Are the BitTorrent clients allowed to be listed? I thought discussion of torrents was against forum rules.

CharlieH

Success. I hope find that list as useful as i did when i first found it.

EDIT: Tweek, you are probably right. I'll remove them.

Just a quick question: Is there any torrent for Mac OSX?

Also, there is also Microsoft messenger (http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/messenger/default.mspx), iChat (comes standard on any OSX), Fire (http://fire.sourceforge.net/) all instant messengers for OSX.

I prefer Microsoft messenger.

Anything about torrents is a no no on here, so you would have to find that yourself. There were, but i figured it be best to take them off. Sorry.

Edit: Links Added.

Torrents are fine, just not talking about illegal ones like music and movies.

Axidos

These programs are all windows.

File conversion:
Super (http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html)
This thing converts between pretty much any multimedia file at all, along with formatting options (resolution, sound quality, etc where applicable).
But it's delicate - no guarantees you'll be able to make it work - I couldn't get it to convert something, but a friend of mine did exactly what I was trying to do just fine. Might have just been my computer.

Media Players:
Media Player Classic (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Media_Player_Classic.htm)
Fairly simplistic media player which can deal with a whole variety of formats.

VideoLAN Codec (http://www.videolan.org/) (aka VLC)
This plays just about anything, has subtitle support, a playlist, streaming and media device support, etc etc. It might not look like much at first but it's a terrific.

Networking of some sort:
Hamachi (https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/vpn.asp)
I'm not sure if this one belongs on this list.
This creates a virtual LAN connection on your computer, then you connect with other people via servers, so basically it just lets an internet connection masquerade as a LAN connection. Filesharing is optional (and disabled by default).
It's really only useful where you want to connect to someone over the 'net, but a program will only recognise LAN connections. Like in games. Which is why I'm not sure it belongs.

To get us started on torrent stuff, I use uTorrent (http://www.utorrent.com/). It's insanely low on resources which is great if you like, actually use your computer for other things.

Matterialize
04-04-2008, 10:26 AM
Azureus "Vuze" (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/) is quite the opposite of uTorrent - it eats a lot of resources, but it has a a hell of a lot of nice features.

Yet Another Bittorrent Client (ABC) (http://pingpong-abc.sourceforge.net/) is another one, but like uTorrent, it's very easy on your system. A simple and easy to use bittorrent program.

RocketDock (http://rocketdock.com/) is basically the same thing as Object Dock. Just another alternative, if for some reason one of them doesn't work, download and use the other.

EDIT: All for Windows. Not sure if versions of these exist for other operating systems.

If you're a Mozilla fan:

MozBackup (http://www.mozbackup.org/):
One stop shop for backing up your Mozilla and Thunderbird settings, emails, bookmarks, etc. Creates a snapshot of everything web/email related if you ever get a new computer or reformat. I love it to death.

For downloading podcasts, I use:
Juice (http://juicereceiver.sourceforge.net/)
it works great in conjunction with what I use to stream video to my PS3:

Tversity (http://tversity.com/home)
I use it to stream to my ps3 but it could just as easily stream to a 360 or another computer. It basically just turns your pc into a media server.

For ripping DVD's onto my computer I use:
Auto Gordian Knot (AutoGK) (http://www.autogk.me.uk/)
It works great, it takes a DVD and shrinks it down to a .avi file of the size you specify.

Ok this is kind of a silly one, but I have found it so freaking useful I thought I would include it:
Alarm (http://bluefive.pair.com/updates.htm)
Yeah so, it lets you use your computer like an alarm clock and allows you to use your own mp3's as the alarm. Nothing complex just really useful.

As far as free developing tools, I use:
Python IDLE (http://www.python.org/download/)
Great light weight little IDE for python, allows you to run individual bits of code without needing a main.

For C/C++ I like:
Dev-C++ (http://www.bloodshed.net/download.html)
There is also a Dev-Pascal on that site, though I have never used it.

For Java:
JCreator LE (http://www.jcreator.com/download.htm)
It's lightweight doesn't take long to boot and is free.

Other than that, I use alot of the software already mentioned, uTorrent, WinRar, VLC, FireFox Etc.

I'm not putting Hamachi on that list. Purely because i don't like it. You can't bloody well get rid of it when you don't want it anymore.

Cheers for the links here people. Eventually, i'll give it back to the CtrlAltDel Forums with our improvements :).

That's a shitty reason to not add it. :indiff: I know at least 3 people who use it regularly, I personally don't because I use www.logmein.com but nonetheless I know it is a good piece of software.

Good rule of thumb: if you don't know what it is and what it does, don't use it.

Also, update the damn list.

Pretty sure he meant "is there a torrent program for OS X?"
Re that, I don't own a Mac, so I'm not sure if it's any good, but Transmission (http://www.transmissionbt.com/) seems to be pretty popular.

All-in-one setup (for beginner users - very simple, very easy) XAMPP (http://apachefriends.org)

All of these links have the proper downloads for each OS.

You should not be dictating what does and does not go onto the list Charlie, Hamachi is an awesome app, it allows you to lan over the internet. I have had no problems with it, and just because you have does not mean it should not be added.

Just a quick question: Is there any torrent for Mac OSX?

Do you mean a torrent program or an actual torrent for the OSX?

I use a program I use, I can't remember what it is called... Not as awesome as utorrent, but still pretty nifty.

Edit: Its called Transmission (http://www.transmissionbt.com). I highly reccomend it.

Shouldn't you just stick them into one list, and put the platform(s) in brackets? It saves having to put the same item down 3 times; and why isn't Blender under the Linux list, too?

RenameMaster (http://www.joejoesoft.com/cms/showpage.php?cid=108) - File management. Prefixes, suffixes, lists... Everything you could want for renaming multiple files at once.

Powerdesk (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,3491-order,1-page,1-c,alldownloads/description.html) - File management. Windows Explorer alternative with a lot of very useful tools. Demo, but it's an unlimited trial.

RivaTuner (http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=rivatuner) - Video card tweaking. NVIDIA's equivalent to ATITool. Overclocking, setting refresh rates, fan speeds... Ability to tweak everything video card related.

A lot of useful stuff on the list so far. Gonna save the favorite in my backup folder. These should probably go up there as well, tried to follow your format.

Like windows blinds, though it also changes the boot up screen, windows, sound effects, etc. I'm using the mac skin, and it works really well and doesn't eat too many resources. And it's actually entirely free, you don't have to pay anything. (unlike windows blinds and object dock which cost $20 for the full versions.)

How about AutoHotkey?
http://autohotkey.com/

Basically, it lets you remap keys to any other key very easily
'a::b' will send b when you press a
More advanced stuff, you can create hotstrings
'::fyi:: for your information' will exchange fyi for whatever you place after it
Even more advanced stuff includes: scripting, GUI creation, file management, memory management, message sending/receiving between windows.

For Windows only, sadly.

I've written several useful scripts, some being a mouse macro recorder / player, a web scraper and a small text editor (adding a calculator into that soon)
Going to attempt a simple image editor as well, or just steal Paints GUI...
