How many of you 'splosmers know another language aside from English? How many have English as a secondary language? I've always wanted to ask this since last year 'cause I first learned Spanish. I really liked it, but, my life story aside, I've always just been curious.

English is my first. I'm also fluent in Afrikaans, a variation of Dutch and German, mixed with local South African dialect. I can thus loosely understand some German and Dutch. But not much.

Estonian is my first. I speak English pretty fluent i guess. Been studying it for like 9 years. I SHOULD know some Russian after 3 years of study, but the teacher sucked and I rely on Ja ne panimaješ parusski. I understand a little Finnish, because its similar to our language. And maybe a few words of German and Spanish.

Icelandic is my first and English my second.

I write and speak Danish, I understand most of written Norwegian because its similar to the other scandinavian languages I've learned, and I understand all Faraoe Island'ish (I have no idea what the language is called in English), because its like a bad mix of pure Icelandic and Danish, I can put everything they write and speak into context, but I cant write nor speak it myself because I dont know at which point they either use Icelandic or Danish when speaking/writing.

Im also learning German, but Im not so good at it.

I've been taking Spanish for 3 years now, and I can say I know only the simplist sayings. My school doesn't teach Spanish for shit, and I really hate learning it, so it evens out.

I know that learning a language is essential for living in today's multicultural society, but it still doesn't excuse the fact that learning it is very boring.

I managed a C in German, so I guess that means I can have a light conversation about what I like to eat >.<
I have to take an extra curriculum course in college, so I might take Japanese. Although, I dunno if being able to say a handfull of words from anime classifies, ranging from pirate to alchemist, as a reason to learn a launguage.

English, been taking french for 4 years at school (predicted A* for my GCSE), been taking italian for 2 years at school (also predicted an A*) and picked up a little spanish from my holidays there.

Born and raised to speak English. 10 years of French and I still wouldn't feel confident if I were stranded alone in France. I took Latin for a year and a half then dropped it. Too bad they only teach you book smarts in school. I'm interested in learning several languages like Spanish and Italian and being able to speak them well, but high school isn't the best place for that, unfortunately. I'm pretty good with languages and my French allows me to take stabs at Spanish. I can phonetically read the Russian and Hebrew alphabets, and I can understand a few Hebrew words here and there but I never really had a solid Jewish education.

Wow, listing that you learned Latin in a languages thread is kind of weird. Personally, I've taken Greek and Latin for 5 years now and I didn't even think of mentioning this here, after all, you're not learning how to speak the language, just to read, analyze and translate it.

My French isn't bad. I can read, speak and understand it pretty fluently, but when it comes to writing it isn't so hot. I have serious trouble with my verbs. Sad, because I took 2 years of core French, 3 years of immersion (French, math, science, social studies and health in French) then one more year of high school French (health, French, history, science) and I still have trouble conjugating verbs.

Not that you speak English all that well, either.
I speak English, Spanish, Italian, and a tiny bit of Latin.
I also can use ASL, which I usually use for fun to piss off my friends because they don't know what I'm saying.

High School Credit wise, they count ASL as a foreign language, so I counted it here.

And I have to:
Nope, just English for me. Don't blame me for my "ignorance"; I just don't give a fuck about learning [other] languages because wherever I go someone speaks English. Just my opinion on the subject matter.

Oh, so much better. I'm so O.C.D., dammit. Haha.

I know two languages. First one being Swedish, second being English.

Learning new languages doesn't have to be boring. Heck, i didn't learn English in school, Playstation thought me.

If i got to choose another language to learn it would probably be either Japanese or how to speak Braille.

Yes, english IS the universal language for a reason. That being that it is by far the simplest language, so its easy to learn. But learning new languages makes you feel smarter, just try learning an easy one.

Spanish is my first language, and then I learned English. I know small phrases in German and Portuguese (Rammstein/Soulfly) but I'd love to learn them both fluently. I would take a class in Japanese if it wouldn't be full of those fucking anime kids.

I know Mandarin Chinese. However you have to watch out because a lot of the stuff you learn as one word, often has been turned into slang. My friend and I were on a plane flying in China, and my friend calls out "Xiao Jie! Xiao Jie!" thinking it meant "Miss, Miss!" as he was trying to get the attention of an air hostess. We got really dirty looks from this group of old people. The lady sitting behind us snickered and whispered over to us that Xiao Jie is slang for prostitute now.

English is my native language. I took 4 years of German in high school. I can still remember a lot of stuff cause I use it every now and then (my best friend is a German major). I can write it better than I speak it and I speak it better than I understand it while listening. If people talk slowly in it, I do fine. Try Latin by correspondence. I studied Latin for half of grade 8 and all of grade 9. The course was very straightforward, we just went through the Cambridge textbooks chapter by chapter and my teacher gave us a bit of grammar enrichment and translations from the text and other stuff like projects about Roman culture. My teacher learned by correspondence and teaches a few students by correspondence, so I'd say it's a viable option and definitely worth looking into, especially now with the ease of the internet.

I don't know what level of Latin you're interested in or how much you know, if any, but here's the wiki page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cambridge_Latin_Course) for what I did, with links to the official site.

I've just started Italian, but i understand a Portuguese, French and German when reading. I'm willing to learn other lenguages including Latin, but that will have to wait until i'm off to college, as i live in a very small town and don't have much learning options.

English as my first but I can speak French fairly fluently because I've taken French Immersion in school since kindergarten. Plus I've been to France and I guess talking to the locals helps a bit. I wanted to learn some Gaelic just because I have Irish and Scottish roots and because it sounds sweet! :D

I'm fluent in Arabic and English, and I'm on my 3rd year of learning Spanish. Like "lollercaust" said: "While I wouldn't expect to have a normal conversation with a native speaker, I feel I could hold my own in a Spanish country as the majority of my education in it has been learning how to be able to do that."

Norwegian is my first, and I consider myself fluent in English.
My German is pretty good, although it could be much better.
Being Norwegian, I automatically understand Swedish and Danish (even though the latter sounds like a bird who's getting strangled while eating food that is too hot and wrestling a kangaroo with explosive diarrhea). I know a few French and Spanish word, too, but I can't like have a conversation in any of them.

I speak just English, despite the push to get kids to take buttloads of language classes/be bilingual (at least where I am). However, due to my proximity to Canada (more specifically French speaking Canada), I can understand a lot and say enough to get by in French.

In the commencement address at my university this past weekend, they started by welcoming everyone in English and French. And job postings for another school in the UMaine System (which I happened to see one day)? The letter head/stationary shit for that university says everything in English and French. Oh, we also have some highway signs in English and French.

I am teaching myself Japanese, I can now read it, and I am slowly beginning to learn what those words mean. Learning the symbols and how to read is quite easy and only took me about a week, because their sounds don't change depending on the circumstance (ie- in english vowels sounding different if placed together, or 'ph'). Except for 'wa' which is also pronounced as 'ha'.

I imagine English would be a difficult language to learn if you aren't European.
