Three years ago, Lee Spievack sliced off the tip of his finger in the propeller of a hobby shop airplane.
What happened next, Andrews reports, propelled him into the future of medicine. Spievack's brother, Alan, a medical research scientist, sent him a special powder and told him to sprinkle it on the wound.
"I powdered it on until it was covered," Spievack recalled.
To his astonishment, every bit of his fingertip grew back.
"Your finger grew back," Andrews asked Spievack, "flesh, blood, vessels and nail?"
"Four weeks," he answered.
It's quite an article comprising of various ways to use this technology. Seeing as these kinds of advancements are taking place every day, when will we be able to get ourselves 'repaired' after a horrific accident? How would it even affect world population? It doesn't seem like a very expensive solution. :/

Whoa, that could be awesome. Think, you lose a limb because of a work accident, they put some powder on it and in like 3 months, you have a new working limb.

The only problem is that the person should train the limb from the start so it would probably be pretty problematic to walk on a regrown leg at the start.

Well after a few months it would probably back to its old self, if it really works, then it would be better to feel my leg, than a stump and a plastic thingie.

How does it know when to stop? What happens if I keep putting this powder on my severed cock?! Will it grow to massive lengths? If it can re-grow muscle whats to stop me from putting it on other parts of my body? How did the guy come up with this? Did he say, I've got a small wang let me see if I can't make something that will make it bigger?

But it's magic dust!
That is pretty damn cool, I thought I heard of something like this a while ago in the paper. If they get it working for limbs that would be amazing although I think it's quite a stretch between growing a finger tip and growing a leg. It could be possible though, I know the body can regrow a liver already without help.

Wow, this is quite impressive. The tip of a finger isn't that big, but with years of research there's probably something interesting we could use that powder for.
And growing back a head with a nose, mouth, teeth, eyes and brain is just completely stupid. It took 4 weeks to grow the tip of a finger back, you can easily expect 8 months to a year for an entire head. How do you plan on surviving that long without it ?
... oh wait, you've already mastered that.
FlamingPeanuts

You could not grow back an organ, you would need the specific adult stem cells for that area and they would have been lost. You could use it to repair an organ however. Im pretty sure your penis has some specialised cells so would not grow back properly.
yay i can spoil eveyones fun!

Since the skin is an organ, techincally the largest one, this stuff can regrow organs. SO THERE.

Could be pretty useful stuff, would only really be good for small stuff I suppose since if you get your leg cut off your pretty much fucked. I'd hate to think how long it'd take to grow a whole arm or leg back though, 4 weeks for like a 1cm fingertip, I presume it doesn't follow a set formula or a 1 metre limb would take like 8 years to grow back, it would probably still take longer than 4 weeks to grow back a leg though.

I don't buy into it. The only proof I saw was some geezer who cut a quarter inch of his finger off. The rest was we expect this and theoretically speaking that. Also it was on an American news article that opened with a pun.

I meant a whole organ, if you lost all your skin in a freak lawnmower accident you could not grow it back using this fairy dust.
EDIT: It just speeds up healing, nothing special. He only lost the tip of his finger. Could probably have not wasted his money on magic powder and healed all the same.
I think the fact that this regrew multiple organs, (muscles, skin, nails, capillaries) that it could grow back a severed cock. Why not?
FlamingPeanuts
03-24-2008, 3:52 PM
Because it just activates mitosis, causing the wound to heal. and stem cells to become body cells. if you severd off your whole penis this could not take place as the wound woult not contain the cells to make a new penis!
I too am a scientist, well-versed in the intricacies of organ regeneration, posting on an internet-based comic's forum and I disagree!

Could it grow back my ears? :fmita:
Actually, yes. It could grow new eyes for blind people as well.
For the people who're saying "it just speeds up healing":
It will change the body from thinking that it's responding to inflammation and injury, to thinking that it needs to regrow normal tissue.
If you completely sever a finger, it will not grow back. The wound will heal over but your finger will be gone forever. With this stuff, the difference is that they can theoretically re-grow your entire finger. Muscle, bone, the works. And apparently they're already doing it with bladders.
Sucks that businesses are investing in it. If medicine wasn't a big cash cow before, it is now.

Hickabod, you son of a bitch, I was just about to post that.
Would it be able to regrow something from a wound already healed? Or would you have to get this shit on there when the wound is fresh? Possibly create a new wound? What about if someone is born without legs, could it grow them some? Or would your body actually have to have already had them?
I want to know what Idioteque wants to know too. Could they alter some part of your DNA or some shit to think you need another limb and put some of this on your ass and get a sweet monkey tail.
Matterialize
03-24-2008, 7:34 PM
Probably, but you gotta get messy with genetic engineering for that.
If someone's missing limbs are caused by a genetic fault that's present in every cell in their body, I don't think that this would work, since the re-grown body parts are based on cells from the patient's body. :nerd:

Actually, a lot of the time missing limbs are not caused by genetics. In some cases, it was when the baby inside the womb punches outside of the amniotic sac and the limb stops growing. So I wonder even if the limb was never there if it could regrow.

Growing a tail would be pretty fucking awesome I must admit

Yes, if for what she was getting surgery on was genetic. Stem cells of your body still have the genetic material that you have, so you'd still be screwed. This video was awesome. It would not make your penis bigger. Your small penis is dictated by your crappy genetics. This powder stimulates your genetics into rebuilding the tissue instead of just leaving a scarred stump. So if you cut off your penis, survived the massive blood loss, and used this powder, you'd still be left with a pathetically small penis.
As someone with an A level in Human Biology, this is incredibly interesting and does sound theoretically possible. For those of you saying it takes 4 weeks to regrow limbs, you're morons. It took 4 weeks to regrow an inch of a finger. An entire arm would take fucking months. The arm/leg would still be fully functional like normal after the healing process was complete.

This just causes the cells to reproduce. It could not make a whole fucking arm! Normally if you cut your finger off the cells would reproduce enough to make a stub, because its the best way to survive, a fast recovery using the smallest amount of energy. But this just makes the cells grow more and makes the stub into your fingertip. Its ok when its just somthign simple like a fingertip, but a whole finger is much more complex, using joints, where muscle is connected to ect.
Also I googled this and it makes your nails grow realy fast too, the guy has to trim them every 2 days, so it does improve the rate of healing dramatically.
Sarge51
03-30-2008, 10:12 PM
Nails growing. That's freaking cool! I'd let them grow out to a ridiculous size and poke stuff from afar. Till I get bored, then finally cut them.
In any case. It's not being said that THIS could regrow a full arm or anything. But that the 'technology' can be used to possibly one day actually regrow full limbs.
