
Emotional: When I'm down, I find it very cathartic to listen to sad music. This way, instead of denying the thing that makes me feel depressed, I stand in it, thus getting stronger because of it. Radio Head, Air, Portishead are preferences in this category.
Hangover: Anything loud, rude and, well, loud again seems to make me feel a little more human when I'm hungover. Nonpoint, Hed PE, Marilyn Manson are good for times like these.
Studying: I can't study to anything with lyrics, well mostly. But I do find my concentration is not only heightened but lengthened when I listen to drum and base. Ronni Size, Goldie and the like are good for studying sessions.

It helps me remain placid if need be.
I listen to music at work so I can stay focused. If I don't I get distracted and don't get any work done, like right now.

Radiohead helps me a lot when I am feeling depressed. Their music is sad, yes, but for some reason listening to sad music makes me feel a lot better about myself. Best song for this is probably "The Tourist". Whenever I hear that song I can't help but feel better.
Chill electronic music also helps a lot when I need to study, Sigur Rios is excellent for that.

Music doesn't help me in anyway. I listen to it just so I can enjoy the silence. Or, the sound. Whatever!
I listen to classical when I'm writing. Bach, Tchaikovsky etc. Under other circumstances I probably wouldn't, I prefer music I can sing and dance along to, but it stimulates me when I have block for some reason.

When I'm doing something tedious I like listening to really fast hardcore music. It just make the time go faster. I usually listen to reggae, 1st wave ska or Radiohead when I'm chilling.

I usually listen to hardcore punk and the genres associated with it, I don't know why it just makes me feel better. For relaxing I like psytrance in particular. Oh, and The Smiths! You can never go wrong with The Smiths.

I listen to music when I am writing research papers. It stimulates me, but it has to be something that can fade into the background. Coldplay is usually ideal for this, and sometimes Radiohead, whereas Nine Inch Nails tends to be distracting. I also use my instrument as a tool. I play the viola, and if I work on a solo piece that I am not very good at it tends to ease my anxiety.

You've never used to music to help you when you're in a bad mood or something? Or at least listened to it while you were sad or angry?
I'm sure music has helped you in some way other then just for the sake of listening to it.
Music just really helps me get into a zone of being calm, but still being concentrated. It's like my form of meditation; where you're completley out of it, but then again in total control.

For me listening to music is a form of procrastination and distraction. If I'm really stressed out about something I'll listen to my favorite songs to relax and forget whatever I was stressed about.

When I need to sit down and think about stuff, selected ambient works by Aphex Twin does wonders, When I'm angry or upset, some Norma Jean or Lamb Of God will do fine. Feeling down? Gorillaz or Grape Diggers. List is practically endless. I rarely listen to music for the sake of listening to it anymore.

As long as i like it music helps me get to sleep. Without it my brain tends to think far too much and I'm really bad at switching it off. With music to focus on I kinda just forget everything else. My parents find it kinda weird that black and death metal helps me sleep though.

All music does is help pass time quickly.
You can trick yourself into thinking it's deeper than that but you'd just be a liar and a fag.

Oh an article about Mozart! I'll try and read it as fast as possible!!
There's a couple of specific songs I leave on repeat while I'm working. It stimulates my brain and eliminates the weird silence around me.
Other than that I just listen to it cause it's... music...

Music is what you make it out to be, if for you it is simply there to make time pass by faster, then that's all music will be to you. But if you like music for the deeper senses it brings out then music, for that person, is more then simply sounds. Personally I find that music is a form of self expression that displays your emotion, and in such I receive certain emotions from music. So it's not just sound to me, it's a feeling.

Well, this is great, I think music actually does keep me sane. I've lost my iPod today and I'm tweaking out about it.

No, I cry when I'm sad, yell when I'm angry.
Music tends to distract me when I need to focus. There's no way I can let something I love so dearly go unnoticed in the background - if I'm listening to music, you better believe I'm paying (almost) 100% attention to it. If I don't like what I'm hearing, I just change it / turn it off.
When I'm feeling down, music helps a lot, but sometimes I just want to be left alone in silence.
When I'm feeling happy, well, you guessed it, music's there to join in on the celebration.
God, I chose the wrong career... :|

I listen to calm music when I'm working for school (not while studying, only while making exercises or stuff like that) and at random moments, while on the pc or anything.
Hardstyle or hardcore when I'm working out at the gym, makes me lift that bit more, it's encouraging, really.
If I didn't have my mp3 player with me at all times I'd be lost.
It helps me concentrate and listening to the lyrics of certain songs actually helps me figure certain situations out.

My music helps rids me of my teenage angst!
Me too, but now I'm bored and old.

I use it sometimes to help me feel like I still have teenage angst! The other day I woke up in such an angry mood for some reason. I had angry dreams, even. So, I wasn't quite right until I listened to some Atari Teenage Riot way too loud.

I like it because I hate silence.
Also I listen to a lot of music which makes me happy, and I love being happy.

Music usually helps me feel better when I'm angry or in a bad mood.
It's gotten to the point where I cannot fall asleep without music playing. I love ambient stuff to drift off too, or if I am sick of that, acoustic stuff is awesome and relaxing. I guess you could say it calms me down.

Uh, you cannot fall a sleep at all. You should give the following a try: Jack Johnson, Donovan Frankenreiter, Xavier Rudd. Awesome acoustic stuff.

I can't sleep to music, I think about it too much. Really helps in a meditative way normally, though. Also great for soundtracks. Most of how music is helpful is something that can't really be said, but I think that the most profound way music has helped in my life is the fact that a lot of girls like musicians. Yay.
I used to have music in order to fall asleep but that has changed. Now I listen to music whenever I can in my spare time because it relaxes me and makes time pass more quickly.
