I only have four albums of his,
and since his discography is so extensive I'm
confused as to what I should check out.
I've been told his work from the 60's/70's
was his tour de force, and that everything
after that doesn't really match up.

So I need suggestions on what to acquire
and if there are any other artists from that
era that are worth a listen.
I.E captain beefheart/Can
sort of thing =o

My favorite Zappa songs are probably The Black Page, Catholic Girls, and Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?

I don't know much about his discography though, so I can't help you with that :( .

Are we talking just prog rock artist here or music like Zappa?

I was always a big fan of King Crimson. Way better than Yes in my opinion.

As for Zappa, I loved Hot Rats and the movie that followed.

Could you tell me which albums of his you have before I start suggesting? I'm a huge fan and own just about everything he has done.

It's really hard to find similar artists to Frank Zappa because he defied categorization, not to mention he changed styles several times, often within the course of a single song.

That said, I'd check out Mr. Bungle, The Fugs, The Mothers of Invention, Funkadelic (the early stuff), Mahvishnu Orchestra, Tom Waits, Adrian Belew, Jean Luc-Ponty, Buddy Miles, Jeff Beck, and the Soft Machine.

And The Mars Volta.

Hats of!

Mainly Prog. I'm already acquainted with modern progressive, though the earlier stuff seems to be more favourable.

Check out Apostrophe, Sheik Yerbouti, Joe's Garage, Zoot Allures, Lather, Uncle Meet, and We're Only In it For the Money. Pretty much in that order. Lumpy Gravy, Weasels Ripped My Flesh, and Burnt Weenie sandwich are also albums from around the same time. Good luck delving into his 60 plus albums!

My favorite is Them or Us and Bongo fury.

as for prog bands, anything to do with King Crimson, Emerson,Lake and Palmer , bands that Less Claypool is in, MMM and Peter Gabriel
