Another thing I need a design for..
I make movies and I want to make my own production company. It would be called "Jack Faust Pictures". But it needs a logo.
I'm not exactly sure what I'd want it to be like, the "t" in Faust could be a cross (normal cross or backwards cross). Some cool fonts, maybe a picture of a demon or something. Or just a human with crazy eyes or... whatever.
If anyone has time, please experiment :)

Show us some movies!
Possibly, if we saw some of the movies, as Mr. Legrand suggests, we might be able to base a logo around the genre of which the movies are based. For example, if they are fun, family-friendly animations, we might make a colourful, bubbly logo. If they are horror, blood-and-gore-type movies, we make a bloody logo, and so on.

I can't show you any stuff right now. I haven't made anything worth mentioning yet anyway, mostly amateur stuff which is currently unavailable.
Go for horror, blood and gore. Some elements of science fiction perhaps. :)

It's against my principles to make logos for movies I haven't seen.

Here you go.
I wish I had more time to spend on it but I'm currently at work and didn't finish some details I had pictured and cleaned up some things. ( like "pictures")
Here's my take on it

Bad idea. It should be transparent so it fits in any background.
I think he means make a version of it with white text so it can be seen on a black background.

No, I didn't mean that.
Maybe you're right, Assassin.
Vesci's new version is awesome, though.

damn I left that font I used at work and can't remember the name...

Transparent backgrounds are good to have; however, I'm going to add to this that you should pick a color scheme and stick with it. Mine is almost always white with a black, dark red or similarly dark background. Using that basic concept for color on everything is a subtle part of marketing, helps make sure there's a definite 'feel' to the organization that carries through on most everything.
Also, being able to animate is good. With the eye thing right now, I can see some nice three to six second animations with the various parts separated.

Don't make your logo too complicated. With all the fancy crap going on in Vesci's logo, I don't even see your name, and then I see your name and I think "what's that doing there, that's making these great eyes look shit." Bad logo.
Name and picture should compliment each other.
Or you could go with Assassin's, where the name is the picture and it kicks ass.
Also, a simplistic logo allows for easier reproduction (if ever necessary), and if you ever want to animate it, also easier, and if you want to make the background transparent, also a lot easier.

Simplify the eye, enlarge the text and make it stand out more. Also have the eye darker and the text lighter. That would make it a good logo and keep the nice picture.

Oh my goodness.
Guys, design the logo in BLACK AND WHITE first. (That's complete black and white, no shades of gray.) See if it's legible.
If it is, THEN add the colours if you must.

Tyler, I am glad to see that someone else knows what logos are about!
Stylised, simple logos work best. As Tyler said, ALWAYS do B&W first if it works in black and white, it will work in colour. Your logo should be made up of simple "smashable elements" these are elements that if you take them out of the logo, they still work on their own... Pepsi's circle thing for example.

Actually they don't HAVE to be strictly black and white, but you do need only two colours that you can tell apart distinctly. Like McDonald's logo, which usually has red and yellow. Black and white's a good starting point.
Granted, McDonald's logo could have more complicated colours, perhaps using gradients and stuff. But in the end, the same logo also has to be workable in a tiny two-colour print on a cardboard box.

Thought i'd send an update, I actually might end up putting this design on a shirt. I work as a graphic artist in Los Angeles at a clothing line/screen printing shop, it would be knocked down to a two color ( maybe three ) job and end up with some text on the back of a black shirt.

Thanks, I'm practicing my logo-making skills, so that's a good thing to know.
I made a just black version:

And no offense or anything Vesci, really, but imo when I'd visit a site with a logo like that, I think it'd look kinda unproffesional
Vesci's looks like an angry 14 year old drew it. I know this because I was an angry 14 year old and I drew shit like that all the time.

Maybe this is just me, but didn't anyone else think, "why do you need a logo for a production company for a guy who hasn't made something worth producing yet?" Logos are important for marketing, but definitely not as important as having something to market.
Casalen

Yeah, I thought that, but it's a question of whatever he thinks he needs, not what's a good idea. Also, logos are good to decide on quickly so they can be embedded in productions to protect them and help recognition from the very first.

haha, perhaps it started out as a quick pattern.
The company I work for labels will be here: http://www.freesys.com/
It's more trendy/fashionable for young males 20-30
The guys that I prefer designs from are Renegade Apparel: http://www.renegade-apparel.com/
also
http://handsomedevilclothing.com/
Right now on their sites it's limited but their '08 spring and fall fashions are looking really great.
I get to work with them and their designs when they need something printed.

Sure they're good to have right away, but if you don't even have anything good enough to post on a discussion board like this one, are you really at the stage where a logo should even be a consideration? He can do what he wants, but my advice to Mr. Jack Faust would be: make a decent movie, then make a logo.
I do like Assassins logo, though. Simple, but not boring.

This is a modification of Vesci's work; it's simplified, most importantly. Meant to be seen as a logo and read easily rather than used as a t-shirt design, but the basic concept is still there:
http://www.kgpnet.net/other/jackfr2-2.png (it's easier to see in its own window)
This is also using Trajen Pro, my favorite font for everything.
