View Full Version : Which Cartoon Is Better?

For me it's a coin flip between Family guy and Southpark. I choose Family guy for no particular reason. Simpsons was the first of it's kind really, and Futurama doesn't really have enough episodes to compare.

Simpsons because it was really the first of its kind like Con said. Without The Simpsons we wouldnt have Family Guy, South Park or Futurama.

Family Guy simply because its the most random and funny cartoon ever made.
Futurama since Simpsons season 9 etc... Family Guy and South Park is hit or miss for me.

Futurama doesn't really have enough episodes to compare.
Futurama has plenty of episodes you asshat.
Although all genius, South Park really delivers on Fan Service and I really haven't seen an episode I didn't like, like I've seen annoying ones but all of them to me are very witty and seem to keep the mood and never wither.

Family Guy is random, therefore it only manages to be moderately funny. I watch it occasionally on youtube.
The Simpsons and Futurama are both really funny, and tend to use sophisticated humor.
You need to be in the right mood to watch South Park; Most people just watch it because it's fucking funny, but the makers insert their own opinions when they make episodes about issues (global warming, Guitar Hero, Al Gore, Pokemon, Scientology) and it seems like the best to me. I don't get why people bash it just because it has a bit of profanity.

Simpsons: While a pioneer, quality has been in steady decline for more than half of the length of the series. Even when the episodes were well-written, the jokes weren't as good. The other three shows changed the game.
Family Guy: Lately it's been hit or miss, but who doesn't love the way they hit you over the head with immature humour? Tastefully tasteless.
South Park: Never got into it. A bit too low-brow.
Futurama: No room for one more. The humour is a bit different and can't be compared to the other three.
My pick: Family Guy
Nothing beats Futurama NOTHING. The Simpsons was good for the first couple seasons but then became pretty fucking stupid in my opinion. Same for Family Guy though occasionally there is a good episode but most of the time its random bullshit. I used to love south Park as a kid but I grew out of it.
The way I see it I choose Futurama because it didnt have the time to become stale and repetitive like the other choices have.
South Park: Never got into it. A bit too low-brow.
And yet you chose Family Guy..
But for me, it's gotta go to Futurama. Although short length wise, they have more consistent quality and humor then South Park or The Simpsons. Also, the show has subtle wit to it, you either catch it or you don't. Although I still think The Simpsons are funny, I would take Futurama any day. I'm also sick of people saying Family Guy is the be all, end all cartoon; it has it's moments, but recently it's just been trying to visually entertain their viewers with really quirky parodies that the Simpson's probably already did.
I like Futurama the most. It's the only that makes me laugh out loud consistently and also the only show that ever brought a tear to my eye (When I first saw the episode with Seymour)
Family guy can make laugh like crazy sometimes but it can also miss horribly whith some very unfunny garbage that leaves me in disgust.
The Simpsons is enjoyable to me no matter what but not as funny as Fututrama.
South Park is great satire, but it has some really bad episodes.

Family fucks the world. No other show compares to it's awesome analogies and completely random and inappropriate jokes that throws you off at the last second.
*remembers chicken fights #1, #2, #3*
Simpsons would win, but all the bad episodes count against all the good ones, so it takes a back seat to South Park and Futurama.
They are both funny, but South Park is better written and generally more entertaining.
Family Guy is only good for a cheap laugh, and only once per episode.

The Simpsons. No carbon copy can beat the original awesome show.
Although FG's funny, it has some really crappy episodes and has started to be very edgy just because it can. South Park just isn't funny anymore. Futurama is funny as hell, but hasn't been going long enough to beat the Simpsons.
The Simpsons is just an all-around awesome show.
I'm going with the Simpsons. It is after all the grandaddy of edgy cartoons.
Why didn't American Dad feature? Or is one cartoon by Seth Macfarlane enough?

I like South Park better than Family Guy, ultimately because, South Park is always trying new things, and Family Guy never does.
Jiggz, Matt Groening did both Simpsons and Futurama. So... I guess American Dad just sucks. (I have no idea, I never watched it)

Hands down Futurama, for reasons given by Raxo and Shagg. Family Guy is retarded bathroom humor that requires no thought. South Park has gotten better since it shifted to political themes (the recent AIDS episode is my favorite), and the Simpsons, though the pioneer has just been running too long.
By the way, anyone know when the new Futurama episodes start? Tyler: American Dad is generally hit or miss. Very hilarious or just dumb and not worth it. I think it's on adult swim now.

My favourite thing about FG id Meg. It's the best idea for a character ever.
My favourite line- Peter says to Meg "Meg, who let you back in the house"
With the simpsons I find I can say "Hey remember that episode where Homer can't sleep and goes to Florida but it ends up it's during spring break." and everyone can spout off differant, hilarious things that happened in that episode.
With family guy it seems to be more like
"Remember that one time when something crazy happened out of no where."
"Oh yeah, what episode was that again."
"No idea."
Sure there are funny things that happen in family guy but they have shit all to do with the story that is actually going on in the episode. They go for the cheap laughs and for whatever reason get them.
Futurama is a differant kind of cartoon altogether and I can't explain why I love it so much but I do.
I'm going to have to go with the simpsons with futurama in a very close second.

From the "Favorite Shows" thread: South Park: It's terribly animated, has crude humor, is rude to everyone, and is fucking great. It's hilarious and its messages are spot-on. Matt and Trey's voice acting is funny and never gets old to me, and I wouldn't have the animation any other way. It just works perfectly for the show's style.
And my all-time favorite television series... (Drum Roll, Please)
The Simpsons (Seasons 1-9): What isn't there to love about this show during its golden years? The voice-acting, the animation, and especially the writing is all damn near perfect. It revolutionized cartoons as we know them today and was pretty much the first cartoon made for adults.
I have to find something on TV that I find better than season 5 of The Simpsons.
As for Futurama: Yes, it's funny, but sometimes the jokes are way too predictable or cheesy. I'm very happy it's returning.
Family Guy: The first three seasons were pretty damn funny. After its return, however, it was a completely different show that I stopped watching quickly because of how unfunny I found it had become. I'd say it's because the writers got way too lazy and are trying to appeal to the adult swim audience that helped them return. Whenever I say I don't care for it, someone will pipe up and say, "Why not? It's funny because it's so random!" and I'll have to tell them that's why I don't find it funny. A monkey with down syndrome could type something random. But I'm not saying I'm upper class or anything. Chase week was hilarious to me. I can see why people like it, like when we all just want to shut off their brain and laugh, (hey, I really liked "Beerfest" for crying out loud) but even when I want to watch something dumb, Family Guy isn't where I turn to. That's not to say that there aren't a few good new episodes ( I liked "PTV", for example).

Family Guy would be allright if it didn't come out with some stupid shit about some celebrity I've never heard of every 2 minutes.
South Park also has this problem, except it's for 6-year-olds and seems to be obsessed with relating all it's episodes to random pop-culture references to show how HIP WITH THE TIMES it is. This doesn't belong on the list if you ask me.
Futurama actually doesn't have enough episodes. I don't watch it alot, I've not even got Sky One anymore, but I've seen every episode way too many times.
Simpsons wins DEFINATELY. I was watching the episode where Principal Skinner's from the army, I'd forgot all the jokes and it was just fuckin great.

Not necessarily all the time. About a week ago they had an episode about Britney Spears, and I suspected they were going to jump on the bandwagon and rip on her, so I wasn't looking forward to it. But they did a complete 180 and were making fun of the media for being such hogs, constantly trying to find flaws with her at every opportunity they could and plummeting her into depression. Basically a South Park rendition of "Leave Britney Alone." So it's not always vying to be "hip with the times."
When I re-watch some old South Park episodes they seem to have lost most their humor because a lot is based on "what's hot" or relevant at the time.
To me the Simpsons and Futurama rely less on that and always keep there humor even the episodes from years ago still make me laugh.
Also South Park and Family Guy seem to be more obnoxious and rude with no jokes at times.

Family guy owns guys, it is usually quite original but has copied (carbon almost) of the simpsons.
South Park and Futurama come in second because of their totally original story lines.
Simpsons has WAY too many songs in it, there was even that one entire musical episode that put me to sleep at 5pm.
Why isn't spongebob squarepants here? that has got to be the ultimate show of all time, no matter how many times you have seen it, it doesn't get old (I sometimes even talk along to the show)

I love the Simpsons the most, followed closely by Futurama. Family Guy is amusing to watch, but sometimes it just gets on my nerves. They are, a lot of the jokes are sexist to the women, and gay's. Simpsons honestly lost me when they started the re-runs. Futurama is great, but is never on in NZ anymore, so I didn't vote for that. South park is too late at night and just plain old disturbing.

South Park hands down. It is hilarious, original and even has a message in each episode (Or at least the newer ones)
Family Guy is borderline retarded. Wait no, its manatee retarded. When I tell my friends I don't like it they all go "Oh but Pieman, its so random, just like you," after which I backhand them and when they try to regain there footing I come back in with bitch slap. Random Family Guy is not. It is fucking stupidity masquerading as edgy madness. Then the fucking stupidity comes back every 10 minutes.
"Oh wow he fell over and is now holding his knee!"
Spongebob-esque 10 minutes later
"And he's still doing it! THATS FUCKING HILARIOUS!@!!#1"
Repeat that 100 times, twice movie length and you have Family Guy.
Futurama is one of the best shows ever. Its hilarious with great characters. Infact it would be my number 1 pick if not for the lack of episodes.
Simpsons was a big part of my childhood, and it was hilarious the entire time. Then it slowly got unfunnier after time went by. It still has some funny moments, but not as many as it used to.

The only reason it would seem like The Simpsons is copying anyone is because they've already done everything, then Family Guy has gone and ripped them off, then The Simpsons have done it again. There are several episodes that the basic premise Family Guy has stolen directly from the Simpsons.

I demand evidence.
Episode where a casino is built in Springfield and marge develops a gambling problem=Episode where the family go to an indian casino and lois develops a gambling problem.
This further illustrates my point. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MkbMBFODxc
I chose Futurama because Family Guy and The Simpsons were good, now they try to be more edgy and controversial. However by doing so they go way past the line in some sketches and often cram too much into one episode.
Futurama brought something else to the table. Fresh, funny ideas and not trying so hard to be another notorious cartoon.
Never really watched South Park. Just wasn't my thing.

1st. Family guy is awesome, I voted for them, there so unpredictable with many of there clips.
2nd. Simpsons is also good, it has its funny scenes and its the longest running animation Ever.
3rd. South Park also has its funny scenes, but the fact that most of there joeks are either sexiest or racial spoils the comedy.
4th. Futurama has its funny scenes, but its the least popular and really boring at times.

Family guy is ok but is a little too retarted sometimes. It reuses jokes to much. Futurama is good to but I don't watch it enough to like like alot. South Park is God awful. Whaaaaaaaaaaaat?
American Dad is the kind of over patriotic American garbage that I can't stand. I know that's the point of the show, exaggerated patriotism that's supposed to be funny, but it just isn't.
The Simpsons is just fucking hilarious. There are about 10 thousand episodes but just about all of them are memorable.

south park, it is just way to funny, and i like the way they make fun of people, politics, and everything else. It's just way too funny.
For me its between Family Guy and the Simpsons. Futurama I never really got into, though in a way, I never gave it a fair shake. But, i will say, the episodes I did watch, they were actually okay and I enjoyed them.
South Park, I find funny, but I'm not slap-happy over it. I can live without it. While the Simpsons are funny, I never really had teh urge to watch it. It could be due to teh fact of when I wanted to actually watch an episode of it, I wasn't able to. Maybe I should buy the seasons one day.
But Family Guy, I find to be quite hillarious, mainly because I got all or most of the jokes which were in there. But I will say, when the newer seasons came out, they felt as is they were forced, like the jokes. The older episodes seemed to flow nicely, but the new ones it was just joke after joke after joke after joke. Maybe they got better with it, but when it first came back I was like, "eh?"
but, I guess my vote goes to Family Guy. Though, I wish there were more choices to vote on.

Family guy is trying too hard to be funny with it's repetitive "Yeah that was bad, you know like the time I ran into Richard Gere...." gets annoying fast.
The Simpsons didn't interest me much, although I've watched plenty of episodes and tried my best to like it.

South Park wins hands down. It's so funny and they get away with everything. For instance, the Britney Spears episode, anyone who has seen that will agree that the creators know how to get laughs. They're hilarious.
Family guy is good but sometimes it gets annoying when they re-do the same joke over and over, like the chicken fight was funny the first time but then it got boring. Same with Peter hurting his leg, but other than that it's great.

I prefer Futurama. It's always funny and often fairly intelligent. The Simpsons is good - and it pioneered the genre of cartoons for adults - but the quality has been going downhill recently. South Park is funny sometimes, but relies way too much on on obscenity for its humor. Family Guy is mindless, stupid stuff, though it does occasionally make me laugh.

Spongebob is just a bunch of lame jokes, it doesn't count as a real show.
Southpark wins! Followed closely by Family guy. Family guy is just a bunch of random flashback jokes, but it nice n funny most of the time.
There isn't a Southpark episode that isn't funny. There just aren't enough stereotypical characters in the other series. What other series has a Jew in it, and a token black kid, and the spoiled fat kid in it and all the rest.
The other series also have a distinct lack of "cat orgy" and more recently "cheezing" and stuff. but maybe that one's just because my group of friends has a running series of cat urine jokes, and just general cat jokes.
I do think they don't do the "Oh my God they killed Kenny" gag often enough anymore. But you know, we learned something today...

Irony and hypocrisy go hand in hand in this thread :indiff:
I get pissed off whenever people say Family Guy is better then Futurama and Simpsons. Usually its followed by some hypocritic and completely off topic reasoning, followed by a 'random' joke, used by Family Guy at least 10 times per season, to rally the agreement of other 'less then intelligent' people. Who of course, think that Family Guy is proof that exists.
Fugga, could you by chance tell us what the result of the poll you were basing yours off were? The polls over, besides the occasional idiot voting even when its obvious that its over.
Hats of!

Futurama, surreal and black humour.
Unlike the other series, Futurama has a plot, a story. It includes drama and less "look at me, I'm making fun of Paris Hilton"-homour. The characters are dynamic, other then flat and boring (I'm looking at you Marge, Kyle, Stan).

I went with South Park because Family guy is starting to repeat itself, and I was thinking about the Simpsons because they are always good. But not always great. Family guy is either good or really bad. Futurama is good but a little bit wacky. I like South Park because it's a good combination of a lot of shows.

I'm surprised at how close the votes are. I like South Park. I just watch is more often. I wish there was more Futurama to watch. I've only seen family guy a few times, so I don't really know. For me The Simpsons is just ok...

Cause it sucked and was basically Family Guy + a little bit of FBI.
American Dad is CIA, not FBI
I voted Futurama. Like many have said, it is different, and that's why I like it.

I just KNOW people are gonna be pissed at me for this...
Family Guy is funny at rare moments. Most of the time it's just random humor that isn't even funny. They even have some scenes that rag on to all eternity. It's like the writers got lazy and said "What if we made the scene drag on and then add sex humor into it so that millions of middle school kids will adore it." What a stupid show.
The simpsons is one of the best shows on television for so many reasons. For one thing, they have a zillion different writers and yet it seems like they all live on the same kind of laugh-out-loud humor. When the show's funny, it's hilarious, and when it's serious, it's heart-warming. Tons of great characters and great episodes, the simpsons beats family guy to a pulp. And yet still people go for the cheap humor they find in family guy...A shame...

South Park. It may cross the line a lot, but it always cracks me up. There's only been a couple of times where I haven't been happy/been disgusted with an episode, but it's still great. Like, I love the others too, but none of the episodes are memorable for me, whereas I remember a lot of SP episodes cos they were just so damned awesome.

Family Guy deffinatly.
I don't know, Hermes is rather boring.
The Simpsons > Futurama > South Park > Family Guy
The Simpsons hands down. Seasons 1 to 9 is the best television I have ever seen. Sure, it's all downhill from there but there still isn't an episode that I truly despise (although Kill the Alligator and Run comes incredibly close). I really can't see any other current animated series getting over 420 episodes, let alone have a run of 203 episodes that were consistently rather well done (yes, some aren't as good as others [A Star is Burns, for example] but they still get above a C grade from me).
Futurama is almost equal to The Simpsons in terms of quality; I prefer the humour of this show compared to modern-day Simpsons...but there are a lot of episodes, particularly in Seasons 2 and 3, that aren't very good (A Leela of Her Own, A Pharaoh To Remember, The Cryonic Woman, That's Lobstertainment! and I Dated A Robot immediately come to mind). Though the high points of the series are all excellent; A Flight To Remember, War is the H-Word, The Luck of the Fryrish, Jurrasic Bark, The Day the Earth Stood Stupid, The Devil's Hands are Idle Plaything (the best series finale I've ever seen)...
South Park is rather hit and miss. Many people prefer the earlier seasons, but I personally prefer Season 7 and onwards. Some of the episodes are really annoying (Goobacks), and others take things a bit too far (the whole giving the alien an unscary form scene in Cancelled). Like Futurama and The Simpsons, however, the high points are very high...Chinpokomon, Make Love Not Warcraft, Tsst, Woodland Critter Christmas (yes, I liked that one).
Family Guy isn't necessarily bad, in fact I liked a lot of Season 3 and parts of 4. But what annoys me about it is that most people can't give an absolute reason for liking it, they just say "because it's funny". I really don't like that excuse, personally. Yes, something can have a lot of humour but at the same time I'd like to see some well developed emotion and a cohesive plot. What turned me off eventually was a sudden influx of people at other message boards that said "The Simpsons is nothing but a copy of Family Guy". Considering The Simpsons premiered 12 years (including the Tracy Ullman shorts) before Family Guy, they're obviously wrong...
And with the American Dad thing, I prefer it a lot more than Family Guy, and it would come between Futurama and South Park on my list if it were included in the poll.
My $0.02.
They are making new episodes of futurama, where have you been living?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futurama .
They're not exactly new episodes, they're straight-to-DVD movies that will be broadcast as both a feature-length presentation on Comedy Central, as well then being chopped up into four parts and being re-aired as "episodes" which, by that time, the DVDs themselves will have already been out for a while (the first, Bender's Big Score, was released in November 2007 in the US, but didn't premiere on television until the Easter weekend this year).

Family guy is shit, and so is Futurama.
Futurama really depends on someone's sense of humour, and their familiarity with the genre of science fiction. Many plots and jokes are based around old sci-fi shows.

I agree, it depends on someone's sense of humor. Futurama seems to have comedy and jokes that are more subtle than the flashy "hey look at this" of Family Guy and Southpark. For me its a tie between Futurama and the Simpsons.

I picked Family guy because as stupid and as horribly written as it is, It always seems to make me laugh. The clips pretty much complete the show and you didn't need me to tell you that. Have you ever watched American dad? I'm sure you have once or twice and it just shows how unfunny family guy would be without the clips.
Futurama is a great show the first time you watch the episodes. I'd say the lack of episodes is because they've put as many ideas into as few episodes as possible if that makes sense.
Simpsons was a lot better back in the day when i was younger but still has its moments, but without it im sure the other 3 competitors would not be around.
Southpark is a totally different type of humour and probably the best written of all 4. My second favorite only to family guy, the reason is because it doesn't always deliver (or as much as family guy does) but i suppose thats based on my choice of humour.

The randomness of Family Guy is what makes me laugh the most. I love all the episodes. I've also been fond of The Simpsons, and South Park isn't that bad. SP is very crazy; I really liked that episode where Kennie goes to heaven with his psp though.
:banjo:
South Park obviously. I love seeing new episodes that I've never seen before because it's always so strange and hilarious it never disappoints. Next is Futurama, and that is a very close next because Futurama just kicks ass, even though it does get kind of old to see the same episodes over again.
Then it's between Simpsons and Family Guy, and I'd have to go Simpsons. Even though I loved the first three seasons of Family Guy more than any episode of the Simpsons ever, The Simpsons managed to keep their cool and, although they lack the quality and freshness of the original seasons, after 20+ seasons they still manage to be good. Family Guy only returned because of pressure from the fans, and while the 4th season was actually pretty good for the most part, everything after that turned from just o.k, to complete bullshit. All the characters sucked, all the jokes sucked, and except for a few good episodes here and there from seasons 5 and 6 on, it kind of just sucked. Also it spawned the gayest show ever: American Dad, and also contributed to another horrible spin-off, the Cleveland Show (Although to its defense, I haven't even watched it yet)

South Park used to be really funny, but lately it has gotten so overblown with political messages and stuff that it just really isn't that funny anymore. It seems its more in for the shock value now.
My favorite would be Family Guy since i appreciate the random, casual humor more.

I couldn't agree with you more I like watching all the shows, but I hate how family guy gets most of the attention even though the jokes just aren't really that funny, some of them are but things like the chicken fight and when peter falls on the floor holding his knee isn't really that funny at all.

Simpsons - Gets my vote simply because of the longevity of the show as well as its precedence in all the other shpws.
Futurama - Comes second because of it's subtle humor, and it's outrageous situations. (Kiegle-ciser, for instance)
South Park - The writers have lost their edge somewhat, with their messages in each episode becoming more and more obvious, leaving fewer things to figure out.
Family Guy - Although it has its episodes, still becomes stagnant due to its completely off plot jokes.
Why isn't Kind of The Hill on the list? It has some of the greatest humor I've ever seen. it's just very subtle and hard to catch.

I opened this thread and immediately voted Futurama because it's probably the most consistently funny show I've been watching lately, but reading this thread made me think a lot more about The Simpsons. For some reason, it's probably been about a year since I last watched the Simpsons, and reading some of the posts here have brought back fond memories. So it's probably a toss-up between the two for me. South Park is often extremely funny, but the writers try way too hard to be edgy and political. While some episodes are actually very creative satires, the shameless tasteless of the show tends to undermine its credibility. Plus there are many extremely uncomfortable moments (example: the scene in the episode where the Internet breaks down that features Randy masturbating for several minutes). Family Guy relies far too much on random humor and pop culture references, which makes for some hilarious moments the first time you watch an episode. But once you know what to expect, it's easy to see just how incredibly stupid the show is.

Futurama since Simpsons season 9 etc... Family Guy and South Park is hit or miss for me.
Yeah, Futurama was so original and crazy. Also, I'm a huge Sci-Fi fan, so that helped. Great plotline in Futurama. South Park and Family Guy don't really have much besides dirty jokes and the occasionally really absolutely hilarious episode. Simpsons - I'm surprised it's still funny after 10 years lol.
