View Full Version : Is that what you call a driving test?

I just took my driving test today and got my license (Woohoo!). But... somehow I don't feel like I was tested. In teaching us, the driver's ed school went over everything, but they barely touched on any of that when testing me. It seemed less of a maneuverability test and more of a "Can you turn the car on and move" test. This is how the 5 minute test went down:

Get in the car, they tell me to buckle in adjust everything and then show them hand signals. Not even using them while driving, just show that I know them. Woopie, easy pass there.

Then they tell me to back out and turn onto a nearly deserted road that runs in back of the RMV. I do so, with my directional and all, and they tell me to take a right at the stop sign. I stop there with my directional like a good little driver, and she tells me to hurry up and start moving. We were taught to stop for three seconds before checking? Nope! Just keep going.

So I do, then they tell me to take another right, and then a final right onto a road that leads back to that little deserted road. I have to stop on the side of that road, they tell me to park it as if I was downhill without a curb, and then tell me to back up. I park fine, then back up slowly (because I'm not great at backing up quickly) and three seconds and maybe 10 feet later they say it's good and tell me to go forward. They direct me back onto the road and back into the RMV, and tell me to park where we were. I park easily enough, not even in a spot but just in an open lot where the driver's ed cars are, and my tester hands me my permit and tells me to go inside.

So what wasn't practiced? Actual driving. No stop lights, hurried stop signs, no hand signal turning, no parking at all, no other rules of the road. I'm not complaining that it was easy, I wasn't that great at backing into a parking spot anyway even though I practiced a bunch. But coming out of it I realize that it's no wonder there's so many terrible drivers with their license considering this is what they're tested on.

So there's my rant. Anybody else think that the test I took shouldn't be a valid driving test?

I think if you used less words to tell your story I would care more and actually attempt to read it.

Hmm... Well, I don't even have my permit at 16

But I know what you mean. I'm excited and have been told before that it was fairly simple, but that means more buttholes on the road. I heard the test for a permit is harder than the liscense.

That, my man, is why this is the general forum and not spame. Hurry back there, I think two minute reads are far too advanced for you.

And yeah, I nearly failed the permit test (got the max wrong that I could still pass with) because it was tricky and asked a lot about exact dollar amount fines.

LOL at insulting my intelligence. I read all of the Harry Potter books. Nothing is to advanced for me.

I know exactly how you feel, i took driving lessons in preparation of getting my license, but when it came time to actually take the test i must have used about one percent of the information i learned. Wish i would have known how lenient the test was before i dished out two-hundred bucks on those lessons.

I agree that it does not really test if you can drive. It seems that when you are in the car (or at least when I took mine) you are inconveniencing the tester. I got points off when I took mine for slowing down to see past a truck that was stopped in the road instead of speeding past it and getting hit by an oncoming car.

They should increase the difficulty to actually test you on and make sure you are actually prepared to drive, but it will never happen.

I think it would be cool if they made a car simulator, almost like a virtual reality test where they can test you in a way that if you mess up no real risk is taken, no cars lost and no lives lost. But anyways, I'm only 14, but my older sister complained about how easy her test was and she thought that they were going to get harder or something, and from all the things she told me, I agree with you lollercaust

Go to Denmark or Spain and take your license there, they're the hardest in the world.

Our teacher generally went easy on you if he liked you. Which was usually if you were hispanic.

Hence many of the bad hispanic drivers that left the place where I took the course.

But I think I'm one of the good ones. ;D

My friend during his drivers ed ( what ever they call that when you drive for 2 hours) backed up into a sign causing the bumper to fall off. He still passed somehow

I failed my test because the lady was mad that I had the test at 8AM. She didn't even fucking write down what I did wrong. Whore.

My test was a little harder. I actually had to turn left and right at both lights and stop signs, change lanes, and back up around a corner (as if I were backing into a driveway from the road). I think I got points off for not looking both ways before I crossed some railroad tracks, but, meh.

Sorry to tell you this but the harsh reality is that you're likely to be one of the terrible drivers of today. You obviously know there's a ton of shit you weren't tested on. Let's just pray that you're smart enough to figure some things out on your own without being dragged out of a mangled car wreck.

My test was pretty much a joke. My instructor only had me go down a couple of roads. I had to stop at a couple of stop signs and I had to parallel park which he helped me on.

I girl in my school failed the drivers test, TWICE. Finally she got it a third time. Within two weeks of getting her license she got a parking ticket and a car crash. She got into another car crash shortly after that.

There's an example of someone who just should never have been allowed a license.

I knew a girl who failed her permit test 6 times. When I first went for mine I saw her in there and asked her how many times she had been there all ready. She told me "Five." That day was her sixth. I was surprised to find out she didn't kill herself right there in the DMV.

Advanced? It looks like 12yearold mish-mash. WHERE ARE THE PARAGRAPHS.

Anyway, yeah, driving tests are a joke. Everyone knows this, it's a fact of life. Be lucky that it wasn't a real one, I doubt you'd pass.

Americans like their tests easy.

My mom failed 11 times... That is if you count the theory part too. Tough tests in Finland :P

I recently was tested also.
And it was a very pathetic test.
My 8 year old sister could have got her liscence.
The extremely sad thing, I was driving on a Rural Highway, About a 20 minute drive.
My instructor Fell asleep.
I was frustrated for a while so when i got to our destination I honked the horn On "Accident"

I am going to try for my learners soon and I want to know how hard it is. Because my friend took it and she failed, (by one question) even if she isn't the brightest bulb in the box, if you know what I mean. I live in Alberta, Canada.

Also, I seriously hope my license test is that easy.

The key to passing the test isn't on your skill. It's how much your tester likes you and if they are happy that day. /Truth.

The tab key doesn't work on forums. :wail: And I didn't want to indent with spaces. So I hoped the enter key would do it.

And I probably am a bad driver at the moment, considering it's only been 6 months since I've actually started getting behind the wheel. But I've seen far too many adults that probably only passed because their test was like this.

You should skip lines for paragraphs, like you just did. My driving test wasn't that stupid, we went on the busiest street (also a highway going through town) and some difficultish other areas. What's interesting though is the tester's conclusion on the paper that said I passed: "Not a safe driver". But that's not important, apparently. She was full of crap with my not being safe anyway. Seeing how most people drive tells me it's not a big enough issue to make more people safe and courteous.

Oh man, it would suck so hard if you only looked one way before getting creamed halfway across the tracks.

I'm not really bothering with a license. I can bike wherever I really need to be, or take a bus.

I failed twice before passing. Large suburban city with INSANE traffic, narrow roads and blind pedestrians = much greater chance for failing. What are the odds of running into not one, but TWO emergency vehicles during a 15 minute test?

BTW: Been driving for over three years. :)

My test was way more in depth than that. The test itself was 35 minutes long and consisted of everything you said you didn't have to do. I'm not complaining, since I passed my first time and my tester wasn't a douche bag, but it just seems weird that I had to do all that and you didn't.

Just got my liscence, and it was a total joke. Drove through a few intersections, pulled over to a curb, backed up, drove through a residential area or two, and then back to the DMV to get my liscence. Piece of cake.

It's alot different in Australia

First we have to do a theory test, then we get our Learner Permit, we're not allowed to go faster than 80km/h and have to do 50 Hours of supervised driving. Then we have to do a test with a driving instructor to get our Red Provisional Licence (P1) Where we can't go faster than 90km/h. You have to be on that for a year, then you do a computer reaction time test. If you pass that you get your Green Provisional Licence (P2) Where you can't go over 100km/h. Keep that for 2 years and then you qualify for a full licence.

Ha! Not me.

I passed my probationery licence in december last year, so I skip this 'Green P' rubbish. However the test was about 30 minutes long and was fairly comprehensive, not as easy as the American test that have been posted about.

Also, it's 120 hours of supervised driving (in Victoria), but I'd only done like 15...

Also I passed in a manual car and not an auto!

In QLD its recently been increased to 100 hours and one year on learners, then another year on P1, then another year on P2.

Well, you can pretty much do anything with a parent/legal guardian even under the age of 18 (in Aus)

How does this relate to driving test, watch this for a segway:

You can even drive at any age, assuming you are with a parent/guardian and you do not leave your parent/guardian's property.

My driver's test was actually a little bit complicated but nothing too bad. Considering I pulled up in my dad's beamer the lady seemed more fascinated in the car than with my driving so it was kind of a joke I guess. One of my friends failed it 5 times though and passed on his 6th. That's just because we have lots of 'instant' fails here such as going up on a curb, speeding over 5km/h over, hitting old ladies or dogs, etc.
