Review:
My roomie is a huge DMB fan, whereas I listen to them but it wouldn't be my frist choice in music. She dragged me along to the concert last night with promises of free beer. I agreed to go because Alpine Valley is a fun ass venue. (http://www.livenation.com/venue/getVenue/venueId/29). I am not that great at describing things, so I am going to copy and paste off of their site:
"AVMT is one of the premier outdoor amphitheatres in the country with a unique wood roof covering the reserved seating and holding near 36,000 concert fans. Being located in a natural valley, the venue has outstanding acoustics paired with some incredible scenery. Don't forget about the parking lots and the tailgating which can be just as entertaining as the show itself!"

Anyway, the show started at 7pm, and we arrived in the parking lot to tailgate around 4pm. We pulled up and parked, and got out of the car and the party started. Tailgating here is great fun, almost more fun then at a baseball or football game, because the atmosphere is a little more laid back. Everyone walks around with beer and meets random people. And there is minimal drunken drama. I find that there is a different energy at sporting events. Anyway...

At around 5:30pm, we are in the parking lot, talking with a random group of people from Iowa who pulled us out of the crowd to do beer bongs with them, when we see a group of people on bicycles. We watch them ride towards us, as you don't frequently see people on bikes there... and lo and behold, it was Dave Matthews himself. He commented something along the lines of "nice bong man" and "hope everyone's having a great time" and chats for a minute until a big group of people starts crowding around him and he has to go before there's trouble. I thought that was really cool of him to be checking out the parking lot parties before hand. And it was super cool that he actually stopped to talk.

We stayed in the parking lot too long so we missed the roots, but I heard they were awesome.

We walked in around 7:45/8ish and got beer and got our places, and Dave came on right away.

The concert was AMAZING. The atmosphere was awesome, as the crowd was not rowdy or obnoxious, and everyone that was there was really into the music.

Dave himself puts on a great show. He has a great stage presence, and the concert is better because he smiles the whole time, and you can tell that he loves what he does.

He played really good songs, and by the last song, the entire audience was jamming along with him. Beachballs were flying around the audience. It was an awesome concert.

I would most definitely go see him again soon.

The only downfall of the entire night was that it had been raining here for a week straight last week, so the fields were a little bit smelly and in rough shape. Also, in my opinion, the only downfall of Alpine Valley is that leaving the parking lot takes a good hour, which can be rather annoying.

To wrap it all up, I am copy pasting the following off DMB's website (www.davematthewsband.com):

"In the words of Carter Beauford, "This weekend was OFF THE HOOK!" We say it every time, Alpine Valley is one of our favorite places to play. There's an unparalleled vibe fed to us by the audience at this place. We were all extremely excited to have The Roots opening up the shows here. The Roots' guitarist, Kirk Douglas, played an awesome solo on Jimi Thing tonight. Kirk and the entire Roots' horn section joined us for Eh Hee, with MC Black Thought laying down some brilliant freestyle rap. The horn section continued to play on and off throughout the main set, laying it all out for Too Much. We're on our way to Kansas for a show on Tuesday. See y'all there."

Sounds like an awesome time. I actually dug Dave Matthews Band back when they were huge in late 90's to early 2000's. You just don't hear a lot about the band nowadays as its just Dave going solo. By the way, is that black violinist still in the band?
