I've always had an interest in more experimental music, although I never really found a place to jump in and start heavily listening. One band that stands out to me is Sonic Youth, but I am unsure as to what album to buy.

Which of their albums should I start with? I am looking for one that is sorta in between their "artier" albums and their "mainstream" albums, so I can get a bit of a feel for the band.
EDIT: Another other suggestions for bands similar to Sonic Youth are appreciated as well.

Try Daydream Nation and Washing machine.

You should definitely start off with Daydream Nation, because it's the ultimate SY classic. I'd get Sister before Washing Machine though.

To be honest the only Sonic Youth albums I would avoid are Bad Moon Rising & NYC Ghosts & Flowers.

My only problem is affording all their albums, but this should give me a good starting point. I think I'll start with Daydream Nation then move from there.
Thanks guys

You don't have to afford anything....

And while you're at it you should look into Pixies and Joy Division. Just sayin'.

Joy Division I've listened to a little bit, and I didn't really like it.
I have had the Pixies recommended to me before, I think I'll check em out.

Yeah, The Pixies are one of the great bands during the 80's. I suggest checking out "Dead" "Hey" and "Bone Machine", for starters.

Get the whole of Doolittle.
You should give Joy Division a second chance,
