Thanks for this interesting, thought provoking reply, Prof.
e: Never mind this part, the torrent is legit.
Sounds interesting so far, very sort of... bleak.
Hats of!

The cover is to sterile. I hate it. Add some devils or something.
BUT! I like the fact that it's instrumental.

The real story here is that this is how the new business model should be. A quarter of the album is free online, $5 will get you a download of the full length album, and $10 will get you a physical copy.

Wow, can't wait to download this.
Its amazing what Radiohead has started with its "pay what you want" download model, or buy the full disc for more money.
At least it seems like this is a variation off of that, seeing as they both did this as soon as they were released from a label.
I like most of the NIN stuff so this is decent.

Perhaps this will tie in with Year Zero and the movie planned on that album?

...There's plans for a movie for Year Zero?
Is the 5 dollars worth it for the whole thing? I'd love to support Reznor. Even though when downloading was first starting to become popular he was all like "Meh, those people are dicks." But now he's telling everyone "steal my music! See if I care!"
So, worth it?

Yeah. But it's pretty up in the air right now. Who knows if it will happen (http://www.cinematical.com/2007/03/07/trent-reznor-in-talks-for-year-zero-movie/). Haven't heard much news on it. Especially considering most news dates back to right before the album was released.
There are also plans for a Fight Club musical and Trent Reznor may do the music and whatnot for that.
Hurray Fight Club! (http://www.pastemagazine.com/action/article/6193/news/film/fight_club_musical_in_the_works_possibly_with_tren t_reznor)

Ah yeah, I've heard a few things about the Fight Club musical. I trust he'll create something very interesting if he's in charge of it.

Still, a Year Zero movie would be godly. NIN has some great music videos. A full-length movie would be great. Especially when the material would be all about an Orwellian society and the way the people want to fight back.

This CD is pretty amazing, good for studying, I think I'll buy the full 5 CD's.

We quietly released this album last night without any warning, and without any press. Because we know how devoted our fans are, we planned for an overwhelming response, and expected heavy traffic. To our surprise, the traffic was more than three times what we anticipated, and has only been getting heavier throughout the day. The response has been absolutely phenomenal, and we couldn't be happier,
I'll just get it from a torrent, like he suggested :indiff:

I don't think it's legal to download the entire album by torrent, although it's hard to tell, the Creative Commons license is rather confusingly worded.

I've listened to most of the 1st album now. It has some nice melodies, it's pretty much what you expect from Reznor. I haven't heard anything spectacular yet. Just your usual NIN.

If you get just the first CD from the official torrent I'm 99.99% positive it is legal.
Downloading all 5 CDs however, would be a no-no.

First I tried to download from it from the official site, but was unable to, so I just looked up the tracks on youtube to get a listen and thought they were boring as fuck.
But then I saw the torrent link and thought I'd download it after all. I really like it. I would say it's the hard rock of easy listening music.

Uh, good for you, you cheap bastard?
The actual CD is called Ghosts I-IV, while Ghosts I being completely free. I am not too into the whole just instrumental thing, and I'd much rather have NIN deliver a normal CD. But I've listened to Ghost I and it was pretty mellow, but still good. Though now I see why they are giving it out for free: It's the works of the Ghosts. I'm debating whether or not to dish out the $5 for the entire CD, because I wonder how often I would listen to just instrumentals (I only do that if they're just spectacular). Though Ghosts past 1 sparked my interest, I might just download them off of limewire or something.

I just listened to the entire Ghosts album, and it really wasn't bad. The industrialness of NIN has taken a back seat to a more Eno-esque ambient quality. It's quite enjoyable, but a rather rapid departure from previous efforts, including the bits of random instrumental music found in other albums. Not a bad record to chill out too, but not exactly mind blowingly amazing either.
I do however think that the real story (as mentioned before) is the drastically different approach to marketing and releasing this album. Kudos to Reznor for not pulling a Lars Ulrich and being a giant douche in the face of change.
