View Full Version : Progressive Rock, today?

Progressive Rock is a sub-genre of Rock. In the 70's it was one of the greatest of all genres and spawned many best-selling records. Amongst the bands were King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Supertramp, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Gentle Giant, Pink Floyd (some may argue about PF's proginess, they're stupid), Van Der Graaf Generator, Camel, Jethro Tull, Rush etc.
Well, this didn't last for so very long. Most prog died in the hands of Punk, Punk really hated complex music.
Only few bands were formed to play in the 80's (Marillion), but the numbers have grown and today most prog is mixed with metal (Dream Theater, Tool).

Yes, the name of the thread is "Progressive Rock, today?". I would like to get tips of prog that follows a more Symphonic/Space feeling like Yes, Genesis or Pink Floyd. I know bands like Mars Volta, but I would like more "Supper's Ready" then "In The Court of the Crimson King".

The only one that comes to mind is Coheed and Cambria.

I guess if you want some upbeat indie/prog. rock, i'd definitely recommend Death From Above 1979.

Get the song: You're a Woman, I'm a Machine.

Hope that helps!

Good choice *wink*. That album is all killer and no filler.

Also, one of my fave new bands has been touted as prog-rock (God knows why), but I think you might also like them for their spaciness and sense of musicianship. I'm talking about Battles and their "Mirrored" LP. Try the songs "Atlas", "Tonto" or "Rainbow"

Yeah, Death From Above 1979 is highly recommendable, but I wouldn't tag it was "prog rock".

Battles is a mix of madness and brilliancy. Crazy yet very catchy songs.

One of my fav's has officially been touted as prog-rock as well: dredg
Try their first LP "Leitmotif". A wonderful and brilliant mix of melodic and hard rock-elements, combined with several instrumental songs. Their later albums are of a softer and less proggy kind.

One's I can think of that aren't posted yet are Opeth (tho I've never seen much prog in them), Pain of Salvation, Mr Bungle maybe...
A friend just suggested Riverside and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum (never heard of em ^^)
Mostly metalinfluenced prog tho.
For modern symphonic prog I've been suggested to look into Neoprog.

I've got a problem with Porcupine Tree and other types of metalish prog mainly 'cuse it's to serious. I mean, every single song is often about censorship and rage against something. Most of it is to depressing (although, Pink Floyd too were rather depressing, atleast they had some with and irony in their lyrics and theatric voices, Rog).

But Spock's Beard seems rather intressting. I've heard of them before, but I didn't figure they'll be so noisy in a good way. Also, I've been listning to the Flower Kings before and it's seems to be amongst the most Symphonic.

Edit: Well, I do like Dream Theater

Tool is pretty good prog rock. Lateralus and Aenima are great albums.

Mr Bungle maybe...

Mr. Bungle are AWESOME, but prog rock? Schizo pop-rock-metal-jazz-anything, more like it. Great choice anyway.

Hence the "maybe" ;) Have no idea how to define them but I know some proglisteners who like them so I thought I'd throw em in ^^

Dream Theater is a prime example of ass-kickery, if I do say so myself. John Petrucci(guitarist) is fuckin' insane.

Tool is pretty badass too. Their drummer is flat-out inhuman, and Lateralus is an awesome album.

Transatlantic are great, except their slow, quiet songs are complete ass. There should be more kickass prog super-groups like them. Noone's mentioned Pain Of Salvation yet so yeah, check them out (despite the name they aren't a shitty prog metal band like Chodeheed And Cambria, zing!).

Also, some of Neal Morse's (Spock's Beard/Transatlantic vocalist) solo stuff is in-fucking-credible and some of it is terrible in my opinion. Have a listen and decide for yourself.

By the way, everyone else:
...I would like to get tips of prog that follows a more Symphonic/Space feeling like Yes, Genesis or Pink Floyd

Therefore, stop mentioning shitty bands like Tool that have no relevence to this request. Tool aren't even prog, more like Maynard having a cry about religion while Danny Carey plays in "6.5/8 time".

Good prog (in this thread):

Well yes, Änglagård (everyone who likes prog should know of the album Hybris) and Tool is both King Crimson-ish. But its a matter of how.

And for that matter, experimental prog, no. Zappa and Ummagumma is enough. But still, many of these bands is very intressting.

They are one of my favorite bands, but the thing is they did something different with each of their albums. There first had a really technical "prog rock" feel too it, the second El Ceilo was definitely more soft but still technical in its own way. The latest Catch Without Arms drew very far away from the other two and are more Alternative with a really heavy feel too it. I honestly think its hard to categorize them seeing as they try to constantly change while still having there own identity.
