View Full Version : How technologically retarded are your parents?

Seriously, my Mum is a complete retard when it comes to computers. I had to teach her how to open an application, and copy and paste yesterday.
Two weeks ago, my girlfriend had to teach her Mum how to use the mouse. :indiff:
So, how about you?

My dad takes about an hour to send a 4 word text message.
My mum is quite clued up where texting and MSN are concerned, however I did have to show her about 5 times how to link the camera to the computer to transfer photos, when it just involved clicking one button :indiff:

It seems my parents are technological geniuses compared to these posted.
One currently works with server architecture and the other used to be a scientific programmer.
So, nope.

My mom has downloaded more files from p2p than I.
Anyways this thread made me think if in like 50 years when we'll get old, our kids would talk the same about us on the future internet or something.
Both of my parents are techno-savy. They need a new desktop because their hard drive is more corrupt than a city official but whatever.
My mother can barely tell a mouse from a keyboard.
Not really, ironically. My dad actually minored in computer electronics (or some area like that), so he is actually more technologically knowledgable than me (in some aspects). Though I did have to show my mom how to copy and paste a link into an e-mail.
What really flabergasts me however is how technologically retarded my substitute teachers are. Usually whenever we have one we just watch some movie, but these people don't know shit. They can't even turn on the DVD player, and if they manage to do that they can't even fast forward it/rewind it. It's like, haven't these people used technology before? Is a DVD player really that new to them?

My parents can do some things like texting, however they have no idea about MSN or these forum things. My mum believes anyone that you cannot see is a paedophile. Both my parents do play on the Wii, but their knowledge is limited to the 'big button' and 'the other button'

My mom started yelling at me because I used the default "linksys" wireless network when our main network down. She believed (and still does) that it's a neighbor's network and that we're using their internet when we connect to it.
Other than that my mom isn't too bad.
My dad though can't install anything, mostly due to the fact that he hardly knows any English.

My mom isn't too bad, but my dad can't even program the time on our stereo. I thought it came from growing up on a farm but everyone else seems to have techno-illiterate parents as well, so maybe not.

Well, they take some time to learn but once they learn they're pretty ace. My dad used to be a Civilization & Yahoo games addict, and he currently mods a forum on cars, so he is very well off when it comes to games and the internet. He's just frustrated when stuff like cameras take a long time to figure out. He'd learned how to transfer music to iPod but I'm pretty sure he forgot it by now. He just has a short temper so I don't feel like teaching him anything. Then he gets even more mad but that's another story. :indiff:
My mom on the other hand uses AIM, MSN and Skype (including video & audio chatting) to talk to me and my cousins. She can also upload and send photos from her camera and successfully search and browse the internet.
Their text messages are still usually limited to minimal phrases such as "okay" "have fun" and "good night" though.

My mom can't work technology. I've told her countless times what to do when the internet stops working, but she always just makes me do it because she doesn't know how. As for my dad, he's better than me with computers in some ways. He works in IT.

Both my parents have severe technological issues. I wrote my mom a step by step guide on how to download music from limewire, yet for some reason I always have to do it for her. Somehow though, my mom has picked up some internet slang, she actually left me a note once in which she used "lol". I died a little inside that day.

My ma has trouble using the television remote control.
That said, she's actually pretty good with computers. She got on the whole wave when they were new, so she's kept up reasonably well with the new technologies. However, in some aspects she's pretty resistant to change, such as her insistence on using Word '98, Microsoft Office '98, and the old Netscape.

My Father has disallowed me from using his computer when my old computer broke down because I installed Winrar on it. He thinks that deep inside anything that I download is bugged with a virus that is set out to kill his shitty computer. I guess it'd be doing him a favor because his computer can barely handle Firefox.
My dad is actually pretty good. However, I once had to show my mom how to log onto her e-mail. :ahe: And we have to show her how to use the DVR all the time.

Oh, and my mom uses Pine for her email. For those of you who don't know, Pine is, like, a super-old email program from the beginning of personal computers. It consists of white test on a black background (but you can change the colors). I use it too (but also copy-forward to my Gmail account), because it's awesome as fuck.
Here's a picture of the latest version of Pine, circa '06. Note that my mother uses the original version, although it hasn't changed much:

04-02-2008, 9:21 PM
I love my mother, I do, but she is, uh... she's not exactly with technology. Example?
When I was younger, like around the age of 12, she called me up when I was at a friend's house wanting to know how to turn on the TV in the living room. Yes, that's right. It's been at least 8 years since then, and even now, she can't work the TV and VCR that are in her room (she has successfully mastered the one in the living room).
She has issues with the answering machine, too.
My mom's actually not to bad considering she's 50. I taught her in two minutes how to text.
She doesn't get Facebook or nexopia though. And she doesn't understand anything about files. She can use Word, and the internet a bit, her skills end there.

My sister sends text messages to my mom, then she'll come home and say "Josh, my phone has been beeping all day and it says I have a new message, but I keep checking my voicemail and there's nothing and I can't figure out how to turn it off."
Despite the fact that universal remotes are supposed to make things easier, they're actually extremely difficult for my entire family to use. Even though the instructions are right. there. on. the. remote. screen.
My mom has tried to ask what MSN and Facebook are and we've all decided not to bother explaining. Adults don't have an appreciation for the ways in which we waste our time.
There are probably a ton of others, but I just tune them out and none of them are memorable because they seem so basic to me.

My parents think MSN is a verb. :indiff:
My mother tries to control the DVD player with the digital cable remote that's not set up to be universal. She doesn't understand why it doesn't work. That's about it though. She's pretty decent with everything else.

My dad is piss useless with computers. We got a new PC once and it took him a month before he could get to the Windows boot screen without my help. My mum on the other hand, has been using computers since you had to type in binary, so she doesn't need much help with them.

My best mate's mum actually is on MySpace, and isn't too bad with a computer.

My dad has some kind of computer degree and can probably program the vcr to record every time someone opens up msn on the computer, he's just THAT clever.
Otherwise, my mum probably doesn't even know how to start a computer.
My dad's in IT. He teaches me how to use computers and the internet.
My mother however, struggles to understand how MP3's go on CD's, and how to make it so her digital camera flashes when she takes pictures.

Not that bad really, both of them are fine with computers, my Dad is ok with mobiles, cameras, and other everyday stuff. My mom is crap with mobile phones though, she can't text, good thing her phone is an old brick and has no features or she'd be even more confused. No one in my family gets games though, my mom calls my PSP, "handheld games thing" and my Dad still only knows how to play the Sega Megadrive. I played my sister at Mario Kart once, she gave up after 20 minutes, apparently the controls were too hard.
My dad is pretty good with computers. Sometimes he'll end up with 15 firefox windows open though because he insists on opening everything in a new window instead of using tabs.
My mom is good with the programs she uses for her business, but anything else I have to explain to her.

many parents never had the chance to use a computer, that's why their lack of knowledge and they also find it difficult to learn. In many years your children will be saying the same things about us.
anyways my parents know nothing about computers they're around their 60's so I don't blame them, if they need to do something on the comp. I try to help them or I do it for them.
My Mom is pretty good with the computer, and has a job where she is on the computer inputting information all day long. She's good with her cell phone, and frequently text messages, although she types like a 12 year old and misspells things on purpose to be 'cool'. She makes me laugh.
My Dad, ehh, not so much. I mean, he knows how to go on the internet, but he sticks to the same websites and pretty much just listens to music or plays poker. When it comes to typing, he's pretty slow, so most of the time if i'm home he'll ask me to type for him. My Mom just taught him how to text message. He's getting the hang of it.
Both of them come to me if they have a question about technology. I guess because I spend a good portion of the day online. :indiff:

Really? I've just started using the Word 2k7 a month ago and I must say that it's the simplest Word so far, although it still does some weird things I don't want it to do, like when I delete a text somewhere it screws up the whole file by moving everything else.

Yeah, it on the family computers at both my parent's houses (Dad installed it). I hate it how I can't find ANYTHING. The school computers have the classic easy to use versions so that's okay. But it took me hours to find where the hell I had to click to insert a page break because there aren't anymore drop down menus.
I must admit I like how if you want to change the font, you highlight the text and when you roll your mouse over one of the options and you can preview it.

My mom is over protective when it comes to me using the internet. She uses parental controls. She blocks the most of the bad stuff like a parent should, and almost all of the good stuff. Sometimes Google is blocked and sometimes it isn't. Sometimes Nickalodeon.com (kid website) is blocked. My mom is mentally ill with the internet and it's content.

Yeah everyone knows that Nintendos are a million times better than PSPs so everytime they make the mistake they're just reminding you of how they failed you as parents by buying you such a shitty machine, am I right?
I thought my dad was good with computers till he came to 'help' me deal with a virus. I was going through the programs on my hard drive and in the middle of asking me why I was so technologically inept as to allow my computer to be infected (A computer I hade left at home when I went to uni, since I have two), he pointed at firefox and said he didn't recognise that program and maybe that was the virus.

My old lady is the absolute worst when it comes to e-mails. I gotta watch her because she has a tendency to immediately click on the spam messages containing viruses or phishing programs.
My mom is kind of savvy she can email and write word and excel documents and such because we own a supermarket and she right up the letters and all of that stuff but she frequently calls me and asks me why something isn't working but I guess I can't blame her I have noscript and that other addon that downloads pdfs so firefox doesn't crash when you open it. My dad is a little more savvy than my mom, he can helped me "fix" the wireless once when I recorded the wrong mac address, I had to tell him where to find it but he still knows a good deal. When it comes to cellphones my dad is more savvy than my mom. My mom can put in contacts but sometimes I have to help her. My dad has no problem with any of that but it's not like they are on blackberries but he could probably figure most of it out. hey my mum tryed to turn on the computer but only managed to continually press the restart button over and over until i came and turned it on. but after about ten minutes she called for help again to try and fig out how to take the red squily line beneath a word she had put in.

Actually neither of my parents are too bad with technology. My dad can download things off the internet through P2P/torrents, uses firefox, and can run/update antispy. my whole family is n00b. I have had to reformat the family pc approximately 20 times (no exaggeration...) because of the amount of junk they install. Seriously last time I did it opening the start menu took about 30 seconds, and it took up more than the entire 1024x768 screen I have a screenshot somewhere of it. To back it up I had to take the harddrive out and plug it into another computer because everything took so long. its not so much the technological retardation its more the believing everything on the internet like "you need realplayer to see this..." or "your computer could be at risk. Click here to fix it".

My parents aren't that bad. My dad has learned to do the following:
-ignore mass, chain, and spam e-mails
-realize that AOL isn't really that good after all
-use wireless internet
-check e-mail on his crackberry
-text and picture message(This was a huge milestone. He no longer hassles his kids with long voicemails...just a simple text saying "How's it going?")
Things my dad needs to learn to do:
-Use anti-virus/anti-spam software
-Use Windows Update
-Ditch AOL
My mother has learned to:
-Sign on to AOL
-Check her e-mail on AOL
-IM
-Use facebook
-Use google
Things she needs to learn to do:
-Text message
-Ignore spam/chain/mass e-mails
-Learn what a site you can trust and not trust looks like when you're shopping online
-Run anti-virus/anti-spam software
So...things aren't really that bad for my parents. They know some stuff, but they're by no means tech savvy.

My mom is actually pretty decent. She uses Paint Shop Pro, has her own blog and know the basic stuff. She hasn't figured out how to use Facebook though, which I guess isn't really a bad thing. My dad is also ok. He mostly uses the PC to make CD's and check the news. He also needs about half an hour to write three sentences.

My mom knows enough about computers, but sometimes she forgets to check if the printer's connected, but then she did change her email because she didn't understand how to turn on the spam filter. My dad is basically Fred Flintstone when it comes to technology. He just got a cell phone a year ago and doesn't know how to turn off the speaker option. He calls me all the time to ask how to check his email.

My dad is pretty tech-savvy. He figured everything out on his own, knows how to do all the important stuff, but is by no means a computer genius. He takes about a half hour to type three sentences because he uses one hand and one finger on that hand, though. o-o He's good with everything else too, like setting up VCR/DVD players.
My mother is pretty tech-retarded. She only ever uses the computer to do her taxes, and nothing else. I had to teach her how to open the internet.
Everything else she lets other people do for her. She does use the computers at her work for basic stuff, but nothing else.
I've never even seen her play a VCR or DVD before. o-o;

My mom didn't realize the printer needed to be plugged in for her to print something. In all fairness, you'd think somebody would have invented a wireless printer by now.
The printer needs to be plugged into something for a power source, EVEN IF it was wireless. Unless it ran on a battery which I think would be a waste.
My Dad knows how to use a computer, he has learned, he doesn't know much English though so he gets confused really fast with computers. My mom just learned how to use the mouse, and she types at liek 15 WPM because she uses 2 fingers to type. What really freaks her out is when she click a link in FireFox and it opens a new tab, and she tried to go back but it doesn't work because it's a different tab. When I told her it opened a new tab it took about 5 mins for it to get to her. Now she freaks out when it doesn't open a tab and you have to click "Back."

My great aunt and great uncle are pretty cool though, taught them how to use a laptop we got them for Christmas a few years ago and then on that taught them how to use Skype so he could talk to his sister is the Netherlands because he hadn't seen her in 12 years. My father has trouble reading his own e-mail. He bought a new Tv last month and he's having difficulties with putting the Tv from normal to digital.
My father also can't tekst-message with his mobile phone, he has to use a pen, because his fingers are too thick.

Mine aren't too bad, although my mum still, after years of telling her, thinks that the 'esc' key will close a program. She's uses a computer everyday at work, yet still doesn't learn :wail:
My dad's pretty good, although i don't think he's quite grasped how big the hard-drive on his laptop is; I ripped a CD to it to load onto my Ipod, and straight after i had finished he deleted the tracks. I've also had to point out to him recently that the reason he couldn't connect to his new wireless internet on one of those Vodafone sticks was because the old connection was still enabled.
I suppose this stuff is nothing compared to some of the things I've read on here

My dad is much much much worse, he can play pinball on the computer, and that's IT (He has all the high scores and they are all 5,000,000 +)
i taught him how to use the Internet about 5 times, he still can't open the window he also doesn't know how to double click, he does it too slow. He cant type, but has no reason to.
His phone skills are just as bad, he refuses to lock his keys and keeps on pocket calling me, and the numbers 7, 77777, 777* and so on. When I lock the keys for him, he wont use the phone all day and think its broken. i showed him how to unlock it like 7 times. and texting is just waaay out there.

Haha, this reminds me of a C&H comic. Where a guy typed in porn on google, and clicked the "I'm feeling lucky" button, but before it was made to seem like he was doing something better.. Anyways..
One time my friend jesse was over, and I was on my laptop and he was getting bored with TV, so he asked if he could use my computer. I told him to go in my moms room because she wasn't there. He did, and started using the internet. He clicked on internet explorer and used f11, for fullscreen. After me, him, and like 4 other guys went outside to walk around town, doing graffiti, climbing buildings, talking to people, etc. Well my mom calls my phone screaming, "WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO MY COMPUTER!!!!". I said mom what are you talking about. She said "THERE IS NO START BUTTON THINGY WHEN I PUT ON INTERNET EXPLORE!!!".
And I said "... Mom... It's only on f11"
So she goes, "Well I'm not touching it till you get home, I don't know anything about this fancy computer slang 'f11' "
So after like 5 hours I get home click f11 once, and she goes, "How did you do that?"

my dads ok, he's been in BT for about 30+ years, he started as an engineer but then got promoted to a desk job, there he learned lots about computers, some of the hardware stuffs quite outdated like he went to overclock his computer at home and he was baffeled when "the little lever" was gone becaus thats aparantly the way they did it at this work, he's pretty literate in all respects, forums, torrents, hard ware internet etc, though he's made the odd mistake like the rest of us, like when we spent 4 hours at his computer wondering why it woudlnt boot up, i was confused as well then i made the suggestion since i thought it was to stupid a mistake
"are you sure the drives plugged in"
"dont be fucking stupid malcolm i know what i'm doing"

my mum and grandparents know how to use a computer for what they need it to, which is e-mails, solitare, web browseing, and formy mother, ebaying
my aunt on the other hand
in 2003-4 before my uncle died they got a random family desktop, my cousin would use it for her sims, the rest would be random web browsing and instant messaging, they needed a new computer since their commodore had kicked the bucket, anyways my dad was at home and i was at their house setting up msn for my uncle and we set the webcams and mics and my dad just left our computer on and headed round since he was brining us chinease, anyway later that night i was on our computer and the convo window was left open and my aunts webcam and mike was streaming so i just said hey,
this resultied in

my uncle knew what was going on and didnt tell her because, well it was hilarious, for teh next 10 minutes i pretended to be her computer leaving cryptic messages before threatoning to self destruct which she belived, unfortunately my cousin pointed out to her what happened and that was the end of that, thats abot the worst case of tech retardation,
another more funny thng that happened with my dad which was probably coincidence, was when i was formatting my system due to a graphics card issue i was determied to fix and he walked in my room with a screw drver offering help, which resulted in both my DVD drives failing,

I have no idea how my dad is with technology as I live with my mother only. She is generally quite bad using Microsoft Office. I had to show her about 5 times in 5 minutes how to open a file. I have no idea how it can be that hard. The difference between Save and Save As.. is a major source of confusion too.
Oh, and,
her: "Why isn't the printer working?"
me: "Is it plugged in?"
her: "I don't know, it should be."
me: "Here's the problem. The computer end of the USB cable is sitting right next to you."
her: "Well, where's it meant to go?"
at this point, i'm thinking, i've shown you HOW MANY TIMES?
But in all fairness, she used to work punchcard computers before she took time off to be a mother so there is a technology large gap there.
Oh! Don't even mention the TV/VCR/DVD/PayTV remotes.
Both my parents have severe technological issues. I wrote my mom a step by step guide on how to download music from limewire, yet for some reason I always have to do it for her. Somehow though, my mom has picked up some internet slang, she actually left me a note once in which she used "lol". I died a little inside that day.
I share your pain. Through out my childhood my mother always stressed using correct English and being proper spoken, and since she got a mobile phone, she handwrites messages lyk dis lol and even abbreviates "at" with @. On paper. If she finds something funny, halfway through her laugh she tosses a few LOL LOL LOL's in there for effect.
My dad is good, he does everything I do, but not as quickly. He still thinks a 32mb video card is awesome though.
Edit: Oh, and something I've noticed a LOT of people do, not just parents or people who don't know about computers. Over half the people I know think the monitor is the actual computer, or they call the actual computer the hard drive.
Even when I pull the hard drive out and say "this is the hard drive" they still call the computer a hard drive.

Neither of them have any idea how to hook up a DVD player. They also know very little about how to use a computer other than what they've been shown and need to use it for. Makes me wonder how they manage to dress themselves in the morning.

My dad thinks that connecting to wireless internet is illegal, and both my mom, dad, gramparents think that when you go on Yahoo, MSN, AIM, Myspace that someone will automaticly come to your house and rape you!:argh:
I was talking to some people on MSN, and had iTunes and Firefox open.
My mother: How can you have more than one window open at a time???
I also had to teach her how to scroll up and down with the mouse.
My dad thinks that all keyboards are wrong because they're not in alphabetical order.

This morning I was reading the lastest Explosm Comic,My dad asks if He can check His e-mail.
So I thought to myself "It wont take to long.".
AN HOUR LATER
I walk over to my dad "Whats taking?"
My dad's response was priceless.
"I CLICKED AN AD ON ACCIDENT AND NOW I AM STUCK :censored: "
I had to explain to him "CLOSE"

At college during this past Spring semester, my parents talked to me on my little brother's AIM account. They both type wicked slow which wasn't so bad, but when they we done talking they said "going to bed now... over and out."

Thats....just awesome.
My mom has the same problem with her cellphone and text messsaging.
"HOW COME THERE ARENT NUMBERS AND JUST LETTERS!"
A day later she sold her cell phone.
For some reason, my dad can't figure out how to use Tabbed Browsing. I'll look at his computer and he'll have like nine windows up instead of just using different tabs. I've tried showing him, but he just can't get it.

Yeah, just yesterday my mum was having trouble with her new Nokia. After failing at her own attempts, she called me over to make 'that stupid thing' work. It was then I realised that mum had the slide-phones back casing facing her, and was molesting the back-case release button in an attempt to turn the phone on.
WTF!
My dad is able to do anything on a pc by himself, but he always takes a long time. My mom has to be explained anything because she is to scared to just try something. And on the video games thing, I've lectured my parents numerous times on games and they understand it pretty good by now.

Oh man. Now, I have to say, I shit you not when I tell you this. The worst incident I've experienced with my folks is walking into a room and watching, to my horror, my mother moving the mouse around the screen saying "How the feck do you work this thing?" *Facepalm*

My parents are about as tech-savvy as I. Nothing that the average person knows they don't know.
My mom started texting before I did, and she texts about ten times as much as I do.

Mine's like that as well. I tried getting him to hit the notes on time but everytime I think he gets it right, he gets it wrong again. He taps twice as much as he needs to and always fails on our Rock Band songs. Thankfully, he doesn't fail on the mic.
My mum once asked me how to turn on the Wii. Madness.

My Great-Grandmother saw my flat-panel computer panel in my bedroom and confused it with a Kitchen appliance.
My other Grandmother is also unable to grasp the concept of any crime being commited on the computer.
I have a tablet computer, and my dad just could not understand how it could be closed with the screen facing up.

This is actually musicaly retarded, but my dad was asking for new bands to download and he was like "What about that Akorn guy?" I said "...You mean Akon?"
HAH.
Also, my grandmother has a myspace. :indiff:

I've always wondered why older people listen to new music, if they don't even know the name of the band. I understand if they like it, but just downloading it to fit in with the kids is lame.

My mum called me in the middle of class on her day off, because she wanted to watch a movie and can't work the DVD player.
Luckily, teacher was out of the room so I could instruct her.
Not very.
My dad is a network administrator. It makes fixing problems easy, but getting around things very very difficult.

I literally used to have to teach my grandma how to check her e-mails every single week coz she's old and keeps forgetting how. But now that she can remember how I get 2 or 3 a day. Heh i don't know what's more annoying, constant phone calls getting me to teach her or the random forwarded emails.
So the other night I was online wasting my life when I start getting shouted at by my mother and father to come fix the television.
I walked out of my room, hit the power button.
About twenty minutes later I hear all this activity and go back out, both my parents are looking for batteries and my dad says the dvd remote isn't working. I hit the DVD button on the remote.
I also get called in frequently because they somehow switch from the TV input to video and I have to press the tv/video input button for them.
My dad has no idea how to work the dvr either, so I am in charge of all the things that he wants recorded.
We just switched today to Directv so we can get Sunday Ticket. Now I get to teach them a whole new system just when they were starting to get the old one.

Give your dad a real guitar and he would school you. Everyone's family has a master guitar shredder hiding their secret from 20 years ago.
Dad's don't need crap like guitar hero.
Ontopic: My mom is really paranoid about everything with computers. She can use them but the moment something seems a little wrong she takes it to the computer tech guy. Like if it happens to slow down after being on for 10 days.
If my dad doesn't understand it he will get it shortly. He's good like that.
Also one thing my mom does is leaves all the auxillery things on, like the printer, speakers, monitor, scanner, her plotter. It's anoying.

Well I was just about as retarded with computers until a few years ago,and my dad now thinks he knows everything! He said using wireless internet is illegal and that he can fix the computer. I've had to fix it three times now, and this last one is still recovering! But that's why I am the administrator of my computer and none of my family knows my password.

When parents say that, it usually means "Have you seen my paycheck?"
My mom has deleted IRC, Firefox, MSN Messenger, iTunes, and Vent in the last week because she "was cleaning out programs that might contain viruses"
Then she proceeded to download AVG, with the help of my dad, in order to make our computer secure.
Today, I undid all of that.

My mom's like that too. She's convinced that every time I use her computer (which I mostly use for school), I download some sort of virus onto it.
