View Full Version : What do you guys think about OLED?
OLED has been getting closer an closer to a reality for a while now, and I wonder what you guys think if this will be the next big thing, the step before we start getting wall sized displays and folding screens for mobile gadgets.
I am extremely excited at the prospect a great rich color with no back lighting. Here is a video of a 27'' OLED in action at CES in January what do you guys think?
It is the width of three credit cards stacked, and I have heard that they can make them even thinner now.

The O is for 'organic', right?
That's really damn cool. It's a shame I'll never be able to afford one. Next step is the interactive OLED sheets of paper from Firefly.

Yeah, Organic Light Emitting Diode. Well see that's the thing, I remember when LCD was $4000 for a 20 inch, I really don't think it is ridiculous to see this in your house in 5 years.
They don't seem like a generational leap from LCDs, just a slight improvement. I think they're gonna remain a niche thing like Blu-Ray.

Well, they are ultra-thin though, with no backlight. They are going to change the face of mobile computing, at least 75% of your laptops battery life is used up by the screen. We are probably talking 8 hours of battery life using existing battery technology.
Yeah, I just read up on the ridiculously low power usage these things have. I changed my mind, they'll be fantastic for portable electronics.

It reminds me of that concept phone, the Nokia Morph. Computers themselves are already tiny and continue to shrink all the time. With a screen like this, we could eventually end up carrying our PCs around in our wallets.

Yeah, I saw a concept for a cellphone that had a 7inch fold up display, but this stuff has the potential to be flexible as well, so I will not be surprised if started showing up in places you wouldn't expect, like windows or or in motorcycle helmets as like a HUD.

Here's a video of a foldable one. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcAm3KihFho)
I remember reading somewhere that OLED and SED (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface-conduction_electron-emitter_display) are going to be the two competitors of the next generation of displays. From what I've heard about SED, it's kind of like each pixel is it's own CRT display, and the blacks on it are as black as black gets.

Wow, the OLED foldable thing is amazing. Just think what you could do with that, you could have an entire wall covered in it, and it's take up no room at all.
I hope they bring oput pogs and tazos again. But this time with video.

If you think that (folding OLED) is amazing, look up the Nokia Morph concept in google and watch the vid. On OLED tvs: I think the concept is there, but it will be a while before it is low enough in price to be worth it. It's just an expensive gimmick at the moment.

OLEDs are very sexy indeed. I can see them being a challenger to LCD and plasma screens. Imagine Windows on your windows...
There will still be CRTs in 10 years time*, though probably only for oscilloscopes.
* - If we still have a planet, that is.

Pricey, but very very useful and saves a hell of alot of power usage.
These will be must-haves with laptops soon. (soon being more like 5 years when someone would even consider buying one, price would be awesomely high...)
The foldable ones are what really get me excited.
Finally the age of interactive paper is about to become a reality. Took it long enough!

They're getting thinner and thinner!
Sony presented a 0.2mm display at the Display 2008 convention. Human hair is only 0.05mm.

The applications for this technology will be immense. imagine being able to roll up your computer screen, like a projector-blind, For students this would save so much time!
LittleTeapot: I'm pretty sure we'll still have an earth in 10 years time, the only thing that would get rid of it that quickly would be some kind of meteorite. Global warming will take more than 10 years to kill off an entire species.

I love humanity. We fucking rock.
I look forward to seeing this in stores and then buying one when prices have been slashed.
5 years to get into stores, and another 2 or 3 for the prices to be lowered sufficiently.

Holy crap that is unbelievable. I can't wait to see the device we have in 10 years.

From what I understand there are already projects to use this type of technology for military optic camouflage. The principle is using small camera to project what is behind you onto screen. There are crude examples you can find by searching for optic camouflage.

I showed my dad that, who grew up on a farm in the 50s and 60s. He nearly crapped his pants. I don't think he's used to the fact that he can take a phone with him when he leaves the house, let alone that he might soon be able to take a fucking television.

I never even thought of that. Technology such as this would be the ultimate in cloaking. Cover a man in flexible, and probable eventually breathable, material like the folding OLED and you'd be able to project his surroundings straight into his clothing, literally hiding him from view. It might need a few dozen tiny cameras to pick up the scenery, but tiny cameras are easy shit compared to this.

OLED is pretty amazing stuff. My friend and I were theorizing about paint with OLEDs embedded in them so you could paint a wall and then decide what color you wanted it. You could probably make a pretty kick ass active camouflage out of it too.

God I laughed hard.
And I'd like to have one of those on my mp3 or laptop, the powersave would be enormous.

I like the notion of paint, though it would be more like wallpaper.
Imagine walking into a room, and deciding that you'd like to be on safari. Program the computer and suddenly you're surrounded by a High Definition rendition of the Savannah.
Imagine sitting in the middle of all the historic battles, or having the ship come in above you at the beginning of Star Wars. It would beat the heck out of IMAX!
