I heard the remix of Beat It done by Fallout Boy and John Mayer earlier today. I didn't think much of it at first, and having gotten home and listened to it I can honestly say I fucking hate it. I couldn't even sit through the song halfway, I think it's just that horrendous. They've taken a damn good pop song and made it into a shitty emo "rock" tune. The worst part is some people I know say it's one of the best covers they've ever heard.

So like in all of life's important issues, I'm gonna to ask a bunch of internet comic fanboys.

Anyone who says this song its terrible are just Fallout Boy haters. I've never been a fan of theirs, but this song really isnt that bad. The singer is horrible on this song, but that's about it.

They're just paying homage to Michael Jackson, so I don't see why it's such a big deal.

Heres the thing that I see when you try to do a cover of a song that came from someone like Michael Jackson it is pretty impossible to even come near his talent because hell he is Michael Jackson the king of pop. Personally the only cover of a Michael Jackson song that i've ever liked is Smooth Criminal by Alien Ant Farm.

Pelican Man

Granted, if you don't like Fall Out Boy, you'll hate this song. Y'know why? Because IT'S A FALL OUT BOY SONG. Fans of FOB would complain if they changed their style just to suit this cover, fans of the original will complain if the cover doesn't pay true to the original.

Really, they're not going to replicate the awesome pop hit that was Beat It, they're putting a new spin on it, and as such it really shouldn't be judged off the original.

The whole song just seems like an unnecessary cover. I mean they aren't really breaking new ground or putting an original twist on anything. Whining MJ lyrics and making piss poor attempts at being Eddie Van Halen will not gain you any kind of cred whatsoever.

So True ghoulz! I'm sorry but I could play any Fall Out Boy riff while I'm asleep. They have no talent whatsoever in my opinion and I think they are only REALLY popular because girls love them because they are sissies, and that guys like it so they can get chicks. I'm NOT making fun of their fans, but seriously this is the worst excuse of a band ever. They murdered the song in my opinion.

If you don't like it don't listen to it or pay attention to it. You're not being forced to.
No point ranting about it.

It was an average cover that offered nothing new. It would been a little better with someone else singing.

Ice_Mel
03-15-2008, 12:53 AM
The thing is that a song like Beat It should be covered only if you're going to add a new spin to it.
If you're just going to play it the way it is, it becomes pointless since that song is a pop classic that is just stuck in our heads forever the way it is.

Actually, now that I think about it, what's the point of covering a song if you don't give it some sort of new "flavor"? By the way, this doesn't mean just adding distortion to the guitars.

Your response doesn't make sense. "The song isn't bad. The singer is horrible in it." Those two statements totally contradict each other.

Also, I feel like you can't say something is the worst song of the year when there are still 9 months to go in the year. :indiff:

They don't completely contradict each other. I was just stating that while the song as a whole wasn't that bad, I didn't like the singing. Just because I think the vocals doesn't make the whole song bad.

I've been playing guitar for 4 years and i personally thought they made a huge letdown in that area. I'm not a singer but I didn't think he pulled it off. But that's just my opinion

Playing guitar for 4 years is no big achievement, don't be too proud of yourself there, champ.

Musical skill isn't all about difficulty, you know. Songwriting plays a big part in it, as does harmony, tone, voicings, etc etc.

Fall Out Boy ARE decent songwriters, like them or not. They write catchy songs, and seem to know at least a little musical theory.

reigninblood666

No I'm not trying to be proud of myself in anyway. I just thought that they could've done better. But see what you mean when you talk about songwriting, harmony, tone and soon. But I still stand by what I said about the vocals on THIS song. I didn't like their version. But thanks for correcting me in the other about the songwriting and stuff that has a large part as well.

I agree. The guitar riff sounds exactly the same, they sped it up slightly, and the lead singer is pretty much just yelling the words. It just seems like they sat around, said "Let's cover a Michael Jackson song", and recorded the first take.

But then again you really can't cover a Michael song unless you're giving it your own flavor (as Alien Ant Farm did). Because comparisons are inevitable. And when your cover is really just an un-innovative remake, the original is almost always going to be "better" because everyone already knows it and loves it.

Could have been better, could have been worse.

There aren't too many covers that rock anyway (AAF's version of Smooth Criminal being the exception). Yeah, most people start by playing covers as PRACTICE. Some people decide that's all they want to do, they stick to bars unless they completely rock the socks off the right people (Laser Spectaculor, A tribute to Pink Floyd for example). These guys could have done that much better with their music writing skillz (please not the z for "cool"), because let's face it, they have three LPs out.

I see the merit in the effeminate rock bands like the Fray and Fall Out Boy, Yellowcard, etc. But I really, really don't get it. I don't go hardcore metal, but I like my rock to have an edge. Punk and whatnot. The bands I mentioned, and there are many more, cater to girls. And their pussywhipped boyfriends.

Effeminate rock bands.

But like I said, I see the merit, I just don't like it.

I adore Fall Out Boy. I'm ashamed of it, but I've loved them since 02. Patrick Stump really does have a good voice and an incredible range, but that definitely was not a good song for him.

I study music theory and I could get some pretty awesome melodies off my guitar. (so you know first) Their guitarist could really learn to play cleaner than this, his tremolo picking sounds like a fucking retard trying to play the guitar with the side of his pick. And I can honestly say that the solo was sloppy and their choice of tone is absolutely horrible. It sounds like a cheap fucking thing you can get from a 4 watt amplifier (mine).

Their vocalist doesn't sound as bad as I expected. But after listening to this song 3 times I feel as if my ears are fucking killing me, especially the chorus. Fuck.

When I was listening to the song, I felt as if there was no bass, until I realized that so I had to try to listen closely to the song and there I found it. Atleast they could have turned their bass up or maybe NOT USE DISTORTION ON IT?

If I'd rate it, it would probably get a 5 or a 6, they got a pretty good tempo going throughout the song.

Peliman said it pretty well: If you don't like Fall Out Boy, you're not going to like it. It's freaking Fall Out Boy.

Covers aren't exactly uncommon in the musical world if you haven't noticed. Granted, they didn't take the song in a different direction, but, uh, who cares?

Fallout Boy's popularity comes from their catchy beats, and in my opinion, little more. I personally hate the band, but if I get trapped into listening one of their songs, it will likely be stuck in my head for a week.

However, having heard Beat it and then this version, I don't think it does it much justice.

the lead singer really is an ugly bastard isnt he? Guess that explains his constant whining. As far as Fall Out Boy songs go, I'd say this one is pretty good, but as far as covers go, pretty average, and in comparison to the original obviously its terrible, but maybe thats not a fair comparison to make.

Fall out boy in all their manufactured glory have some pretty profound lyrics; it's just too bad they're all poppy douches.

Anyone thats saying they're popular because their songs are catchy is deluding themself. Their songs are catchy, yes, but they are only famous because they are a cruel parody of 'Emo'. Emo is the new scene, everyone is saying that they like it now, but this isn't emo at all (Actually, none of the scene emo bands are). This is Pop-Rock labled as Emo.

What do you get when pussy-wannabe emos listen to Pop-Rock labled as Emo? A NEW FUCKING FAD! They don't like 'real' emo, so they took an MTV produced placebo. Thats the only reason they're famous, and the other bands that really are emo are still shat upon.

No, I'm not emo, but I do enoy some emo bands. And yeah I know I sounded really emo just then, but I just hate FoB alot.
