Hey! I'm starting a forum for anyone who likes to mess around with photoshop. Just like the comic's forum, post your work and critique other pieces.
RULES:
-The normal rules for all explosm forums: No AOLisms, put NSFW tags, etc.
-Please have actually edited the photo you are showing, it should be your own piece that's shown on here. Retouches are allowed only if it's a significant difference, it is also encouraged that you show a before and after photo.
-Post meaningful criticism, not just "that sucks"

Guerilla, that is VERY cool... I am so envious, I wish my laptop had enough RAM to run programs like photoshop! :(

SOAD ive actually never seen that tutorial, i just was messing with the curves balance on the iris, then i had done another piece where i overlayed a caked mud picuterof the iris and messed with curves to make it green. It looked scaley then i decided to just mix the two, but put the caked mud on the outside of the eye. Power, those are quite amazing, you have a very artistic eye, my friend. Here's another, I hope you like it!

Nice Matterialize! How did you do that, overlay layers of clouds and lightning with different color patterns?
Matterialize
04-04-2008, 11:52 PM
Kind of, it's just a filter trick. Clouds, invert, difference clouds, invert, level, spherize 100%, spherize 100%, change the hue and saturation. Make another layer and do it again, but set the blend mode to screen on this one. Do it two or three more times, with every layer set to screen except the first one. After that, merge 'em all and add an inner and outer glow.

This isn't a forum, it's a thread. It's a good idea though.
Anyway, nice art. Matterialize, I like the nebula thing. Power, some nice art too.

Had to do it for a school assignment. I actually did a tweaked, better version, but its still on the school network! :wail:

By chance were there any drugs involved in said assignment? Nice though, colourful.
I often just messed around with Photoshop, nothing big, just followed a bunch of tutorials and occasionally messed around with my own stuff. Generally ended up making forum sigs, but I'll post some of the stuff I did prior to those.
Basic tutorial stuff:
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/8314/meanthingyvt6.th.jpg (http://img141.imageshack.us/my.php?image=meanthingyvt6.jpg)
A few for a mates band:

http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/969/logo1fp5.th.jpg (http://img175.imageshack.us/my.php?image=logo1fp5.jpg)
I'm not entirely sure where most of my work has gone, I probably lost it during laptop changeover, it's a shame because the stuff I posted is shit compared to some of the other stuff I ended up making
Thanks for all the comments...
I'll add later some pictures on which I worked more than 2 days :)

I used to make fancy stuff all the time with Photoshop, but now I just use it to make funny stof or simple sigs, and mostly make logos in Illustrator now.
This is something I made from an outlined sketch of something I drew on a beer card (don't find the original):
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e350/de_nick/FlamingSkullv4-1.png
Another skull:

Here's a photomanip I did a couple years ago from my ex-girlfriend:
Manip (http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e350/de_nick/chelle.jpg)
Original (http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e350/de_nick/ikk-1-1.jpg)
The background was just something of a tropical resort, don't have it anymore
Two of the shitload of fancy sigs I made years ago:

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e350/de_nick/halo-1.jpg
I made alot more stuff but meh
Guerilla45724, that eye pic is not so good
Also to the people that post photomanips, try to post the original pic aswel so we have an idea of what you changed

Exactly how the rules say right? i like the master chief photo, but im partial to the skull ones. I like the art but im mostly just lookign at hptop manipulation not drawrings, even though the first was very well drawn.

Thank you adioslave :) It's actually a very simple technique, just desaturate a good photo, find a nice stone texture, and then you can put it on and set the layer to mulityply, erase where you want, and it looks great! I took out the eyes though, and I also created a white to black radial gradient around her face. then set it to linear burn and changed the opacity to help make the lighting more effective.

A piece i threw together in about 20 minutes, how do you like it? ((top is the original))
Taerran
04-05-2008, 8:34 PM
My piece has quite a few layers, and is a mixed blending of cracked textures, pictures of animal's intestines, gore, etc, and his left eye, which I just used the patch tool to move over.
Matterialize

It's alright but the blood really looks like it was just photoshopped on. It's not a very convincing manipulation.
Taerren, yours is awesome. :0

04-05-2008, 8:39 PM
Thanks. Guerilla, try not to use brushes, if you can help it. They're generally too easy to tell that they're fake. Also, it looks overbrushed and too uniform. You pretty much made an even triangle with a bit on the eye.
Heres one more, for shits and giggles.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/Staerfeldt/Art%20Show/Flybycopy.png
This one I made myself. No stock photos.
Guerrilla705
04-05-2008, 9:12 PM
I relize the blood effects were poorly done, but like I said, I only had 20 minutes ;). Taerren i liked the first one better, the planet appears far too transparent to me, it almost looks like i can see the ring behind it, but it's still very good
Matterialize
04-05-2008, 9:32 PM
I'm a hypocrite for saying this, but the atmospheres on those planets should be a little thinner. The comet thing seems a bit cheesy too, a big ol' ball of fire curving through space. Finally, the one planet's ring is off a bit - even though it's supposed to appear way wider on the outer curves, like you made it, the closer part of the ring should also be wider because it's nearer to you. The ring curving around the far side of the planet looks like the same width as the part that's passing in front of the planet.
Taerran
04-05-2008, 9:41 PM
I don't see how it makes you a hypocrite, I appriciate the constructive criticism. The only reason I made the atmosphere so thick, is because I figured it'd give the essence of light reflection also. Although now that you point it out, I see it should be a bit thinner. Also, good point on the ring.
Matterialize
04-05-2008, 10:24 PM
Hypocrite because I made the same mistake with the atmosphere on my planet up there. ^
Guerrilla705
04-06-2008, 1:14 PM
I have to agree with matterialize, the comet/meteor is overdoing it, it just makes the picture feel too cluttered. Here's my latest, im still toying around with desaturating and face modeling

Here's a piece I did very recently, I took inspritation and places for stock photos from a tutorial, however i DID NOT follow the tutorial. I read through it, took some ideas, went to the place the creator got the planet from to use that stock photo, and that's it. The planet is the only stock photo used.

what's with the coordinates and the "West Andromeda" display in the corner, then? Seems a bit videogame-ish to me.
Wow, some awesome stuff!
I'm just starting with photoshop. I guess I'll have to do some tutorials myself and learn some shit. About all I have done in photoshop are simple web graphics, buttons etc.
Guerrilla705
04-16-2008, 2:13 PM
Dresden, I just added that for the "satellite photo"-ish effect. I assure you it's not from a video game ;)
Pud, you don't really have to do the tutorials, just watch some YouTube ones for cool little effects and things that people use in their videos. Tutorials are helpful, however, if you don't know what a tool does. Otherwise, just practice a lot! :D
Well... Pretty much the first thing ive ever done.

Okay here's some constructive criticism because I'm nice. The orange is unflattering on her. It's way too busy; there are spiral things and lines and words and a window or something and it's just too much to take in. It looks like you had fun putting all these images together but they don't go well. Maybe use one or two simple overlays, not 8 busy ones.
Also, Ashlee Simpson sucks.

The artistic vision you had is good, and the artistic value of the picture is good, but the actual photoshop element isn't that impressive. It's more like you used photoshop as an art medium, which is still unique and I like it in that respect :)

Most of you guys are just throwing shitty filters onto mediocre art. I don't think we have a big enough Photoshop community to warrant this kind of thread.
Maybe if you guys would actually critique it'd be worthwhile.
